Hello from Australia. Sorry for your loss. I am a big fan of Warren. Had many of his albums and saw him interviewed many times. Seems like he was a thoughtful, genuine bloke. Susan
A songwriters… songwriter. If you haven’t read his biography compiled by his ex wife… Whom he left his diaries to. You should. Good read.👍 I think it’s called “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” I love me some Zevon.😊👍
@Lunar Passion I know John personally. John changed his last same professionally in the 90s to distinguish himself from the other "John Woods" out there. Most recent, he's credited as an engineer on Fiona Apple's "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" (his daughter Amy is the drummer and was also the drummer in Yortoise).
Agree. I was only 19 ( an Aus song by name actually) when first heard this song, and when it first came out, liked so much, and so very cool but challenging. And Werewolves of London , including, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner and other stuff. Look , Listen and Reflect. Seriously. And read the lyrics. Learn and be Cool.
The ability to simply ENJOY stuff has been beaten out of us, WZ's attitude reminds me of Rory Gallagher's,both centred totally on hittin the crowd hard'n fast, and BOY is that missing today ! R.I.P Warren and Rory...two all time greats !
This is the genius who poured his soul and life into his music- all of it. I miss him sooo. He was the beginning of my life with my husband (another soap opera) that began with excitable boy on Valentine's Day 1978. Oh the memories. No apologies for talent, no apologies for mindless fun. He is not a bad man- quite the opposite. Heaven is rockin'.
I’m glad that this old song still makes you and I feel uncomfortable. I don’t know why, but it’s more shocking than it used to be. I guess it was always a bit much, this song I mean But I’m glad I grew up when I did. I feel bad for most young people. With love, from me.
The R&R Hall of Fame is a joke now. Warren isn't missing out on much. Seriously, The Beastie Boys, Bun Jivi, not saying much about talent now. It's not real true talent that gets artists into the Hall of Fame anymore. Nothing has that special touch that used to be palpable at shows and even hearing a great performance on the radio. I wish I could say what 'the special touch' is because I would go out and hunt it down. Something very important and meaningful is gone now and I miss it more than words can say.
It looks like he really enjoyed music for the fun that he could have with it. I really like when you can see that a musician is enjoying the moment, its fresh
I come here every couple days just to hear John Wood absolutely have his way with a guitar. Absolutely incredible guitar solo and music by everyone all around! Keep on rockin everyone!
I first heard this at work in Austin. Everyone liked my favorite station. The same day, I heard Psychi Killer. I went to the record store immediately and bought both. Wonderful day
The wittiest man i ever had the pleasure of knowing thought the world of Warren Zevon's music. Blessed to have lived in a time they were both walking this world. Cheers
Been a fan of the Man since the 80’s. I don’t think it’s just any coincidence that some of the funniest, most dangerous people I have ever met in my life are fans of Warren Zevon. Miss him.
Ill always remember zevon bc as i watched the vids n writings he made of his final yrs on earth i lost my best friend A.W.H. and one of the last musical conversations i has with him was regarding me asking him bout warren. He said that his father just began telling him how great zevon is a wk b4 i asked him. Ill always love n miss all indicated.
I met him briefly many years ago in Spain..he was on a sojourn..a cantina on the beach, north of barcelona...he was actually working on LG&M..shared a few beers and laughs...it was a young mans' world then...1977, I think...😅
There IS cool music out there challenging lyrics AND music! Haitus Kayote (if I'm spelling them right) A Neo Soul jazz band all in their mid 20's from Melbourne (Aussie no shit) kick ass & Warren would b FLOORED I assure ya!
Do I ever wish Mr. Zevon was still with us. Wish I could have seen him performed but sadly I did not get into Warren until I was a lot older and he had already passed.
He played a live set outside South Station in Boston sometime in the late 90's I believe. He primarily was playing guitar and singing. I don't have the link but I know it was and probably still is on line. He was as usual in great humor that day.
Actually he was really good on guitar: electric (including leads) and acoustic (great stuff on the 12-string). It came a time when he was trying to move away from the piano to guitars. You can see the evolution on his appearences on Letterman.
I love the magic this man made I got to see Pete with Arlo and Ronnie Gilbert and Holly near, they were fab, the spirit of this great land, and it touched and moves me 2 this day.😊
This band played like their lives depended on it, does anybody know what became of these guys? Joe Daniels, the drummer, must be an old man by now. There's no trace of him online.
The intro to this story is eerily similar to my experience of a Carpathian/Polish-American atheist paternal side and a small town WASP Episcopalian maternal side that my father deserted when I was but 5. The first Christmas after Dad left for his silver dollar queen, my presents nicely arranged under the tree were stomped to bits in anger by an "excitable" child. Many of us identified with similar torments as Warren amidst the same familiar/cultural landscape of the 60's and 70's. His music and stories are ours. God, we miss his art.
+Jeffrey Jasin who...was .... that ... guitarist? he's playing fast rock but i'ts with a ton of feel and emotion in each note. More expression than 100 metal solos. Who is that guitarists name? I'd sure love to hear more of his work , in whatever other bands he was in
+decimated550 Warren Zevon - vocals, guitars, piano; Randy Brown - guitar, vocals; Joe Daniels - drums; Larry Larson - bass; John Wood - lead guitar, vocals I agree, great musicianship
I always thought this song was funny, i always liked its tongue in cheek approach to a tragedy and sort of challenges peoples views. I dont think people really knew how to respond to it when it first came out, lol
Warren was my friend and I miss him dearly. We shared many personal moment including a shared appreciation for the novels of Tom McGuane.
I'm sorry for your loss. He was a favorite musician but can not say that I know him as a man. Blessings and peace darling
You were a lucky man then Harry, I’m sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry Harry. Cherish those moments. He was one of the good ones for sure.
He will be forever missed.

What makes you believe he's underrated? Did you travel the globe taking a survey from every citizen of the world? Please explain.
I am grateful that my father blasted this on vinyl as we were growing up. Thank you Warren.
I'm just starting to get into Warren Zevon's music, and I am absolutely loving it. Better late than never. RIP Mr. Zevon, and thank you.
You could do worse.
Same here! He's so different than what I'd pictured all these years. He ROCKS.
Check out the album Life'll Kill Ya. Not a weak link.
Rock and roll my friends
Couldn't get any better,,,how many times did he play on David letterman when Paul Schafer was on vacation,,, like 30 times,,,,,I guess,,, cheers,,,
Never had a problem getting great musicians to back him. He was held in great regard. Eternal peace Warren.
guitarist here, unsung hero; to me he sounds like the end of a 70s classic rock moment, very fluid.
yes , who is that kid, he is great!

He nearly makes up for not have a sax for this

Great music is TIMELESS.
Warren would LOVE hearing that👍

Zevon was a master. I love songs rich with irony and sarcasm behind comically simple refrains.
I’m an old white guy and I find this music to be infectious.
That guitar solo was really unbelievable
It had me floored!

Even with the bizarre lyrics this one of my all-time favorite songs. This live version is absolutely fantastic!!
The best thing about Zevon's music are the lyrics

Musician, maybe?
But horrible songwriter.
Similar thoughts for Meatloaf, The Moody Blues. waited I believe until 2018.
maybe this year, maybe 2023 is it.
His guitarist is just on fire!
