When I got it on, a screen popped up for Samsung DeX-- currently downloading it. Looks like many newer Samsung phones have this, I have a Note 8 I bought new in 2018. Waiting for DeX to download on my laptop to see what else is needed but I *think* it only requires a usb cable in order to use my phone via my laptop. Your videos were extremely helpful and I appreciate you making them!! The quotes I've gotten to replace my screen are about $200 and it looks like buying a new screen and replacing it myself would cost about the same. Thank you for the $20 solution! Ready to upgrade to a new phone soon anyway, this will get me by for the moment and allow me to pull some much needed information off my current phone.

You can also just boot into recovery mode it usually has debugging enabled that way. Just power on the phone holding vol up and down and power release on screen turning on.
Hey Olivia, even though USB Debugging is enabled on my phone, I do get a prompt asking me "Allow USB Debugging" on home screen whenever I connect with my laptop and my phone is neither touchable and nor screen is visible. How to address this situation. No lock are there. Vysor also says click on "Allow USB debugging" prompt.
You literally saved me with this. I had the hub and had already connected my mouse directly to my old phone and was able to turn on wifi. I just never thought that if I connected it to the hub, that using the keyboard would allow me to enter my passcode. I just needed to unlock my old broken device to be able to use Samsung smart switch. I have worked at trying to unlock my phone since 10 am EST to 5pm. I literally exhausted all options. As did Verizon/Asurion tech support. I couldn't connect to an external screen because the Flip 4 doesn't come equipped with that tech. I couldn't remote unlock using Smart Things because Samsung removed that feature. I was actually about to try vysor but my laptop wasn't detecting my phone in order for me to see it in file manager. One of the reasons it wasn't detecting it said I may need to turn on USB Debugging. That is how I ended on your video 7 hours later and your video is the one that resolved my issue. Hi Olivia, thank you for your very helpful videos on USB debugging with a blank screen. I gained a lot of useful information from watching these. Most importantly, it confirmed my belief that there should be some way to access a phone with a blank screen, even though I have been repeatedly told by Verizon and Pixel support that I cannot. I have been working on my Pixel 3a XL for the last week after its screen randomly decided to go blank, although it was still responsive to touch. Hooking the phone up to my mouse and keyboard allowed me to unlock my phone, which was a game changer. That being said, the rest of the tips and tricks you mentioned, while interesting, did not directly help me for specific reasons. First, not only was my USB debugging off, but also the Pixel USB preferences default to charge only. So I couldn't just connect the phone to a PC and access my files from there. Next. I watched your part 2 video and bought myself the USB C - USB A - HDMI dongle. I was so excited when I received it. But when I hooked it up to my TV - nothing! Come to find out, the Pixel does not have a video output so HDMI cables do not work for screen mirroring. The phone is designed to only work with Chromecast to cast to a screen - and I was not willing to spend that much just to access the display. You can purchase a DisplayLink certified dongle, but that was more expensive than the dongle I already bought, and I didn't want to purchase it and then find out something else was still missing. So I played around with my phone, and I finally got it to work - screen mirrored on PC and with full control with mouse and keyboard! For no extra purchase! I ended up not needing the dongle either. I figured I would leave my solution in your comments, so that other people that may find themselves in the same boat as me may hopefully find this useful. (Sorry about the long post) I used the talkback feature on my phone to "see" (or echolocate :)) the screen. On my phone pressing the volume up and down buttons simultaneously turns on talkback, or I can use the Google assistant ("OK google") to enable it. Essentially it makes the screen "talk back" or announce where I am on my screen. (Side note - this is a useful accessibility feature designed for blind or low vision smartphone users!) Of course I had to plug in my earphones, coz I found it annoying that everyone around me would know exactly what I was doing with my phone, lol. Next, I hooked up my mouse to navigate to where I could change my USB preferences to enable file transfer. Now I could access my screenshots on my PC. I then used the steps outlined in your part 1 video to turn on USB debugging. Next, I looked for screen mirroring apps. Turns out apps like vysor and dr fone require payment, but scrcpy is a free and open source screen mirroring app that is super easy to use. And there you have it. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I never thought I could use my keyboard to unlock my phone. It went black and I could never guess the button positions. Now I managed to install a software to control my phone from pc and backup my files!
Let me just say that these videos of yours are genius! The Connect/screen shot method, and using an OTG cable to enter my passcode with a keyboard. Very creative! I tried plugging my keyboard in to a working phone to see if I could somehow find a way to enable file transfer using just the keyboard, and I'm not sure it's possible. What I wish I could do is find a way to completely power down my phone without touch, so I could maybe boot into recovery mode which allows adb by default.

