It's simple really. There are no laws against killing in that country, hence the only way to make sure that you will not be killed is to be kind and not be an ass. Because yeah no law will protect anyone against being killed by you, which also means that there are no laws protecting you from being killed.

By making it such that the injunction against murder is kept on no law book, but on the hearts of the people, it ensures that murder will only be used as a preventative measure to keep the bad apples in check. Think of all the arguments the people against guns make, and realize that the places THEY live are often the most violent and deadly, while the people they denigrate live in places where violence is rare, and when guns are used against the innocent, more often then not the guns of the innocent are used against them in defense.
When those who would harm the public realize that they will be killed the moment they violently step out of line, they learn to either behave, or be removed. It's an entire nation run on the 'castle' doctrine.
I saw it more literally. The episode tells us that even if a country or city has a bad, sometimes dangerous reputation doesn't automatically make the general population bad or dangerous.

Well, also consider that a lot of the people who go there probably go there specifically go there to murder and take advantage of what looks like a lax law. Some of them probably make it out and then spread the idea that the country is more dangerous than it is. If you go there and just don't cause problems, you're probably gonna be fine.
This is where laws actually compliment social values which is the whole purpose of laws.
@Gage King The reason i said that was because it was a 100% agreement consensus. Not a majority and minority existence like the united states does. Which in turn creates tension' a good example was the previous election and current.
In reality there will be a lot of rival families, clan, or groups , and there will be a lot of civil war society will be messed up af Imagine How hard it is to have a job or even walk onto your nearest Walmart if that's the case
@@viktornikolayevich5933 if the law had been enforced impartially, then over a sufficiently long time the amount of murder will get saturated. Meaning those who perky wanted to kill be purged like in video. If one family/gang wanted to rule then they will be target of everyone else. Until the society is formed in the harmony that we see
But the question is can the law survive the turmoil times being impartial and if the people outlive the turmoil themselves.
Clearly this country is an example of a society which achieved it.

Never considered the citizens as cultists, seemed more like citizen soldiers or citizen police. Only problem would be what happens in private away from the public, then again that's already how things work.
The brilliant part is that its reputation encourages troublemakers into the open allowing for quick cleanup. It has to be almost routine for them.

@@shouldi9283 oh definitely, my point was simply that they're not doing it to have a sort of citizen police force but rather they made the rule with the intention that it would keep themselves and others in check, by knowing that if they accidentally slipped back into their old ways they'd be taken care of by their fellows.

It was nice allegory presenting that people don't need authorities. Because we are naturally social creatures that need to live in group.
Rules like:
-don't kill
-don't steal
-don't rape
-don't cheat
Those rules will exist in every society. People will instinctively form groups and societies. There will always be some law and order. Strict law, will not make citizens safer as rules like this will exist always.

In London's history, before the police, the city had a long policy to let the citizens help themselves. The idea was that when somebody did something criminal, the citizens would stop the criminal and handle the criminal themselves. But there were problems in that policy.

What an interesting country, but not that far off from many states in the US. I live in Iowa a stand your ground state that allows easy purchase and carrying of guns to defend yourself. I myself always carry a gun yet never want to shoot anyone but just like the people in the country wouldn't hesitate to if it was to defend someone or myself. While there are definitely nuances that make this country more safe and allow it to be different and perhaps safer from the US. Many things such as no trial or legal action for killing does certainly raise many questions about society and morals. What an interesting concept, its similar to our real lives yet it goes just a tad bit further.
The only real difference about this anime and the US is that Murder isn’t illegal, or at least “Not permitted”, the US is “prohibits Murder unless _____” Usually the blank is filled with Self defense.
Cept they do hesitate. Even in most 2nd Amendment state we still have mass shoots. A good guy with a gun is pretty much just a fantasy.
A judge is just a normal person like you and I that dresses himself up in spooks of authority. He is no more just than others, but has merely spent time following the dogmatic beliefs of the legalsystem.
@@konata736 not really since 3 million crimes are stopped each year by a person defending themselves with a gun. The media will never tell you that a lot of tragedies were stopped by weapons because that doesn’t fit the narrative.
@@supergamergrill7734 that number comes from an estimate published in 1995 by criminologists Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz. one of the big criticisms against this was that their estimate was over twice the number of people killed and/or treated for gunshots combined. Its a well known problem in Epidemiology that if somethings a rare event, and you just to ask how many people have done said thing, you'll get incredibly high overestimates.
Some dude paranoidly flashing his firearm at some dude crossing the street isn't "stopping a crime", for instance, but Kleck was still counting shit like that.
Of course, its hard to find evidence against gun ownership being good... but thats because since the mid 90's Congress has put restrictions in place that effectively block agencies from supporting gun-violence research.

