The De Ville was the first automatic watch that I was amazed by. I went into an Omega boutique a while back and it stood out from every watch I saw that day in a mall full of watch stores. My wife was gonna by it for me on the spot as my 40th was approaching (God bless her) but I stopped her because I can’t spend that much money on myself. Shortly thereafter our daughter was born -a million times more valuable than the watch!
Actually great information for everyone who doesn't care what other people think but is on the lookout for a high quality watch for an affordable price. Keep those hidden sleepers coming, please.
The first watch I ever purchased was an Omega DeVille Quartz back in 1985. I was 16 years old and saved up my money from my after school job to buy it. I took it into a watchmaker recently and got it running for the first time in 30 years. Unfortunately its tiny at 28mm and looks like a ladies watch these days, but I still love it! Thanks for giving these watches some love!
I remember just as I was getting into watches (not on a serious level yet though) when I was about 15, a relative who has since passed away had an Omega Deville, not sure which model or reference it was but it was one of the square ones, I noticed he had an Omega which is something I never noticed before I got Into watches, and I asked him to see it, so he took it off and let me look at it, and one of the first things I noticed was the embossed city deville logo on the case back and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, right now I'm trying to find the exact one he had and get it for myself. That's when my love for watches went up a level.
I have owned many watches over the years and use to be quite a collector. The fact that the De Ville line doesn't "sell" well has nothing to do with "following the crowd" as some commenters claim. And it is really not a "movement" thing either...the same coaxial movement can be found in the Seamster, Planet Ocean, and Aqua Terra lines that do sell better. The real reason(s) as I see it are: The De Ville line is not Omega's "iconic" line - that belongs to the Seamaster and Speedy...always will...they will always drastically outsell all other models; The De Ville is a dress watch and people really don't dress up as much as they use to...it is very hard to "dress" a De Ville down..you can wear other models with anything from jeans to khakis to suits; Omega puts ZERO advertising in that product line...when they do pay for advertisement drops including movies and TV it's always from the Seamster or Speedy line; Resale values are HORRIBLE...I have bought and sold several Omegas in my lifetime and I have always taken a bath...the De Ville being the worst offender (speedy moonwatch holding the best). Everyone in the watch community knows this...never by a De Ville new, find a used one with box and papers for 50% off retail or more (for all the Rolex haters try doing that with Rolex...a stainless steel Sub or GMT is like a wearable savings account)
I bought my “red panda” Deville chronoschope chronograph new in 2007 because I needed a watch and fell in love with it at first sight. It was my only watch for many years, and I took this dress watch backpacking, scrambling over boulders in Joshua tree, to the beach, in the ocean many times, etc., and after a regular servicing it is just as amazing today as it was 12 years ago. Love it. Always wondered why it wasn’t more popular, especially given the lack of red-faced chronographs out there.
My first Omega was a vintage Deville 1332 my wife gave me for a birthday present. For me it's been a wonderful watch. Dependable, accurate and excepted great compliments due to its appearance. It was a gateway to my current collection.
The Omega deVille Prestige is one of my favorite watch lines. I own two models, one pre-coaxial and the other with the 2500 movement, which features a coaxial escapement. The dial designs of a few years ago look better than the current ones, and the Omega ladies’ watch designs are more compelling than the men’s ... but that’s my personal opinion. One big plus to the modern Prestige line is the availability of watches in several different sizes.
I have a 1960 Seamaster Deville, identical to the first watch in the video. I remember the day my dad brought it home. Thank you for showcasing the line.
When you discover the beauty and quality in watches lesser known or ignored your taste and knowledge of watches has grown out of the status quo realm. A very enjoyable place and also frustrating place to be in.
Love the Chrono and some of the other dial combos. Again Omega continues to offer so much for the price. So you can get the sapphire case for the price of a Datejust. That’s an easy choice.
Really like the DeDille line, but for me, the Omega watches I generally want are their vintage pieces (50s-80s), and there are plenty of awesome DeVilles to be had!
I had no idea about these watches and this is the exact reason I watch your videos. I think the majority of watch enthusiasts have their icons, their "go to watches" for each brand. When it comes to Omega, the Speedmaster is the King and I think people who buy such watches also like the recognition from other watch enthusiasts. If I was to choose between a Speedy and a De Ville Chrono (Although this De Ville Chrono is absolutely superb! And there are numerous nice versions of it), I would go for the Speedy all day. It carries more history and appreciation. I love learning about watches and thank you for sharing your knowledge!
