1994 US HPM Humanitarian Pouched Meal Review Turkey Patty MRE Meal Ready to Eat Tasting Test
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- Before the HDR (Humanitarian Daily Ration), the US was using this single meal variant for humanitarian relief in scenarios where dining facilities and water were potentially in short supply. This well stored ration not only stood the test of time, but also featured some reasonably palatable components such as salted vegetable crackers that resembled some sort of shelf stable flatbread, dry & velvety sweet raisins, and a zesty lime beverage base.

Fun fact; Steve is actually 89 years old... but all the preservatives in the MRE's he eats keep him looking like he's 19 years old.

I have a nephew named Steve. When he was still a young boy I was visiting my sister and I asked "Is Stevie a picky eater ?". She turned from her work at the sink and with a hand on her hip said "That boy never said "Yuck" in his life.". Sound like anyone we know ?

meat patty when it realizes it’s about to be eaten:
You've got to be impressed with the food science behind making these. For it to still be edible after 28 years is quite amazing.
A lot of it is the excellent trilaminate packaging and process similar to canning that goes into putting this stuff in before vacuum sealing. A bit of it is extra antioxidants thrown in for good measure. Plus I bet Steve here gets the very well stored ones in correct and even temperature conditions.

I started this thinking it would be really boring to watch but people on Reddit were touting the channel so I thought it would be worth at least trying. This dude's personality is 100% of the reason this channel is successful. Almost contagious positivity and enthusiasm when exploring something I can only describe as almost borderline fall asleep to content... it's just impressive and refreshing to say the least. I am now somehow interested in tasting decade old food rations because of Steve's positivity. Truly impressively unique content creation. I wish I had Steve's attitude about anything in my life. Maybe watching more of his videos will help me get there one day.

this has easily been one of my favorite youtube channels for years now. steve, despite the content being only vaguely relevant to my typical interests, i always enjoy watching all of your videos and learning not only about both historical and contemporary knowledge regarding countries and their militaries through the MREs, but also a nice little bit of culinary facts as if also watching a cooking show. you provide such unique content with a gleeful, inquisitive, and informative perspective/attitude. not to mention, you are just an incredibly likable human, and the catchphrases you have minted always bring a smile to my, and clearly many other's, faces.
thank you so much for being a creator, steve, and providing us with these relaxing, yet enthralling videos out of the joy of your own heart. it's just so refreshing, and you deserve any success and happiness you find in this life, particularly as a result of these gifts you give us.
i may never be able to hear air reaching equillibrium with its surroundings after opening a food container again and not think, "nice hiss!"
much love from atlanta, georgia, and a grateful subscriber for many years! 💜🥰💜
[p.s. your videos have kept me company during not so fun times in the hospital back when i initially discovered you, and it truly brought some levity and positivity to an otherwise rather drab experience. i appreciate you for that!!]
Ditto, not really into MREs or military stuff but it's just so wholesome when Steve opens an old MRE and finds something in good condition when you can hear the excitement in his voice. I want to love something as much as Steve loves 30 year old vegetable crackers.

It's interesting to see what America thought would be palatable to people from other cultures. It's such a simple meal and yet all the components in it are made of foods universally liked by both adults and children across the world, with an American twist due to the turkey. It impresses me!
Plus matching religious and potential allergies.
Lots of flour pastries and a piece of turkey without a side dish. It's like leftovers from dinner or lunch. Do not be offended, I understand that the price matters, but what is there to admire? Turkey? Few people love her at all.
@@Sergej_Efremov It’s a common native bird in the USA. It’s famous for the first people from Europe coming over to America in the 1600. It is not good tasting, but is eaten on a holiday close to Christmas in the USA.

Look how many calories there are in cheap sugar. Sugar in jam, sugar in drink. Sugar in raisins. It looks like the main source of calories in this ration is sugar. The trick that ration manufacturers do is that they add a bag of sugar to increase the calorie content of the diet as a whole. As if upon arrival in America, immigrants if sugar.