I see this as a MAD(like the one between US and USSR) between every single citizen.
A town inhabited by former killers who wants a simple life, has a delicate and dynamic balance. When something crosses the line, everyone else crosses as well to kill the problem maker, making this a self rightening town, a system only possible because every single citizen is a retired killer, thus impossible to replicate in the real world.

Some home guard/militia units in Europe used to do that. Or you have some place out in the woods where the local platoon stores their stuff.
One of the ways to get illegal weapons in the 70's and 80's was to break open a home guar depot so they've moved from little concrete boxes to more central depots.
And rifles are heavy! People don't want to paint fences or pick apples with a rifle on the back day in and day out. A lot of these guys don't seem to own rifles either. But two dudes up in a window with crossbows is still pretty threatening.
If armies forage in a really hostile land, they had armed foraging parties. For every forager you have a few armed and armoured people who don't work but only work security.
Basically, be humble and respectful, don't commit any crimes, and don't disturb the peace.

Because when everyone has a deadly weapon and trained to use it, everyone has no choice but to be polite
Reaistically, it would be a nation where entire families, and their relatives, are slaughtered in blood feuds. And where people are killed over relatively small disagreements, before they can explain themselves. One good thing about courts and checks and balances, is that people can take their time to investigate fault, rather than jumping to conclusions, or being manipulated into a mob killing.
On that note, I'd like to see the mayhem that erupts when the mob disagrees, strongly, about whether to kill someone.
I like that self defense is taken as a personal responsibility and that the whole community takes up that responsibility, but I find it troubling that there is no court system.
Maybe, but I don't think it necessarily is the case that it would evolve into mass slaughter and blood feuds. That country is noted as being "Not very big", that along with each country in Kino no tabi being more akin to a city state would put that countrys population at maybe 10-100 thousand. I would guess that in that country everyone more or less knows everyone else. I also thinks the knowledge that everyone in the country caries weapons and coulld kill you without remorse, encourages diplomatic solutions.
If I were to kill someone, their friends, family, neighbors etc would come after me armed to the teath. That could as you say lead to blood feuds and clan wars. But i think the threat of complete anarchy is enough to keep the peace in this case. I also think that might be why they so fiercly protect the community from those that might do it harm.
It's not a perfect system and i don't think it would work in our modern society, but in a feudal/medieval one ... maybe.
@@blomman1719 Blood feuds were certainly a big factor in the number of homicides in ancient civilizations. That's why courts and laws were so important, so those who were wronged had a system to seek retribution instead of murdering an entire household.

I still fell like that country could work. BUT that depends on the people in it. In the end of the episode Kino meets a man that came from a violent country were he had been forced to kill in order to survive. A person that was tired of violence and just wanted a peaceful life. In a country full of people like that this might work.

As in, in ancient times it was more difficult to kill someone, like you had to be either strong or crafty to do so, and in inequal states between the familys they could think they would have no repercursions from killing or attempting to kill everyone, im not sure i explained myself too well, let me paint a picture
There are two families of 5, the first one only has one man, the second one has two men, the man from the first family killed one of the men of the second one, and in retaliation the other man from the second one killed the first man, and in a blood rage or whatever decided to kill the rest of the first family, and he can do so because the risk of repercursion is lower or minimal, since kids and women would be easier to kill than a fighting man (since men were seen as the capable to kill because of their strength)
In todays time we now have access to guns, which invalidate the strength requirement to kill someone, and thus killing is accesible to everyone, so now the man would have to weight the risk of any other member of the family fighting back, and short of being stupid, would probably decide against further action instead of just trying to kill everyone, if anything, he may not even kill the man out of fear of reprisals, hell, maybe there wouldnt havent been a murder at all
Of course my hypothetical is also an ideal scenario, maybe one member of any of the families is just crazy and just goes killing because it wants to, and maybe the other is too scared to fight back, but the existence of a mutual level of threat is already a good deterrent, like another comment said, this on a world scale already works and is the reason we have peace, i think at country level this wouldnt work because it needs a certain level of unity in society that is hard to maintain country wide, but in a town or city scale it probably could work well, since there is already a sense of unity just from seeing each other faces their whole lives
TLDR: i think the fact that murder is easier for everyone disuades one individual from killing, and if it were applied to ancient civlizations, a court system would not have existed since there would be no need for it, under threat of mutually assured destruction, people would naturally try to seek diplomatic solutions
This entire video is a textbook example of why the American Second Amendment is so important, it enables you to protect yourself and those around you.

