Brooklyn Kayaking Adventure: Exploring Dead Horse Bay and the Natural Beauty of NYC
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 тра 2024
- Join me on a kayaking adventure through unique locations in Brooklyn, New York. I start my paddle at Floyd Bennett Field, explore Jamaica Bay and Dead Horse Bay. I also make stops at Glass Bottle Beach and Marine Park. Glass Bottle Beach and Dead Horse Bay are technically closed to the public for radiation surveys, but just had to stop to show you how interesting the area is. The adventure continues at Coney Island's Luna Park to ride the historic Cyclone rollercoaster and visit the original Nathan's Famous Hot Dog stand. There is so much natural beauty that you may not expect to find in Brooklyn!

One of the best new channels on UA-cam.
Honored! Thank you for the compliment.
I agree... I must boast, if i subscribe, they reach 100k sooner than later. Been doing that since 2008. LOL. Great channel!
@bgd73 I hope you subscribe and I reach 100k!! I really appreciate the compliment. I'm excited to grow this channel. Let me know if there's any spot you want me to explore.
this channel will do great
I agree. Loving his adventures. I’m from BK. I’ve always wanted to go kayaking there. They have a launch and rentals at Canarsie pier now.
I’ve lived in Brooklyn for over 65 years and I’m learning about the many creeks and waterways You’ve brought us through your adventures The Ride on the Cyclone was AWSOME. . Man thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching.
New York, Kayaking, Cyclone & Nathans Hot Dogs. You lived a great day.
For sure! Thank you for watching!
Loved this video as I’ve said before I was born in Brooklyn 80 years ago. You’ve awakened my youth. 👍👍😊❤️
Wow, that is so awesome! I really appreciate viewers / subscribers like you. Your compliment means a lot to me. Thank you sir!
I grew up in bed-stuy (I’m still here lol,) most of brooklyn doesn’t know this, the incredible natural landscapes are available to them… I appreciate your channel. 🙏
Thank you for watching. I appreciate it.
Glad this channel popped up on my feed. I'm a native NYer and it's nice to see home from a different perspective. Growing up, we pretty much stayed away from the bays and rivers due to certain activity that wasnt safe at the time (80's - 90's). We did often head to the beaches though and Coney Island was the summer classic. Now that I've taken up kayaking and seeing how much NY has evolved, it makes me want to come home (to visit only though 😂) and see it through a different lens. Great video and thanks for sharing.
Thank you for a great video. Born in Brooklyn (Sheepshead Bay) now living in Lake George, NY. I know all these waterways when I was a kid. Also, the Bronx River video was also a great one. Thanks again and be safe.
Thank you so much!!!
What a great channel. I am a native NYer and would never think to travel where you have. The Bronx River amazing!! Kudos to you and thank you for such a great look at NYC waterways that are taken for granted.
Thank you so much!!!
I can believe someone would put those scooters in the river. Good job cleaning up. 😎video
Magnificent Osprey's.
I paddle on Jamaica Bay every weekend. Nice to see a different perspective. The Osprey you got on camera in Garretson was awesome. You should try putting in at Manhattan Beach and paddle across to Breezy Point There's a sandbar offshore that makes for some exciting moments and fun times.
Gerritsen lol
I live in Colorado now but in the sixties , lived on Burnett Street by Marine Park. The water waste was across the street and it was not somewhere we high schoolers were stupid enough to venture near.
Great videos man! I'm a kayaker and canoeist myself. Very interesting paddles. That bird was a loon.
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Marine Park place where i grew up many many years ago. Thx for the view i never knew
Great editing and camera work. Thanks for your efforts - great channel!
Thank you!! Really appreciate the compliments.
@ 36 seconds. That was a party spot back in the day . Total Outlaw Raves from the late 90s to early 00's at Floyd Bennet Field!
another awesome paddle great video thanks for sharing
I've kayaked not too far from there, launching off the Canarsie pier. I'll be taking my new SUP out there in just a few days!
