That "cold air intake" he has is a hot air intake, just drop in a K&N filter in the factory box and get Air Raid intake tube to get rid of the resonator and improve the airflow. That K&N "cold air intake" he has draws hot air from the engine compartment and hot air has less oxygen and it's not as dense therefore less power being created aside from that he has a aluminum intake tube and aluminum absorbs heat so your best bet is to keep the factory box that pulls air from the passenger side fender which is not hot at all because it's pulling the air that's ambient around it from inside the fender. The gains you get from a $350 K&N kit versus a drop in filter is about a $300 difference and speaking in the terms of performance you'll get maybe 10 horsepower and torque and that's under the most perfect conditions and you're not going to see that so dollar to horsepower ratio is absolutely horrendous.
Josh cool reply. Hey can you give me link for the tube and other parts I need for the stock box K&N drop in Filter upgrade please? I love cars and my 2003 GMC YUKON but I'm not mechanically inclined. No, you don't. the only thing a big pipe could do that's bad is if it drastically reduced the velocity of the exhaust gasses, exhaust scavenging performance could be lessened. This is a really big deal on two stroke engines, but still applies to 4 strokes when seeking maximum performance

Hey have you posted the video of the radiator and electric fan That may be the first thing I want to do can you post it how you took it apart and put in the new ones
Im real big into these trucks and doing a actual build, not a diablo tuner. I can name literally a 100 different people and send a link to their build that are making 500 to 1200hp with these trucks and the factory coils are more then up to the challange. GM did extremely well with these engines to where the heads, coils, and blocks arent really the resrtiction.
Jordan Comeaux I'm not saying the factory coils are shit, I'm just saying that I have observed a limitation, and find that my current coils help me burn less fuel
My 03 has the one pipe with flowmaster muffler and the k&n air filter. Plenty of power and my fuel mileage is insane. Its better than the 2 4runners i own. I love my avalanche.
Placebo effect. The "butt dyno" means nothing without dyno results to back it. Dyno tests have proven cold air intake does almost nothing. Black Bear performance ranks a bunch of dyno tests on intakes. The only set up that was PROVEN to add horsepower was an Airaid intake tube mated with a standard K&N airfilter in the box, or spectre dry air filter. Other then that, you are literally wasting money on CAI.
Finally someone with common sense. It's true the X or H pipe makes more power (again, this minor), the trick is to find the exact location it needs to be in the exhaust to be effective. If it's not the in optimal location, it will do nothing, may even cost you power. That wasn't mentioned and just looking at where this guys' is, it's way too far back to be doing anything.
All i did to my 5.3 is a K&N filter in the stock box. (CAI is worthless) Texas Speed 228r cam on a 110 LSA. (stock torque converter) Gutted Y pipe (i know douchy but the cats were shot) to 3 inch single super 40 and side exit before PR tire. Sounds great, drives decent, and above 3500 RPM it scoots for an old 4x4. Needs a tune horrribly though... god it could be so much better with one.
Dyno tests are biased in most cause running one pass isnt accurate on a dyno multiple passes are required i hate yo yell you but in most causes they add 5 to 12 hp which isnt bad for a simple bolt on
Really good work and great info. Since Watching this and doing some homework I put cai and H pipes on my 2015 1500, 5.3. Yes sir very noticeable. So now I can keep playing w it. Just for personal satisfaction, I don't race.
@@mehGyver The cold air intake pulls in fresher air from the bottom rather than through a small hole in the fender, more air means more fuel and more fuel means more power.

LMAO i see 28s on a 4x4 and think "why give a shit, it's THEIRS"... Not everyone is a follower, it's only material things that can easily be replaced. Stop thinking everyone needs to do the same things
I dont see the big deal unless people try to sell there rig as whatever the fake badges say like ive heard stories of 2wd trucks with z71 badges selling as a z71. People are scandalous!
Did you do a video showing what settings you changed on the tuner? I have a superchips tuner on my 07 Avalanche with a 5.3L and I’m currently running the 87 octane tune.
I have a tuner for mine but it didn’t make much of a difference. What all should I adjust. I can adjust injector slope spark and a few others I don’t know what I should adjust to get the best gains.
