    I went to this race with my late Dad. Sat inbetween turns 1 & 2. Race was great. Boos were loud. Had a perfect seat for seeing that cage rattled. My Dad lived in those townhouses at the golf course that was very close to the track. Had season tickets at Bristol for over a decade but when they put in that progressive banking we thought the change made the racing suck and it wasn't worth paying for 4 seats to all the races, practice and qualifying. Wish it was 1999 again. No 9/11 and wars and my Dad was alive. Miss those days.😢

    Man I still have this race recorded on VHS along with other races of the 90s. It was a great time being a race fan back then. Just look at that crowd! It was like that every weekend. I always wanted to go to Bristol then but never had the chance. You don't see that now. I use to be a season ticket holder to Michgian and it was always sold out as well. I finally attend a Cup race for the first time in 13 years, couple years ago at Charlotte for the Roval and I have to say it definately ain't the same vibe. The crowd then pales to what it is look like today.
    The sport had so much going for it then: the drivers with character, the colors of the cars, & recognizable sponsors. I gotta say though I sure do miss Pontiac! As much as I like the looks of the Monte Carlo, those grand prixs sure looked stout and 'wide trackin' too!

    Part of why I never had a problem with this move in this specific situation was because NASCAR's rules about pitting on the back stretch back then were pure garbage. The only reason Terry was even able to get close to him was because of his tire advantage, an advantage he only had because of the stupid back stretch pitting rules. I know I'm right about this because they got rid of those stupid rules a long time ago. They were never fair.

      @trent82 11 місяців тому +3

      @@cbrunnem6102 In the days before the longer pit roads that wrap around turns where necessary, they used to have 2 pit lanes at Bristol. Some of the cars would pit on the front stretch and others would pit on the back stretch. If you were pitting under green, then it would essentially work the same as it does now in terms of pit delta. However, if it was under yellow, everybody pitting on the front stretch would have a significant advantage because they would get to finish their pit stops, pull back on to the track and then speed up to catch the pace car, passing everybody pitting on the back stretch in the process. This usually ended up with most, if not all, of the cars pitting on the front stretch getting to restart in front of every lead lap car pitting on the back stretch, regardless of previous running position or the speed of their pit stops.
      Earnhardt got stuck with a back stretch pit box in this race. This meant that if they wanted to pit at the end of the race, they would have probably needed to come out as the last car on the lead lap or close to it with only a few laps remaining on the track with the shortest lap times. They basically had no choice but to stay out. Terry was pitting on the front stretch. There was no downside for him pitting for fresh tires. This is the only reason he got back to the front so quickly. If everybody would have been able to pit for fresh rubber, then even with his fast car that night, he would have never had time to work his way to the front in only a few laps if everyone was on equal tires.
      The rule was always garbage. Simply put...if we had the 2023 pit lane in 1999, Earnhardt would have won anyway, but without the last lap drama.