Definitely gives a different perspective of the city. People are living on a treasure and only take advantage of a portion of it
Facts Jamaica Bay is insanely cool I have a boat there and nature is just thriving there.
Wow, nice day on the water in NYC! then Coney Island!
Best day ever! I had fun!
YES. The Cyclone was amazing. Hot Dogs too. 🌭
I have to agree, a refreshing look at the outdoors ! Well produced and narrated. The combination of urban decay with the great outdoors is fascinating to watch! What's amazing is that there Is not a soul around! My son had to spend three years in Brooklyn, and I as back and forth at least three times a year. Had I known about these areas I would have rented a kayak and gone out for sure!
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
The horse rendering plants were during the 19th century. They were gone early in the 20th century. In the 20th century. The area was turned into a landfill. The landfill wall was destroyed by storms.
Yes, you're right!
Thank you for sharing your adventure. Now I'm actually thinking of getting a kayak and exploring these beautiful areas
Not a car part, but it is something you could get some cash for. It's a kick pedal for the bass drum of a drum set.
Wow, what a great day on the water capped by a perfect cyclone ride. That's living.
very motivating to get a kayak and go out around nyc. so much to explore in such a big city!
Flold Bennett field my favorite place in brooklyn go there every weekend love the nature there fish also
It's such a huge area with something for everyone it seems. Lots of people fish there. Especially near where I launched.
Hey I recognize the area , that’s by Floyd Bennet Field , used to go there when I lived in Brooklyn. 😊 Nice to see it from this perspective.
Its good you are drawing attention to the forgotten river trails in the City. I did a video of of the Platte R. in Denver and am planning on more. These under-loved places really need more public use and awareness lest they deteriorate any more. And the Dam E-scooters! We have a similar problem in Colorado.
love ur vids man no clickbait bullshit, calm vids, calm music, funny moments. Yeah I'm a fan now bro fr this shit is relaxing to put on in the background while i work, and yes I loved your bronx river vid as well
Heck yeah! Love this. Thank you.
Wooow…this channel has made me appreciate nyc more as a daily commuter from nj
Thank you! Welcome!
Those glass bottles are a vintage find
I am really enjoying your channel. keep it up...
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
17:01 That amber Clorox bottle sells for $25 on eBay, same condition, no cap or label. I bet one full day on that beach could generate at least a thousand dollars in bottle sales.
Yes, you're right!
Wow very nice, and interesting video, I live in Bay Ridge Brooklyn seems that I am not too far away from bottle beach.
Looking forward to a Peconic River paddle video.
My videos, Kayaking in a Winter Wonderland and Solo Camping are both on the Peconic River. Check both of them out. The winter one, I launch at Forge Pond in the snow. The other, I camp at the Peconic River Campground and paddle from there. Really cool!!
You had some rough areas. I’m glad you weren’t mugged. Ty for sharing your adventures on the river.
This ain't the 80's bro
Brilliant video, really enjoyable! Thank you for the intro to all the different places you go paddling, and also to the Oru foldable kayaks. What an amazing design!
Greetings from across the puddle (UK).
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
Love the vids (24:22 me and my buddies fishing spot is on the left)
Thats very cool! I watched the Bronx River trip, and this one. I happened to be driving on the Belt Pky today past where you were, brought it all into prospective. Cool channel, thanks for filming
Thank you for watching! It really is cool bringing it all into perspective.
Shirley Chisholm State park In Brooklyn is a very nice place to kayak as well😋
I really want to check it out. Thank you.
I took the plunge and got the Oru Kayak XT package. Should be here in a week or so. I will using Bridgeport lake in Bridgeport Texas. I of course got life vest. Will get dry suit later at Cabelas. I lived in the Bronx in 60s 70s & end of 80’s before finishing Lehman College and going to Alaska were I meet the wife. We have been in Texas since early 90s. Both RNs. My daughter also interested in Kayaking. Going to get her one too! You have inspired me with your UA-cam channel!
