A friend of mine bought a RE for his first bike. Didn’t make it a year before he traded in for a Street Scrambler. I think these new Triumphs are going to kill it in this market.
Given that the triumph 400 won't see British shores till December, and that by then I'm sure enfield will have launched the new Himalayan 450 liquid cooled, so that will be a direct competition for the triumph 400 scrambler I'd say
Not just for youngsters , I’m 71 and bigger bikes are to heavy nowadays + the triumph speed saddle is only 790 which is great as my hips are going and I’ve shrunk 1 inch in height in the last 3 years ( it will happen to you youngsters as well 🤪😊👍) going to book a test ride asp ( red one of course) 😊👍
Not just for older & shorter riders.I'm 48 & had a crash & stuffed my back & ankles & light bikes are for me now.I got a Trident 🔱 for it's low weight & push it around no problems my old Interceptor would of been abit to heavy for me.These new Triumph 400(T400) are great lightweight have enough power for motorways look great.I looked at the Tiger 🐅 660 206kg but it was the upswoopped seat I struggled to swing my leg over with my bad back, hip & Trident 🔱 189kg & I could swing leg over seat.
Over here in Taiwan both CB350 are saleing like hot cake, flying off dealer lot, mostly because of the low price, and they do look pretty cool And our unique right of way here limmilt all motorcycle to local road so the 20 something horse power is more than enough for local roads and urban riding But if you are in UK where bike are allow on highway, I think you may find the 350s a tiny bit under power when riding highway speeds
@@kbarnbrook4993even though the power may not be necessarily, a lot of people here still buy bigger bike, because bikes are just straight up cool after all, even liter bike are quite common. i just ordered a CL500 myself(it is call CL Street here because Benz already registered the name CL500, at least that is what the Honda sells rep told me)
The new 400 seems on par with the KTM 390, but with decent modern classic looks. The 400X I'm most excited about as a weekday commuter, with actual ability for weekends off road. I'd love an XE variant with some even longer stroke suspension, higher ground clearance, and spoked wheels (please Triumph!)... even so the standard 400X should hit the sweet spot for many. The new RE 450 Himalayan could be stiff competition for it though, especially if it maintains RE's typically aggressive pricing.
You can see its a modern take on the 250 Trophy/Trail Blazer & BSA B25 Gold Star SS 250 from the early 1970s. I can see the 400 being a successful venture im sure.
......lovely to see triumph's trademark timing and primary drive cases adorning their new lightweight singles, continuing the original 1930's speed twin pedigree, on a lumpy little single, perhaps we will see a 400cc liquid cooled triumph trailblazer option to top the off road variants at some later point? Great uploads chap!
Thanks for the GREAT review!!! I'd like to see a comparison between the Kawasaki z400 and the new Triumph Speed 400. The Triumph is beautiful and new, but the Kawasaki is lighter and has a little more power.
The Triumph 400x looks like a cool bike for sure and can do some light offroading but lacks the suspension travel and ground clearance compared to a scram 411 or a Himalayan. Most of these "scrambler" bikes are just street bikes mascurading as true offroad bikes. The Scram 411 is the only bike l know of that is actually derived from an offroad ADV platform all the rest are just street bikes. That being said l would buy both the Scram 411 and the 400x if l had the cash.
Ill definitely be test riding the speed 400 in spring of 2024 when they hit the states to see if I like it more than the hunter 350 I test rode recently. If the speed 400 is priced more than 2 grand more than hunter 350, I’ll probably pass unless it really “wows” me.
Great review Motobob. I think the scram looks wise is up there and for the price. The trident seems a similar sizing and also comparable to the Benelli offerings in sizing for smaller bikes like the Benelli Leoncino 500 scrambler and 800 scrambler that are also lovely bikes. The only discernible factor for me buying these bikes is the dealership network in the United Kingdom and the people willing to work on them which puts the likes of triumph at the top but the prices are also fairly high in comparison to the models I mentioned. I forgot to mention another Italian bike the Cabalerro fabric scrambler 125 and 500 which are beautiful looking machines and FM moto And motoguzzi bigger 650 scramblers. I am not a fan of the 400 Harley rear end scambler fendering 😆
If the Triumphs are more premium priced, like the rest of their range, the RE interceptor becomes a very tempting offer too and with loads more torque, I will be patient and wait but I'm leaning towards paying a little more and getting the Interceptor for cruising longer distances and climbing mountain passes.