The problem with my phone is that the screen is blank and file transfer is off and I don't know whether the touch is working or not. I tried to directly connect it to keyboard via OTG but it didn't connect either. Although my USB mouse is connecting with my phone via OTG. But it's of no use as I don't know what the cursor supposed to touch unless I don't have the file transfer mode on to show the screenshots or cursor on the desktop screen. Please help me out. It's Galaxy S7 and I don't want to spend such huge amount on replacing display. I just want my data back. Please guide Olivia
Girl, first of all thank you. I've seen all three of your videos and unfortunately none has worked for me. I got a broken screen with no touch input, I have it locked and probably debugging USB isn't on by default. so I can't do anything about it for now. I'll just have to replace the screen altogether but I want to make it super clear that this has helped in all ways possible, it's just my phone that is F'd up, and I put too much security on it. im a dummy. I bought one of those adapters with HDMI and USB ports in order to connect it to my screen and a mouse, hopefully it'll work and it won't require USB debugging..

Unfortunately, I'm hitting a wall at every turn (screen unresponsive & black, phone is locked, USB debugging not on, not MHL compatible)... this solution seems like it would work but I have a pattern password and not a code/pin. Any chance you have a solution for that? Figure it's a long shot but wanted to ask!

As I showed throughout the video, depending on what type of password you have, you can connect a USB mouse or USB keyboard to your phone and use it to enter your password. As for turning on voice command, if your phone's folders show up on your computer after you unlock it (meaning it's on file transfer mode and not charging only), then you can take screenshots and view them on your computer to see where you are in your phone's menu as you navigate to the voice command settings. You can use a USB mouse as your touch input and use the screenshots on your computer to see what you're doing on your phone screen.
I had the same problem. I have read a lot in many (comments in) clips. These steps (pushing with thumbs, tapping, freeze method etc.) did not help me with my LCD screen issue. Or make screenshots with the OTG (on the go) cable connected to a monitor which is also helpful. For me the OTG didn’t helped. I bought a HUB in witch you can put a monitor (hdmi), mouse (usb-a), keyboard (use a usb-a to sub-c converter for the keyboard port). This did also not helped in the beginning, which is very frustrating and I already had an appointment at a repair shop. Luckily after a few hours trying to make connection with the HUB, somehow the software Dex made a connection with the HUB through the monitor. So when the HUB is connected with all the cables in it, you can press the mobile power button one time and/or backspace onetime or mouse to see something on your monitor, but normally this shouldn’t be necessary. But take note that it may take time for the software to recognize the HUB/monitor and for yourself to find the knowhows of how to make connection with your devices. Also my S21 ultra was in flight mode. If this wasn’t the case you have the possibility to go to Samsung fine my phone website and unlock your phone. So when I had connection with my HUB on the monitor I stopped the flight mode, I went to setup > accounts and back-up and made a backup of my files in the Samsung Cloud and for my pictures/movies in the Google photo app (I bought 200 GB in the Google cloud). You also have the possibility to connect an external hard drive in the HUB so then you don’t have to buy GB. Also I put the USB debugging on in the developers mode.
Awesome idea of connecting keyboard to my phone. How did you figure out Enter twice ? Hats off to your time and effort!! I have a Pixel 3. It still didnt mirror in monitor but, was able to unlock phone successfully with keyboard.
Just a quick question/idea while my mind is working. IF the screen is dead, but touch still works... There could be a 4th method (you gave me the idea). You enable mirroring on the phone using the screenshot method until you can screen-cast the phone using Connect (just as you showed in the first video). Then you plug the OTG cable into the phone and use a mouse to use the phone find on the windows screen. Am I thinking this could possibly be a method 4?? I will have to try it since my phone is cracked/black screen and still capable of touch, and I have OTG enabled on it (I used to use it for midi stuff). My issue is that I after unlocking it, I hear the confirmation click sound and I can get a response from Google assistant. But I still can't see my files on the computer? wonder why.

