    We loooooooved cloth diapering our daughter when she was little. We saved all the diapers and are now going to use them on baby sister. We're hoping to use them from birth this time, last time we used them from about week 5.
    Have you looked into EC (elimination communication)? We did a lighter/easier version where we sat baby on the potty (from 5 weeks) whenever we changed her diaper, and after a short while she totally caught on and would from then most often go poop on the potty. It saved us a lot of hassle having to deal with poopy diapers. I urge everyone to give it a go, it's easier than having to learn baby's signs and signal (ec at its core) for when they need to go potty.

    I have a 6 month old & he’s started playing with solids recently. We started having a hard time getting the diapers clean & we started storing the dirty diapers in a trash can with water & vinegar. When I throw them in the washer I dump the vinegar water in with them & do a rinse & then heavy wash. This makes them so clean! Before we were doing 2 heavy washes.

    • @Just.another.mom3
      @Just.another.mom3 3 роки тому +2

      Careful that vinegar can wear the elastics and PUL and snaps, just rinse the poo and then do 2 washes cold then warm

      A trick for poo diapers is to place a disposable (or fabric/ one reusable wipe) square inside the diaper. If you are using disposable the majority of the poo is simply thrown away. If using fabric these can be separated into a soaking bucket first. I have also seen people reuse and wash the extra over of material if the diaper is just wet, but throw away if soiled! All up to preference but makes a huge difference and means a lot less scrubbing or extra washes equalling the diapers lasting longer!!

    Love this video and the realness. I feel like cloth diapering gets the same stigma as breastfeeding....in the way that people think it has to be all or nothing. We put cloth ones on my son for daytime and use bamboo based disposable ones just for night and travel. It works for us and is a happy middle ground. And buying them second hand is super affordable. I go back and forth between loving insert diapers and all in one ones. Thanks for bringing awareness to a topic that intimidates so many people!

      A great tip for night nappies is little lambs bamboo nappies. They are a 2 in one system. I used a fleece cover as these I found last the best over night. It can be very hit and miss and we sometimes used natural disposables at night too. Wool covers are great for nighttime too.

Now that we're finally here, I have them in my Amazon cart and I'm so excited to finally get to cloth diaper! Your passion for cloth diapering at the beginning of this vid makes me so happy! So cool to see that cloth diapering has evolved so much over time. My mom used her "old school" cloth ones on us as kids in the 90s. Just square cloths held together by safety pins! Don't know how she did it. These new ones make me excited for starting a family! 🥰

    I’ve cloth diapered 3 babies from infancy to potty train. We use Alva pockets exclusively! What I would say is : yes 18 if fine! BUT if you can have closer to 30, the diapers will get used less per child, and will not need replaced for YEARS. I have the same diapers that I bought for my first baby and they still are in wonderful condition. I don’t baby mine either! We use tide, and dry in the dryer on medium heat! In 2019, I had my 2year old, 1yr old, and newborn ALL in Alva cloth diapers! Saves us thousands. Formula poop is water solvable just like breastmilk poop. :)

I'm cloth diapering my first, and it's been tough (mine have been leaking a lot - but I did get them secondhand). I appreciated that you said you don't do anything special to wash them, as that was a huuuge reason I was afraid to start using cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are amazing! And you’re 100% right, they are SO much easier to use than you’d expect. There is a price range for everyone, “China cheapies” like Alva, Bumgenius, $30+ for Blueberry or Smartbottoms or $40+ for work at home mom diapers. You want good detergent because you’re washing the dirtiest laundry you’d ever wash - literal poop. As baby gets older you may find the microfiber inserts aren’t cutting it and you get leaks. Prefolds are an awesome and natural fiber to use! Hemp is also great for night time. Be careful ordering Bamboo/Charcoal Bamboo from amazon - be sure to check the fiber content. A lot of times it’s just a very thin layer of of bamboo terry and a microfiber core. We cloth diapers both babies and now I sew them for a business! They’re addicting!

