- a fellow youtuber Jason, aka 5150mxvw got a lead on a busted up log splitter near him that was for sale cheap and gave me a call, lets see if we can find out why it failed and if we can bring it back to life.

But I guess that Mustie1s neighbour VWnut could use the splitter too (a lot of trees on his property). Out of my experience I can suggest that the splitter should be upgraded with an additional, better splitting wedge (in a T- or even X- design for splitting the wood faster and more often in one turn). I'm sure that Mustie1 is able to fabricate such a helpful, efficient, detachable item.
Do you have trees to cut and split? Respectively do you even have the time to do that besides pushing cars around? 😁😂

I have a similar LS but instead of using the lever control for the hydraulics I replaced it with a Hydraulic Foot Control Valve that has a push up spring plate that auto reverses when your foots removed with a small actuator that is pushed in when the shaft gets to the set stop point this also pushes another actuator on the pedal pushing it in neutral position and vise versa the pedal does it in the opposite direction. This wasn't hard to build. It's so much faster and easier to work with. Just un wine the hoses throw it on the ground and get to work. 😎👍👍👍👍👍

Why not a metal plate to keep the split logs in place, and in this case , does not fall on the gas tank?
@@newandoldtech5634 Commonly done - either a "deck" or shelf to stop those larger logs that split in half from having to be juggled one for each hand.
Do you have a link to the foot pedal you used. Growing up I always had to help my step dad with wood splitting duties and a foot switch would have made it so much easier and freed up my hands.

I split about 5 chords per year for the past 20 years. I've used the splitter in the horizontal position maybe twice. Sitting on a homer bucket with the splitter vertical is my preferred method.
As soon as I seen that tractor muffler attached with wire I gave a thumbs up. I knew it was going to be a good one ! LOL

The Huskee Splitter is prone to wear under the slide if not over greased. Retract the slide and force grease to both sides of the of the slide. Good video.

Hi Mustie, I bought a Speeco 22 ton log splitter at least 30 years ago and it gets used a lot!! It's been very reliable. The only thing I had to do to it was to replace the hydro valve because it would no longer stay in the up position. When you push the handle up it should release automatically when the ram gets to the top. You don't have to hold it. This is very important because it allows you get ready for the next split while the ram is raising. I use my splitter in the vertical position and I discovered that if I bring a supply of wood near the splitter, I can sit on a 5 gallon pail, or whatever, and it really saves my back. I split mainly oak which is very tough , but the 22 ton splitter has no problem with it. I leave the splitter hooked up to my tractor while splitting as well. That way I can move it any time I want to. Also I leave my trailer on another tractor, (JD 318 BTW), parked next to me so I can toss the wood into it without ever getting off my butt! This works so well that I've been doing it for years.
I picked up a "broken" gas powered pressure washer on craigslist for next to nothing and fixed it by cleaning the bypass valve and replacing a 30 cent o-ring. Never even would have attempted it if I hadn't watched your channel!

Absolutely use it in the vertical position whenever possible. I can't count how many cords I've split over the 20 years at my ranch. I heat both the shop and house with wood, so you can imagine the scale I use each year. Cheers! Zip~

Same here. Vertical saves your back. I usually take the splitter to the tree rather than bringing the tree to the splitter.

I resently obtained a 1976 log splitter, it was left out in the woods for at least 25 years, I put a new 5 horse industrial breaks and scrap em on her and got her working but recently realized it was full of water in hydraulic tank . Been cleaning it out and getting ready for fresh paint! Glad I won't be splitting by hand this year!