Using method 2, I have the HDMI connection kit but it will not plug into my Galaxy J3 Eclipse phone's micro USB charge port...which is OTG compatible. The kit you speak about are all sold out but I did find one made by Kasonic.
How can we view the screenshots of the mobile without having the USB debugging on and you have used the Connect app for that purpose in the video #1 but that app is to connect wirelessly and should be on the same network for that purpose your mobile wifi must be turned on, my mobile wifi is turned off.

USB Debugging has nothing to do with OTG. Yes, some phones require OTG to be manually enabled, but that is completely separate from USB Debugging. If you have a phone that requires OTG to be manually enabled, then unfortunately this method won’t work for you if your phone’s display doesn’t respond to touch.
When I connect my broken black phone to my laptop and click it show "this folder is empty" please help Olivia I'm applying all the techniques u are recommending because I feel u will know a way out. And one major problem is when I connect to otg cable too it does not respond.
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. If your phone is OTG compatible, the mouse will automatically connect when you plug it into the phone unless you have a OnePlus phone. I have heard from OnePlus users that OTG connection needs to be turned on manually, but with other phone models it is automatic.

I've unlocked my screen using Find my mobile on the Samsung website but the method with the mouse and keyboard doesnt work, nothing happens when I take screenshot ( the phone would usually vibrate to signal the taken screenshot) and it certainly doesnt show on my pc since I still need to allow MTP. black screen, no touch input have a usb hub plug phone into it through the usb-c cable, plug my keyboard into the hub, do the double enter thing u said and I feel my phone wake up after the first enter cause of a vibration yet when i type in my pin and press enter nothing happens (even if i already have it connected to laptop through charger cable both before and after putting in the pin), it doesnt show up on my laptop and its the same pin ive been using for years so its not like im getting it wrong my drivers and everything are up to date as well anyone any clue what the problem might be?

Is there another method (or way to keep the keys authorization box open on the phone when disconnecting the mouse) so as to authorize the keys between devices when setting up USB debugging? how do you do 'smart switch' with damaged screen on newer models? for e.g u can get the phone unlocked with fingerprint scanner but cannot see the screen to activate smart switch? do you know if drfone software is legit? it extracts data from damaged screen to laptop
Not really, but it was a good try. I have a sony xperia XA f3113 and You need to click the option to see the files from PC and it is not possible since the touch is not working at all. I think the best option is the micro usb hub but it has been so hard to get one.

google pixel 6a here (otg yes, mhl no).. Broken screen (no display, no touch)... by default in charging only mode... also I tried with the mouse/keyboard using a friend's same phone to learn how to access control but since I have in display fingerprint sensor which doesnt work as well, It won't let me in to the pincode menu. doomed.
Hi Olivia, your videos greatly helped. However, I am stuck at one point which is I can see my phone screen on my TV but it is locked (am not talking about the pattern/pin lock screen). But, it always shows me a different type of lock screen with the lock icon that comes when you try to screen mirror (I wish I could attach a photo of this). How do I get past this? I bought the OTG adapter and unlock my phone with it but the problem is that when I take a screenshot while connected to the connect application it does not appear (I tried with a working phone and I don't couldn't find the screenshots on my pc). In addition, I noticed that when I launched connect it did not display the same thing as you, there was this message written in addition to what was written on your screen: "Unable to display the content protected from this device". I checked that my phone is mhl and OTG compatible and it is. I hope you find a solution and thank you in advance.

