  • Remove the old shocks/struts from the rear of a Toyota Sienna 2000 and replace them with new ones. It is important for the stability and handling of your vehicle to have good shocks/struts. This increases the smoothness of the ride and safety of the passengers. Worn out shocks/struts are dangerous.

    Step by step:
    1) Remove the plastic trim cover behind the rear seats
    2) Remove lock nut from top of the shock
    3) Remove retaining nut that secures shock on top
    (Note that it will “explode” as the pressure on the rubber spacer is released - protect yourself)
    4) Now that everything on top is removed, move down under the vehicle
    5) Remove the 14 mm bolt that secures the bottom of the shock, underneath the vehicle
    6) Remove shock from bottom spindle
    7) Remove rust from wheel mount/bottom spindle
    8) Put washer and rubber spacer on top of new shock
    9) Slide new shock in from bottom and onto wheel mount
    10) Fasten bolt, but don’t tighten all the way
    11) Jack up coil spring & wheel so shock protrudes through top
    12) Install mounting hardware on top
    13) Fasten retainer nut while stopping shock from rotating
    14) Rubber spacer should flatten somewhat, but not protrude
    15) Fasten lock nut and replace plastic trim cover
    16) Tighten bottom bolt all the way (14 mm)
    17) Lower vehicle and go for a test drive.

    Thanks for the video. I need to same with my 06 Sienna in near future. To avoid getting the nut shoot out, I think you need to remove the outer nuts (next to the wheel) first so that the shock is fully relieved from the stress, and then remove the internal nuts/bots.

    Excellent video showing everything. I've done it 10 years ago to mine but needed a refresher. I forgot where they connected inside. easy job. I have new washers with mine, so why would you clean up the old rusty ones? I missed that part. thanks. 😁

      Hi John, how are you doing these days? I got a cheap pair from another guy who bailed on his project and it didn't have all the washers. :)

      @@Pen_Pusher I'm getting much older. 😞 My passenger side inside bottom washer was missing and it chewed up the rubber bushing after 10 years. Tried to find them at auto stores and can't. It has such a big hole in it to fit over that mounting stud to the frame. Also, it is much easier to back the rear up onto ramps and just crawl under without removing the tires laying on a blanket or pad. So comfy and easy that way and much less work and faster. 🙂

      @@Pen_Pusher And you too. One day will have to stop. That will be sad. I've always enjoyed mechanics. It was always great not paying someone to do something. Take care of yourself and keep them coming. 🙂 thanks again.

    Thanks for sharing. I need to change the shock absorbers on my 1998 Toyota Sienna. What brand of shock absorbers do you recommend? Thank you.

      I had a ‘98 Sienna and used KYB shocks on the rear.

    Why not jack it on the springs before removing the top bolt so it doesn't shoot out?

    • @Pen_Pusher
      @Pen_Pusher  Рік тому +1

      Do you mean compress the spring? Won't that be increasing the tension on it?

    • @drakeforte5
      @drakeforte5 Рік тому +1

      @@Pen_Pusher I thought it can remove the ballistic nut since it is still in tension like when the tire is on the ground.

      Maybe because the bottom silver cup doesn't have the pucker in it to go through the body hole like the OEM does? I transfered it to my new KYB install.

    • @aaxen7255
      @aaxen7255 3 роки тому

      Or maybe he left out a retainer (silver cup)? I believe it should have a bushing sandwich (two retainers with a bushing in between) on the top of the shock beneath where it pokes through into the interior of the vehicle, and a second bushing sandwich on top inside the vehicle, and then the two nuts go on top of that.

      @@aaxen7255 Thanks, that would make sense. It was not included with the new part & old parts were too rusted to reuse. Next time I will buy better quality parts!
