    Wonderful review and beautiful tribute Erik. Please don't ever apologize for tearing up. Clearly Al meant a lot to you and I know he did to so many people in the whiskey community. As I hear Al finish up here I am teary too. Al was such a lovely man and we need more people like that in the world. Grief is difficult. Take good care.

    I only had a new talisker 10. Doubt they have natural colour. Also got port ruighe. I love that pepper finishing in talisker, it makes this whiskey quite unique. lovely whiskey for a good price 😊 sorry for your loss and thanks for the review

    My condolences to friends and family of Big Al's, he was a great whiskey tuber. I picked up a bottle of this Talisker 10 on sale for $69.00 and I am really enjoying it, but it's regular price is $75.00 and I think that's a little bit too high, I can still get Ardbeg 10 for $66.00 and I think it's a much better value. Same with the Ledaig 10 just picked one up for $79.00 so about $85.00 with tax still not that much better than the Ardbeg.

    Thanks for the review Erik... Talisker is one of my favourite Scottish whiskies and the 57 North(which my German Brother-in-Law has) is superb.
    I was actually going to watch a review from Al but I saw your Talisker 10 first and clicked in, but was shocked at the end to hear Al had passed. I'm sorry you didn't get to meet him. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

    Whisky evolves over time after you open it. Most of the time, it improves greatly over a period of several months. I usually don't notice a big improvement over just a matter of days, but I've had whiskies I'd rate like a 2 or 3 out of 10 turn into 7s or 8s over a period of months.

      My 6th bottle of Ardbeg 10 tasted like pencil shavings when I first opened it. I was horrified! A week later, I came back to it and it had evolved to become the whisky that I love.

    I had a similar experience with the Dark Storm. The neck pour was pretty horrible. Even past the shoulders a few weeks later. Still pretty bad.
    2 months later… a completely different whisky. The improvement was night and day.
    Cheers from Canada.

    Talisker is coloured and chill filtered. Nothing anywhere says otherwise, and no bourbon matured single malt is that dark. Also, it's Diageo and bottled under 46%.

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  8 місяців тому +2

      Whether or not the Talisker 10 is colored and chill-filtered your assertions are a non-sequitur. I have a bottle I got straight from a bourbon cask at the Laphroaig distillery that is 4 times darker. In fact it has a dark reddish-brown tinge to it. Diageo does many non-colored and non-chill-filtered. It is bottled at 45.8% abv but that has nothing to do with it.

    Nice one Erik, the oxidation is such a tricky thing. I know from the Caperdonich 18 I have, after about 6 months being open the whisky got even better but sometimes in whiskies like Laphroaig, that 6 months time will absolutely diminish the flavour. Cheers 🥃

    I have an older bottling of Talisker 10 and it's still very good a year later and down to maybe last quarter left in the bottle. Another Talisker bottle I have in the stash is Port Ruighe (pronounced Port Ree). I expect it to be on a sweeter side due to Ruby port cask finish.

    Recently did a comparison with the older label vs the newer label.....with the label change came a small change/tweak in the recipe....seems like the newer version has some of the 'rougher' edges smoothed out. Either way this is the whisky that got me started into peat and has become my all time favorite!! Plus that ending....WOW....what a tribute!! Nicely done Erik...

    I've just had a weird experience with a bottle of Ardbeg 10 which is similar to what you describe here. I had 5 doubles out of the bottle where it didn't taste like Ardbeg, there was hardly any peaty smokiness to it. It mainly tasted of lemon & lime, but after watching this video I decided to hold the bottle at an angle & rotate it in both directions for about 20/30 repetitions. This cured the problem & it now tastes like Ardbeg 10 should taste, I suspect that the different flavour molecules are of different weights & thus settling occurs, leading to some whiskies tasting disjointed. I was going to send a sample back to Ardbeg complaining, but I now know to turn the bottle to an angle where the liquid misses the cork & rotate the bottle to mix the contents. The Ardbeg had been open for a good month with no improvement from the airation.

      I've had 6 bottles of Ardbeg 10. My 6th smelled and tasted like pencil shavings when I first opened it. A few days later I cam back to it and it was fine. Whiskies need to BREATHE!

      @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies I had 5 double shots out of the bottle over a 3 to 4 week period, with no change in smell & taste. It wasn't until I rotated the bottle as I described that the whisky righted itself.

  • @tojge
    @tojge 8 місяців тому +3

    10YO being natural color? I don't think so sir, it literally says on the label it contains caramel coloring, maybe not if you buy the bottle in UK or US, but for some EU countries it is mandatory to declare that information (Germany, Belgium etc.) so there's that :)

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  8 місяців тому +2

      Actually in Germany they may state it has color even if it doesn’t in order to avoid the possibility of being wrong and being sued. So German labels are always correct.

    • @tojge
      @tojge 8 місяців тому +3

      @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Yeah, that very well may be true, but I mean, just look at it... for a 10YO ex-bourbon cask matured whisky, just compare it to something like an Ardbeg 10, this old chap's got a fake tan, that much is certain. And also, it's Diageo :) Nevertheless, great review as always, sir!

    Hi Erik, good review, only a couple of days ago picked up the Talisker 10 on offer €27 (around $29). You mentioned the 57 north, saw a bottle ( dusty ) in a small drinks shop for €99 ( around $106), worth a buy? RIP big Al. Slàinte Erik.

    Does your bottle state that it's natural color and not chill-filtered? I only have an older bottle and I'm pretty sure It doesn't say that on the label. Just looking at it I would guess it has e150. Either way Talisker is one of my favorite distilleries. I wish they would bottle it unadulterated for us fanatics but i get it, theyre catering to the masses not people like us.

I dont believe I was rude in my original comment I was actually hoping the newer bottles were in fact natural color and not chill-filtered.
