Oldsmobiles in the top spots, Pontiacs, leader swapping practically every lap in the beginning. For me, the 80's were the pinnacle of NASCAR.

How was it self inflicted? What was NASCAR supposed to do and not do? The cars look alike because form follows function. It’s time we stop instinctively blaming NASCAR and start looking more credibly at issues

Harold Kinder, the coolest flagman in NASCAR history not afraid of anything. Bobby Allison flew into the fence about 200 feet from him and didn't even flinch. Just going to be waving the flag with a cigarette in my mouth with cars going 200-205 MPH below me.

Richard Petty still competitive here, and especially in '87. This is the golden age of Nascar for me, I started watching a year before I believe, when they showed 4-5 races a year on tv. One was the 600 miler I believe, and Waltrip & Elliott I remember were in the pits for a good chunk of the race (they were dueling for the points lead). It's probably on the long list of videos......

It’s s good thing the draft worked this race when it wasn’t that effective the previous three Daytona-Talladega races; there wasn’t much passing those first three. The disappearance of the draft after 1984 was the unsung big story of those times - without it passing was simply too damned hard

Has a few things working against it--mid-80s camera tech, satellite uplink, downlink to a big dish in the yard (or at a broadcast facility), slow speed analog tape recording. Tape stored for many years before getting digitized for UA-cam. Quality lost at each step. Kudos to SMIFFTV for making the effort to bring this to us.

A big part of the problem is it came from a VHS tape. TV broadcast wasn't bad, but recording TV broadcasts onto VHS tape was a big dip in quality.
