    The 2003 version just had this super philosophical and charming feel to it that the remake doesn't have. I think what made the original unique was its low detailed style of animation. Its similar to how all the new pokemon games almost look TOO good, but lack that magical nostalgic feel of the older ones. Less is more~ Also I found the original series of Kino's Journey had better writing which made the episodes way more interesting and Kino's character just seemed more badass, mysterious, thoughtful but also more vulnerable. I cared a lot more for that Kino than this one. Idk, I just found the new series to be a lot less remarkable, it didn't have the same spark

      The 2003 version was captivating, mainly cause of its spooky nature. The 2017 version just felt like a deep anime for otakus

    I've noticed a "trend" of sorts. Most people I've talked to that have watched the 2003 version aren't fans of the 2017 version, while most people who only watched the 2017 version really liked it. I'm in the latter group and I also enjoyed the show quite a lot.
    While the series is called "Kino's Journey", I feel that it's more about *the world* than *Kino exploring the world* . As long as the world and countries are explored, the series does its job for me. After all, the full title is "Kino's Journey -the Beautiful World-". Kino is of course the main character and gets the most screentime (she gets 7 episodes, not 4), but the point of the series is to show the beauty in the world despite its ugliness (hence Kino's phrase). Seeing the world from different perspectives is actually far more interesting than just from 1 single character. I enjoyed Kino's episodes as much as Shizu's episodes, and Photo's episode was simply phenomenal.

      GoldenPincers well (from the several times ive watched it) the original was a masterpiece. Everything fits perfectly, down to the order of the episodes (minus the 1st OVA), and even the animation, I still can't find a flaw other than the 1st episode is slow and boring enough to lose people with low attention spans.
      Comparing anything, from 03 to 17, 03 did it better.

    • @AlexAndriy1995
      @AlexAndriy1995 6 років тому +11

      I watched 03 a week before I started to watch 17, and I was slowly disappointed. Its looks better but wasn't as good crafted. I still enjoyed 17, but there's a difference between 7 and 9/10. Worst ep of 03 was on the level with most of 17 and best of 17 with just good eps of 03. Nothing was even close to 03 great episodes... at least for me

    • @priesteskana
      @priesteskana 6 років тому +8

      I have a theory that anime from the early 2000’s are pretty much guaranteed to be better than their remakes (broho included). I think a part of this is due to the fact that seasons are so congested now. Anyone who watches original vs remake will find theres almost a considerable amount of overall less quality (combination of all elements of a show) in the remakes. As to the exact reason for this i still cant be 100% sure i just find this theory to almost always be true.

    • @GoldenPincers
      @GoldenPincers 6 років тому +10

      I'm not saying that 03 isn't good or that 17 is better. I'm sure the 03 version is amazing, and I plan on watching it as well. It's just that I've seen the 17 version get a lot of hate even though it did great things. It works very solidly as a stand-alone, separate from its predecessor.

    • @Byakko_Byakuya
      @Byakko_Byakuya 6 років тому +11

      03 is amazing because it had a legendary director, Ryūtarō Nakamura (Serial experiments Lain). While the new director that took over, doesn't have much on his résumé... As someone who already knows all the twists and turns the anime is going to take in the adaptations, execution was more important than the overall story. (Also, hands down. 2003 had a better selection of stories. some of the best actually.)

    The new art direction really prevents me from watching it tbh. The art style of the original was what got me interested in the first place, now with the "up-to-date", clean and polished looks they turned everyone into glimmering waifus. What does it add other than eye-candy? I think the raw and unique style of the original adds much more and fits the world and story.

      I get where you come from as I found the almost 70s to 80s look very interesting when I first watched it, but at the same time the style they went with here look a lot more visually similar to the novel. I feel like the look of the 2003 version gave it an almost dream-like quality that really fit with some of premises of the countries she visits. A lot of them are more or less stage plays to demonstrate a fairly simple idea or thought experiment, so a simple art style helps reflect that.

      In my opinion people are kind of harsh in this community,
      not a lot of people seem to carry ones own opinion, rather just repeat what everyone else says..
      Everyone wants to be looked at like some kind of elitist instead of just enjoying the anime for what it is..
      I watch and enjoy tons of anime people hate with a passion, while still enjoying a lot of what most people love just as much.. Sometime I really don't understand where all the hate for specific shows comes from, and other times I can understand why some would complain but to me the hate is still unnecessary..
      Its especially shocking when it comes from the people who seem to cherish anime just as much as I do, but still tear it apart all the same.. Sure SAO isn't something I would buy or consider a master piece, but I thought it was done well and was decent for a 1st watch..

