DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

We are aware people want another place to vote for the next Pokemon but we want the voter to at least have a YT account. This is why we don't just do strawpolls since one can just refresh and vote again.
We will either:
A. Try to post a Pinned comment right as the video is released for viewers to comment on and vote (We would have done this earlier but we schedule every upload and YT doesnt let us make comments on a scheduled video until it's released for some reason.)
Or
B:
Make a post in the community tab where you can all comment there for the next one.
Let us know whichever one is more preferable or if there's other external solutions. We want to keep it within UA-cam as much as possible though.
Thanks for reading!

How BAD was Rayquaza actually??

Fun fact about beedrill: Thank to an oversight, BD was the only pokemon that could poison steel types in gen 2(barring that painting pokemon). Steel type avoided the poison status by being immune to poison moves but there was no code to prevent the status. Twinneedle was, of course, the only non-poison move that poison. So technically, Beedrill had corrosion five gens before Salandit and Salazzle.
Oh wow
The more you know🌈
That’s a neat fact
@Aqua fn Actually no. Twinneedle could not poison poison types in gen one. Some clever person notice and added an extra rule to prevent this. Then Steel was added and that person must of taken a sick day since the same exception was missing from the new type.
I will have to try this
Mega Beedrill has the same Attack stat as groudon.
But it also has the same Special Attack as magikarp.

@@cober5768 I do the same in FR/LG. He's actually not bad at all considering his move pool. And tbh, I even used it vs Brock just to see if I could. I could. @@FraserSouris Overused is considered the cream of the crop when it comes to non-legendary pokemon. The best of the best. As FSG himself said himself, is says a heck of a lot the people used Bedrill in that environment at all.
Every pokemon in OU is supposed to be between great and amazing, that's why it's called overused. As such, saying Bedrill is okay for falling short of it is a bit harsh.
Fraser Souris you’re just wrong here. You can roughly equate the tiers to quality.

Mega Beedrill is the main reason why i love mega evolutions.
Despite the crap and complaints most Pokemon who got Mega's tend to need them due to slipping on the competitive scene. Some even turned weak Pokemon to just straight up broken.
@@xo-1320 I think megas are one of Game Freak's best ideas. They breathed new life into old Pokemon and introduced an interesting new mechanic to battles. It's a good sign that everyone wants their favorite Pokemon to get a mega. No one says "Dunsparce needs a signature Z-Move."
@@natekite7532
Signature Z-moves are a bit dumb if you ask me. I think just having the type based moves are a good idea. Them, regional variants and Megas are each good additions. (Though a few Pokemon could also use an evolution or two)

How GOOD was Pinsir ACTUALLY?
Truthfully, Pinsir was another one of those Pokemon that was never really any good until it got a Mega Evolution. It has no STAB to speak of in gen1 (and bug was the single worst type in the game), it didn't get a good one until gen4, and even then, it still wasn't very good. From about gen3 forward, one big flaw it had was that pretty much everything it could do, Heracross did better. It's mega, though, did wonders to make it actually viable, partially because it got a STAB priority move to spam.

We need more Mega Evolutions for bad Pokemon like Ledian, Wigglytuff and Mightyena to atleast breathe in new life for these bad mons like what they did for Beedrill, Mawile and Lopunny.
Its dissapointing that already good Pokemon like Salamence and Tyranitar have Megas, and in Garchomp's case, actually make something worse than the original.
Mega Ledian would be pretty cool, but Game Freak has seemed to drop the idea of Megas, which is disappointing

I remember when I had me a Beedrill as one of the first Pokémon (outside of my starter) to use mega evolution in ORAS. It had an Adamant nature, and was literally a beast to anything I put it up against, even if it didn't outright take it out. I didn't and still don't know much about IVs and EVs, but that didn't really matter with super training. It had a move pool of Poison Jab, X-Scizzor, Protect (from when it was a Kakuna) and U-Turn.
One day I learned while using Beedrill that by using protect when it mega-evolved, it would allow it's stats to boost from it's base to its mega-form stats. In short, I was able to get Beedrill up and going by always using it during/after the transformation.
If I ever play a Pokémon game again, I hope mega-evolutions will make a big return (along side the super training, because that s*** was beyond incredible), because I know for sure that Beedrill will remain my go-to for a mega-evolver.
side note: funny enough, I hate/fear and avoid large bugs in real life, but I'd definitely have Beedrill (or Heracross) as my buddy in the Pokémon world. Pokémon like Beedrill (like Arbok, for example) are awesome in their own right.