I just want to know if I can tell my neighbours not to do little nuisance things. Can I tell a bloke to not feed a bear or divert rainwater and the many other little ease-of-life laws we got.
I'd like to think that there's specific rules genetically engraved into our systems. Basic rules of living you know? Don't touch the giant cat that can rip your arm off. Don't walk off of cliffs, shit like that. 😅

I feel other ppl might agree and its a good thing sounds like peace to others but as i see how about false accusation? Yes they can think as one as citizens but criminality is also flexible how about a citizen moved in and then town trusted him/her until she was keeping a secret to do bad things like kill someone without revealing him/herself. Of course ppl will estimate and think by votes and one but i can assure not all of em are verry smart to pin point out the suspect that may lead to start againt false accusation then kill them until the crime is continuing. Ppl might get insanity barely accusing everyone. Ever heard of salem history and old europe where witch beliefs exist, the results of their actions might be similar to this.

Love the plot tho but i just pointed out for those who thinks that its ideal town but for me maybe they were in a trajedy before making themselves into this situation but good, bad; right, wrong; true, false; should , and shouldnt are just moral ambiguity and flexible not enough to justify an action hence its not peace at all. It looks like they have an informal leadership. The little old "alderman" that sits down to have a chat with Kino. Clans and village sociteties often have informal or consensus-backed leaders. You got your council of family elders, your local reeve, the alderman etc.
True that the real life examples of dark ages and salem witch trials happened with mob lynching happened when people tries to enforce their own morality.
But here, everyone's a retired killer. No one's good and everyone' a witch except their own perceived ideal of 'goodness'.
Instead, it seems more like a typical society where your own safety is your own responsibility and the person with the faster reflex wins or the one with a larger group wins or the one who gets away with it wins kind of deal.

I feel like the town knows that they are able to kill each other with no consequences but just don't do it. Why? Well they all know each other really, but for travellers they would always take that opportunity to kill someone. And if the town sees someone try to do it, they'll basically just kill them.
All in all, shut up and don't try to find the loophole in situations.
This episode reminds me of Hercule Poirot, Murder on the orient express.
Thats a big over simplification. The killer here didn't kill anyone yet or know the group plus in the book the guy was murdered in the night not in broad daylight.

Just because you could kill someone doesn’t mean you should. It’s like saying you can yell in public but you don’t have to because you know it isn’t necessary to yell in public. Also everyone has a weapon and has knowledge of how to kill another person. So in a weird way they understand each other and are able to come to an equal ground.
Their only law is, "Get off of mah lawn!"
This reminds of the way death is viewed in the John Wick universe. It’s nothing personal and it can happen to anyone at any time and if you don’t respect the rules, it certainly will happen to you.
This also goes into great detail about the mindset of legalizing guns in general. Guns were made to kill people better, faster, and more efficiently. But now that war is over, guns are either a recreational use, such as a fun time at the shoot range, or home defense, and self defense.
If America was a country where guns were fully legal, and in the situation that everyone had one, and knew the safety of handling one. A person like the one mentioned in the video, wouldn't have the chance to misuse it. But, we are humans, and we are far from perfect, so this fictional piece doesn't hold up in reality. Maybe in a small town, but that's all I'm seeing that this would actually work.
The world works on this idea though. Everyone in the high forms of government has nuclear weapons that could wipe millions of people off this earth, and that weapon is why we all live in peace today, because if anyone caused a ruckus, or tried anything dastardly, the entire world could fall into a nuclear winter.
the world of kino in some form is kinda alternate reality of that. kinos world as you watch/read of each city its heavily hinted a world war did happen long ago (if correct approx 100-120 years ago in that sea city and the AI governing it told about it.) that it caused alot of damage and ppl were scare. the cities with large walls, mobile or hidden were made to protect the ppl and stand off against potential invaders. each city in its history were built on any inventions/experiments formed like kino home city. ppl were at the start of being a teen are urged to go through a surgery to be a "respectable" adult but its actually (if using term right) lobotomizing them to be obedient and follow orders by who ever in charge. this assumes the city long ago forced civilians to become obedient solders, follow the commander and die even if say the commander order you to jump into a mine field. the AI floating city existed to get the children long ago during the war away from it with plans to return and drop them off but the children that became adults became to reliant on the AI and decide to stay even though the war is over. the AI program to keep them safe decides so be it let them stay and hundred years later the city is decaying and one day those ppl will drown and die.
some of them are good, bad, advance, still old fashion or even futuristic depending on the knowledge and resources they city had from the war years and develop it when it ended. the world is filled with the unknown, terrifying, wonderful sights and discovery. its peaceful but deadly at the same time with anything can be out of the ordinary (like the battle sheep) to perfect clear day. its reason this world setting ppl liked about it and hopefully see more of it either novel, manga and anime. or with trend now these days in america if get license to make a live action series on netflix or another at least make it an anthology series with each episode the viewer is unprepared to see what is shown and goes down in this world.

