    I like the "tight on the pop". The sound gets me excited in expectation for what's inside the bottle...even if the bottle is close to empty.

    Oban 14 is one of those Classic malts, and that's not only because Diageo says so... It is the first whisky that came to me in layers when I tasted it for the first time. That first taste is still very memorable to me.

    I need to try this at some point. I love the Little Bay (one of my first Scotch experiences, so it will always have a place in my whisky heart). I've seen more than a couple of people say that the Little Bay is better than the 14. I'm happy that I can get the Little Bay for $40, but the 14 is a bit pricey, which is natural for an aged statement, so that's been the blocker for me to this point. Despite some saying the less expensive NAS LB is better, I'd still really like to find out for myself and try the 14. In time, I will. If it was 46%, I'd be buying it tomorrow. Thanks for the great review. I now know what quince is, so I've learned something today. 😊

    Oban was my first steps into the Scotch World way back in 1995. Buddy was down from Chicago, we went to a quiet bar where he prodded a doe eye bartendress to pour 3 fingers neat for the cost of one. Stopped drinking for a bit (covid diet-fasting) so Im catching up. Glad you re back on scotch.
    PS enjoyed a 14 with my mom a couple of nights ago. Sweet heather, peat, grass. Its well balanced scotch.

    This was a Scotch I’ve had on my radar. Your in-depth description and profound history of Oban have put the nail in the coffin for me. I’ll be picking this up the next time I’m at my liquor store.

    As of late, I've really been focusing on and appreciating lower ABV whisky's. Recently did a taste off between Oban 14, Caol Ila 12, Benromach 10, Highland Park 12, MCCarthy's Oregon SM, Michel Couvreur Peaty Overaged, and CB Glasgow Blend. Really gotta say that the Oban fell into my wheelhouse this time around.
    A mellow, mellowing, mellowed profile felt extremely balanced to my palette and yet brought a goodly amount of complexity. Given my current mood, I definitely wouldn't drink Oban while distracted.

    it's funny. I like scotches at a slightly higher ABV, like 46+, but for american whiskeys, like bourbon, rye, single malts. . . I end up wanting much lower proof. 40% and lower sometimes. They're just a lot more fiery and some are very tannin dominant. I guess its the lower age compared to scotland. Even though we get heaps of wood extraction per year here in america, we don't get the evaporation and aeration that happens over 12+ years that scotch benefits from. (this is speculation based on stuff I've read on home distillation forums) . . . Although, some of that may be taste and cuts during distillation too. Would really love to see you review some american single malts in the near future. :) Virginia Distillery Co are super passionate, and a brand I'm very fond of. It isn't scotch, but it's a curious american love letter to the craft of scotch -- single malt, pot distilled, unique finishes. . . Don't let my comment about age get inside your head though! (sorry if it did )

    "squeaky, squeaky, squeaky....pop🍾" always a great opening (pun intended) to a vlog. Have had a number of Obans, although pleasant (for the most part) not ever been blown away by their products. Good history and review. Thanks for the efforts Erik. Cheers All! 🥃

    One of my favorite single malt whiskys The mash is lightly peated but not overpowering or harsh. Oban 14 has one of the most balanced flavor profiles on the Map, sitting alone slightly off of dead center and a little more into the smoke. It is a peated Scotch, but fruity (apples) and sweet to balance the mild unobtrusive base of peat and hint of smoke and copper. Sea salt on the finish. Just enough of everything, but not too much of anything. This is the Scotch I love to drink but I can't afford to keep in on hand because the bottle is gone too quickly.

    Because of the dominance of Diageo, and the relative ease of pronunciation, Oban has become a somewhat disproportionately popular single malt at bars & restaurants. It's decent enough to drink, and slightly more interesting than Glenlivet or Glenfiddich, but I wouldn't buy a bottle; especially at $75. Loch Lomand 12 at less than half the price is better bottle with similar characteristics IMHO.

    Good video, I agree with your assessment. I love good scotch and I have tried Oban 14yr, but though good overall, I lost my personal interest adding it to my home bar as to it's low ABV, and it's smokey/peet peaks being too subtle for my own taste bubs, though it's priced is reasonable for a historical whisky. "Nice" is a good description. Keep up the good work bringing us great content!

    I am really enjoying your detailed summary of these distilleries and bottles in this series. This is a favorite of a friend of mine as well and a great "intro to Scotch" whisky. You said it well-- moderate in all things, but a nice enjoyable whisky when you don't want to think a lot about what you are drinking. I would offer this to any newby but I do think like most Diageo offerings there are better whiskies out there for this money.

    Used to love it......in the 90's and even at some point in the new millennium(can't remember exactly when). Not near as much character now as it was then. Used to love the nice malt flavor it had along with the very mild peaty note, which neither exists in the bottle I got about a year ago. Too bad 'cause I used to love it. Way overpriced now too.

    Quick question, why haven't you reviewed the Ardbeg Ardcore???

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  2 роки тому

      After Ardbeg Fermutation I decided I would not spend $200+ on Ardbeg CR releases. The Ardbeg marketing department is running the distillery with a lot of hype, high customer expectations and low quality CR releases. From now on I'll stick to the core range for under $100.

      @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies fair enough, and I can only agree with you. The last good bottle, in my opinion, was the blaaack a couple of years ago. Still priced too high though.

    I'm a novice in the world of whisky (I just tasted around 30 whiskies) and Oban 14 seems to me the only it have an unique nose and taste.
    Someone can suggest me a whisky with a nose and taste like Oban 14 ?

    What stinks it is $88 plus tax now in my area. Before when it was about $75 before tax. I've got 1 bottle and I think after that I'll be 1 and done.

    such a boring malt, bland and thin. 14 years in refill casks, chill filtered and then colored, the 14 years are not really in there and its just a thin malt, id not even give it something above 75/100

    • @nzmarco
      @nzmarco Рік тому

      I don't think it's boring. I see it as a jack of all trades and master of none. And I'm happy with that as it's unique.
