The mre rice was generally better than the potatoes and would have been a better choice in my opinion. We can't win them all, but that was an excellent mre in its time.
I think that's the problem with this menu. They tried to make curry more palatable for the masses, but all they ended up doing was make a bland curry-like thing, with a horribly textured chicken disk. What makes curry so good is the burst of flavor in your mouth you get from the spices
Gosh Steve words can't describe how much I love your videos! I've been watching since I was a teenager and I'm 23 now! This MRE was produced when I was 4 😂

That music reminds me of the action moves we'd rent on VHS from the local mom-and-pop video store in the mid 80's every time I hear it. All it needs is the VCR hiss and the click of the tape starting and it'd be perfect nostalgia.
Started my journey on becoming an American in 2004 when this was made. I got my citizenship ship in January of this year when it was eaten. Thanks, Steve, for the momento!
The nostalgia of seeing the MREs that my dad would bring home and let my brother and I eat. Idk why but a feel a profound sense of sadness realizing that was 20 years ago.
Steve, I'm so glad you got this menu out on the tray. Veteran here, and I was in Iraq from September 2003-2004. Chow halls had not really been set up when i was there, so we got an MRE for lunch everyday. My favorite was the menu 10 chili mac. I always used to mix half my cheese spread and all of the ground red pepper into the main and it was always delicious. I didn't know any guy that liked country captain chicken. I tried it once, and it was weird. It was like I just didn't know what was going on with it. The ones I always stayed away from were this one and menu 12 black bean and rice burrito. Not sure what was in that retort pouch, but it sure wasn't a burrito. Also, that whole year, I never got a coffee that was good and we didn't get any rations older than a year.
@No-one-Survives Sorry I can't remember. I remember one time getting this chocolate mint poundcake, where there was a nice glaze on the top with little chocolate chips inside. Or maybe it was a chocolate mint brownie? Sorry man, I can't think of getting any coffee crisp, but man I know I would've fought for that mre menu all the time!
I was a member of the 94th ENG unit w/3rd ID and we fixed up BIAP after it was bombed and got the infrastructure up and running. After that the Air Force was able to come in and we eventually got a PX and Burger King. We ate MRE's every day (almost) until the rest of the resources came in. Talk about shittin' bricks 😂
Good to know! I remember going to BIAP for a week because I think we needed to repair some thermal weapon sights? I remember we brought them over to these Australian guys. You better believe i ate at that burger king for lunch that whole week! I also bought this huge zebra pattern blanket from one of the local vendors. Still have it today, its super comfortable.@@thorshuatus
@thorshuatus In my year in Iraq, I only got to come to BIAP for about 3 or 4 days? I remember we had to get these thermal sights repaired, and there were these Australian dudes that we brought them to. That Burger King was a godsend for those few days!
I remember when I was in Iraq in 2007- we were given some of these because they were the only available thing we could have had before we went out to establish an outpost. Little did we know that they were not only handed down from the outgoing unit, they were discards that had been left in the Sun for god-knows-how-long and eventually dumped in some billeting back at the forward operating base. I will never forget how it tasted going down, and I will never forget the horrible experience of it coming out
I opened an MRE in Iraq in 2004 and wondered why everything was covered in melted chocolate. Turns out I had M&Ms that completely melted and just left empty shells behind.
@@insideatent It's pretty traditional. Originally M&M's were for rations in the tropics because they were normally stable. Rations almost always have a chocolate component
You haven’t really had an MRE until you get one out of a pile of cases that have been sitting in the Iraqi sun for 2 weeks. Also drinking sun heated water from a sketchy Haji water bottle.
Mixing the peanut butter with curry was not weird but very clever. It’s like you made a Massaman curry which is pretty much a peanut butter curry. If you ever see it on a menu, it’s usually great.
Not only are your videos incredible, but your outlook on life is so uplifting. No one I know understands when i literally never complain about food. So much of what you feel is based on how you think . Morale comes from within. Keep it up, we all love you Steve!
Your video takes me back to that unforgettable day at Fort Knox during CST. It was a refit day for my platoon, but to our dismay, there was a mistake in the supply. We were not issued MREs as planned. However, our resourceful cadre came to the rescue by salvaging five boxes of MREs from a scorching conex. Little did we know, those MREs had been tucked away in storage for over 20 years, seemingly forgotten since the days of President Bush. Among those ancient rations, I had the opportunity to savor the legendary Country Captain Chicken. Surprisingly, despite the lengthy storage, the meal held up relatively well, with its packaging intact. The first bite, though, revealed a hint of staleness that reminded me of the passage of time. Nevertheless, it tasted decent, considering the circumstances. But we quickly learned an essential lesson - never consume MREs that are bloated or discolored.
@@cole009productions7 Some people had digestion issues, however, most was having severe constipation. During our FTXs, we never had time to eat our MREs. We had maybe two and a half minutes at best 3 times a day. For 12 days I lived on salted peanuts, crackers, and peanut butter. I lost about 20 lbs.