I saw that CFMoto is soon releasing a naked version of their 450SS. Modern styled but would be equal to the new Triumph's in weight and likely undercut them in price. More claimed power than the Triumph's or any of the mentioned rivals + 270° P-twin layout should also produce the best exhaust note!
Yup.. it looks so good. The best choice for a 35 year old bloke like me who is having a bit of a mid life crisis. My Yamaha r15 v2 has served me well for 11 years. But I ain't what I used to be back then. Now I need a ride I'd like to take out on weekends and not have arm and back pains after that. 😅
I'm selling my Scram 411 and im not overjoyed about it because its a very good bike and has never caused me any grief. I just needed something more powerful for much longer distances.
If triumph can keep the price around 6 grand or less than they'll be a huge hit. The bikes you forgot to mention are the Fantic scramblers. I've ridden the rally and loved it except that exhaust that makes it feel like you're riding a fat pony. Seeing the Triumph scrambler 400x makes me think I'll hold off a bit longer.
Speed 400 for me when they come to America 🎉. I got a new classic 350 last fall and I love it, I just need a little more power for weekend trips to the mountains. Keep the great content coming

I bet they will be priced very close to the KTM 390s, putting them in a different market to the Hunter, but within temptation distance of Scram and Himalayan shoppers. If Triumph are too greedy with their pricing, they risk losing buyers to the RE 650 twins.
I’d love to see a pic of all the competitors side by side with stats under each one including the other offerings in the 4-6 thousand category , RE interceptors would be included and folks they’re 650’s . ❤ personally I love retro looks so it limits the ones I’d buy to Honda , RE and Triumph I reckon .❤
Today you might go nuts over Triumph motorcycles, but remember that it was RE who was a pioneer in this segment who understood the needs of people and gave them a decent affordable motorcycle ! ❤️❤️ RE!
Really like the Triumph 400X, it comes round about the same price as an Interceptor 650. Not sure which to go for, whether to trade build quality and liquid cooling for a cylinder and and a few extra horses…
Considering the RE 650 weighs about 30kgs more than the 400x the extra 7 HP probably wouldn't make much difference, so it's just price then and what brand you like more RE being Indian owned and Triumph being a UK company
@@JohnnyXoz thanks, would probably go the Triumph route for quality sake. The only thing that is really drawing me to RE is the sound of a twin engine and retro styling for the price.

I bought a Scram as a training bike. I'm doing DAS training with students on MT07s. I have no problem keeping pace with these bikes out on the dual carriageway. You just hold onto the gears a bit longer. Off road it's agile, stable and easy to ride - it's certainly well beyond my level of competence. Where Enfield cuts the costs is in the peripherals, so you just have to accept that you will be upgrading things like chains, brake pads and so on. The tyres are just fine, despite being budget, so I'll wear them out before changing them. On the Triumphs, I agree with Stuart Fillingham here - the Enfields are not really the competition as they are very different machines with different characteristics and price range. Overall, I suspect that the Triumphs despite being pitched at the Asian market will do better in places like Europe.
Well I think You should also include the Gold Star 650cc and a Benelli Imprriale 400 as well as Benelli Leoncino 500 and Leoncino 500 trial. As well as Fantic Caballero 500 they are all hovering around 5,5K pounds mark. And I can't see the new Triumph 400 dipping below the 5K pounds mark.
I've test rode the CL500 and it rides and handles great. But this Triumph Scram 400X looks stunning, it deffo beats the Honda in looks all day long. But will it be as reliable. I'd have much more faith in the Honda in that department.
I think the 400x is a great looking bike. I was hoping for more of a drop down in the frame to accommodate a lower seat height though. I’d like to see a Himalayan with a 450cc liquid cooled engine with a 6 speed gear box. If the Himalayan had those I’d likely buy one. I’m seriously considering downgrading from my current 2016 Tiger Explorer 1200 XRT.
It is cheaper, less power too. I have one for 2 years now (in VIetnam) and it's a treat in the city and the occasional road trip. I would buy the CB300 against the Hunter 350 and the BMW 310. For mini adventure bike, I wonder how more expensive is the Honda CB500x!
