    I fed my three boys for 10 months, 14 months and 18 months. So proud of myself, lol. In the Netherlands we have something called 'kraamzorg'. After you deliver your baby someone comes to your home for an entire week (longer if needed), 8 hours a day to help you take care of your baby. They help you with breastfeeding, make food for you, clean the bathroom, check on the mothers health, watch the baby so you can take a nap. IT IS THE BEST THING EVER.

      Here in the US we can hire postpartum doulas to help out, but they are not affordable for most mamas.

      Health insurance does cover most of the costs. You only pay a small amount yourself so it is very affordable.

      @@Chloe8513 My midwife helped a lot when she did home visits after birth (checked my health and baby, helped me breastfeed, taught me how to bathe the baby) but she didn't do housework (I'm in Canada). Kraamzorg would be amazing

    I’ve breastfed two babies, my oldest daughter to closer 18 months and it was because I had become pregnant with baby #2 which I breastfed I believe around the same. It was a journey that’s for sure and learned so much from my oldest daughter, it was soo much easier with the second. Your doing great any way u feed ur baby!!

Thanks for being so open about your journey!

    Hi Nikki! I have a 2 year old son and I chose to exclusively pump. I had this vision that I would breastfeed but when it came down to it, it was just not as easy as I thought. I wish I kept trying. But I didn't have the right knowledge/support. Breastfeeding & pumping is a HUGE learning curve and it's a ton hard work! A lot of people assume it's as simple and popping the tot on the tit and away you go lol. You should be so proud of yourself for persisting, but also for recognizing that you needed to make a change for your body/mental health! I was having a really hard time breastfeeding and it was starting to take a toll on me mentally so I switched to pumping to save my sanity. A happy mama also makes a happy baby! Don't forget that you matter too! It's easy to forget to take care of yourself once a special part of you is living outside your body! Mom's are amazing and give everything for their little ones!
    My tip is about treating & preventing clogged ducts/mastitis - as soon as you feel a clogged duct forming massage, apply heat, take a Tylenol, rest, breastfeed or pump as much as possible on the affected breast (you're not going to want to but it will help to clear the duct) with his chin in the direction of the clogged duct. There are special "massagers" you can buy to use on clogged ducts, but if you have your own personal vibrator it's literally the same thing! Also, if you are having a hard time getting him to latch when you're too engorged, pump or express a little before to soften the breast to make for an easier latch. This might be TMI, but if your nips get itchy, rub the inside of a banana peel on them... when my doctor told me to do this, I looked at her like she was crazy 😂 I later found out how satisfying it was. I wanted to email you but couldn't find your info! Thank you for sharing your journey as a new mom! Stay safe 💙

    Okay finally made it through this whole video☺️🎉. I wanted to leave a couple notes/thoughts I had as I was watching this: 1. Be careful with cold compress. They help with enforcement, because they lower milk supply. I used it exclusively with weaning my first. I don’t really agree with LCs who say to use cold compress during the first months when your supply is meant to be increasing. 2. The Doctor browns bottles also have different flow nipples, but I noticed you were using the standard bottle version and that one is specifically for formula fed babies. The wine the LC was likely referring to was a slow flow wide neck Doctor browns bottle (we used level 0 for a LONG time with my first son). I’m not sure how you feel about silicone, but other great bottles are the Boon Nursh bottles. 3. Yesterday I had to dump 40 bags of breastmilk and I was devastated. I get how excited you must have been to pump 8oz. I was the same when I exclusively pumped for my first which i transitioned you when he was 3-4 months old after a lot of pain BF. 4. I don’t know if you’ve tried this, but the laying back while breastfeeding position is a really comfortable position and that’s the one I do with my second baby all the time. Way better in regards to not being painful. 5. I love how supportive Dan is as a partner to you and it honestly is really refreshing to hear about a guy being that supportive about something that most men shy away from. 6. Love is best. I think the terms breast is best and fed is best build these notions that we are some how not being the best mom when we don’t do one or the other & it just causes a lot of pressure on moms. I pumped for my first and now when I reflect back on that as I EBF my second, I think what the heck man, why was I a jerk to myself? My baby grew into this magnificent toddler and I did that with love. You’re doing great Nikki💗

