If you listen to the Excitable Boy album, with Werewolves of London,Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner,Lawyers Guns and Money, this sweet song from this sweet man is in the middle of them.He had a daughter.
In his younger days, I believe he described himself as a 'piano soldier'- was he ever! Once he quipped that he ought to record an entire album of these 'sweet pop songs'. I really wish he'd done so! Dang...
Heard this tune that's ostensibly about his daughter on Pandora. It is my son's 18th Birthday today; I have played Zevon for him, his brother since they were born. I may Tweet, post or discuss this song lyrics with someone (who cares)
Mama, where's your pretty little girl tonight? Trying to run before she can walk, that's right She's growing up, she has a young man waiting She's growing up, she has a young man waiting Wide eyes, she'll be street-wise To the lies and the jive talk But she'll find true love And tenderness on the block Daddy, don't you ask her when she's coming in And when she's home don't ask her where she's been She's going out, she has a young man waiting She's going out, can't keep her young man waiting She'll be okay, let her have her day 'Cause it's a long way, it's a long walk But she'll find true love And tenderness on the block I know how much it hurts to see her go She has a mind of her own, you know She's all grown up, she has a young man waiting She's all grown up, she has a young man waiting She was wide-eyed, now she's street-wise To the lies and the jive talk But she'll find true love And tenderness on the block She'll find true love And tenderness on the block
If you read Crystal Zevon’s biography of him, if includes exerts from Warren’s private journals, he complained about the monitor mixes at his shows often.
Is there the WHOLE SHOW of this concert on video??? Id love to see it if so! Warren on his own with no band.....just a piano and guitar is my favorite. This is the best shot footage of that era that I have ever seen. I really hope more of this footage surfaces for his fans!
Someone had asked Warren what instrument he was playing. He answered the question. On the first occasion, the person who asked the question could not understand what Warren said. "What's that?". He repeats the answer at 0:54 and receives a nod.
Pure unadulterated Zevon. Saw him twice in S.E. Florida. Fifth row right behind Carl Hiaasen. Warren came down to speak to Carl prior to the show. Didn't interrupt a moment between peers. And fix the piano mix, will you?
That this artist is not in the so called R&R Hall of fame just makes that entity seem artistically irrelevant. Can’t be sure of course but I can easily imagine he’d be okay with that.
One of his best songs, vastly underrated.
When this song goes through my head, it goes like this:
To the lies and jive talk
She'll find true love
and tenderness on the block
PIANO
Love this stripped down version. Like your there when he was writing it. Warren was an incredible singer/songwriter. Truly missed.
It's such bullshit that he's still not in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame!😢😐
@@officialclairegmusician Agreed
Warren was just a genius
Yes
I bawl my eyes out whenever I watch this. He was so cool and unknown and he's long gone. It's not fair.
A sign of a great artist. Stripped down to a guitar or piano. Just the voice and the lyrics make it!

That's what his song Piano Fighter is all about.
@@IgnatiusThorogood Right!
God I love this song. Always stay street wise to the lies and the jive talk.
Freddie Whites interpretation of this song is magnificent.
In a day like this warren left us 15 years ago.
Forever Missed.
Igor San Martin im miserable
Holy shit, 15 years?
Time flies.
Miss you Warren.
Struggle becomes beauty and what more proof do we need.
Fantastic. Love this
He wrote this with Jackson Browne, I can hear JB influence in there, afore both.
This is one of my absolute Fav's Shawn Colvin does a great cover on her album Fat City with the Subdudes backing her!
I only knew Shawn Colvin singing this. I love Warren playing this so much better!
pianoo!!
Miss You Warren......RIP♥️
Love with a capital L how he sings on that piano with his eyes shut!👍👍👍🎹🎹🎹
Look at this legend
Masterpiece ❤️

Amen to that
Mama, where's your pretty little girl tonight?
Trying to run before she can walk, that's right
She's growing up, she has a young man waiting
She's growing up, she has a young man waiting
Wide eyes, she'll be street-wise
To the lies and the jive talk
But she'll find true love
And tenderness on the block
Daddy, don't you ask her when she's coming in
And when she's home don't ask her where she's been
She's going out, she has a young man waiting
She's going out, can't keep her young man waiting
She'll be okay, let her have her day
'Cause it's a long way, it's a long walk
But she'll find true love
And tenderness on the block
I know how much it hurts to see her go
She has a mind of her own, you know
She's all grown up, she has a young man waiting
She's all grown up, she has a young man waiting
She was wide-eyed, now she's street-wise
To the lies and the jive talk
But she'll find true love
And tenderness on the block
She'll find true love
And tenderness on the block
This song affected deeply as a young girl knowing that what i felt was real and mattered.
rip SVB
You just have to mention 2 worde warren zevon and that's all you need to know

("Piano!...")

Look up Warren Zevon shoreline theatre. I haven't watched the video yet myself but there are other songs from this show, nonetheless.
xodusattack there is a complete video of this 20 min. set. I was at this show!
matt fowler Thanks for the info! I believe this is the only live video version of this song on the internet. Amazing. Love Warren!
Do you have a link to video ? My man
Wonder why he kept yelling Piano at 0:22 and 0:54🤔

@@sh230968 Huh
It's likely he wanted to hear the piano louder in his monitor speaker. Hope that helps ;)
@@edosantonisingsYou can hear them mixing the piano louder as the song goes on.

Turn his piano up, it’s warren zevon for chrissake
Thank you!
Check out Freddie White's version.
Great version by Freddie.
The Shoreline Amphitheatre can be a cold venue due to being on the SF Bay. His hands must be cold if you know what I mean.
He's got 'teacup finger'.

He wouldn’t have wanted it himself. He always hated people who obsessed over being in this or that phony elite club.
Jimmy Webb level of genius
Credit to his genius gender
I prefer the Freddie White version.
Freddie White's version is heavily based on Zevon's original. Bit more acoustic but the same riffs, unlike Shawn Colvin's version.
I PREFER THE ALBUM.EDITION.MUCH BETTER.
I`ll like this more,I heare it for so long, like it,sorry I`m from Germany
Kinda schmalzhy but that's Jackson yo.