Torque management deleted is most of inTune can tunes. Zeroing fuel trims at cruse rpm. Add a little fuel and timing to compensate for intake and exhaust improvements.
I like to put 6.0 badges on my 6.2 and funny story everyone laughs and thinks its a 5.3/4.8 so people are always trying to race me with their slow trucks 😂😂
L Boss - maybe a built 305 or maybe they were better after 97. My dad had a Chevy 1500 with a 305 and that thing was a dog. Unless my buddies moms 92 four banger sunbird was real fast (it was not). I would also beat my buddys 98 350 with my 2000 5.3 every single time. Not that the 350 was a bad engine but the stock 305 was not impressive what so ever.
I see your truck has the transmission temperature gauge is it true that the gauge has to be a 2500 gauge cluster and that the only thing that doesn’t work is the odometer reading doesn’t stay the same
A cold air intake does make a difference in engine sound and responsiveness. I had a used Spectre cai filter without the proper housing and took the cover off the stock air filter box and took the stock filter out and just popped the cai in right before the mass air flow and just let it lay right in the bottom half of the stock filter box bc I just wanted to see if it would make a difference at all and it really did. It doesnt seem a smothered as it did it's like it can breathe now. Kinda the point of a cai i know but everything else is stock. But yeah I noticed a difference without the tubing and housing to separate it from the engine heat properly. And that's on a 2001 Yukon XL 5.3 Vortec with 360,000 miles on it. Stock exhaust and everything. Not as bogged down at all. I know I know I'm ready to drag race the world now. Lol
When you did your plugs what gap did you go with? I just installed plugs in my 2002 Suburban 5.3L. I think the stock ones came as .060. No I'm hearing they recommend .040. The old ones I took out had .070 on them they were so worn.
the L86 6.2L truck motor rated at 420HP can be upped to 455HP just by changing the intake manifold. That is the only difference between the LT1 and L86 motors. Chevy uses longer runners on the L86 so the higher torque comes in at lower rpm 4100, but the motor loses 35HP at higher rpm. So just change the intake and pickup 35HP. Camaros and Corvettes have LT1 motors.
What kind of tune did you run in it and also What kind of electric fans are you running I know u said they were 10k cfu but are they double what brand are they thanks bro

I have a 2009 Sierra. I put larger tires in it. Just 2 sizes up. Just a leveling kit to fit. The truck is extremely sluggish now. What should I do to help? Acceleration is embarrassing. Not sure how people run very large tires. I bought the truck used. It already came with duel exhaust. No clue the brand name.
Is it true that they won’t spin the tires because of the torque management? I’ve heard if you get a tuner and just turn it off or adjust it itll make a difference.
Hey man, nice truck. I just don't agree with what you stated about supercharger vs turbocharger and using power to make power. Yes the supercharger takes direct power from the engine. But the turbo creates back pressure which is robbing power too. Thus using power to make power. Maybe not as much but it still is there. And your electric fan is just moving the power draw to your alternator. Now you can say the electric fans only use power when there on and I completely give that to you. But when they are on you're just pulling power from your engine via the alternator instead. But honestly I do love your truck man!
I put E3 plugs in my 09 Sierra 5.3l and I my 2011 Honda Civic. THEY ARE JUNK!! 1 by 1 they all start cracking causing them to miss fire cylinders on both vehicles. I don’t recommend buying them. Nice video though.

I got my efans from an 05 junkyard donor silverado for my 2003 Z71... carefully removed the wiring all the way to the ecm and power distribution... Blackbear performance turned on the outputs to operate them when they tuned it. You will have to get the bigger radiator too... worth it!
I did a cam, full exhaust, S&B cold air intake plugs and wires and a tune in my 05 Sierra crew cab z71 and it’s a complete different vehicle. Beats a ford Ecco boost in the quarter mile 🤘🏻
You had to do all that to outrun a 3.5 v6?? Sad
Maybe some nitrous could help ensure your big gas guzzler v8 can outrun a Ford v6. Btw, a normally aspirated 3.7 mustang would blow that away lol.