    Ive had mastitis 7x now im on 11th month of breastfeeding and with the mastitis came milk blisters . Just power through it if you get it. I do hope you don’t ever get it tho. Its been a very rough breastfeeding journey for me but its worth it bc its what he wants. Happy baby happy life lol wish you all the best in your continued breastfeeding journey. If you get open sores on nipples if you put your breastmilk on them and air dry itll work really quick and its all natural. My lactation specialist recommended it and its great.

    I don't have my own children yet, I'm not pregnant but wish I was! My husband and I are dying to start our family but working on our savings and being in our own home first. It's so difficult for me to watch or see other pregnancy and baby videos. Nikki I found this so helpful, I've been researching obsessively for years (and I have younger siblings with a large age gap so I've helped raise them) but hearing your experiences as a first time mom this has been so helpful! Seeing your family brings me joy and peace even through all of my anxiety. I can't wait to go on my own journey of motherhood, thank you for your honest experiences and sharing with us all.

    I had mastitis between Christmas and New Years when my son was almost 4 months old and it’s honestly the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. Thank god for my husband who took care of both me and the baby and luckily I had a freezer stash we were able to pull from because my milk production dropped dramatically. Having to pump through mastitis, I pray no one ever experiences it! But my son is almost 7 months old, still exclusively pumping and able to feed my baby and usually put another 6oz bag in the freezer every day or every other day. So glad I’ve stuck it out! Goal is to pump for a year, and boy I am counting down the days!

    I went crazy with the research on breastfeeding when my baby first arrived. There are also studies about having a direct latch and having your baby's saliva in contact with your nipples signals your body into producing the specific antibodies and vitamins that your baby currently needs. This is what really motivated me to keep pushing for direct latch.
    This video is such a breath of fresh air. I am almost a year into breastfeeding and being a mom and it has gotten easier, but it is definitely not easy.

    • @chaffinwinter
      @chaffinwinter 4 роки тому

      Just want to add after watching the video, it is totally beneficial to have baby to breast. There is a transfer of saliva that helps your body make antibodies if you or baby are sick to help fight that sickness. Plus it is totally a bonding experience. Also also want to add that you should be careful at this point with pumping as your milk has not regulated yet and it can cause an oversupply which is not great because that can cause an unbalance in foremilk/hindmilk. If you have an oversupply, you will have a forceful letdown which makes it hard for baby to nurse through the letdown and will cause loads of belly issues. I hope you see this as I can't even explain how much easier my life is now that I have baby strictly on the boob. I pumped and had to use a nipple shield in the beginning and it was miserable. PS, I'm sorry but I cringed so hard everytime you said harvest your milk 😂😂

    • @chaffinwinter
      @chaffinwinter 4 роки тому

      Also going add that what you eat doesn't effect your breast milk. Although it is obviously the best to have a well rounded diet but your milk is made by blood not your stomach 👍👍