Wow, this is so amazing!!!
Thanks for the tour; a fascinating peek back in time
Jamaica Bay & Floyd Bennett Field are in Queens, but either way this is a fun channel. I am glad I found it.
Floyd Bennett Field is actually in Brooklyn though and Jamaica Bay is part in Brooklyn, part in Queens.
Floyd Bennett Field is off Flatbush Av between the Belt Parkway and the Marine Park. Bridge definitely in Brooklyn
and thank you for the extra bonus of a ride on the Cyclone! front row seat!
Yes, that was a blast wasn't it! Thank you for watching.
I grew up in gerritson beach. Lived on the water there my whole life. Where the car chasis is is actually gerritson beach Years ago if your car was stolen good chance it was back there we called it the back weeds Mao mao island used to be a garbage dump. Where you launched your kayak is where they filmed We Own The Night with Glad i found your channel. Great footage.look out for Coney Island white fish there all over there. 😆
I'm thinking of going out to Coney Island Creek to explore and check out the yellow submarine.
Another thing, you think I can Stealth Camp on Mao Mao Island?
@@TwoFeetOutdoors absolutely. No one will bother you there. I live in seaford Long Island. If you ever wanna come out. Theres the marshes at hi tide you can paddle through. Also a sweet tunnel thats the size of s football field going to cedar park. Pretyy cool canals. I have 3 kayaks live rgt on water. Your welcome to come by.
@24.48 Another rave spot !!
Read the comments: Suggest maps of start/stop points and route taken. Local lore and history narration added. Glass Bottle beach is closed but before that, artists would collect the old glass and use it in their art projects. Stuff like that.
Thank you for the suggestions. I'm working hard and listening the the audience. Thank for watching.
This was really entertaining! I've driven on the Belt countless times and often wondered about paddling around there - Definitely putting it on my list! I just found your channel, so I haven't seen any other of your videos, but if you haven't paddled in the Pine Barrens, (Wharton State Forest in NJ) put it on your lsit! I'm assuming your local to the NY/NJ area.
It was really nice paddling out there! Thank you for watching! I appreciate the comment too. I will check out the Pine barrens for sure. Is there a lake or river there? Any camping opportunities there? Def check out my Bronx River video. It's really cool! My other videos are from camping / kayaking on Long Island.
@TwoFeetOutdoors Your other videos are on deck for today! The Bronx River has my attention as well!
Wharton State Forest has six or seven campgrounds, three are hike-in, the others are drive-in and many of those sites can accommodate a trailer (no connections). There are MILES 4WD trails to enjoy as well.
The Mullica River and Wading river are really fun! A local outfitter has canoe/kayak rentals, so they make sure the river is navigable (the rivers are narrow and it doesn't take much to block them).
Check AllTrails - I'm pretty sure the boat launch locations are marked. I grew up in Nassau County and moved to NJ 25+ years ago. I am an avid hiker/camper/kayaker and I ignored the Pine Barrens for YEARS, thinking, meh... it's flat, just a bunch of pine trees... I could not have been more wrong. 100% recommended for kayaking! And hiking! And camping!
That Oru you have is pretty wild! Your Uber drivers gotta be a little confused when they pick you up! Uber isn't as readily available in the pine barrens as it is on LI.
@@sundaymorninghikes6275 I was researching the Pine Barrens last night. Thank you!
Hay dude next time your around hit me up that’s my playground at the Marine park bridge. On the right before the bridge is a kayak launch site. I launch there all the time. As a matter of fact I was there just last week in my Lake ORU kayak testing it out. 🤣
I just subscribed you’re my kind of explorer. You’ve been to all the places I seek out regularly when I need me time. You can also launch at Canarsie pier and Shirley Chisholm park.
Thank you. Yes, I want to go to both places you mentioned. Thanks for subbing.
