Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, better known as BPPV, can literally stop you in your tracks. Make sure you are properly diagnosed because the symptoms can be something more serious and dangerous if not properly diagnosed.
The first exercises are called Brandt-Daroff exercises. Start in an upright, seated position. Then move into a lying position on one side with your nose pointed up at about a 45-degree angle. Stay in this position for about 30 seconds (or until the vertigo subsides, whichever is longer). Then move back to the seated position and stay for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. This should be done 5 times, 2 times a day holding each position for 30 seconds.
The next set of exercises are called Gaze Stabilization exercises. Keeping your head in one spot, move your eyes side to side as smoothly as you can 10 times. Then move them up and down 10 times. Next move them at a diagonal 10 times one way, and then 10 times the other way. You might get some symptoms while doing this, but if you can keep moving them, the symptoms should go away.
Finally, you are going to move your head, but keep your eyes focused on one spot. Hold out your finger in front of you, or put an X or A, or any letter on a piece of paper on the wall. While focusing on the one spot, move your head side to side as smoothly as you can 10 times. Then move it up and down 10 times. Next move it at a diagonal 10 times one way, and then 10 times the other way.

I am a truck driver and I woke up in Tuesday morning with vertigo. Having never heard of it in the past it scared me real bad! I laid there for four hours and it only seemed to get worse. Not being from the area I was at I was forced to call 911. They did all the tests to rule out all the other things then said I had BPPV.. Now the hospital never tried any excercises but pumped me with medicine for the dizziness and nausea and headache that is associated with it. I suffered from 7 AM all day until it finally subsided about 4 PM. They released me Wednesday and instructed me to follow up with my doctor. I was still having issues with dizziness but no where nearly as bad as Tuesday. Today is Friday and I was still having dizziness, I did a couple different excercises including yours and my dizziness went away. Knowledge rocks!! Thank you!

Thank you so much for the exercise instruction!!! I had to try for a while before I think it worked.....for me I got up out of bed and grabbed two brooms to use as canes and started walking baby steps!!! Believe it or not, it started getting easier and easier as I went!!! At the start I couldn't move my head at all and only a few steps at a time. Very slowly I gained confidence and started walking faster with more slight head movements!!! Very slowly it got easier and easier!!! I went from being scared to stand for longer than 5 seconds to walking, fast walking, jogging and jogging while moving my head!!!!!! I put 11 kilometers on in one evening ( 4 hours steady). At the end I had walk/jogged 6 out of the 11 kilometers!!!! Now when I went into the house and settled down for a while...I got up and felt a bit dizzy again,...but not like before.!!!!
The next day I went walking again, doing what I did the day before and guess what???? No dizziness!!!!
The ABSOLUTE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS REST AND LAY DOWN!! WITH THAT BEING SAID....DON'T JUST GET UP AND RUN!!! MAKE YOURSELF SAFE TO MOVE AROUND AND EXERCISE TO YOUR ABILITIES!! HAVE SOMEONE HELP YOU WALK AROUND AND BE THERE FOR YOU.......BUT DON'T JUST LAY DOWN AND WORRY!!! THERE IS AN END TO THIS CONDITION!!! You will see once you start moving around and don't be discouraged if it doesn't happen right now!!! It will come....!!!! For me it took a week before I was driving around and eating normal again.....hope this helps at least one person....cheers all!!

@@violinistas3766 I am deaf on left ear so I know this is mainly the cause of my vertigo and I have stopped using my hearing aids. For my case, it’s positional vertigo nowadays. Happens when I lie down or wake up suddenly and it sucks. It’s sometimes when I sleep on my left, right or center of the back of my head. Haven’t had vertigo for a while or they just disappear suddenly. Forgot that I need to be careful when I lie down or wake up because it’s my main trigger.

I know how it feels to have a Vertigo. 😭 It really sucks because you can't do the chores or tasks that you need to do and it's hard to concentrate. It can make you feel sad and depress sometimes and you get discourage. But let's fight this! We must fight this feeling of being sad and depressed because it can also trigger the Vertigo. We will be healed guys. It just takes time. We can fully recover from this. I do this exercise but sometimes i forgot. I stopped taking meds for dizziness because i am also scared of relying always on meds because of side effects.

I don’t wanna speak too soon, but I see progress after doing this exercise. Wish I tried it sooner, but I was just too scared. I saw a similar trick in another video, but I’ll stick to this one because it’s much simpler and I noticed a difference after doing it. I’ll post any progress during day two, thanks so far Doc

Thankyou Dr Jo. I have had 3 bouts of severe vertigo the second I went to hospital with hours of room spinning crazily and vomiting violently multiple times. It was like a torture and so debilitating. I used your exercises yesterday and it was a big help. I no longer feel so powerless.

    Thanks for these clear exercises.
I have benign positional vertigo and it sucks.
Mine isn't really a spinning. It more of a slow powerful torque.
Puts me on the deck in seconds if I don't feel it coming.
If you don't already, keep some candied ginger handy.
Get it at your health food store. It's an acquired taste, but it really helps.
Also get rid of as much sodium and caffeine as you can.
Mine is getting the upper hand again.
Need to do some of your exercises.

Your exercises helped me! I've had vertigo episodes off on on for many years. A couple nights ago my left ear was a little sore so I used 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to clean my ear. As a result the next morning I woke up with vertigo. I don't plan on doing that ever again. Thank you so much for making this video!

May I ask how long I need to keep doing these exercises? I have done them everyday for 8 weeks x 2 a week. I was hoping with time I wouldn't have to do them and my brain would learn to rebalance 😊

Seriously, Dr. Jo. You want me to take advice from someone with a South Carolina gamecock banner on your couch? Just kidding, I graduated from the U. Of South Carolina in 1980. Great advice, as it has helped my BPPV, and Go Gamecocks. God bless you for caring enough to do this video.

Thank you so much. I've been dealing with this for a few years now and always gone back to my ENT hearing him say 'if this continues I'll teach you the exercises!' Why not there and then teach me! Thank you for this video. I will try the exercises and keep looking on youtube for others like I remember him making me move for the Ethlene? Manoever... I really hope this works. :)

Sorry Jo, we have no proof that Brandt Daroff is a preventative measure. As the cause of BPPV is still largely unknown one cannot do excercises to keep it away.

These exercises look like the ones I first did when I first got diagnosed with BPPV,it’s come back to me now watching how she did them in this video. My doctor said you get BPPV from either after a cold or rushing around too much which I can do at times.
I’m so at ease coming across this video after trying so many other exercises that confused me.

Thank you Dr. Jo. I had my first experience with vertigo that started 3 days ago. I was nauseated and I vomited. I was so off balance and everything was spinning constantly except when I closed my eyes. I got relief when I was sleeping or closing my eyes. I found your video and did them last night before bed and again this morning. I am hoping they work and I’ll continue to do these as a daily exercise. I woke up today with way less dizziness. Thank you for sharing.