    As someone who never knew Kino's journey existed before this new adaption i found it a great launching point into the series. I felt like it gave me a taste of the world and the storytelling style and left me (purposefully) wanting to explore more. I fully intend to find ways to read the light novel and possibly got back and watch the 2003 version which, in all honesty, i would have skipped over because of the premise before the 2017 showed me what it had to offer. also congrats on the move and 500000 subs!!!

    You hit the nail on the head with this review on why the 2017 remake was so disappointing: the lack of Kino and Hermes. In my opinion, Kino and Hermes were the most interesting characters, and probably why the first show focused solely on their travels. Riku's group, the slave girl, and the Master's interlude were decent stories, but they pale in comparison to the stories that Kino and Hermes took part in. The narrative shift to the different characters were distracting and jarring, and often when these episodes came up I was sorely tempted to fast forward through them just so I could get back to Kino's story.

Princess Tutu is an amazing anime, and you have had images of her in your past openings, could you do a review of it so that more people get exposed to it. Every time I try to get someone to watch it, I have to get over the whole name thing. Guys are not generally gonna look at that. I know you put it in your top 25ish to watch, but it could really use a more in depth review.

    As someone who watched only watched kino 2017 while it was airing. I thought it was pretty good and was a highlight of the season for me. However I did felt the non-focus on kino and my personal enjoyment of each episode change drastically. Nevertheless, If you think you would enjoy a world of various different societies, I would recommend trying it.

    Congrats on your new set. The difference in the sound between on-camera and voice-over is jarring sometimes, though. You should work on getting a more even sound throughout. I don't have any real complaints about the audio quality itself, though. Sounds like you got yourself a good recording space.

    While I was pretty disappointed in this adaptation, the final episode of Kino's Journey 2017 is TOTALLY worth watching for the lulz.
    She fights man-eating sheep and the animation is so damn lazy they look like stiff plastic toys much the time. There's also a scene where the sheep are charging a jeep and the animators couldn't be bothered animating them colliding so they just blink out of existence.

  • @StormShaun
    @StormShaun 6 років тому

    First of all, Arkada, congrats on the 500k subs, and I can only hope you get more (also nice FMA wallscroll, I've got one of the cover). Secondly, this is a first, so it's rather exciting; I actually disagree.
    On a personal level, I love both series, they have their own feel. From the 03 Kino's more focused storyline and unique scanline look, to 17's multiple POVs and more modern look.
    As mentioned before, I like the different POVs and how it doesn't all focus on Kino. It's like a story that focuses on one character compared to one that focuses on multiple characters. As we know, this can weaken the main story (but there isn't really one in this series), but it can grow our knowledge about the world. We see how Kino and Shizu see and handles different situations, and how they can differ from one another.
    Either way, it's a preference thing; some prefer this multi-POV story, some prefer a more focused story. The good thing is that there's a series for people who like either one. To end it, I'd still like if they released another season, especially since I like the new style, and the CGI doesn't bother me.

    Both the 2003 version and the 2017 version of Kino's Journey is amazing. I just. I just love Kino. So much Lol And you definitely nailed it with some of the content feeling rushed, especially in the Colosseum episode. But since I already watched the original, I was able to still enjoy it because I had some context as to how that country worked. The side stories were interesting too, especially the ones regarding Shizu, Riku and Ti. But I agree that the lack of Kino was very disappointing to me. If anything I was expecting Kino to visit her master again since we already caught a glimpse of what she was like in her youth. Which was fun by the way. I could go on and on about Kino's Journey, but I'll just say, I enjoyed both overall, but the original felt more complete. :) Also, there's a new manga that's out for it. Check it out. ^_^

  • @hitori3667

    I loved both of the adaptations; I thought the new Colosseum episode did a good job of condensing the story into one episode, leaving room for more content.
    But it might just be my personal rushed opinion 'cus I have like 100 animes on my plan to watch list... UwU

    Kino's Journey for me has always been an interesting experience. Im realizing now how while it is one of my top favorite series. Its flawed. The way Sigsawa sets up kino no tabi with no real coherency but opens to alot of interpretation is both great and terrible. Its great because much like you explained with 2003 all of that added story & interactions add alot more to it than what the og source material does but at the same time it shows that its terrible seeing how much needed intermission is needed to either improve on or flow better. I started with the 2017 anime as my introduction into Kino's Journey, then the manga(s)/LN's and eventually the 2003 anime. As much as i like accuracy, I cant overlook how wrong it feels knowing that the og source was that quick. While I like to believe Sigsawa purposely lets it open to interpretation, I cant help but feel stuck between what to like. Im rambling at this point but I guess thats what it kinda means to be a fan of a series if it can be looked this deeply into. Maybe theres gonna to be a new Kino's Journey and hopefully similar to the 2003 but unquie on its own
