  • YES! The crank pulley grenaded and left me stranded. It was a quick fix but it came with a stroke of good luck. No parts stores or Dealers had the pulley in stock so my only option was another used one. I got lucky and got one off a bone yard Protege....4 Bone yards....one car. The failure of these pulleys is characterized by what appears to be harmless belt squeal....but beware, your pulley may be about to fail!

Crazy, I'd love to see a fluid filled damper offered for these cars like Honda and Subaru engines

You know...I called FLUIDAMPR to see if they made a pulley for the Protege....they make them for the B series engines that fit Miatas. They said the cost plus R&D would be too high for a pulley that may not sell. Apparently the Miata is WAY more popular than the Protege.....which sucks because this little 4 door sedan has so much potential.

Yes, there is a problem with Mazda Protege pulley and alternator belt because, in my opinion, they have a bad design ( in fact, Mazda brand have a Service Bulletin ). I recommend you to use Dayco parts.

Wow! This is exactly, but exactly what happened to me half a year ago with my mazda 626 engine.. ( fs ) I had a problem for several months with noises and vibrations, and every time I tried to glue the halves with epoxy. (It didn't work 🤣). The reason I tried to fix it is because I couldn't find a new one anywhere. And not even a used one. There was one day when I took my sister and there were horrible noises from the engine area. (It sounded like I trapped someone in an engine compartment and the only way for him to get out was with a hammer..) I pulled over because the engine shut down (because of the wheel of the sensor) and I called all the places in the country. In the end I found the place and my mom picked me up and we went to buy a new one and I fixed it in the middle of the road.. (sorry for the long story...)

I had just enough forward rolling momentum to coast behind a shopping center where I left the car!!

    Holly molly!
I'm getting belt noises specially in the morning. The rubber burned smell follows...
    Could it be?
    Ooh Lord.

Damn wish you had a walk through. I forgot to swap my pulleys out on my motor swap. Apparently the JDM FSDE pulley and USDM FSDE are completely different and may ne the reason why the car isn't turning over.

Yeah they are different. But that shouldnt stop the engine from turning over....it should turn over......it just wont fire up and run with the jdm pulley. Just use an impact wrench to take it off and swap the parts.

@RetrocarStyle Whoops, worded it wrong on my end. You're exactly right. It's turning over but isn't firing up. I've just seen videos of people having issues taking it off. Haha, I knew I should've swapped them when I had the motor out. Appreciate your videos and feedback, man!

Whoa! So I’m replacing my pulley right now, and I noticed the teeth freely spin around the wheel, and I’m assuming this is bad, correct?

      YES! Replace immediately!

@@RetrocarStyle oh man this is great info, I’ve replaced the timing belt already and I noticed it going through the cover and now I’m back to square one, and here I was thinking it was a bad tensioner.

So I replaced mine, but it’s vibrating. And I have no idea why.
