40 is perfect at idle and climbs with rpms anything below that is low oil pressure, you have a great motor. They prob just gave you a little thicker oil

After some crazy bursts of tear bustin' laughter in all these comments I've come to the conclusion that my recent oil change, with the same weight oil and same fluctuating high psi is twofold:
Weather was colder outside AND as a result the clearance tolerances in the engine had to deal with a little thicker viscosity thus creating higher pressure.
I'm not saying it's good or bad because my gague, when warmed up, always stayed at about 30 psi and right now, in December PNW, it's fluctuating back and forth as high as 70ish. I've been hesitant on driving it too, 'cause I don't want to blow my shit out either but I'm gonna run it.
It's only a '89 454 on a 1 ton frame and the engine sounds rather good so when the oil thins out a bit I think it will be just fine. Sometimes ya just gotta get after it. I hope my input is encouraging and helps some of you folks out.

D id you figure it out? I have a 04 yukon with 5.3. Normally 40 at idle 60 at higher rpm. I have about 2k on this oil change, the other day I got heavy on the throttle getting into traffic. Oil pressure ran past 80 probably 90 then. Now idle is 60 plus at 500 rpm and cruising at 2000 rpm 80s. The only recent thing done to the car was fuel pump and that should have nothing to do with the oil pressure. Am cruising UA-cam looking if anyone has had the same issue and found a fix. My only concern is blowing off the oil filter or causing a seal leak on the crank because of the pressure.
Like I said, I normally drive like an old man, but I got on it going into traffic, about to 4grand, I watched the oil pressure hit about 90 that's where I let off. Now at highway speed 2000 rpm it hangs out around 80. At idle in drive it will eventually go down to about 65. If you found a cure I'd like to know. Just have a little over 100k on the vehicle and want to keep it. Thanks for any insight

There is an oil pressure relief valve inside the oil pump. It is easily accessed on the pump itself. It's a plug, spring, and a kind of cylinder. The pressure acts at the top end of the cylinder and pushes it back. That will open a bypass channel within the pump (return the oil to the crate). Rule of thumb is 10 PSI per 1000 RPM for the relief valve. So around 60 PSI before it opens is kind of normal (when you redline the engine). Oil type is a factor, dirt is a factor, age, etc... To experience a "change" in behavior is expected if there is a new type of oil (better?) or the valve suddenly starts to actually work as it should.
Anyway - the oil pressure relief valve should not be forgotten when exploring odd pressure readings.
You can buy valves with different settings for relief if you for example want higher pressure before it opens (typically racing applications). Here is an example:

For oil viscosity. Thick oil increase pressure try bigger oil filter and 5 -30 weight engine oil and mystery red oil to flush the high mileage engine oil jacket. Valve lifter oil hydraulic easily get clogged up. Please replace the oil sensor. The oil sensor for pressure and another sensor is oil temp sensor that it goes up to 150- 160 degree Fahrenheit nominal max is 185 degree.

My gmc sierra does the same exact thing. Except it goes way higher then what you show in the video. Mine nearly maxes out. After about 20 minutes of normal driving it goes back to normal pressures. I've never had an issue with it. Its just that the new oil is thicker. The old oil is broken down and contaminated which thins it out a lot and shows a lower pressure.

My opinion... the that oil pressure is perfect... I have an 02 avalanche with 370,000 miles and it is the same. When I first bought it it was the same way. As I put miles and miles on it the oil pressure started getting worse. I know you have seen where people change the o-ring on the pickup tube. Well I did that and my o-ring was ripped all around. I put the new one on and I had GREAT oil pressure. I see your truck is not fully warm yet and that will cause the pressure to go to 80 when you rev it up like that.

Same issue, same make and model as OP here. Been meaning to change the oil pressure sending unit (/pressure sensor) for a while, but haven't had the chance. For a while ours would stall out at a stop light or while backing out of a parking spot (around 3k miles on synth blend oil), reporting "oil pressure low turn off ignition" on the dash. Got an oil change and hasn't happened since, but still want to swap it out.
Now we're getting rough acceleration. Guessing it might be the throttle body or fuel regulator for that... So many prob'ms! But do like the vehicle.
'05 and up have TBs that need to be serviced by mechanic, so I hear.
Good to know about the cluster!

My jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4×4 with the 4.0L6 the oil pressure is up pass the 3/4 at startup and when driving it sits very close to the 3/4 always and that's a good thing .I bought it with a 4 inch lift with 33 inch ×12.50 R17 tired and rims And it was done 100 % correctly due to buying it from an Elderly Man Whom is a mechanic and has been for over 40 years And He Definitely Put A High Performance Oil Pump in it and many other upgrades but that's why my oil pressure is so high.

Did you figure it out?

@@johnsonjeremiah74 wow sorry to hear that. But that didn't have anything with the oil pressure. Today I got in and checked with key on and not running gauge said 20 it idled at 60 so I figured that was my normal 40 at idle. I floored it and ran it to 6 grand. At cruise it was 60 psi. I turned it off and when I restarted it it was back to normal. Must have been a calibration error. My computer changes languages on me all the time. Maybe it's the computer. Don't know.

@@jesusesqueda8567 I am not positive about what happened to mine. I noticed that when I put the key forward it was reading 20 pounds and the difference between the running numbers were the same. After I replaced my fuel pump I accidentally overfill the tank. I think that the computer had to recalibrate after that. I also tried to recreate the acceleration that started the problem and first time it lost 20 pounds the second time it went back to normal. I wish I could tell you what or why it happened but it worked itself out. It might have the computer had to recalibrate because of the new fuel gauge or the fuel pressure, which would really make little sense, but my check engine light is also not on anymore. Or it was just in shock from that much gas I put in. 🤔
I wish I could be more helpful.

    • @lankyeric
      @lankyeric  4 роки тому +3

Duh... I will return your condescending tone...
It's not normal... the engine has a bypass valve that is supposed to kick in before the pressure gets to high.
Gauges that are "normal" are supposed to read in the middle... your temperature gauge is supposed to hover in the middle... your oil pressure gauge.. in the middle.
      Your alternator... in the middle.
And.. if it were normal... why did I own the vehicle for 7 years previous and never seen this?
I even ran an experiment to see if maybe I just never noticed...
I didnt change the oil for a year... because I wanted to see if old oil would make the pressure go back down to 40psi in idle and 60 while giving it gas..
Well.. that experiment proves that I'm not crazy.. the oil pressure reads 38-40 at idle and when given gas it maxes out at 80 with the pedal half way down.

      No sir I did not.
However after speaking with a mechanic that works on our cities police vehicles, its not that big of a deal.
He said the hoses themselves can handle about 300psi. And the seals depending on age can handle 120-280psi.
He said only worry about it if it goes below the midway, then you have a problem.
