    Steve is the greatest. He doesn't upload frequently. He doesn't beg for likes or subscribers. But not only does he show an actiual _passion_ and taste for MREs but he discusses actual science and nutritional facts and only uploads when he has something to say.And just actual _scientific_ information about carbs and calaroies, and even weight and such. Not just for the hell of it, nothing for regular views, or begging for subscribers, just pure _quality_ - Steve is just fantastic.

    As a prior service man, I brought how some old school MREs to home and fed some to my grandfather. He was a former marine that saw very heavy combat in WWII. As he ate, he began to weep because of how good it was and remembered how it was in the 40’s. We talked about our service and he told me how hungry and thirst they were at times. He told me that if they would have had those back then, things would have been so much easier. We have no idea how good we have it.

      I've read stories of Greatest Generation houses being cleaned after their passing, with cash squirreled away here and there, under beds, behind pictures, in walls. A very resourceful, frugal, and practical generation of Americans. We should try our best to learn from them while they're still in the memory of our living parents and grandparents, as they've unfortunately largely passed on by now.

    • @Comrade-Canuck
      @Comrade-Canuck 8 місяців тому

      Not to argue, or rain on your parade, but I don't think that is a good idea. It can kill babies.
      In the (70's?) Nestle heavily marketed their baby formula in South America, but the problem was that they didn't have much clean water to make it with. Once a mother stops breastfeeding, she can no longer produce breast milk naturally, ending up with a bunch of babies in South America that couldn't be fed. Resulting in at least a 27% increase in infant deaths in those countries.
      War Zones and the likes are not reliable enough (imo) to safely provide adequate water to everyone.

    • @kin2naruto
      @kin2naruto 8 місяців тому +14

      Realistically? The BEST nutrition for an infant is giving the breastfeeding mother priority on food. And commercial infant formula is already the cutting edge for nutrition. (Aka - still inferior to breastfeeding)
      And "replacing" the milk with formula for as little as three days will dry up the mother's supply. Thus forcing the family on expensive formula until the baby is weaned.

And Steve really seems to understand and appreciate that aspect.

      The thing I like about Steve is that he brings real knowledge to his review. Unlike a lot of reviewers, Steve genuinely knows what he’s talkikg about. I’ve seen other reviewers that will say things like, “hmmm… what’s this? Eeew, I don’t like it!” One reviewer even thought that the Esbit stove fuel tablets were food. One had an older ration that included cigarettes and refused to light one of them. Steve will smoke that bad boy. I’m not even a cigarette smoker (I do enjoy the occasional cigar) but I love to see him try out the antique cigarettes.

    • @jastrapper190
      @jastrapper190 Рік тому

      @@cinedelasestrellas He’s not perfect. Some of his Survival kit reviews… let’s just say he could use some training in the use of various components… a stupid example that comes to mind was he didn’t know about the IR chemical light (he thought was defective) or the IR finger light (which he thought had dead batteries) in one of the newest USAF pilot survival/medical modules. But to his credit he corrected the video with subtitles and left them as they were filmed (if my memory serves me correctly). He is one of my favorite UA-cam people because he is “expert level” when it comes to rations and his passion (from what I see and hear) has gotten him into survival kits (which is something I’ve dumped alot of time and effort into the history and designs of military and civilian kits) my passion. He also is authentic and has a “hook”. Great style. When you say… “let’s get this out onto a tray… NICE” I’ve heard numerous people say that. You can tell he really has great interest in the content he is creating. I used to work at a State Veterans Home and there was nothing the old guys liked more than watching the MRE videos. It was a universal hit. With everybody.

    Back in 2021 we had hurricane Ida hit us pretty hard. So a lot of people got MREs here and for some reason people really hate the things here, so I ended up with quite a lot because nobody wanted the things after the hurricane had passed and the cleanup was pretty well done. I'd bring them to work and eat them for lunch because it was quick and easy and there was enough variety in menus to where it didn't get too old. Well one of my coworkers said oh yeah I have 10 cases of MREs you can have I'll drop them off for you and it ended up being one case of the brown military rations and then nine cases of these humanitarian rations. Needless to say not being in an emergency situation I got burntout on humanitarian rations very quickly

      There may be people selling stuff inappropriately. But it is very normal for militaries to need to update or otherwise replace their outdated equipment and supplies. Rations specifically will have a much shorter storage life than most things, so I think it is very normal to find a steady supply of slightly older rations reaching the civilian market. This is actually good because it allows some cost recovery for what would otherwise be wasted. Of course, it would be better to avoid over producing in the first place, but some amount of over production is required to avoid under production, which would be worse.

    I'm genuinely glad that the MRE supply chain is being used not only to help the boys overseas but also to distribute effective, lasting aid options. This MRE looks solid, and one I'd love to take on a long hike - if it didn't need to be sent to a struggling nation/people elsewhere!

      I keep 2 in my backpacking pack (havent actually gone backpacking yet lol) I will say I tried menu #4 and the food is actually not bad. the chemical taste from MRE's taste similar to the same chemical taste from a hershey bar so if you can withstand that the foods pretty solid! Lot better hot then cold though thats for sure

    I think the smoothies and the jam are a very smart item to add to these. You're right that a lot of people who get these might be sick and can't even eat solid food. It could get them back to health if they went through some kind of natural disaster.

      iirc these hdrs were made to have components that are suitable to be eaten by infants (eg soft food like smoothies and jam)

    The new HDR looks way more bean-focused than the previous generation menus (which had more rice/barley). Which makes sense, since the absolute best entree off the old menu was the "Peas in Tomato Sauce" which was actually chickpeas. People have been preserving beans for thousands of years, with this powerful legume easily holding its flavor and texture where other less robust materials end up as slop. I feel like too many entrees in the regular military MRE try to reach for the moon using exotic materials, where the humble bean would usually do the job better.

      Us cavalry on the frontier would go "40 Miles a day on Beans and Hay" for a reason! It gets the job done

      Beans are easy to grow too. In the olden days, farmers in my country would plant beans and other legumes between seasons because they restore the terrain, plus as you said, beans are a very good food. And they grow very fast too.

      Well, beans might be great in various ways, but on their own as the entire main? No way, lol and 2 pouches of _just_ beans, I’d be so disappointed if I were starving, and I have been before, that’s when you want meats the most. Moral is such a consideration for these things, I’m surprised nobody realized, a can of beans is colloquially known as the most basic, pathetic ration, if you’re down to just beans, trust me you’re not having a good time. In 2023 when they can make vegetables into almost anything there’s no excuse, I mean you’d be disappointed if the ration was just a big bag of peanut butter but that’s technically a great survival food too. Why stop there, just hand out water and powered mixes of everything needed, and even all flavored the same, if it’s good enough that’s all that’s necessary right?

      Well, it's also objectively cheaper and less effort to produce since rice and barley aren't as produced stateside. The first being a climate reason, the latter simply being processing and demand. Ofc barley is produced a lot, and rice is too, but beans are the most widespread and cheap crop many agricultural states produce. So really it's just whatever is cheapest, and whatever the government can make with minimal effort. Sad to say.