@@ZackTanTYZ it depends of what good intentions means, there are a lot of genocides started with the best intentions for a country, a group, a religion.
And that's why you can't make it fully legal. You said this: Guns were made to kill people better, faster, and more efficiently.
The situation that everyone had one and knew the safety of handling one, is a fantasy scenario, also you can't expect that everyone have the value of a peaceful life or good intentions.
And also, we have the nuclear weapons, but we understanded what a threat was just after being used againts people. That form of terror and war crimes is what stopped the world to fall into another war, not the weapon itself. The delusion was how the goverments keept improving a way to destroy us all, afecting more innocent people in the way.
In that fear of the destruction of humanity, Gojira was born as a protest againts proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Most of the population has them, but the few can't get them because of an allergy. I assure you, that most people can be educated on proper gun safety, and understand it. Most people wouldn't even get the chance to use it on another person. Again, it's a fear tactic. 'Don't endanger the lives around you, and your life won't be in danger.'
Your opinion of the average person is quite low, and I don't think you are giving them the benefit of the doubt. How can you say that the 'majority'of people do not have good intentions, and proper testing can rule those people out.
Your take on nuclear weapons being a different example than guns isn't set on a solid foundation. People are well aware already even without training on how dangerous a gun can be when used.
The criteria that would be hard to implement is choosing people who would use it correctly and completely. Which those who have a complete control of their emotions. One example is marines, but even them don't always have the best intentions.
It can happen in steps. Half the people who are responsible with weapons will make up the first wave. And the second wave will introduce more people, with more lenient tolerance of the emotional of the group, but still strict. The third group will have the same training as what is going on today with gun control.
Robbers, or terrorists, school shooters. Won't have the idea of trying anything, and if they do. The people won't allow it.
Plus I believe that it will have an added effect, of the government actually doing what is responsible, because the nation will now be armed.
The concept of unjustly sentencing people, bills that take advantage of others instead of benefitting all. Companies selling a product that doesn't even work. Critical race theory being taken out of schools.
People who have malicious intentions of hurting others, physically, or through our own system will decrease. It's as close to a utopia, and country or county peace as you can get.
I know one thing. That America is the only country that can make it happen.

The reason I enjoyed this series so much is because Kino’s Journey explores sociology and philosophy so deeply, without relying on a lot of other elements. It’s a good anime to just sit back with, relax, watch, and think.

I always kind of thought that the people liveing there were people for one reason or another came from rough circumstances like the gladiator. Thy Came from a background were thy had no choice but to kill or hurt to survive, or maybe they had enjoyed it in the past, but came to regret their actions later in the future. A broken kind of town we’re thy have been in those situations and expenced first hand the harshness of killing but necessity of being able to protect yourself and your own peace. Thuse thy created a town where they could protect themselves and had an understanding with each other that the others would do the same and help protect them if they were put in a bad situation again.
Yes . This shows us laws dont create lawlessness in any country but it is the the citizens moral principles that matters the most.
This country is the definition of "read the fine print"
The society is interesting to me the way they interact and live. They are fine with it. There no person trying to stroke a flame. Occasionally they just need to deal bad apples that come into town.
It would absolutely suicide for someone to make an enemy of these people.
I've always felt that this style of law is basically just the people taking protection into their own hands. Criminals will be criminals. They'd kill regardless. So it's almost an unspoken rule of safety for the people, you just have to be willing to step up to the killing bat. Of course though everything has its pros and cons. Anyone want to chip in to make a list of such pros and cons?