Nah, we must wait until 2021, so he can talk about its gigantamax
@@ElementalArcher lol they are banned
@@aaryayt7747 not in vgc
Beedrill is a good example of a Mega done right. Used to revitalize a Pokemon that, as far as popularity and usage, was pretty much dead, and done so effectively. I would love to see others of its kind receive a similar buff.
Happy 2019 False Swipe! Hope you had an awesome New Year and thanks for the vid of the not-so-killer Mega Bee 😊😊😊
How GOOD was Mightyena ACTUALLY? next please?
Thanks for yet another awesome vid False Swipe =^_^=
How good was Torterra actually?
I have made good on my promise.
YES
PLEASE
YES
How BAD was Torterra ACTUALLY
How GOOD was Shedinja ACTUALLY! Let's start off this year with a real pokemon!
Glad they helped one of my favorite bug type Pokémon of all time:)
An Aggron video would sure be swell! I would love to see Aggron's competitive history!
Finally! I was one of the people asking for this since the beginning. I always loved beedrill because it just seems really cool. I hated how weak it was, it just seemed to not fit. Mega beedrill is even cooler and actually can back it up.
"Why does universe hate Waspinator... wait I mean Beedrill?"
I mean, its shiny looks like waspinator, so technically you're not wrong
"Oh, no. NO need to help Beedrill. Beedrill gets himself to the Pokemon Center(!)"
The best nickname for Beedrill is Vespiking
Watching this video after Sword and Shield's release makes Beedrill's viability in the competitive scene all the more tragic, lol
Happy 1 year anniversary of this video
How GOOD was Miltank ACTUALLY? #DairyTroupe
How good was Rotom actually?
PLS
trt 001 Which one?
I'm thinking the forms will all need their separate video
Gen 4 they all were pretty similar and in future gens most dropped in usage, only Wash really went on to greatness still living in OU
Two videos:
How good was Rotom-wash actually?
How good were all the others forms?
Beedrill is one of my faves so it was nice to see it be pretty good for a bit! True underdog material.
You still own Us Butterfree, after this Beedrill video 🦋
Just a couple short remarks about gens 1 and 2 competitive:
- while Smogon didn't exist in the late 90s and early 2000s, there were simulators and an active online competitive scene. Porygon's Big Show, an RBY simulator, dates from about 2000 and can still be found online, and old forums/fansites like Pokémasters and Azure Heights, which housed a lot of competitive discussion, were the direct ancestors of today's communities like Smogon. While it took awhile for standards to settle (such as banning evasion), the metagame as played then did resemble modern gens 1 and 2 in most important ways, and the information you'll read on Smogon and Pokémon Perfect about gens 1 and 2 is based on competitive experience dating back to the 90s (in other words, while the Nintendo Cup information is interesting too, the modern analyses are relevant too, and needn't be ignored for historical accuracy)
- if you do want the best angle on modern gen 1, you should go to the Pokémon Perfect forums, where more gen 1 players organize and which have more up-to-date articles on gen 1 Pokémon listed under "Individual Analyses" (for instance, going by Smogon analyses you might think the choice between Golem and Rhydon is a coin flip, but in fact Rhydon is considered to be much better in today's metagame)
I know this is a year old but I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. This is really informative and interesting.
Yo I feel like the patrons are actually trying to kill this series lately
UA-cam comment requests are all the same things. At least the Patrons are more creative and entertaining with their picks.
@@gengarzilla1685 I disagree, but ok
THANK YOU. YOU FINALLY DID BEEDRILL
Feels good watching it after exactly 2 yrs
BTW, Beedrill is my absolute favourite pokemon ✨
...
Are we gonna ignore that MEGA BEEDRILL has 15 SpA?!
DuskiiRose Why would you use it’s special attack?
It's called minmaxing. Hasnt Beedrill almost always been a physical type Pokemon? Even before the split in gen 4 Bug type moves were Physical. As was Sludge Bomb IIRC. What goof is having SpA if it's best STAB moves are/have always been Physical?
Time to run special attacking Mega Beedrill bois
@@niki75 poison was physical before gen 4 as well.
@Ghoul Gaming Did you forget about Gigantamax Butterfree?
*How good was Celebi actually*
My first pokenon blue play through I had a bee drill till the very end. Sure it got one shorted a lot but I never gave up on it. Bee drill is one of my favorite pokemon.
I will never forget the time I had a slightly underleveled normal Beedrill one-shot Diantha's Mega Gardevoir with Poison Jab.