What Beauties! It nice to know there is quality out there at a respectable price. Rolex just isn't doing it for me in my old age. Great video and thanks for sharing.
I like a few of the Tresor offerings. Probably among my favorites within the current DeVille lineup. There’s some very nice watches there. At 40mm, they are a bit large for a dress watch let alone a woman’s dress watch. I’ll go back and look closer as their size offerings, it’s been awhile. They offer the Aqua Terra in 38.5mm, there’s got to be something similar within DeVille. There’s also the Globemaster, another Constellation sub group that’s very much overlooked. The Globemaster, that’s one they could or should take a risk and develop further. It’s more on the margins of dress and sports watch, completely versatile and a real stunner. The 41mm annual calendar is one I’m warming up to quite a bit and a truly interesting complication at a reasonable price. The Globemaster should be in the discussion.
Kudos to omega for not sacrificing quality but only improving, over time their brand value will elevate. Deville dials are antiquated like Breguet styling
I bought the Hour Vision with the silver dial in 2012 (wearing it now!). I have small wrists, but the curved lugs help a lot. I believe they discontinued the original silver dial in 2017. I really like it.
I got a 70 or 71 Deville, gold plated, 35mm in decent condition. About the time when Deville became its own line. It is powered by the Omega 1002 movement and it keeps decent time for an almost 50 years old timepiece. Paid $280 shipped from Japan. It is my "dress" watch...
John P, I like these and they are gorgeous in my opinion! I like sport and luxury dress watches. I agree, The De Ville Chronograph is a high quality and to me a beautiful piece. However, That’s why we have so many Choices from every manufacturer to please every taste. I didn’t know this one existed. Several you showed I didn’t know existed. Thank You for taking the time to review these.
OMG...careful sonnyboy! For us older gents "This retired cougar actor lady" was super-hot, smart and a humanitarian and will always be super-hot! You had me riveted to your every word and then threw it all away. lol
Just to correct some info, the good movements are started in DeVille line first then distributed through sport lines.. i was thinking they have better movements but omega recently put these movements in most of their production line. Good video 👍🏼 keep up !
The Omega De Ville and Constellation are actually very popular in China. Omega De Ville is actually the most searched for watch model in China (source: Forbes article). China is definitely driving the De Ville sales as sports watches aren't that popular yet.
I really haven't paid attention to DeVille because I am not into dress watch...but I will definitely give them a second look, especially the chrono - Thank you John :)
Hi John, the 9300 movement is also available in the speedmaster and planet ocean lines. So I don't think that there are specific movements dedicated to the Deville line.
I love the Omega Deville annual calendar in blue. I'd never heard about the Deville chrono and as you say it' a great movement for a great price. The central Tourbillon is boss!! Grebuel Forsey does the sapphire crystal on the sides but that'll cost ya! Again never heard of these watches, including the ones with the crystal on the sides. I would say bad marketing on Omega's part. They focus on their sports models. Thanks for putting all the various deville models on my radar, again I blame Omega's marketing.
I like my dress watches. But I wasn't aware of their chronograph or the hour vision. That really blew me away. Speaking of linen dials, the new Tresor with the Blue linen dial would have been great to see instead of the ladies version of the Tresor. In fact, I think they used a Tresor as the first co-axial watch because they are all hand wound. I wish they would make the Tresor in a 37 or 38mm version. I would really like to own one for the Daniels inspired movement.
I own a De Ville rattrapante calibre 3612. It has a co axial escapement double column wheel. Absolutely love it. Bought it unworn for just below 5k. That is Totally ridiculous in my opinion.
Yes, I do know about the De Ville line. No, they don’t sell well. Why? Because they aren’t marketed properly, they’re dressier in style and despite being fine watches they are over priced at retail for what the market wants and will accept. I understood that Omega now has the 8000 series calibers in all of their watches. I also understood that the 1st watch to come out with this series of Co-axial was the Globemaster. There were 2000 and some 3000 series caliber, too, but the real deal movement wise is the 8000 series found in the Seamaster, AT and some De Ville line models.