Don,t let people ride in the pedestal seats at planing speeds! The force of bouncing around can toss the passenger, break the mount out of the deck or just break off the seat.
I second this. Especially on an older boat where the wood might be getting weak. But on a dead smoth pond it's probably alright and I'd do it too. But the second you start putting side load on them, like bouncing and chop I wouldn't try my luck. I'm not too sure what the top end on that boat is, probably not much with a 150, like 50ish? But when you get in to faster boats it's a bit of a learning curve. It just doesn't drive like a car. The one I have currently has a nasty tendency to tourqe the back end to the right and if you correct with steering it throws it in to a violent chine walk. Most of these things can only be corrected slightly by setup, but mostly in the way you handle them. I've gone pretty fast in a car. But boats are a different beast entirely. When they decide to go sideways at speed its an experience. I love them to death but every time I've been in a boat that breaks 80 I get that sketchy feeling, just knowing how quick every thing can litteraly go sideways.
I'm surprised these things don't just start running the moment you walk up. They know it just a matter of time.
Those splitters are a life-saver. Saves your back and a ton of time if you do a bit of wood. Definitely a job well done. You fixed it AND made it safer to operate. BTW, you always run it with the splitter down so the gas tank isn't an issue.
When I was little I used to split logs with my dad using one of those screws that attaches directly to a tractor. No safety at all on that puppy, once the screw bit into the tree you had better let go or you were going with it. Logs were also freaking huge. Ah the good old days when the risk of losing a hand or getting impaled through the chest was all part of the daily routine. Today he has a full setup that both cuts and splits it into perfect sizes all without you getting in harms way. We have one of those electric driven piston splitter at our summer house but it is so painfully slow hehe.
I borrowed one of those screw splitters that attached to the axel on your car. I used it just enough to say I tryed it and have the story to tell. That thing was dangerous 😱
Flush cutters will also remove the end of zip tie without leaving a sharp edge
I just grab the loose end with pliers and twist until it breaks off, it doesnt leave that sharp tip either twisting it off like this
You and Jason work well together. I watch both of you, as I'm sure many people do... You guys might want to consider a collab playlist to put on both your channels.... of say.... a fulltilt restoration on an old VW van.... I'm positive that viewers from both channels would seriously dig it.

The only time you'll use that thing vertical is when you're splitting stumps to heavy to lift.
I have seen people elevate them a little and then vertical is easy on the back.
Or you'll use it vertical when you don't want to lift any wood at all. Sit on a stool and split all day. There's no rule book on how to use a wood splitter.
Or when your cutting a lot of wood

@@timb5280 No way. I practically never use mine vertically. You may think it's easier, but it isn't. Not at all. You're constantly bent over using it vertically. If you split more than a few cord a year you'd learn this very quickly. Vertical sucks.

Another great video Mustie, I would put an extension on the hydraulic control lever. I would also weld a tray to protect the fuel tank from getting hit with wood being split. Splitting wood horizontally with 2 people is way easier, 1 on the control lever, 1 placing wood on the splitter. Have a wheelbarrow beside the splitter to save time.
A general rule to "save your" thumbs, one person controls the lever and places the wood, one person brings the wood in and takes the split away. You don't want someone else controlling the lever, might lose a finger. Just a thought.
Great work on the log splitter. Everything is getting so rare so fixing things up is smart.
ive worked with a lot of log splitters and have split countless cords of wood. the only reason you would want to put it up is if the logs are too big to pick up and you want to save your back. for example, if you are splitting large maple with a diameter of 2-3 feet or more, you would want to put it up and just take little bites out of the log. you roll the big logs and put the flat when its up so you never have to pick up a 100lb log. if you are splitting normal sized logs, like 1 foot diameter, you keep it on its side. try to remember, you are not carrying the wood to the splitter, you bring the splitter to the wood pile, like right in the middle. with the splitter in the middle of the pile, all you have to do is pick up a log, lay it on the splitter and pull the lever. leave all the really big logs for last, bring the splitter to them and put the splitter in the up position and just move the big longs on the ground into position. if you never worked with a splitter before, be careful. hard wood can almost explode, same with logs with lots of knots. wear gloves, glasses and work boots and make sure your junk is no where near the log.
The welds holding the gas tank are WAY Nicer than the ones holding the engine platform!!! 👍 Plus I would take ANY log splitter over the stupid axe and wedge I usually have to use when I visit my friends house who has a fireplace...lol

Hi from California 80 mi. from Oregon border, I picked a 20 ton through a barter deal put on a 8.5 hp from a rototiller the original engine was a 5hp. Works great I run it horizontal and a folding chair helps I broke my back in 2014 and can't stand the jarring from hand splitting anymore. The splitter runs just over idle all day just fine. Great video and a little t.l.c. and I have returned ( given,, sold cheap to people in need) things back into their usefulness. Thanks to UA-cam and people like you for putting on videos and useful information out there for us to learn from. 👍👍
Don't forget to keep the splitting rail oiled every time you use it cuts down on wear on guides