Did Triumph actually mention the fuel consumption numbers? Fuel consumption can be a bit factor for some people (especially with the prices these days), so it could become a deal-breaker if these new Triumph bikes drink bigger amounts of fuel.
India pricing is out for Street - it is 2.3 lakhs ex showroom, around 2800 USD and for sure will shake up things here for Honda and RE selling their bikes at almost same price and half the power..
Triump speed 400 is simply great, extraordinary performance at low and middle RPM's but rear brakes and liquid cooling system could have been better. Overall it is a great bike 🥰🥰👍👍👍
Am I the only one who hates the way KTMs look? I greatly prefer the retro, or at least single headlight look. The over-under headlights of the Suzuki GSX-8S also looks great.
These make the same power as the Enfield twins but look better and probably handle better. If they are competitive with them I know which one I’d go for.
Same(ish) power but higher in the rev range and a lot less torque, and "probably handle better" is a big call given that RE have Harris doing the chassis. I'm about to say goodbye to my SR400 and these new Triumphs aren't anywhere near my shortlist to replace it, which is currently topped by the Interceptor.
I have the Duke 390 21 model. It's fantastic specially now i put a 14 tooth front sprocket on it. It's fantastic but you need to be tall because it has a high seat height.
Interesting comparisons video. Over time I still think either of the 2 R.E. bikes - HNTR 350, Scram 411, would work out better value from the Ownership point of view. Simple to 'DIY' Maintain, lower purchase_price, possibly lower insurance cost . It will be Interesting to see what happens. PS Of the 2 triumphs I prefer the looks of the scrambler. But still go for the Scram 411
This is what Triumph needed, a REAL entry-level bike.
Absolutely spot on!
A friend of mine bought a RE for his first bike. Didn’t make it a year before he traded in for a Street Scrambler. I think these new Triumphs are going to kill it in this market.

Everything depends from the triumph price. If it will be 4500-5000eur the rip hunter 350. If they will be more expensive then well..
Did Triumph actually mention the fuel consumption numbers? Fuel consumption can be a bit factor for some people (especially with the prices these days), so it could become a deal-breaker if these new Triumph bikes drink bigger amounts of fuel.
MPG will be better on the Hunter
Thanks for the comparo 🙏
India pricing is out for Street - it is 2.3 lakhs ex showroom, around 2800 USD and for sure will shake up things here for Honda and RE selling their bikes at almost same price and half the power..
in india 60k 350 cc bikes sold are enfield and 6k is honda and jawayezdi, these will take away those 6k due to pricing
Nice review. Thanks.
Triump speed 400 is simply great, extraordinary performance at low and middle RPM's but rear brakes and liquid cooling system could have been better. Overall it is a great bike 🥰🥰👍👍👍
Looks good.
Baby Bonnie would be better as a twin though.
Personally I'd go for the bullet proof honda
There is also the Harley Davidson X440 which is coming in July 2023.
I have 3 older Triumph but Husqvarna is the best in that category. I put 30000km on one. These bikes should be a twin
The Scrambler 400X 👌
Love your content brother!!
Agreed, I'd still go for the Royal Enfield too. 😊
Same(ish) power but higher in the rev range and a lot less torque, and "probably handle better" is a big call given that RE have Harris doing the chassis. I'm about to say goodbye to my SR400 and these new Triumphs aren't anywhere near my shortlist to replace it, which is currently topped by the Interceptor.
really want that scrambler
I have the Duke 390 21 model. It's fantastic specially now i put a 14 tooth front sprocket on it. It's fantastic but you need to be tall because it has a high seat height.
Look Great ,Price needs to be right , I Had A Triumph top build quality
400cc triple "competition" scrambler.... The ADV and SuperMoto killer. Lets go Triumph, give us a Unicorn!
Kawasaki Eliminator 450
Interesting comparisons video. Over time I still think either of the 2 R.E. bikes - HNTR 350, Scram 411, would work out better value from the Ownership point of view. Simple to 'DIY' Maintain, lower purchase_price, possibly lower insurance cost . It will be Interesting to see what happens.
PS
Of the 2 triumphs I prefer the looks of the scrambler. But still go for the Scram 411
i got the honda gb350s. I live in a city and its all I ride. always dream of other 400cc bikes...
