In 1988, I started following Phil because I worked for a company that supplied Crown and Fast Fare C-stores. This was obviously Phil's best year on the circuit but what I've never understood was, why Phil and Harry Gant's teams were virtually swapped after this year. In 88, with Leo Jackson as engine builder and crew chief, Phil finished 3rd at Daytona, won Talladega, another 3rd at Daytona in July and ended up 8th in the points for the year. Then in 89, they flip teams with Richard Jackson taking over the 55 team and Leo going to the 33. Go take a look at Phil's results and Harry's results during that year, almost identical from the previous year. Phil basically got the shaft in my opinion and he's career never recovered. A class guy who could have been really good, if in the right situation.

Totally agree! It's not as exciting today (IMO) for several reasons. The driver's back then were Hero's in people's eyes, brave Men who risked they're very lives just crawling into one of those beast's. In today's Stockcar, it's almost impossible to be killed or even injured in these car's. Competition is the Heart of Stockcar Racing, but Danger is it's SOUL, cut out the Danger & you've cut out it's Soul. 🤷🏻♂️
Had to revisit this race after listening to the Dale Jr Download!! Always been a fan of Leo & Richard Jackson’s racing teams!! Phil really drove the wheels off this car!!

Yes Sir, Ol' Benny's little brother done damn good that day didn't he! I watched this live on tv that day & like 99% of the fans, I was really rootin for Bobby Allison (even though I bleed Petty Blue) I felt bad for poor Phil Parsons, because if he had beaten any driver not named Allison, it would have been the feel good story of that season, but instead he went and beat the guy everybody at Talladega & in the entire State of Alabama was pullin for! 😖!! Oh well, great job by BP's baby brother anyway 💪
It just seems so irresponsible now due to just how far we've learned and come with safety. But those guys were tough and Lord knows what effects they lived with and nobody ever knew.
3:24:57 = What a wild finish!! Going from 3 Cars with a chance with 3 to go to 5 with 2 to go. Phil drove with his head those last 15 laps. Ok, he was damn lucky too, Bobby, Geoff, Ken, and Terry were all race winners so to beat them straight up at Dega, and to do it clean, GOOD JOB PHIL PARSONS!!
The AJ Foyt comes during the last caution flag, and at the last minute of the boardcast they say AJ in trouble again, yup! But they dont show the 3 black flags and the troubles with the officials, that sucked they missed it.
I really like Gary Nelson on the '88 broadcasts. I know BP took his place later and BP is also awesome, but Gary had a perspective that we didn't get again until Larry Mac entered the booth.
Gary was a treasure trove of good, relevant information. Unfortunately, he didn't have a whole lot of charisma lol. BP breathed new life into the booth and the rest is history
@@SMIFFTV Thanks for the reply. I was actually surprised by how good Gary was on tv, charisma included. Lake Speed, too, on the ones he's on. It's hard comparing anyone to BP though, a better comparison is Jerry Gaffens or Sam Posey from some of your others in this era lol, just brutal. Gary went back to crew chiefing after this anyway, I think it worked out for both of them.
One helluva one hit wonder run for Benny's bubba & Bodine's Levi Garrett car was always fast. That was a lot more car than he was a driver, Dale Earnhardt shoulda been in that car for Hendrick, he'd have won all the Winston Cups from 86 to 94...
This was really a time of change for NASCAR. Money and the "corporate image" were clearly taking over but there were still noticeable hints of the then "bygone" era that traced back to the 60s and 70s.

Funny hearing bill say he wouldnt mind the place being turned into a fishing pond, expected that from kyle lol he always said that about darlington lol. But bill actually did good here so idk
I think Dale Earnhardt would have wanted to drive for Hendrick. I think he liked to driving for Childress a whole lot better because Childress knew what it was like being a driver and understood what Earnhardt goes through during the race. Earnhardt had a greater appreciation for Childress. But if things worked out with Earnhardt at Hendrick and Gary Nelson as crew chief, no telling how it would turn out.