So there you are - the next log to be split is a 30 - 36 inch diameter one. Green, heavy hardwood and it's a little heavier than Crusty ever was. You struggle to somehow get it up, (the log of course!) finally balancing it with one hand while you make the first split using your other hand on the hydraulic controller's arm. Now both halves begin to split and start to fall - OMG - which one to catch!
I, on the other hand would put things into the vertical mode so I could roll and inch the Big 'un (flat on the cut) under the ram wedge and break it up into bite-sized pieces before dropping the arm to the (much safer) horizontal - to finally split 'er up.
For me, the preferred splitting position is always horizontal with a once-in-a-long-time vertical set-up for very large diameter, awkward, splits. A temporary "floor" using a couple of loose 2x4s allows the top of the splitter plate to be closer to the "new floor" height and that allows the log-on-end to be much more steady.
If I have a number of 24" diameter 'Sort-a Big 'uns" I put them in the bed of the pickup and back into (perpendicular to the ram area of) the splitter rail. The tailgate comes to a few vertical inches below the splitter rail height and splitting large rounds just means rolling one up into place and letting the far 1/2 just roll/drop back into the truck bed after the first split. Use your body to stop the near 1/2 piece from falling. Better'n a 2 wheeled wheelbarrow.
Maybe a better spot for that tank would be on a raised plate forward of the engine (towards the nose of the trailer) and leave the fabricobbled plate as a momentary spot to lay/put a split piece on. Where you have it now it's only a matter of time until that white tank ....... I have the original same model and the Briggs 675 E (190 cc) had the tank as part of the top of the engine assembly (far from dropping firewood logs. The vertical shaft in mine has the hydraulic pump mounted underneath so the hydraulic hoses were "HANDIER" to run than these you have.
The 'standoff' to raise the horizontal splitting rail to level that you fabricated came standard from the factory. It was removed.
You can also split a horizontal log with the wedge parallel to the grain. Stand the bucked up piece on end (on top) or laying down (vertical setup.) Like Abraham Lincoln splitting rails.
Don't forget that a splitter can also be used as an emergency, make-do, 22 ton hydraulic press, too.

* You asked the question, whether the Log Splitter was used Horizontally or Vertically more often. Horizontal, if it's smaller logs. Vertically, if the logs are big and heavy. You can barrel-roll a log, on its end, up onto the splitter, when it's Vertical. It is laid back just enough that the log won't fall back out while you're splitting it.
* Most pipe fittings are "cast-iron" and won't get a good weld. you have to "Braise" instead. If it's "cast steel", you can weld to it and it will take.
* You bet us you would make a mess while pouring the hydraulic oil out of the 5 gallon barrel. You can get a "c-vent" that goes thru the pouring hole and it clips onto the spout and goes back inside the bucket you're pouring from, and introduces air into the container. This allows glug-glug-free pouring.

I have one of these splitters. Bought at tractor supply in August of 2007. That koler enginelooks like it came out of a wheelhorse tractor. Lots of fabrications as the original splitter engine was a vertical shaft ! Love the videos

Looks like a new Chinese replacement carburetor. Those Kohler engines are pretty darn good. Well if you take care of them that is.
Nice solid engines Kohler, got one on a rotovator, must be 40 years old,never fails to start.
@@stuartandrews4344 kohlers are fine if you don’t get the consumer models….which require lots of tinkering to keep running well and still may only give a few seasons.
My uncle's 1989 SCAG 36" Walk Behind has a Kohler Command 14HP engine on it, plenty of power and still going strong after all these years. A simple tune-up on it, new blades, new belts, a transaxle idler pulley, and it was right back to cutting grass and leaving stripes. Those old Kohler engines were good...not too sure about the new ones, I only have 3-1/2 seasons on the Kohler 5400 series engine in my Cub Cadet lawn tractor, but so far no issues with it at all, fires right up and plenty of power for a single cylinder 18HP engine, I think it has more power to it than the so called Briggs & Stratton 24HP Twin engine that was in my previous lawn tractor, that thing was gutless.
@@wildbill23c I have a cub cadet myself engine wise seems fine but tractor wise hate it its like driving a beach ball bouncing around. My old 310 is rock solid and could pull cars.😁
@@willf5768 Well there isn't any suspension on them so yep they bounce, every lawn/garden tractor does. Frames on them now though are pretty weak, although the Cub Cadet one seems better than the Craftsman I had before where the frame on it you could feel twisting a bit on uneven ground.
OOOOOOR, You could have taken one of your many power washer engines and returned it to a vertical pump application again. Whoever owned that splitter should be crowned "King of Cobble"

You can actually buy cutters for zip ties that cut them dead flush. They are used in bike repair a lot so I know at least Park makes them. Flush cutters for electronics work also as long as the tie isn’t too big. Getting scratched by those things is extremely irritating lol.
I was a painter for years at Timberjack,guys were always getting cut open by the razor edge left on zip ties.
I worked as an engineer in aerospace, and tie-wraps were used for bundling cables in the equipment racks. They had a gun-like tool that grip the tie, pulled it slightly tighter, and cut the free end off cleanly at the "knot".
Hey mustie, love the content, just an FYI, I noticed in the video you were holding the lever while the ram retracted, most log splitters will retract on their own after pushing the handle, when the pump bottoms out the pressure on the valve will return it to the "neutral " position

When tipping the unit from horizontal to vertical, you can lighten the load by running the cylinder out.