Mike Litoris can’t argue with stupid people
@Mike Litoris tbh my f150 2.7 ecoboost has beaten 5.3 chevys and when i tuned it and installed a k&n intake it would go head to head on a Denali
@Mike Litoris bro i also have my 2008 gmc sierra single cab 4.8 456 gears built tranny 231/234 cam tuned im pretty sure i can hurt your feeling also if u wanna talk smack about whos got wat
is that odo meter correct? 300k miles? that's awesome.
I love my tahoe, im at 275k, never had issues with it and im not great at maintanance lol
What abouth a cam and a install gears trasmission???
I think I could do this or my son. I hope it would improve MPG a bit for my 03 Yukon. Thank you again for your comment

@@ridered7262 did you notice a big difference?
@Tom Wetz cam, cam, cam! Hello!👍
Tom Wetz what transmission would you recomend to sustain all that?
Ì agree with everything but the fan mod. I have an 05 sierra 1500 4wd with the 5.3 L and i swapped the stock fan setup for a clutch fan and have had no problems ever since. Before hand... 🤔.
Same here on my 05. I just bought a mint 2012 sle and I already want to do the same thing to it. 😊
Not exactly, you still need back pressure for your engine, so putting on the biggest sized pipe for your exhaust is not a good idea.
No, you don't. the only thing a big pipe could do that's bad is if it drastically reduced the velocity of the exhaust gasses, exhaust scavenging performance could be lessened. This is a really big deal on two stroke engines, but still applies to 4 strokes when seeking maximum performance
Engine Masters did a manifold vs header vs full exhaust test and discovered the back presssure really didn't do anything
No you don’t need back pressure but you have a point that you don’t want a huge tip
Back pressure is a myth that has been debunked
i have a 2002 Chevy 1500 with a 5.3 making 850-900hp have a stage 4 cam 6.2 throttle body with 1 inch spacer long tube headers high grade fuel pump new injects, crank, just spent anther 150 on new coil packs got new spark plug wires/plugs on the way a full custom made in take 6.0 heads completely re done 400 turbo trans 411 gears and last but not less glass pack kit
As a guy who owns a dyno and has a 5.3;
Cold air intakes don’t make a difference.
Straight pipes don’t make a difference.
Removing the clutch fan will definitely make a difference.
Tunes only improve throttle response. They manipulate the the voltage reading from the TPS
I got the 5.3 and I also have K n N cold air intake performance coils, wires, plugs 4" stainless exhaust and Diablo sport trinity 2 programmer running Diablo tune and mine will frickin fly and I'm running 26x14s . You can't beat a LS motor
If you have some miles on that engine you'd be a helluva lot better off with a set of injectors over a set of coils
Bruh!...just replaced everything coils wires plugs and it was MF injectors whole time and crack box around my air filter wished I seen your comment before I did it...💯💯💯
Which injectors would you recommend? I have 170k on my 04 Yukon XL SLT. Still running good but could use some TLC. Thanks...👍😷
I got a 2012 Silverado with 174k miles and I’ve never changed the spark plugs or coils needa do that ASAP
Jason Reyes yeah mine was missing like crazy in a lot other problems new coils plugs wires turned off the check engine light completely I’m over 350k now and I have to say it’s running pretty damn good again long live the 5.3L
@@jasonreyes6830 change the plugs but leave the coils alone unless they aren't working, there is no benefit to changing out coils if they are working, a spark is a spark
Hey have you posted the video of the radiator and electric fan That may be the first thing I want to do can you post it how you took it apart and put in the new ones
The factory coils are more then enough. The factory coils are fine in turbo 1200hp trucks.
Jordan Comeaux True but I’m sure that we have our excuses to have some sexy MSD bling under our hoods. Especially on a painted engine block.
Jordan Comeaux disagree. I couldn't run NGK laser iridium plugs on factory coils, now that I have accell super coils they run fine
That's strange. 6k miles in on a fully built 5.3 with factory coils and iridiums and no problems...
Informative and very descriptive you make your point to all levels.
Can you do a tune video and go over what you changed from the quick tune.
