Ford F150: "Check Fuel Fill Inlet" Message On Dash

  • In this video, I have a look at a 2010 Ford F150 that has a message on the instrument cluster saying, "check fuel fill inlet." A.K.A., the gas cap on this capless system. It also has the engine light on with a P0457 (EVAP Gross leak) code stored in it. Before you go throwing a smoke machine on it, make sure and have a look at the purge solenoid. -Enjoy!

With all these newer vehicles going to these "capless" systems, it's great to see a video about how a purge solenoid can be there real problem versus going on a wild goose chase looking back at the tank/filler neck. Great video.

Very informative as usual. That said, this is the kind of video where you (Eric) employ reasoning and technique involving several parts of a system that may be slightly mysterious to viewers, in which a quick white-board-of-knowledge would double the interest and education. I for one have not been entirely clear on how the gas tank, evap canister, the purge valve and intake manifold relate, and what part does what during what phase of operation. And how that does or doesn't relate to systems that seem to have a dedicated vacuum pump to test gas tank leaks.

I wonder if the o2 sensor code pops up because you just forced those fuel gases into the intake without the truck doing it itself. I wonder if it starts a sequence when it uses the evap system where it knows afr eill go to crap so ignore the sensor until it's done with the test. By doing it manually you're probably testing the solenoid itself and not commanding a check thus the truck reading rich rather than normal 14.7:1 or whatever it is for that truck on idle. Regardless, great video!! I like how people like you explain things so we can save time and money chasing gremlings! Keep it up bro!!!! Watching from PR!!!

another thing that can cause the evap code is a dirty seal in the capless fuel fill neck. i have had this happen on my 13 explorer and my 2010 f150. used the out of gas adapter and WD-40 to clean and refresh the seal. the explorer required the use of a rag as well which is pretty difficult to do but it beats replacing the fill neck.

@@Sheeeeeeeeeeeeiiitt cleared the codes and waited to see if it set codes again. you really have to jam the fuel funnel in there like 90 times after spraying the WD-40 a bunch in-between thrusts. Hey Eric -- quick question. At the beginning of the vid, when you commanded the purge solenoid on (with the scan tool) and did not see a corresponding reduction in tank pressure, you concluded that either the scan tool was not working, the vacuum line was plugged or the the purge solenoid was bad. Couldn't a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor also cause the symptoms you were seeing? What allows you to rule that out right away? Thanks again for your channel, Eric. Best one on YT bar none!!!