As mentioned in this video, the only way to retrieve your files through a computer is if your phone is unlocked and on file transfer mode. If your phone doesn’t show up when you plug it into your computer and the instructions in this video weren’t helpful, then unfortunately I don’t know of a way for you to retrieve your files through your computer. One possible way to retrieve your files without having to use a computer would be to follow the method I showed in another one of my videos. I went through the screenshot and USB debugging mode steps successfully but do have one small problem. When using Vysor when I go to lock screen security to customize/disable my knock code it requires to enter the current knock code, but the screen goes blank. Any tips to proceed past this?
I have debugging turned on but when I connect my phone to PC, I am not able to accept the confirmation pop up due to which I'm not able to perform any usb debugging commands. How can I connect a mouse to my phone and phone to my PC all at once so I can use mouse to accept the pop up. I've tried using hub but that doesn't seem to work. Thanks!
It doesn't work on my Samsung A70, the screen is black but I know the phone still works because I can feel it vibrating when I restart it, I tried the first method and the method with the dongle but that didn't work either😪

Some phone models, such as OnePlus, require OTG to manually be turned on. On other models, such as Samsung, OTG automatically kicks in as soon as an external device is connected. If you have a phone that requires OTG to be turned on manually, unfortunately this method won't work and I don't have a solution for that scenario. 😕

Called Samsung today , they said it is impossible for me to hook up the phone to the t.v. even though I have the USB adapter and the HDMI cord , the phone doesn't work on HDMI, that only works on older phones.
Your specific phone model may not have the capability to connect to an external monitor, but a lot of modern phones do. When I made part 2 ( ua-cam.com/video/YF-XNHMZlFU/v-deo.html ) in 2019, I demonstrated using the Samsung Galaxy S8; which was only a 2 year old phone at the time. In order to be able to connect your phone to an external monitor your phone has to have MHL compatibility. In order to control your phone using a USB mouse or keyboard your phone needs to have OTG compatibility. Having the cord but not having a phone with those capabilities, isn't going to work. Sorry if your phone doesn't have those 2 functionalities, but as I said in the video, "no solution is perfect; no solution is going to work for everybody."

I figured I would leave my solution in your comments, so that other people that may find themselves in the same boat as me may hopefully find this useful. (Sorry about the long post)
I used the talkback feature on my phone to "see" (or echolocate :)) the screen. On my phone pressing the volume up and down buttons simultaneously turns on talkback, or I can use the Google assistant ("OK google") to enable it. Essentially it makes the screen "talk back" or announce where I am on my screen. (Side note - this is a useful accessibility feature designed for blind or low vision smartphone users!) Of course I had to plug in my earphones, coz I found it annoying that everyone around me would know exactly what I was doing with my phone, lol. Next, I hooked up my mouse to navigate to where I could change my USB preferences to enable file transfer. Now I could access my screenshots on my PC. I then used the steps outlined in your part 1 video to turn on USB debugging.
Next, I looked for screen mirroring apps. Turns out apps like vysor and dr fone require payment, but scrcpy is a free and open source screen mirroring app that is super easy to use.
And there you have it. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I never thought I could use my keyboard to unlock my phone. It went black and I could never guess the button positions. Now I managed to install a software to control my phone from pc and backup my files!

Let me just say that these videos of yours are genius! The Connect/screen shot method, and using an OTG cable to enter my passcode with a keyboard. Very creative! I tried plugging my keyboard in to a working phone to see if I could somehow find a way to enable file transfer using just the keyboard, and I'm not sure it's possible. What I wish I could do is find a way to completely power down my phone without touch, so I could maybe boot into recovery mode which allows adb by default.

The problem with my phone is that the screen is blank and file transfer is off and I don't know whether the touch is working or not. I tried to directly connect it to keyboard via OTG but it didn't connect either. Although my USB mouse is connecting with my phone via OTG. But it's of no use as I don't know what the cursor supposed to touch unless I don't have the file transfer mode on to show the screenshots or cursor on the desktop screen. Please help me out. It's Galaxy S7 and I don't want to spend such huge amount on replacing display. I just want my data back. Please guide Olivia

Girl, first of all thank you. I've seen all three of your videos and unfortunately none has worked for me. I got a broken screen with no touch input, I have it locked and probably debugging USB isn't on by default. so I can't do anything about it for now. I'll just have to replace the screen altogether but I want to make it super clear that this has helped in all ways possible, it's just my phone that is F'd up, and I put too much security on it. im a dummy.