I put cai an bully dog on my 2015 Silverado my best mpg 27.9 o to 60 7 flat runs great for a 2 ton truck
Dyno tests are biased in most cause running one pass isnt accurate on a dyno multiple passes are required i hate yo yell you but in most causes they add 5 to 12 hp which isnt bad for a simple bolt on
I put dry ice in my air box.
Really good work and great info. Since Watching this and doing some homework I put cai and H pipes on my 2015 1500, 5.3. Yes sir very noticeable. So now I can keep playing w it. Just for personal satisfaction, I don't race.
See..I believed him when he said it. It shows. U might not.make crazy power. But you damm show not gonna be left behind
Stock intakes pull in outside air. Your intake is sucking in hot engine bay air. Cold air is denser and makes more power
Hello There No, they dont, thats why theres a metal box around the intake so that the air comes in only from the bottom.
How's that different than stock?
@@mehGyver The cold air intake pulls in fresher air from the bottom rather than through a small hole in the fender, more air means more fuel and more fuel means more power.
Want more power? Hood scoop over air box. High pressure cooler air forced into filter. Try propane injection. Cools egt in diesels. O2 sensor will adjust for rich condition
@@jatmomdadjt8744 yup what he said..i removed battery tray from bottom of air filter for more air
What type of electric fans are you running? I have an 04 Z71 Chevy Tahoe
Stock 4L60 went up so I'm using one from an 02 Blazer, and rebuilding the old core to a 4L65E til I can find an 80 to build and install
Then plan on running a larger intercooler with electric fans so she can handle the hills of WV better, then I plan on getting the MSD coils with NGK iridium plugs.
But I do want to upgrade to the X pipe, have the CAI
The truck has a little extra "pull" because those 10K RPM fans are SUCKING it down the road!!! LOL
Nice truck I want to upgrade my GMC Sierra second owner so and my first truck. Sheesh. Any pointers to start on
Haha nice hearing Lynchburg on UA-cam, my home town
I know this is an older video but I have the diablo intune i3 platinum and was wondering if you have a write up of the settings that you have changed. I’ve played with it a bit and haven’t really noticed a difference.
I like your truck,it looks nice.
I won’t harp on the Max tag you’ve addressed that,no biggie.
I own a 2003 Silverado SS,not crazy rare but rare enough. My point is,I see a 4x4 jacked up with running boards, stacks and an SS badge stuck on the door and I think “why”!
Justin Bradshaw I see a 4x4 on 22s and think why??
LMAO i see 28s on a 4x4 and think "why give a shit, it's THEIRS"... Not everyone is a follower, it's only material things that can easily be replaced. Stop thinking everyone needs to do the same things
I dont see the big deal unless people try to sell there rig as whatever the fake badges say like ive heard stories of 2wd trucks with z71 badges selling as a z71. People are scandalous!
menitojr Youre right, but on a side note, they do make 2wd z71s...
Justin Bradshaw Are you referring to the max badge?
Did you do a video showing what settings you changed on the tuner? I have a superchips tuner on my 07 Avalanche with a 5.3L and I’m currently running the 87 octane tune.
I think The most popular mod for the 5.3 would definitely be bigger cam
Nick Mcbride what cam should I choose for a stock 5.3 and what’s the best combo of upgrades for a stock 5.3 with 706 heads
Forever Being Flyy SHE-DRIP 230/238 camm and get long tube headers
I have a tuner for mine but it didn’t make much of a difference. What all should I adjust. I can adjust injector slope spark and a few others I don’t know what I should adjust to get the best gains.
Literally zero benefit witg your 'true dual' exhaust.
not only that but he mixed the terms "true dual" and "X-pipe" in the same sentence. True dual means true dual, both lines never touch
Ive had one truck race mine and I lost :) Knew I would, it was a tuned Duramax, prob pushing 600hp.
Hahaha even the 454 is slow a 305 and a 350 400 425 Cadillac engine is a lot faster than 5.3 and 454 Chevy ss why because it's to heavy
I see your truck has the transmission temperature gauge is it true that the gauge has to be a 2500 gauge cluster and that the only thing that doesn’t work is the odometer reading doesn’t stay the same
True dual and X-pipe are different. True dual means each side of the engine has its own exhaust line that never touches the other side
No scavenging.
