    It is amazing how long Ford let this simple problem remain without a redesign. I went a slightly different direction with my fix but conceptually the same. Great video.

    As a former technician and owner of a 2012 F150, I will vouch for this video. My fuel door hinge came apart in 2016. I performed the exact modification shown in this video. Eight years later, the fuel door still opens and closes smoothly.
    Only thing I did different is I bought a new door mechanism and modified the hinge. When I took mine apart, the spring was nowhere to be found.

    Gidday from New Zealand. I have just done this fix after watching your video. Took me about 20 mins once I managed to squeeze my arm in there.... Thank you for making it simple and explaining it nice and clearly. Job done!!

    I had fender liners. I loosened one screw on the fender liner near the fuel neck line just so would not catch my arm. I found I could reach up and push the two bottom clips which aided me in being able to push the other top clip he mentioned. I used a stubby flat screw driver to aid me in pushing the top clip down as I was at the maximum my arm and fingers could reach. The stubby just gave me the extra little bit of pressure needed on that one clip. Everything worked exactly as he described and I’m definitely glad I found his video this is the right video to watch as he said in the beginning. I used more tape as I think I need more coverage than he did but that’s personal preference.

    This was a tremendous help. I just fixed my fuel door. The only suggest is that can slide the decorative door off if you pry the tab on the inside up.

    My f150 has an inner wheel liner. There is no reaching up from behind without removing it. I removed painted door and a little tape around the paint. Slide in flat screw driver at 2 and 4 o'clock and pop out the assembly.

    Thank you for this video, it was extremely helpful. I found out something by accident that could help prevent scratching or bending the door during this repair. I was cleaning the inside of the fuel bay and accidentally popped the door off the Spring assembly. When I looked closely I hadn’t broken the very small tab inside. So to fix, I lined it up and slid the door toward the truck and it stays in place, so it was an easy fix, thank goodness. If I ever have a problem with the Spring assembly, I know what to do. Thanks again!

    I did find value in this tutorial, but was unable to contortion my arm around behind the panel to reach the release tabs on the fuel door assembly to release them. I gave it a good try for around 25 minutes, and after scratching my arm all up (yes I was wearing long sleeves) I gave up.
    I have the standard lift and standard sized tires on my 2011 F150 XLT.
    From a different youtube video I found I went with the 90º pick tool from the front. Using the pick tool and a nylon bicycle tire lever, I was able to loosen the tabs and move forward with the replacement process. I will keep the original and implement your technique with the drill and screw as a back up.

    Ok if anyone owns a 2019 you can’t snap off the plastic gas cover. That’s ok cause the 2019 doesn’t have bolts to remove. You will have to push in all the clips holding the housing. And as they unsnap when your maneuvering the housing off you will also need to help the rubber seal around the gas opening off.

    Pop the metal door off the plastic. Then it's out of the way and you have more room to work. It just slides on past a detent in the plastic. Gentle prying with a credit card gets it off.

    Well done, great video, great fix and explanation, and very helpful. I have a helpful addition and a question i hope you reply too. I have had this problem for awhile but I looked up info because i just got a evap code P0456. Your fix is great but what size screw did you use? 440 is the type of steel and stainless is smart but i am worried about using too small so fix not permanent or too big and damaging plastic. Washer, plastic cement, glue, epoxy, etc aside i and others would benefit from the exact screw size used. As a contractor i work more with wood so 1/16 doesn't tell me the right screw. Love blue tape and it should be used like you did in addition to the info to follow, as one comment pointed out removing the door cover from the assembly will add easy security to help prevent damage. especially if you can not reach all 4 tabs. On the inside of the door cover and the black plastic of the assembly/hing attached to the door cover there is a U shaped cut. Visible in the video and just under the finger open loop towards the rear of truck or opening side of door, not hing side. This is a reverse hold clip. Putting a flat head screwdriver or anything thin and hard inside the bottom of the U with slight outward/towards you/away from door cover pressure will release the cover so the metal part is completely removed giving you more room. It will easily be put back in place by lining up the four plastic tabs in the free space and sliding towards the truck til it clicks to engage the reverse tab. As mentioned by an accident in a comment but to give helpful clarity. I do not usually comment on videos but i thought the addition would be helpful for you or readers and I would appreciate the size and length or any information about the screw i should use as i will be fixing this issue as i address my problem. Thank you in advance.

    • @diymyestate
      @diymyestate  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for your comment and additional information. I'm not sure if this helps but I used a stainless-steel sheet metal screw just slightly larger in diameter of the drill bit (1/16"). Overall length was 1/4". I purchased the screw from a local marine dealer. It was going to be used to mount a clam shell on a boat I was working on. (The clam shell is used to prevent water from coming into the boat and makes for a clean finish). As far as the type of glue I would use. I prefer to use a non-expanding crazy glue type made by Loctite. It comes in a small blue and white bottle (purchased at Lowes) and is more like a gel and not a water type consistency. I would make sure everything dries completely before re-installing to make sure the door operates correctly. It's been about 3 months and I had no issues. If I can be of any assistance or if you need any other information, feel free to reach out to me.
      Thanks again.

    A couple things……… first, I would have remove the body colored door cover, which makes the whole removal and installation super easy. It takes three seconds or second, I couldn’t get my Popeye forearms close enough using the wheel well access method, so I took plastic, trim tools, and Fridays away from the front, if you’re careful, you will not scratch the paint. Once you get one loose, you can just run it around the inside opening like removing a tire from a rim, easy, Peezy I spent 11 bucks on Amazon to buy a stainless steel hinge pin with a threaded cap at the bottom, but since I have already put it back together, I’m gonna wait to replace it the next time it breaks.