1850s is when they had all the horse and fish oil processing
Thank you! I'm more of an explorer than a historian. 😀 Thank you for watching and commenting.
Awesome adventure! I’m so glad you ended your day on the Cyclone..and hot dogs! Well-deserved! 😁😎
Thank you! I thought that would be a fun twist! The Cyclone was amazing.
Loving this channel 👍
Love those words! Thank you!
I dare you to try out Newtown creek. Lol
I'm thinking of doing the Gowanus Canal
Hello and good morning from the Bronx I really enjoyed your video's..thank you for sharing your adventures in nyc. ❤
Thank you for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it Rosemary.
That’s crazy
Great video.. calm waters
Picked a really nice day for it!!
What a beautiful day! Thanks for the tour.
So Incredible! Thank you for watching!
The diving bird at 9:00 is a Double crested cormorant.
Thank you!!
Nicely done.
Thank you. Thanks for watching!
Love Watching Your Channel, Im A NYC Kayak Angler i basically Swept Many Launching Spot And amore To Adventuring im Reside In NJ But I love The Long Island Sounds South and North
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and commenting!!
@rncmasterplumber where is your favorite spots to kayak?
I know all these spots, I grew up in Brooklyn and Staten Island. Now I live in the Rockaways. Most New yorkers don't care to visit these places.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Hey bud I have a great vid idea. First go to the alpine look out NJ get some shots from they top then go kayaking
That sounds excellent. I'm definitely going to start taking on some adventures recommended by my subscribers.
Horrible to see all that glass on that beach. Imagine if NYC decided to do a deep clean. Imagine how wonderful it would be. maybe collect all the glass bottle and make a cool art out of it. Glass bottle beach should be another beach for folks to beach it out.
I agree 100%. Thank you for watching.
Marine park is more like marine marsh lol, I’ve been knee deep in mud unprepared for it with my eBike… would have much rather explored in a kayak like you!
Yes, Marine Park is very pretty via kayak. I really enjoyed it.
Cool adventure
Thank you for watching!!
Resident of Rockaway i would never ever even dip a toe in Jamaica bay. Kudo's my brother in Christ.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
It's surprising you have Ospreys in a city that big.
I know, it's incredible! We seem to have a very healthy Osprey population. Even more further out east on Long Island. Thank you for watching!
Hello - when you did the Bronx River, where did you launch from? Was it Shoelace Park?
Yes, Shoelace Park.
I really enjoy this channel. Do you have a link to your kayak ? It is awesome. Really considering trying it out.
Check out orukayak.com, mine is the Oru Kayak Bay ST model. I also have the Inlet. They have a variety of models and types with comparisons.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors Thank you , look forward to more videos.
That water tower in Floydd Bennett’s field isn’t a water tower it’s the weather Doppler radar for all of the area
That's what I said as I got closer to it that I thought it was a radar tower.
There A River Called Hackensack River If You Google Map It You Will See How This River Starts In Bayonne NJ & Staten Island, This River Has A Small Connectio. With Oradell Reservoir Emerson NJ, I Launched zfrom Laurel Hill Oark In Secaucus NJ and Upstream, I Never Went South. This River Has Inlets From Different Creeks or Small River In Different Places. i Would Love To See You There Filming
I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the info.
Hey, love the videos. What kind of kayak do you use?
It’s an Oru Kayak Bay ST
Which 360 camera are you using, seems like you have great battery with it too.
Insta360 X3. I used 2 full batteries and a partial 3rd for this trip. Thank you for watching!
Not the solitude I want
Thank you for watching. I have lots of other videos. I invite you yo take a look. Thanks.
what kind of kayak is that a Trak??
Oru Kayak, Bay ST (Black Edition)
@@TwoFeetOutdoors oh gotcha.
Beware of sharks
I stayed above the water and the sharks stayed below. So, we're all good.
yikes. Did they ever reopen Glass Bottle Beach? I recall it being closed and off limits because of dangerous levels of radiation was found there a couple of years ago.