It's awesome seeing and hearing how excited you get at these MRE'S Steve!! Your MRE reviews are the best!!! My favorite part is when you get so excited you get the shakes. It shows how passionate you are about these MRE'S! Keep these awesome reviews coming!!
The age of this is reminding me of the first MRE I ate. It was like, fourteen or so years ago, we'd just moved into a new place with some roommates. We didn't have any regular food, but one of my dad's friends had some old 90's MREs. If I'm remembering it all it was chili mac, had some dehydrated fruit, oranges I think, those crackers, and some peanut butter. This takes me back, man.
I just discovered this channel the other day and I have watched several videos and they are absolutely interesting to watch, especially the ones that feature the really old rations! Thanks for sharing this history!
I started watching MRE Steve videos when my first son was born in late 2016. Many late nights! Still enjoying these videos.
Watching Steve savor and analyze the flavor with his eyes closed is awe inspiring. The Master at work!
We had a natural disaster locally about 10 years ago and luckily me and my property was spared… but the National Guard handed out MREs to anyone… and that was some of the best food I’ve ever ate. Near gourmet quality.

Glad to see new videos again. I been stuck at home awaiting multiple surgeries. Love these videos. Thank you
I don't know what it is, and i've been following Steve for eons now... but whenever he gets excited about something, it brings a smile to my face. It's probably the genuine emotion in his voice, someone who really is, 100% interested in something, and the second hand enjoyment someone gets from observing them. If i had to liken it to something... it's probably the effect one gets when they leave gifts under the tree, and then sees the giftee's happiness.
The crackers, called Dry Wall, were in MCI rations issued by the Florida National Guard in 1985. They look the same as were in this ration.

Hi Steve, Love your reviews and as a Canadian its been cool to see the evolution of Canadian military ration over time. For that alone I thank you!!!!
I really like your content style and can say I've really enjoyed watching them. Have you heard of Total Prepare MRE's? i recently bought a crate (12 pack) and I'm curious if you've tried them before.
I have no interest in military history or rations but I find Steve's videos absolutely fascinating and quite relaxing too!
Quite relaxing and not like an asmr because what I like from Steve is that he speaks in a calm normal voice. While I find ASMRs as bad because they are like actively trying whisper and make every subtle noise audible which for me who relays heavily on hearing drives me insane because how am I supposed to relax when a fruit fly sounds like a train in the asmr.
I love it it when you stir the drink with rhythmicity and tone!
Can't wait to reach home to see this properly... Respect from Trinidad Steve
Hey right on hope you enjoy them later, Kirvann! All the best to ya from sunny Florida
I wasn't even in the womb when this was made and this is still edible?! I don't feel to worried about having MRE's in my emergency bags and kits anymore.
Eh. They need to be stored correctly. The MREs that are still edible 10+ years after being produced have been stored in basically ideal conditions for their entire life (a dark, cool place without any pests or bugs), and were never ever disturbed.
A good rule of thumb is to rotate your MREs every 4-5 years as needed, especially if they're getting moved around, etc.
@Ban this youtube MCWs are super clutch, but a bit inconvenient because of the water requirements. But you're right, they do store better.
I watch these videos to help myself eat. It's not easy to put food in my system, but it helps when I feel like someone is eating with me. I am probably one of a few that do this.

I think this is my favourite UA-cam channel because I've never seen Steve try to sell his content. He just follows the same structure time after time and let's the subject shine. It's amazing to see someone succeed by just doing the thing they love and not changing anything.
When I was a kid I ate ration packs in Bosnia and now I still love canned and freeze dried food. 😋 Something so comforting about it.

Fantastic editing and content. I've watched your videos for years and really enjoy them great job Steve!
Okay, so in the Chinese ration video also uploaded today, Steve has a beard and shorter hair, now he has a goatee and longer hair. While it is possible that he simply records the videos in advance and uploads them at a later date, it's much more likely that there are many Steves across many timelines. Why is this the more likely solution, you ask?
How else do you explain him getting his hands on these old rations? Time travel, that's how. Notice the "OUTATIME" license plate from Back to the Future? It's been staring us in the face all this time.
One day I hope to feel happiness like Steve looking at that vegetable cracker
That honestly looks better than the rations they gave my dad between 1986-2006 in the Army or me from 2002-2006 in the Army....seems slightly more healthy and flavorful.
More than one or two mre reviews in a month its a blessed time of the year thank you for making my day and everybody elses day better steve. Thank you for the efforts in sourcing and reviewing these rations to archive them for historical purposes for our enjoyment.

"A perfectly aged, old raisin" I feel attacked. I came here for the review and left with my dignity in tatters!
Love these videos though Steve, if nothing else you will remain as a fantastic historical archive and for that we should all be grateful.
Another nice informative review. The cost of the specific printing alone, on the packaging of the ration must have made them not financially viable for mass production.
Thanks Sam. I can only wonder how many of these were produced, and for how much per ration? That is info I'd love to find out about someday for any of this stuff.
