possibly. the movie is based off of a 1973 novel by taku mayumura. how much different the film and the novel are i couldn't say as i haven't read it and haven't really been able to find comparisons.

The funny thing, is that he doesn't hate SAO. He doesn't think it's great but in both his reviews he never says that it is garbage.
Because SAO wouldn't really be that bad if it didn't have a bland & nerdy power fantasy chick magnet main character for the audience to project themselves on... If Kirito just had any kind of personality the show could be quite good.

well yes, cuz the author already explained that it was his premature work. Which is why he is making SAO: progressive, basically a revamped version of the premature SAO, where it properly focuses on sequence of events and proper character development. In short, it is a better revised version of the first series and novel we saw

lol I know I know, jokes aside, I would not want to see him suffer mentally if he has to force himself either. I would be more than fine if he decide to stop making more RWOA after this. After all, it's his decision what kind of content he wants to make. All I'm saying is I'm thoroughly enjoy this year RWOA as it is extremely hilarious and informative.
So this film is essentially the anime film equivalent of EA's Star Wars Battlefront games, where the visuals are stunning but it can not save the overall product and it's just bad

I always called this movie a walking talking art book. All of your point are 100% correct, but for some reason I still had a good time watching the movie. Even though I had no idea what was going on.

i have seen this and this is my take. this is a movie that should have been a anime series. theres alot that is half way or not explained at all. they also go against what they have said a few times in this movie but... the overall story is worth watching. it is something that needs a reboot badly. another movie or a series wont help what they have done allready. i do think this is a watch just so you can see if its awfull or just a meh.
I agree. I constantly felt like I was missing half the story here. I kept wishing there was a Manga or prequel movie or something so I could have context for the story, because the first half was excellent. But it feels like everything just de rails in the third act and I ended up really confused by what was going on. Given more time, like with a show, I feel the core concepts and the subtext could have been better explained and the intentions this movie conveyed only partially could have had more attention. For example: the idea that cell phones are dangerous to the time travelers because pictures or texts could create a time paradox is brilliant, but the way this movie goes about conveying that makes it seem like the idea is actually that "cell phones are evil" when in fact the subtext was the complete opposite. Students who opposed the new rule had to be eradicated for the safety of the psychics. You can see this happen when the student council suddenly becomes more aggressive about the rule, to the point that one of the council members that isn't psychic loudly argues against such drastic measures and then suddenly moves away right after. To be honest, a 12 episode anime version that better fleshed out the concepts and fixed the messy direction could have been incredible, it's just a shame that it had to be so poorly condensed and that the visual storytelling is so sloppy.

So, as soon as you mentioned the "Cell Phones are Bad" thing, my brain immediately went "Is this an anime movie that's a recruitment effort for a cult, like Happy Science, or made because the director joined a Cult, like what happened with Earth Maiden Arjuna?" Unfortunately, I can't find anything to answer this question. Which is a shame, because while the film appears to have some dramatic thematic issues, it is definitely pretty.
EDIT: Also, the Japanese title translates as "Awakened School", which makes me think that the English Title of "Psychic School Wars" was chosen because that's what the Marketing Department told them would sell. (The same reason while the Marvel Comics event "Secret Wars" was called "Secret Wars").
Alexander Case, Yeah, often I face palm at the English titles that sometimes get chosen solely for the marketing. Then there are title translations that are just so lazy they loose the original meaning. I'd list off some examples, but I didn't bother remembering any of them.

I remember watching this movie a while back and forgot completely what it was about. I assumed it was a show about a time traveler stealing people and it was up to our reluctant heroes to save the day. But, then that bratty girl shows up to woo the time traveler and he had no personality and then things just happened.. IT WAS ABOUT PHONES?
I couldn't help but laugh at Superfluous Animation Overload, even though I like SAO. And that Meet the Heavy reference.
My guess is that this film was made as a resume for the animation studio. Something they can show to potential clients as demonstration of their abilities. Not to actually tell a story.
I really wanted to like this movie tbh. But I just can't. The longer I watch, the shittier it gets. I wanted like the romance but one is too cliche and the other one is... I don't get their relationship tbh. I wanted to like the plot but... "yeah, plot? Bish where? Oh those plots? Which one tho?" I wanted to like the animation but it really felt like the animation doesn't fit. Welp, I should've stopped watching after the first 2 mins of the movie cause that scene got me excited atleast. My first thought was..."orayt they're gonna be best bros and then like each other then get married" xD

Batmanisawesomesoami it's misleading because that's not even close to what the original title of the show is in Japanese. Hell it's not even AoT bad grammar, the original title should be translated to somewhere around the lines of "the school that was targeted"

Somebody wanted to have fun with animation, got their best friend to write a story and their cousin to spice it up and then acted it out in such a way that a company thought it was cool. Unfortunately, they were all drugged by some schoolkids from the future who wanted to stop the Evil Cellphone Rebellion of 2056 and figured an anime was the best way to go about it.

"Psychic school wars" sounds like the stand in preproduction name a company would put to a project before deciding the name or plot.
Like "High School Musical" but for animus like Asterisk War, High School DxD or HxH (not Hunter X Hunter).

I like the visuals but...holy hell,I didn’t even know what was happening and the characters and relationships sucked-