It's still technically closed. People visit there daily.
Excelent vid! What's the Brand of your kayak?
It's an Oru Kayak Bay ST
So Why don't they clean that area up ? seems like they would have a group of outdoor people volunteer to tidy it up ...Just doesn't make any sense ...?
Me and you, let's go!
What kind of Kayaki is that you are utilizing, and where can I find one?
Oru Kayak Bay ST
Noob question: Can you legally kayak in any body of water? can i find any launch point and go out without problem? does time of day matter as well?
There are two launches at Floyd Bennett Field. Marine Park has one too.
nice video - do you have a video about your kayak or a link to that model kayak? thank you so much.
www.orukayak.com/products/bay-st
Hipster transplant say what? The back cars the scariest everybody knows the rules
Front car is excellent for video. Lol. I enjoyed it. I didn't want to put other people in my video either so the front worked out great. Thank you for watching and commenting.
What brand of kayak do you use?
Oru Kayak Bay ST
they have a trail for dirt bikes there min 30
you ever put out riggers on your Kayak...to protect your self ?
No, never.
It would be nice by you showing all the trash and garbage all over our great coast line maybe people will stop or even pick up garbage they see. We only have one Earth, and we are not taking very good care of it. How long do you think the Earth can hold on??
I’m so naive. I thought he was going to paddle to Coney island.
Hahaha. I decided to end the kayaking portion at the launch at Marine Park, got the Uber back to my truck at Floyd Bennett Field and drove to Coney Island. I REALLY want to ride the Cyclone for the 1st time ever. 🤣😂
It isn't naivety. It is just local knowledge. Traveling west from Marine Park, Coney Island is no longer in the lee of the Rockaway barrier island so there is more wave action as it is open to the Atlantic Ocean. Most days it would be okay in a small rowboat (if not a bit distant).
Hey, two feet! Ya gonna keep the Cyclone ticket price a secret? Near as I can determine, 10 credits = $10 but you can buy a package for $50. When asking "How much?" and no answer is forth coming it can be guessed it ain't cheap. Best of my recollection, it was $3.75 last time I rode it.
All that shore line in "Marine Park" is altered. Where you see stones, they were brought in by landscapers The original sea grasses grew very tall. Taller than a man. You could walk a few feet in and disappear from sight. It seems most of the original natural grasses were eradicated.
@bob1505 yes, it was $10 to ride the Cyclone. I really appreciate your lengthy comment and detail. Thank you for watching!
You need a better camera!!! I do enjoy youre videos
I'd love to hear what you think can be improved camera wise. Let me know your thoughts. I started as a small channel with a camera and a mic. That's all. I hope to expand as this all develops.
Clean up the bottles
It's a land fill at Glass Bottle Beach so the bottles, glass and debris are constantly spilling out onto the beach. I wish they would put a retaining wall around it so it doesn't all end up in the bay.
There are hundreds of thousands broken bottles along with countless other non-biodegradable items at Dead Horse Bay. It was a landfill for the city of New York for decades. It would cost hundreds of millions of dollars to try and clean it up.
Hi there. didn't finish the video but please keep reading.
That intro, showing "garbage" was not convincing.
Glass is not pollution; it comes from silicate (sand) and not petrol.
The weird thing here is you considering pollution and throwing it back to the water and getting upset with it, throwing farther and angrier...
Hello, hope you'll come back and give it a watch. That beach is the site of a landfill so it's basically impossible to clean up without walling it off from the bay. Deadhorse Bay and glass bottle beach is well known. I love nature and clean up trash all the time. In the video, I show more of the beach. I've visited there a couple of times previously to collect unique bottles. While I wish there wasn't a landfill there spilling into the bay, it doesn't upset me or make me angry. Just documenting it during a beautiful kayaking adventure in Brooklyn. It's part of NYC history. Hope you'll come back and give it a watch.
There is only you.
???
Subbed
Thank you!!! 😊