  • @susangilchrist781
    @susangilchrist781 4 роки тому

    Great info! I cloth diapered both of my daughters using the same diaper stash. One tip though - the reason most detergent isn’t good for cloth diapers is because it can cause a buildup that makes the inserts and covers repel liquid. So the pee just pours out the leg holes. We used powdered Tide (only a few tablespoons) which was recommended at the time. And girl - try a BumGenius. OMG.

    I worked full time outside the house and I was lucky enough to find a daycare that would use the cloth diapers. So I needed about 30 diapers to be able to make sure I had enough clean and dry every day to send to daycare. I used Alva Baby too though, and bought some of mine second hand. I only paid about $160 for all my diapers plus the pail and diaper sprayer and I never noticed a difference in water or power when I was cloth diapering. Cloth diapering for us was SUCH a money saver!

    We've been using the Alva baby diapers for about 6 months as well and we have 24. We wash them every 2-3 days and we haven't noticed a significant difference in our water or electric bill. Like maybe $5 a month? Sooooo worth it. With disposables we can easily spend $60/month.

    Hey Nikki! I’m not a mom but I used to nanny for a wonderful family of three kids and the two year old was wearing hybrid cloth diapers (I believe that’s what they’re called). The “inserts” were directly on the little one’s bottom and it was suuuper soft and comfortable. Plus it was easier to change because most of the time I only had to change the insert and not the whole diaper (unless there was leakage). I also found it easier to clean the poop off since again I was only cleaning the insert and not the whole diaper, which would’ve been very bulky and difficult to do in my opinion. Mind you she was two years old and was eating solids so her poops were completely different from a new born! Just thought I would share my experience. I love you and your wonderful family ❤️

    My baby boy is 9 weeks old and I LOVE cloth nappies/diapers. I'm using a mix of muslins, prefolds and wraps, all in ones and pocket nappies. Pocket nappies are my favourite so far.
    Anyone UK based and like the look of these Alva pocket nappies...I really recommend Little Lamb. They're good value, made in the UK and the quality is amazing.

      I loved little lambs. Although I didn’t rate the covers. The elastic on the legs was very harsh as it’s a double gusset. I don’t think I tried their pocket nappies. Just the bamboo nappies with a cover. I preferred fleece or minky covers

    I used these for two yrs loved them. Did have to use an extra cleaning product when solids where introduced to stop bacteria and I used flushable nappy inserts (sort of like a dry wipe) so would just pop that in the toilet when I changed the nappy and they remained clean. I never brought new ones so they cost me around the same and they saved me two years of nappy costs when my daughter was older and had very big wee and didn’t wake trough the night I did use disposables for that as i didn’t want to wake her to change her through the night but I only brought 2 boxes of nappys before she was toilet trained

    Wow I’m not a mother nor am I even going to be pregnant anytime soon and i loved this video! But I watch all your baby related videos anyway lol mainly because I find everything so fascinating lol and it doesn’t hurt to start researching and becoming more knowledgeable for when that time does come. But I also watch because my only sister is expecting her first baby boy. So I very often share your baby videos with her. I hope she can give cloth diapers a try. At least for a few months. Thanks Nikki! 😊

I’ve always wondered about the environmental impact of disposables. Thanks for the video! Hopefully my future fam will be as adorable as yours

    I've always wondered about cloth diapers but never really had any good information on how it actually works day to day. I'm currently not pregnant or planning to be any time soon, but I do love the idea of cloth diapers! :D I LOVE these types of videos because things that might seem 'common knowledge' to a lot of mums, are not to people who are planning on having a child but just want to educate themselves some more first :)

    A trick I have seen to make stuffing the nappies easier is to sew the liner just along the top so the two aren’t completely separate and you can quickly tuck it in the pocket

    @NikkiPhillippi Dont put your diaper Shells in the dryer. The waterproof lining in it will fade after some time and your diapers will start leaking and you will have to buy new ones. Also of you have hard water, you have to use a water softener for the washer or the hard water will build up and cause leaking problems too. ❤
