The problem is relatively wealthy people who know absolutely nothing about watches only wear a Rolex. They think it’s the only luxury watch brand in the planet. For this reason, Rolexes can appear unsophisticated. For those people, there isn’t such a thing as a Rolex alternative.
For me personally, the alternative for Sky Dweller is Glashutte Original Senator Cosmopolite eventhough it doesn't have similar looks. It's not only have a function of GMT but also worldtimer with the options of :15, :30, :45 minutes which Sky Dweller doesn't have.
I would much sooner have a Grand Seiko than a Rolex. Beside most luxury Swiss brands the GS looks like such a good value proposition, particularly when purchased as a second hand watch.
GS certainly produces great watches, though if you ever wanted to sell it, I can say first hand, they move pretty slow unless you have whichever hot GS watch is in demand- such as snowflake.
@@JohnPWatches I completely agree. That is why I would certainly favor a secondhand example. The build quality and frightening depreciation combine to make a winning combination for anyone looking for a true luxury watch on the budget of a moderately expensive mid-tier piece.
A Grand Seiko is still a Seiko. They are good watches with great technology but when I think about a luxury time piece with great traditional horological significance, Seiko doesnt come to mind. I think about my Seiko when I want to jump in the pool, go to the beach or wrench on my car. I own a SKX. I dont see myself spending thousands on a Seiko, no matter how "Grand" it is. And yes I know about the significance of the Spring drive technology...

Great content John. My GMT of choice is the Glycine Airman Base 22. Love it. My chronograph of choice is the Omega Speedmaster Pro and my diver of choice, still to be acquired, is in fact a Rolex Submariner no date. For now my Seiko SKX will have to do. ☺️
Regarding the IWC Ingenieur. IWC released this version as a tribute to their original 1955 model not necessarily to compete with the Date Just, which I agree it does. It also had IWC's first bidirectional automatic movement and was their first anti-magnetic watch.

My alternative was an Omega 2254.50. It’s been treating me more than well :D Years went by and I started looking at the Rolex Daytona’s. Crazy pricing steered me away. Hi John. Very interesting video here. Talking about Zenith, it is general conviction as you said, that El Primero movement has a low reliability mainly due to the hi-beat and the wear that comes with that. I know from a past video (can't remember if yours or Federico's) that Hans is a great fan of El Primero, and due to the fact that he is a watchmaker, I'd really like to have his opinion, as a watchmaker on this. A video of him talking about technical aspect of the El Primero movement would be great! Too many times it's heard "this is better that that..." "that one is not so good..." but very few times someone can debate with facts what he's saying. This is what I'd really love to see is further video: a technical discussion on the El Primero movement, view from a watchmaker eye: what's good and what's not so good. Thank you!
Agree with you on the Rolex Sky dweller the closest I can think of is an annual calendar of some some sort. Something from Glashutte Original maybe? In an annual calendar but I can't think of a annual calendar + GMT. That said the Sky Dweller is probably my favorite new rolex.
Thanks Bryan! Honestly know little about it besides 14k and vintage. Whenever a jeweler friend gets these cool vintage yet plausibly modern pieces in I jump on them.
I'd probably go for a GS Snowflake or similar over the Datejust. Definitely a Seamaster instead of a Submariner, and maybe a Navitimer vs the Daytona (though for what a stainless steel Daytona costs, there are any number of choices with far better movements). As for the Skydweller, I'd trade the annual calendar for a standard date but add a 24 hour bezel to effectively get a third time zone which opens up any number of watches.
Thnx for the vid. One thing, I’m an old fashioned guy, I would suggest, show some style if you’re talking high end watches in a public video... and take of your cap ;o).
Why does it have to be a Rolex alternative? Why not just a better watch for the money which is just right. Omega seamaster over the Submariner, Grand Seiko or Omega Aqua Terra over the Date just and most Jaeger lecoultre over everything else.
That’s the problem with the whole premise of this video. I would never buy a modern Rolex so why would I want another brand that reminds me of a Rolex.
I love the look of the Seamaster but you need to either go with the current Seamaster or a Planet Ocean to compete in movements with the Submariner. The Co-axial 2500 just doesn't cut it. Also, I prefer the Railmaster Denim to the Explorer or any of the Oyster Perpetual.
Well, it`s easy for me. I don`t like, that people assume, that I`m wealthy or a fraud. And, since, I`m mostly talking to people, who share similar values, it may come across as "in your face - I have something to prove". Alpha M is a joke!
What a sellout... if anyone had doubts that vid and his follow up interview w/ Teddy B made it crystal clear.
All the comments on how the Rolex Skydweller has no alternative because of its unique complication... 😆 You guys realize they licensed it from Michael Vogt, right? The Vogard TimeZoner did it first, and much better!
The new Daytona is not as nice as the Paul Newmann. I would go with Steinhart. Ocean one vintage is a wonderful homage.
I wear a leather jacket and my Sub to black tie events.
On top of a tuxedo?
I have longines conquest vhp gmt, annual calender gmt. i think it punches rolex in the balls in many ways. datejust with cyclope thats unique
I have one, too. Killer GMT function and a real beauty in white dial
Nothing touches the Sky Dweller. Rolex needs to make it available on stainless steel.
LOL. The only reason to not want a Rolex is the price.
Zenith EP is the grail of Chrono not a Daytona. Rolex copied Zenith movement and modified the movement to hide the embarrassment
haha interesting perspective, I like it :)
More!
Some UA-camr who wears overly tight suits has 5 reasons why...
Hey JP, where are your specs?! I subscribed partly because I think you're as cute as button, especially with the specs! 😁😁😁
Thanks for this. It seems every watch channel is Rolex Rolex Rolex or $300 watches. Also, Ive checked out delray...one want for the site would be for better indication of condition. At least for me, buying online a distinction between mint, near mint, excellent, fair etc is helpful before putting down money.
Thanks james ! We have different conditions but perhaps we could have clearer definitions or a legend soon. Thanks again cheers!
@@ElijsDima there's nothing wrong with a watch of any price... It's just that watch channels seem to be excited over Rolex and super expensive pieces and then speak about the sub 1000 dollar watches as "good alternatives" to Daniel wellington or mvmt. The non Rolex or sub 5k watches are described as "entry level" or sub alternatives... Id like more channels who treat the watches as good on their own merits