I'm pretty sure James Murray from "Impractical Jokers" has a black & silver dial Hour Vision. I keep staring at it every time I watch the show. Next time I'm in an Omega boutique I'll have to take a look at the DeVille line.
I'm seriously considering an Omega De Ville Prestige, the AD in my country sells it with a 25% discount, so basically I can get a brand new Omega for almost pre owned price
No one's buying them now because it's not the trend and people are wired to be short sighted and follow others... mirror neurons, group think, Maslow's hierarchy Etc. Etc. Etc.. Unless it's Rolex or Patek, people can't see value because all they hear UA-camrs & bloggers talk about is value retention and selling for higher than list... Pepsi, Batman, Sub, Royal Oak, Nautilus... Very unrealistic expectations and like all trends, it will eventually slow down and people will shift towards something else that begins as a value proposition and turns into the next groupthink excercise; the fun part is trying to figure that out before others' figure it out on mass.
Same as Iphone users who wpuld buy a worse phone just for the hype,or the hype shoe guys, who buy canvas shoes like balenciaga or yeezy that cost like they are leather, there is a lot of sheep in the world who just follow the masses, sry for my bad english...
@@luka.. For what it's worth, that's a lot of languages to know! Also, just for your information, the expression isn't "on mass", rather "en masse" which is a French expression.
So glad you brought this line from Omega to our attention. You are 100% right about them being overlooked. I'd only looked at the older Seamaster DeVille's before now. There is a Rattapante Chronograph, new for $6,800! What? Crazy low prices. I'm one of those guys that get's excited about movements so to see so many great movements in this line-up is fantastic.
Thanks for the great vid John P. Definitely amazing value prop that not many know about as Omega just doesn't know how to market their brand - an UNlimited edition 50th anniversary speedy 321 original subdial design AND HESALITE would have smashed sales in 2019...but instead they come out with unaffordable precious metal editions or the "limited" to 6969-production steel with a ridiculous/useless 9 o'clock subdial and a charmless footprint caseback! RARRGH!!! No wonder Omega will always play 2nd fiddle and remain the 'poor-man's Rolex'! (rant over)
There's a herd mentality in the watch community which leaves some brands and collections sidelined. This is fine by me as I have a thing for the unloved and quirky when it comes to watches.
Great video! The reason why dress watches our on the decline is that era is over in the work place. The people who would buy those are retired and it reminds them of work.
From your website I like these: Breguet Marine though I don't really like their case design. The dial is nice. The Cuervos are always good. The Gerald Genta is very cool and I've been eye them but not that colour. Breguet tradition is my kinda flavour. Vulcain Nautical is nice. About your content..you're the master of the ship. Don't let viewers dictate what to talk about but take suggestions and I suggest talking about a wider range of watches plus throw in interesting history like the Urban Gentry. He talks about interesting watches and doesn't have topics like "This watch will make you look richer". It doesn't sound good. He'll instead say, this watch punches higher than it cost, which sounds better than talking about someone's finances. I'm just to the point when I speak as you will notice. Watches are not just about money on the wrist. Dive into older vintage ones from the 50s-60s which isn't showing off your bank account pieces but age they gracefully and look good.
Honestly I LOVE that line too! Just the problem is financially can't afford them right now XD Would definitely consider buying used in the future in like 2-3 years. Got to get through med school first XD And right now for one of my first lux watch that's a bit dressy is the GS Snowflake Spring drive just because I find the technology fascinating and I love the dial. However, down the line it would be nice to get a preowned or if I feel lucky maybe get a good deal at an AD?
I will admit to trying on a De Ville watch at an AD. At the time I had no idea that the movement was anything special and the salesperson focussed only on the fit and Omega brand status. Just another pricey fashion watch I thought.
I’ve found this line is popular in Asia. Especially Gold coloured models. I include Chinese in this enthusiasm. Funny really, before spending much time In Asia I was not interested in bicoloured and gold watches. Now, It would be my preferred option.
Hi John, nice to see you unearth these hidden gems, I was looking at the prices of the omega hour vision $2650.00 for a white dial on a steel bracelet but $4230.00 for a blue dial and leather strap which is the one I was after, I just don't understand the price difference surely not $1500.00 for a blue dial and a leather strap. I live in the UK and these watches were UK based.???