It's only supposed to be horizontal when you're towing it or storing it when splitting logs it should be vertical. Please don't take this the wrong way love your videos
The big stuff - vertical, everything else - horizontal. That's how I use mine.
Who would want to lift a log when you can keep it on the ground?
As you were. 27yrs in the USN. I have herd that so many times. It means keep doing what you were doing. Carry on.
Make a little stool to sit on. Split it the ram vertical.
Gather all the rounds around you sitting at the stool in front of the splitter vertical.
After you finish, reach over and grab another without getting up.
The control automatically kicks out at the end of retract, so you don’t have to hold it.
Since you don’t have to hold the control, you reposition the wood for the next split while the ram is retracting.
When you have a split piece, toss it near where you are going to make your stack.
Work till all your rounds are done, the gather another group of rounds.
Split till the tank is empty, stop rest eat lunch.
I have a feeling this log splitter has had many "will it run" moments in its past.

22ton oh its a baby. Smallest log splitter we use in on Australian red gums and box woods is 40ton and even then a 40ton can struggle.
My buddy had a home model a lot smaller than this. 22 would be great for firewood.

From running splitters for so many years, when you were mentioning the tank mount position, I was like, well that won't be optimal. It will be fine right up until a large chunk rolls off onto it, but you figured that out at the end!

I bought the same splitter from a retiree about two years ago. He bought it brand new in NJ, moved it down here because he was going to buy a cabin in the woods. His wife saw how cheap housing was in NC compared to NJ and he ended up in a gated community with a gas fireplace. I got it for $450 with almost zero hours on it. Those small tires aren't really meant for more than 45 mph and then not far. Great video. Learning with Mustie1.

A log splitter that size would’ve come with a small engine with vertical shaft. That engine has close to twice the power and is a horizontal shaft

I just used skills I learned from watching your videos to do a bit of long overdue maintance on a pressure washer that I need to use tomorrow. Thanks a bunch for the hundreds of times you've done small engine and carb tear downs. Turns out everything was a-okay but you know if I hadn't checked it all out something would have caused me stress when I needed it to be working.
You won't be splitting a lot of wood squatting down like that.
I split 10 cords every summer squatting down just like that. My legs don't like it, but it's much better than lifting all those rounds up onto the splitting bed. When I get tired I usually just plop a round down and sit on it and roll the rounds under the splitter.
I'd prefer lifting them up, too.

The guys I know who have those, ALWAYS use them in the vertical position... Get a little stool to sit on, split wood, boom, done... Twice a year is plenty....

Obviously you saw my previous comment... Or maybe I wasn't the only one who said it... But, just run the oil mixed in the gas... It seems to run real nice... You'd hate to blow it up now, in your moment of triumph..... Those injection pumps... they were notorious for failing... Or maybe you verified that all off camera... But if it quits working, you might never know.... You're trusting the beeper, to start beeping.....
Anyways, great job. Those splitters, you don't need it every day, but when you need it, it's awesome to have... At the very least, split all the wood you have, before you sell it....
👍 The Kohler 10 is the only engine that I never killed in 50+ years of owning small equipment. Mine was mounted on a Gravely two wheel with steering brakes and the quick hitch option. Damn, I miss that machine. That splitter would probably be more stout with a heavy steel gas tank. Thanks for sharing the video.

That bow seat isn't made for when the boat's on plane. The pin can snap off when torqued, then you fly off. It's made for fishing really.

Amazing fantastic ability to bring equipment back from the dead and give them useful lives again. Wish I had that skill. I've never used a splitter, but the vertical position looks like the best. You can sit in a chair and roll the rounds into place for the splitter. You and the splitter are also further away from the plastic gas tank which seems a bit dangerous to me. I bet Mustie has a metal tank in his stash that would work. A simple heat shield made out of sheet metal and placed between tank and muffler would also help. But I'm not complaining. I've seen many Mustie videos, and wish I had his knowledge and skill. Great work.