I bought one of those adapters with HDMI and USB ports in order to connect it to my screen and a mouse, hopefully it'll work and it won't require USB debugging..

Unfortunately, I'm hitting a wall at every turn (screen unresponsive & black, phone is locked, USB debugging not on, not MHL compatible)... this solution seems like it would work but I have a pattern password and not a code/pin. Any chance you have a solution for that? Figure it's a long shot but wanted to ask!

As I showed throughout the video, depending on what type of password you have, you can connect a USB mouse or USB keyboard to your phone and use it to enter your password.
As for turning on voice command, if your phone's folders show up on your computer after you unlock it (meaning it's on file transfer mode and not charging only), then you can take screenshots and view them on your computer to see where you are in your phone's menu as you navigate to the voice command settings. You can use a USB mouse as your touch input and use the screenshots on your computer to see what you're doing on your phone screen.
I had the same problem. I have read a lot in many (comments in) clips. These steps (pushing with thumbs, tapping, freeze method etc.) did not help me with my LCD screen issue. Or make screenshots with the OTG (on the go) cable connected to a monitor which is also helpful. For me the OTG didn’t helped. I bought a HUB in witch you can put a monitor (hdmi), mouse (usb-a), keyboard (use a usb-a to sub-c converter for the keyboard port). This did also not helped in the beginning, which is very frustrating and I already had an appointment at a repair shop. Luckily after a few hours trying to make connection with the HUB, somehow the software Dex made a connection with the HUB through the monitor. So when the HUB is connected with all the cables in it, you can press the mobile power button one time and/or backspace onetime or mouse to see something on your monitor, but normally this shouldn’t be necessary. But take note that it may take time for the software to recognize the HUB/monitor and for yourself to find the knowhows of how to make connection with your devices. Also my S21 ultra was in flight mode. If this wasn’t the case you have the possibility to go to Samsung fine my phone website and unlock your phone. So when I had connection with my HUB on the monitor I stopped the flight mode, I went to setup > accounts and back-up and made a backup of my files in the Samsung Cloud and for my pictures/movies in the Google photo app (I bought 200 GB in the Google cloud). You also have the possibility to connect an external hard drive in the HUB so then you don’t have to buy GB. Also I put the USB debugging on in the developers mode.
Awesome idea of connecting keyboard to my phone. How did you figure out Enter twice ? Hats off to your time and effort!! I have a Pixel 3. It still didnt mirror in monitor but, was able to unlock phone successfully with keyboard.
Just a quick question/idea while my mind is working. IF the screen is dead, but touch still works... There could be a 4th method (you gave me the idea).
You enable mirroring on the phone using the screenshot method until you can screen-cast the phone using Connect (just as you showed in the first video).
Then you plug the OTG cable into the phone and use a mouse to use the phone find on the windows screen. Am I thinking this could possibly be a method 4?? I will have to try it since my phone is cracked/black screen and still capable of touch, and I have OTG enabled on it (I used to use it for midi stuff). Regardless, I have enough to keep me busy for a day. Thank you!!!

Using method 2, I have the HDMI connection kit but it will not plug into my Galaxy J3 Eclipse phone's micro USB charge port...which is OTG compatible. The kit you speak about are all sold out but I did find one made by Kasonic.
How can we view the screenshots of the mobile without having the USB debugging on and you have used the Connect app for that purpose in the video #1 but that app is to connect wirelessly and should be on the same network for that purpose your mobile wifi must be turned on, my mobile wifi is turned off.

What about if the USB configuration setting is not set to recognize the phone how the screen will show on the computer?
If your phone is on charging only mode and you are unable to see the screen, unfortunately this method won’t work for you.

hi, for the otg cable to work most phones need USB debugging to be on :)
USB Debugging has nothing to do with OTG. Yes, some phones require OTG to be manually enabled, but that is completely separate from USB Debugging.
If you have a phone that requires OTG to be manually enabled, then unfortunately this method won’t work for you if your phone’s display doesn’t respond to touch.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. If your phone is OTG compatible, the mouse will automatically connect when you plug it into the phone unless you have a OnePlus phone. I have heard from OnePlus users that OTG connection needs to be turned on manually, but with other phone models it is automatic.