It does seem that Omega produces too many watches. They definitely should add some focus to their lineup. There are also so many options. I do like the look of some of the Deville's . What do you think of the Tudor Glamour Double Date lineup? They have in house movements, and similar looks. I would lean toward these watches versus the Deville's, but love your thoughts.
Thanks for the information John, those sleepers are very interesting. And guess what, the less price retention they have, the better for us, watch lovers ;)
I own an Omega de Ville and they are great watches. I have also seen the Chronograph in person and its a beautiful watch. People should be buying them there is no reason not to.
Was it the boutique in Aventura that you visited to see the watch? I was aware of the De Ville line. I really like the one that resembles the JLC sector dial Master Control. The model with the sides of case made of sapphire is news to me so now I have something else to research and add to my want list. Thanks a lot John. 😑
I stumbled across the DeVille Chrono on the Omega site, and I love it! Although I haven't yet seen a real one I have added it to my wish list. Thanks for the great review.
Another great video John. They certainly make some great looking watches. I’m sure it’s all about buying it either used or well below ticket price. I’ve always thought they arguably made better movements than Rolex and some others.
I tend to forget Omega as other collections outside from the Speedmaster, Planet Ocean, and Seamaster. My guess is dive watches are and will always remain hot. I myself have more dive watches than any other type of watch even though I don't dive I can't even swim. And who wouldn't want a watch that can go deeper than the human body can handle or have a watch that's been into space? Not to mention this yr marks the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing. I think its only a matter of time before Omega and a few other companies drop their entire dress line of watches (unless your name is Patek, GS or Rolex) for more robust rugged watches. Now I'm not saying dress watches should be obsolete but what I am saying is those companies that make them and are not selling why continue? I get it not everyone wants and or cares how deep their watch can go underwater or how long its been in space but those that do are usually the ones that come back. Now I don't own an Omega their just too expensive for me at the moment but here's my advice for Omega either A) Get rid of the Deville Line in general or B) Cut it down to fewer models.
Hey JP, I'd love to get your opinion on the new Seiko Alpinist special edition release. That and your opinions on Seiko's ever growing number of special editions in general. Do you agree with the number of ranges they have released, do you agree with all of these "limited edition" releases. Would love to see a video man, love your channel, keep it up.
Hey there, I had opportunity to purchase them and did not. It was in my cart and then I said “why would I pay 500 for a 100 watch ? “ cool watches but not for me. Can’t understand who is buying them for over $1000 second hand.
@@JohnPWatches I totally agree with you, but also if you're Seiko, why the hell team up with Hodinkee to release an affordable limited edition?? They totally have the capital too go at that on their own, and not have to share they're profits with Hodinkee. They've made a huge mistake limiting this blue Alpinist. There's alot of disappointed Seiko fans out there. Thanks for the reply JP.
Interesting vid. But the 40mm Tresor is not a “ladies” watch. It is a 100% men’s watch and happens to sell very well. It comes in several different metals and starts at $6500 for the stainless steel and goes up from there.
Interesting, I have seen the watches several times but I didn't like them especially the dial even though I'm a dress watch guy. I felt like if i bought them it would be just because they are omega. nothing on my mind right now but for that money I would go for a nomos orion or maybe save some money and get maurice lacroix les classiques date. i would love to have a tresor but they are too big and expensive
For Omega dress watches, I like the Tresor and the Globemaster. I've heard the Deville's do better in Asian markets. The Tresor could do better if they had steel options I feel, because the manual wind really does help the watch be comparatively slim. Omega is a victim of their own success in this regard. Pushing the spy and astronaut pieces so well, that's all anyone considers, which is a shame.
I don't like the new Omega's but they do have a lot of vintage watches I do like. I keep hearing Omegas are very hard to sell because they lose value so fast, even more than a car. Which could mean a good deal in the used market. I like the older Seamaster when they were 40 mill , the 42 is just too big for my wrist and looks silly on me. John, do you collect Omega Vintage? I know you have vintage watches. I don't know anyone who has one of these watches and never seen a deville in person.

Do the video on JLC history! I'm still curious about the difference/reasons JLC split their brand to leCoultre for the US market!