This was the very first MRE I ever ate back when I first started ROTC. Since I was the FNG, I didn’t know any better, and no one told me. I didn’t think it was too bad though. That same weekend I also got an MRE with Charms candies in it, and I managed to get lost and ruin my boots in a marsh. So I had a great first introduction to MREs that weekend.

I knew I wasn't the only one that misses those. I joined the Army in the 80's when we still had the original "dirty dozen", the entrees were terrible overall but you couldn't beat the side dishes like the fruit and the nut cakes. Now MRE's are loaded up with sugar and junk food, different tastes these days I guess.

But you always keep a great balance, which is what i think keeps everyone keep back.
steve is always unabashedly himself in these videos. That's why they're so consistent. This is just SteveMRE1989's natural, real life demeanor.

I wish more channels like this existed on UA-cam. No bullshit sponsored segments, begging for donations, telling us to like and subscribe, just pure unadulterated content. Wish more content creators were like this guy.
He’s like a UA-camr from the golden age
Yes he is a rare breed on this platform...
Straight up, the "Call to subscribe" actually does a hell of a lot for your channel. You just have to keep it to two seconds and make it brief, majority make it a huge thing.
I usually automatically dislike videos and avoid subscribing to creators that tell me to do so. I will make up my own fucking mind if I want to or not.

I notice that Steve avoided the mash potatoes as if they were radioactive! Always very happy to enjoy a new MRE video from the Master.
Yes I was wondering about that, it looked like he had a spoonful of it towards the end, but no mention! 🤢
@@Petertronic He mentioned they smelled rancid
I had a very recent MRE over the holiday weekend that came with garlic mashed potatoes. One bite filled me with regret, and I usually like MREs
The mre rice was generally better than the potatoes and would have been a better choice in my opinion. We can't win them all, but that was an excellent mre in its time.
They had milk and butter would have been very bad after 20 years
I think that's the problem with this menu. They tried to make curry more palatable for the masses, but all they ended up doing was make a bland curry-like thing, with a horribly textured chicken disk. What makes curry so good is the burst of flavor in your mouth you get from the spices
Seasoning to the rescue
The hissing of the containers and the crinkling of the wrappers. And the little historic factoids you tell. Really appreciate this channel. Keep it up
Steve knows his audience. He gave us everything in this video. Old ration….eating the ration, nice hiss, drinking the coffee. THANK YOU!
It was a sweet hiss
All that was missing was him saying he's not going to eat something and then immediately eating it anyway.

PS love the Stache!!
That bean burrito was the absolute worst.
@thorshuatus In my year in Iraq, I only got to come to BIAP for about 3 or 4 days? I remember we had to get these thermal sights repaired, and there were these Australian dudes that we brought them to. That Burger King was a godsend for those few days!

Steve I really appreciate all the effort you put into these videos along with the information you provide on these rations keep up the amazing work
I love Steve. He was smelling that poptarts and literally said “here” like we could smell it too. I love it!
I will never forget how it tasted going down, and I will never forget the horrible experience of it coming out

the genius who thought lets put chocolate in a ration..

Peanut curries are a classic Thai thing.
I thought massaman curry was made with coconut

Your enthusiasm and genuine excitement never ceases to make me smile, and laugh. Thanks Steve. All the best.
So what was the aftermath?
@@cole009productions7 The aftermath was bloated and discolored . . . . . .
@@brantonzhang hoo, maybe I should follow that diet, haha. Jokes aside, that experience must have left a mark on you, or at the very least, your bowels.

I rarely comment on any videos on UA-cam. But I have to tell you, every time you clank your spoon on the rim of the glass and it makes different notes, it fills me with joy.
The worst part of that generation of MRE is they no longer had the freeze dried styrofoam fruit. Those were my favorite thing in the MRE.
@@Raskolnikov70 I served in the 80's and I'm the one weirdo who liked the dehydrated beef and pork patties. I thought they were pretty good without water right out of the pack.
