So in short, Unown was one of the best and most versatile Pokemon the competitive scene has ever known, so much so that the people at Smogon were so terrified of it that they put it in the lowest tier every generation to trick people into thinking it can't do anything.
Of course...a team of 4 could spell out "DOOM" for your opponent and 5 even "FINAL" to win the duel automaticly....and don't let me start on "EXODIA".

TheTrueLeafless one of unowns ability was called “YOUGAY”. If a team of 6 unown spelled out YOUGAY, the opponent would be mentally fucked. It failed if the opponent was Gay, Bi, or any other sexuality.

It should be noted why unown fell to nu and then pu.
In gen 2, Unown had few consistent counters. Sure if you know the type of hidden power, you could easily beat him, but competent players would do their best to hide that info until the best time. That said, porygon and its evolution became the only TRUE counters thanks to their unique mover of conversion 2 transforming them into a resistant type. Thankfully porygon 2 was trapped in ou and porygon sucked, but gen 3 was not so kind.
Gamefreak, realizing the monster they created, made a specific counter that unown user could never hope to beat. Kecleon.
He had huge special defense, normal typing and an ability to change types no longer needed to waste a movie slot to be unown. Even more, they made its other stats subpar so it wouldn't be condemned to the upper tiers like porygon 2.
When ever unown started to rampage, that damn lizard would rise to drag him back down. Not even escaping into pu helped since kecleon followed him. Clearly, his only value in nu was the unown countering.
Hidden Power Dragon or Hidden Power Ghost (if hit previously by non normal type move) would be easy counters to Kecleon
So they failed at creating a counter to unown until Gen 6 when Protean came out

Only reason why unown only used hidden power, was because all of it's other moves were too powerful for the meta.
You have Unown curse, Which makes all of the opponent's Pokémon faint, Unown Banish, Which Gets rid of all other trainers, Which allows you to insta win, And Unown's revenge, Which If hit, guarantees you win the next five battles.

And in gen 10 with the X and Y remakes: Unown was given a mega evolution and a signature ability to boot.
Ultra Hidden Power: Makes Hidden Power always STAB. Also, Hidden power will always change to a type that's super effective, and if hidden power becomes a type that is 4x super effective, it gains the pursuit effect.

You didn't mention the HP nerf in Gen VI meaning that Unown lost about 15% of its attacking power as HP's base damage is now 60
In my opinion, GSC Unown was outclassed by Pinser, who could run all of Unown's powerfull sets with the added utility of Sword's Dance and RestTalk. However, Pinser would have to sacrifice the STAB from HPbug to use most of them, so they were about equally good.