Vintage Omegas in general and especially the Devilles are seriously undervalued

There were 2000 and some 3000 series caliber, too, but the real deal movement wise is the 8000 series found in the Seamaster, AT and some De Ville line models.
Cindy Crawford according to John is a "retired cougar actor lady"
hahahahahaha fucking love it!!
Haha :)
I came so close to buying that Hour Vision. It’s gorgeous
Love omega Deville watches!
I'm pretty sure James Murray from "Impractical Jokers" has a black & silver dial Hour Vision. I keep staring at it every time I watch the show. Next time I'm in an Omega boutique I'll have to take a look at the DeVille line.
Aj ?
@@JohnPWatches I'm not AJ, if that's what you're asking
L bad English is another trend! Only joking, enjoy your watches.
Canada_watch make money in stocks and shares by being ahead of the game, then wear your winnings on your wrist!
@@jimflex6341 Hahaha,english is my 5th language ;-)
The Omega 422.53.44.52.13.001 is on my wish list for sure. One day!
I saw the collection at the Omega Boutique at Place Vendome in Paris just amazing collection
I LOvE the DeVille. Always have. Can’t afford it, but love it.
Also, they have the central tourbillon in Naples FL, at their boutique. They said that they were able to sell 1 of them.
And how about that DeVille chronograph rattrapante... I think it’s stunning!
Thanks man, I did not even know these watches even existed !
(rant over)
And get that Hour Vision. It’s on fire 🔥
There's a herd mentality in the watch community which leaves some brands and collections sidelined. This is fine by me as I have a thing for the unloved and quirky when it comes to watches.
I think I heard Tim Mosso say he is in love with the Omega Deville and is the one he would get! On point bro!
The 1960s seamaster de Ville line was fabulous. They should re-introduce them.
Omega forever
Hi John, nice to see you unearth these hidden gems, I was looking at the prices of the omega hour vision $2650.00 for a white dial on a steel bracelet but $4230.00 for a blue dial and leather strap which is the one I was after, I just don't understand the price difference surely not $1500.00 for a blue dial and a leather strap. I live in the UK and these watches were UK based.???
I need look into Omega Deville line. Thanks John.
There is one good Deville worth checking out and that’s Willy Deville “ Hey Joe”... great track 🎸😉
I was sure you were going to talk about the Omega dynamic line
We get these all the time and they sell very well!
Thanks for the information John, those sleepers are very interesting. And guess what, the less price retention they have, the better for us, watch lovers ;)
Great video JohnP. 👌🏼🕵🏼♀️
Great vid 👍 now I’m considering 6 identical Deville’s
It's an excellent collection im on the lookout for an hour vision but unfortunately isnt brought in by our country's distributor.
very cool watch!
I like the current generation of DeVilles. I'm just weird. I prefer Omega to Rolex, and I like dress watches.
I love my De Ville 4614.30.02 with small second and no date.
I stumbled across the DeVille Chrono on the Omega site, and I love it! Although I haven't yet seen a real one I have added it to my wish list. Thanks for the great review.
I agree the hour vision in blue dial is on my short list.
How long is the long short list ? :)
Hi John I nearly bought the devile surefire side cristal case
Is the De Ville line more popular in foreign markets?
Another great video John.
They certainly make some great looking watches. I’m sure it’s all about buying it either used or well below ticket price. I’ve always thought they arguably made better movements than Rolex and some others.
i love rhe constellaion watches.. always have
...also, getting a little lax with the wrist-check aren't we ? ( don't make me put it in parenthesis.) oh, nice shirt.
Definitely. :) thanks!
Dynamic is worth a punt as well
Hey JP, I'd love to get your opinion on the new Seiko Alpinist special edition release.
Well put
Did you eventually buy the watch?
I don't like the new Omega's but they do have a lot of vintage watches I do like. I keep hearing Omegas are very hard to sell because they lose value so fast, even more than a car. Which could mean a good deal in the used market. I like the older Seamaster when they were 40 mill , the 42 is just too big for my wrist and looks silly on me. John, do you collect Omega Vintage? I know you have vintage watches. I don't know anyone who has one of these watches and never seen a deville in person.
Yes good value preowned- I have a vintage 1970 speedmaster I wear a lot :)