I've unlocked my screen using Find my mobile on the Samsung website but the method with the mouse and keyboard doesnt work, nothing happens when I take screenshot ( the phone would usually vibrate to signal the taken screenshot) and it certainly doesnt show on my pc since I still need to allow MTP. plug phone into it through the usb-c cable, plug my keyboard into the hub, do the double enter thing u said and I feel my phone wake up after the first enter cause of a vibration yet when i type in my pin and press enter nothing happens (even if i already have it connected to laptop through charger cable both before and after putting in the pin), it doesnt show up on my laptop

I do have a question: my phone isn't MHL compatible, has a broken screen that is only partially visible (but can be used by your mouse method), but as I'm trying to mirror my phone to my laptop and I set up debugging, I have to unplug my mouse from the phone and I promptly lose the keys authorization dialog box to match it with the keys authorization on the laptop. Is there another method (or way to keep the keys authorization box open on the phone when disconnecting the mouse) so as to authorize the keys between devices when setting up USB debugging? Not really, but it was a good try. I have a sony xperia XA f3113 and You need to click the option to see the files from PC and it is not possible since the touch is not working at all. I think the best option is the micro usb hub but it has been so hard to get one.

google pixel 6a here (otg yes, mhl no).. Broken screen (no display, no touch)... by default in charging only mode... also I tried with the mouse/keyboard using a friend's same phone to learn how to access control but since I have in display fingerprint sensor which doesnt work as well, It won't let me in to the pincode menu. doomed.

Hi Olivia, your videos greatly helped. However, I am stuck at one point which is I can see my phone screen on my TV but it is locked (am not talking about the pattern/pin lock screen). But, it always shows me a different type of lock screen with the lock icon that comes when you try to screen mirror (I wish I could attach a photo of this). How do I get past this? I tried numerous clicks, drag and drop with my mouse but nothing works. Appreciate your input

I bought the OTG adapter and unlock my phone with it but the problem is that when I take a screenshot while connected to the connect application it does not appear (I tried with a working phone and I don't couldn't find the screenshots on my pc). In addition, I noticed that when I launched connect it did not display the same thing as you, there was this message written in addition to what was written on your screen: "Unable to display the content protected from this device". I checked that my phone is mhl and OTG compatible and it is. I hope you find a solution and thank you in advance.

As mentioned in this video, the only way to retrieve your files through a computer is if your phone is unlocked and on file transfer mode. If your phone doesn’t show up when you plug it into your computer and the instructions in this video weren’t helpful, then unfortunately I don’t know of a way for you to retrieve your files through your computer.
One possible way to retrieve your files without having to use a computer would be to follow the method I showed in another one of my videos. However, for this method to work, your phone has to be both OTG & MHL compatible: ua-cam.com/video/cz3dlQ6g334/v-deo.html

It doesn't work on my Samsung A70, the screen is black but I know the phone still works because I can feel it vibrating when I restart it, I tried the first method and the method with the dongle but that didn't work either😪

Some phone models, such as OnePlus, require OTG to manually be turned on. On other models, such as Samsung, OTG automatically kicks in as soon as an external device is connected. If you have a phone that requires OTG to be turned on manually, unfortunately this method won't work and I don't have a solution for that scenario. 😕

Called Samsung today , they said it is impossible for me to hook up the phone to the t.v. even though I have the USB adapter and the HDMI cord , the phone doesn't work on HDMI, that only works on older phones.
Your specific phone model may not have the capability to connect to an external monitor, but a lot of modern phones do. When I made part 2 ( ua-cam.com/video/YF-XNHMZlFU/v-deo.html ) in 2019, I demonstrated using the Samsung Galaxy S8; which was only a 2 year old phone at the time. In order to be able to connect your phone to an external monitor your phone has to have MHL compatibility. In order to control your phone using a USB mouse or keyboard your phone needs to have OTG compatibility. Having the cord but not having a phone with those capabilities, isn't going to work. Sorry if your phone doesn't have those 2 functionalities, but as I said in the video, "no solution is perfect; no solution is going to work for everybody."

Is your phone OTG compatible? If not, then your phone isn't capable of being operated using a USB mouse.