Lol
5.3’s dust 6.0’s all day long. I didn’t believe it til I saw it.
it wont win if they both had the same mods
When you did your plugs what gap did you go with? I just installed plugs in my 2002 Suburban 5.3L. I think the stock ones came as .060. No I'm hearing they recommend .040. The old ones I took out had .070 on them they were so worn.
Clean truck man 👌🏼
the L86 6.2L truck motor rated at 420HP can be upped to 455HP just by changing the intake manifold.
I could roast you with my stock 6.0 gmc but you got a killer truck bro.

I have my lovely stock 5.3 silverado LS and plan to keep it as stock as possible.
Only thing I'll change is damages from when I wreck it every so often and wear and tear replacements. It's a 2001 with 270,000 miles.
Have you had trouble with your dashboard cracking?
My 02 Z71 4x4 is a standard cab short wheel base and just turned over 306,000. Had the valve stem seals changed and exhaust manifold bolts replaced. Runs great, uses no oil and shifts positive. Gonna try to get 500K out of it. LOL

Can I do the same mods to my 4.8?
Better off boosting a 4.8 bro
What's the name of the fans u upgraded or added to this truck? U got the link?
The best next mod u could do is long tube headers . Single most power adder u can do to these motors minus a cam
gun-nut257 Intake manifold
Jacob Maland intakes actually make about no power on these. The intakes are very well designed even in boost applications
Really? I didn’t know that. Is that with the newer LT1 5.3 as well? I have a 2015. Just curious. I’ve added a lot of power with just a few small upgrades. I’m just looking for more
Jacob Maland everything I have read and seen says it's not worth the money but maybe I'm wrong. Defently worth researching it before u spend the cash . I know long tubes are a great power adder though
gun-nut257 you’re right truck Intakes are just as good as stock ls1 intakes
I got my 2003 5.3 single cab with some 20x10 wheels and it can get shity does ok for fully stock
Good mods for 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0s are Cold Air Intake, aluminum intake manifold, exhaust, tune, cam, bam.....
TRUCK OCD stock intake and manifold is fine a cam and tune is where you will gain power
Blaze Kush no it’s not it’s a literal air BOX sealed and everything, a cold air wouldn’t require it , it’ll be open filter
@@angelr6524 the cold air intakes dont ad that much power... do some research lol! You can have a cam tune and headers on a stock air box and make tons of power
@@danielfoster7899 gets trying to say the regular air box is better. Of course you an make way more power with that! But add a cold air intake and your set
@@danielfoster7899 hes trying to say the regular intake is better and that's my point. No doubt in my mind what you said will gain power
What is the name of the shop in Roanoke that did your cooling fan mod?
Um yea buddy that truck is stock sorry to pop your lsx bubble. Besides that tune you have i dont see any real power gains. Nice truck and all but get you a tsp cam nothing crazy. A 220/220 114lsa long tube headers with 3 inch pipes running to the back. Swap heads ls1 heads flow better. Its what i found best for my daily driver thats just my 2cents good luck on your build.
Go check the new videos 😉 did all of that plus more
I have a 2009 Sierra.
I feel the other mod will be a cam or long tube headers like that. I have street fire coils on my 03 5.3 and i love them.
Derrick Callies I have long tubes on my 07 Silverado and it’s amazing sounds great and it’s not really choking the exhaust up
I have long tube headers down to a custom x pipe that dumps off at the back of the cab. I have a 05 5.3
You should definitely mention in a video on how you feel about squated trucks, love the channel!
If it takes these mods to equal a 6.0, why not just start off with a 6.0 ? Mod the 6.0 instead.
Not everybody got money, tools, garage space, time or knowledge to “just” do an engine swap. It’s about working with what you got.
Probably because he already had a 5.3. Dnt insult him
Is it true that they won’t spin the tires because of the torque management?
Where did you get the engine cover piece that goes on the radiator support??
It’s just the factory piece I painted
@@btgperformance9234 Oh ok thanks for the response. It looked good i thought it was a metal piece.