    Hey Nikki! Congrats on your precious little one! I'm a long time follower of yours & just had my baby in February! I wish I could chat with you in real time about my journey, but here are some thoughts while I watched! :) Have you seen the documentary "Milky Way" on Amazon? It's about breastfeeding-I recommend it! Have you switched to anything fragrance free? I didn't use deodorant for the first couple of weeks but switched to Tom's deodorant which I love (non irritating like other natural deodorants I've tried). I was so surprised to learn how far back the nipple has to go for a good latch! Seeing a drawing of a nipple in a baby's mouth really surprised me and helped me to realize what a good latch is! Do you sanitize your pump stuff? What's your routine? My husband was boiling everything after each use but then we read once a day is good. Now we use a sanitizer machine by eccomum...I guess you can use the model that we got as a food dehydrator & I think you & Dan would like that, but I haven't tried that function yet! Aside from mastitis, women can get clogged ducts. I haven't had that but I guess Kristen Cavalleri had that and her husband had to suck the clog out since she was traveling and didn't have a pump lol. I guess there's an episode of "Very Cavalleri" with that story but I haven't seen it. Have you heard of or used lanolin? I like that bc it is natural and soothing-check it out if you haven't heard of it! In my breastfeeding support group, a mom mentioned milk baths. I thought this was a hippie dippie thing you'd like :) The mom adds 2 oz of her breast milk into her babe's bath for a soothing property; she said she uses it after her baby's swim class! Have you heard of paced bottle feeding? I just watched some videos on it and it's helping my little one take a bottle easier. I think that's awesome that Dan is so involved w breastfeeding- My husband is too! I felt like I needed 3 hands at times to position me and the baby! Do you ever massage like Dan did while you pump? That was something that was recommended to me. I also heard that if you're not with your baby, looking at a photo of your babe helps while pumping too! Great job Nikki and congrats again!

    Thank you for making this video❤️ I had problems breastfeeding too, I ended up exclusively pumping. I got mastitis three times. I finally got an electronic pump after getting sore, sad wrists too. I pumped my baby's milk for 6 months, and had a freezer stash for when I went to work part time. Now my baby's on formula and he's happy and healthy. I also felt sad about not being 'a real mom's not 'really' breastfeeding, but tha t mindset is so wrong. A happy, healthy mama is a good mama. So thank you for this video. ❤️ It gets easier.

    I’m right there with you! My baby just turned 3 months.. he was on my boob for almost a month but I couldn’t do it anymore and now I’m EP. I’m now only pumping 3 times a day with a 32 oz/ day output. It really frees up my time to be able to love and take care of my baby without always stressing about his . A fed baby is a happy baby! I love that you are actually talking about this as more people need to understand that not all women can have a baby on their boob all the time! Thank you!

    Love this! I'm 6 weeks postpartum and I have had a terrible breastfeeding journey so far... My baby girl has a tongue tie so she hasn't been able to empty me. Three weeks ago, I went to the doctor for mastitis and then a few weeks later I went to the ER for a breast abscess. I've had two procedures to help get rid of the abscess. Still praying that God will heal me of it... I'm waking up every two hours to pump and it is SO exhausting. Man, this journey has been SO HARD. And I'm still recovering... So thank you for this video. You've given practical tips that, once my body has finished recovering, I'm going to use. So thank you, Nikki!!

    There’s is no science on this, but my mom swore by drinking Capri Sun (specifically the orange flavor) to produce more milk. Whenever she felt she wasn’t producing as much (which I don’t think it was often) she said that helped her through her 3 pregnancies.

    Bravo, it covers everything. Thirty years ago, it was not so elaborate, probably more organic, but the principles remained the same. And yes, I think that breastfeeding is the best “technique”. It allows your body to heal quicker after the pregnancy. It also creates a closeness with your baby. However at a point, he may have more needs in matter of quantities, hence the other techniques which can be useful. I can confirm for sure that all what you say is right. At least by judging from my own experience.

    Hi, Nikki! I’m on my fourth month breast feeding. It is so interesting to see other people’s perspectives on their journeys because I raise milk goats, so I always thought of it in a utilitarian kind of way, but ended up LOVING the bond it has created. I’ve also done a lot of research and wanted to comment on a few things:
    - I got mastitis the first two weeks. It was so painful, on top of normal nipple soreness, plus a super high fever. I am so glad you didn’t get it.
    - You are right about the nipple flow: breast fed babies should have a 0 or 1 flow nipple the entire time they are breast feeding. Otherwise they get lazy and won’t want to suckle.
    - You are right that there are benefits to feeding directly from the breast. Your nipples interact with your baby’s saliva to determine nutritional need. If your baby is exposed to a cold, for example, your body will pick up on that and start creating antibodies within twenty minutes of your baby latching, so, letting them latch at least once a day, really helps their immune system. I know moms who mostly formula feed but still breast feed once a day for this reason.
    - Fenugreek has also been known to cause gassy babies. That might be why Logan is having tummy issues- breast fed babies are usually less gassy than formula babies.
    - My lactation consultant told me that the reason our breast is so soothing to our baby is because the areola develops glands that secrete oils that smell like our amniotic fluid. Isn’t that crazy?!?!
    It’s been so fun watching you experience motherhood and be so close behind me in your journey. You are doing such a great job! Please continue the updates.