You don't have a weapon that can kill TO kill people. You do it because the future is a scary, potentially dark place, that you might have to choose between an innocent and a monster. What person would choose the innocent to die? You MIGHT be able to prevent an innocent person's life. And that chance is more than enough reason for me. It could be my mother. Or yours. Or brother, father, son, why should they die because I refused to be able to protect them? This is why the Founding Father's gave us American's that inherited right, because they saw horrible things happen to their own people by the ones who said they shouldn't be able to defend each other. They dreamt of a country so united, all states would be as family, where people could do as they do in Kino's Journey, and never have to wait for the cops to "legally" kill someone while innocents die.
These people just want to live a life. Anyone that causes chaos (specific types) die.
You know what’s scary your dealing with a group of people always analysing and judging whether you friend or foe. They don’t need to worry about each other they are more focus on you whether your a danger to the whole. To pity that you had to be killed for being dangerous and how your home society created a danger. God the children probably take pride in that. From there childhood to trust your people and equally judge new people.

This episode makes it simple by writing up the easiest, most obvious villain possible. The man is not hiding his intent. He is pulling out a firearm in the middle of the street, in broad daylight. There is no need to investigate him or any need for resources to pursue him outside the town border.
The scourge of early towns and cities was pickpockets, highwaymen, burglars. We don't get to see how much of the road the town militia can police.
These guys at least take an interest in new arrivals and it seems like they keep an eye on Kino. The "alderman" she talks with sounds like he has gathered enough background from the other villagers and wants an excuse for a face-to-face meeting for last.

The warrior concept had always been quite peculiar to me since childhood as even though killing is bad we somehow say it is terrible if done by individuals
Living in Singapore where we need to serve two years of our time as conscript we were told if something bad happen we will need to kill others . But outside of military we were told that murder is bad.
Fighting for survival doesnt necessarily means it is a good thing as well.
Well, the practicality of the job and the actual benefit of a soldier aside. Whethet murder is allowed or not really depends on culture and the state of the society they in isnt it.
The human psyche need to demonize and dehumanize others to murder another. Even killing animals is hard for some while easy for others.
Economics, social values, market demands, limitation of resources are all factors that push people to kill. And human as a whole is malleable, they get use to things even in the worse of situation...if they survive haha

its all well and good if all the citizens are a hive mind, but human individuality will eventually disagrees maybe not their current generation but the next or the next, and soon, if if boy from family A had a disagreement with boy in family B, and it escalated to a point where boy A kills boy B, vengence will soon come upon boy A, from boy B's family members..and if both families have friends it will be all out blood feud or blood war, where each side wants to eradicate the other, since killing is legal, and killing for protection and for pre-supposed justice is allowed, nobody will stop both families in enforcing their own justice upon the other, and again their friends will join in the war of eradication, and even if you have successfully eradicated family A, their friends that joined would have had their own vengence to take upon their own loses in the war, and the cycle continues, this is what our modern laws is trying to prevent by making killing ill legal..
The only possible solution, even though it sounds horrible, would be to vanish both families from the country, without the root of the disaster, the other citizens will have not conflict at all.

Early european cities used vigilantes under variations of hue and cry. If you see a crime, you and the local citizenry are supposed to grab the dude collectively and pull him to the alderman. If it is a capital crime it might get pushed up to government courts but you can handle small stuff yourself. The old man here looks like your typical alderman or reeve with the informal backing of his town.
The limit to the system was scale and increasingly sophisticated crime. Townies have their day job to do, they can't be out on the road patrolling for highwaymen. Investigating a crime is hard, even if the "alderman" here is doing a nice checkup on Kino.
This is exactly what America should have been

This scene is horribly contrived, there are numerous opportunity for ian to save or defend himself and kill at least a few of his murders before he died. But instead they make him incompetent, why would he not immediately run after the arrow shot his arm, who wouldn't immediately grab the gun with your other hand and take cover to return fire. This scene is too stupid to exist naturally, it's far to conceivable that ian would go on a killing spree in the town given the proliferation of weapons, especially with some being near silent, that would have been a far better end for this town

The simple fact that things in a society that have a strong effect on individuals are far away from the control of individuals (e.g. Deflation which in turn can have effects on the decision making of employers to not employ or fire their employees which in turn means that these now jobless people can't afford food anymore) is enough to disprove this.