    Thank you, as always, for sharing Nikki! I also appreciate the acknowledgement of women and thoughts and prayers for women who are currently pregnant. I am pregnant and due in the middle of May. I’m terrified that as things progress with this virus, the hospital won’t allow my husband to be there with me. I have not been planning for a home birth and don’t feel I can prepare in time for one. I just hope and pray every day that things will calm down enough and my husband is healthy that at least the two of us can be there together.

      Ok 1. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and you appreciate the thoughts and prayers.... it’s a crazy time right now. 2. I just want to let you know, if you areeee toying with the idea of a homebirth, I truly believe you could do it. If you guys got ahold of a midwife and spent a day watching videos to learn and mentally prepare I truly believe you could do it! I definitely made it look dramatic but I came out the other end trulyyy feeling like if I can do it, anyone can do it! Anyways, you will do what’s best for you and your baby:) I hope and pray the next few months go smoothly and are able to be filled with peace ❤️❤️❤️

    Fed baby is a happy baby, but also happy mom is a happy baby. I’m 5 1/2 months into bf my first, but I felt so much pressure in the beginning. In the end I’m happy I stuck it out, but I definitely don’t think mom should sacrifice her mental health just to give breast milk. It is the hardest thing ever in the beginning. It is extremely beneficial to have the contact if you can because if you or he gets sick your body will create the antibodies to fight the sickness either of you has and that's is tailored by the saliva of your baby.

    When you feed from the breast your babys saliva enters the breast and alerts the mothers body to what antibiodies the baby needs so in the next feed the body sends the antibodies through the milk to baby x its also a major bonding comfort for mother and baby.
    Lying down breastfeeding worked better for me when baby got older xx

      It also works that way if you kiss your baby. Especially kiss their mouth. It doesn’t always have to be through the breast. Some women find it easier to
      Pump and feed that way. Some babies struggle to latch.

    So, I think you are killing it. You are seriously amazing. I am currently exclusively pumping for my second daughter. Both my girls had severe lip/ties and tongue ties that although I got them released, all the professionals told me they physically could not latch. This was after 9 weeks of pursuing direct latch through cranio-sacral therapy, chiro, lactation & speech pathology appointments. An amazing exclusive pumping mama on UA-cam is Mama Alia. She has so informative content on pumping. Oh, and that hand pump can go burn in a fire. Double electric pumping is a must!!!! 😂

    Also want to add that we used preemie bottle nipples with my daughter for the first year of her life. It is a huge marketing scheme to imply to parents that they need to buy different sizes of bottle nipples (for breast milk-I don’t know how it works with formula).

    • @de5072
      @de5072 4 роки тому

      iheartmakeup23 like with breastmilk in bottles it just depends on the baby. I have a 10 month old and I’ve worked with infants. In my experience depending on if the nipple is slow a baby may get bored and end up wasting the milk. (In my state we are required by law to discard milk be it formula or breastmilk after an hour of offering it to the child and write how much they drank.) so many times especially with breastmilk moms they will get the next size up to help the baby actually finishing the bottles and reduce the waste. And with my son when we were doing both he would have a bigger nipple for his formula bottles and a slower one for his breastmilk to help with his latch before we ultimately went to just bottle and then we had the same nipples regardless. He’s 10 months now and he gets frustrated with slow flow nipples.

    Not sure if anyone said this but there’s info out there that the baby’s saliva goes into the breast when breastfeeding to help direct an immune response. So you are right baby on breast has it’s benefits if it’s possible to do!
