DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for singles and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6 and 7, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Imma just leave this here: how tf do we go from rock w arms, rock w 4 arms, to a lizard stuck in a rock? This isn't discussed enough 😤
And now Golem is in Gen 1 NU, because someone had to quadruple check how body slam paralysis works
It's funny how common he was in Gen 1 and how overlooked it was in Gen 2, and now it's exactly other way around. Either way, Gen 2 is def the best for Golem due to how omnipresent Spikes is and due to how good Explosion is too.

Ouch. I mean, I've always preferred Rhydon because it never needed to blow up, but ouch.
This video should have been titled "How BAD was power creep fro Golem ACTUALLY?".
@@XCodes The saddest part of all is that technically it still has potential. Ground and Rock are a great offensive combo that hits the major threats hard. But the meta has shifted to where any pokemon with this stab combination needs speed and power over defenses. If any Rock/Ground pokemon want to be relevant now, they need to be speedy sweepers.

...then again.
Opening in Awe rock lizard? Onix? Isn’t part of golem evolution line
i remember as a kid learning for the first time that onix wasn't the evolved form of geodude
many of the gen 1 evolution lines felt inconsistent in a similar manner - like for example Squirtle -> Wartortle -> Blastoise - for some reason Squirtle gains a bushy tail tail and ears.... than loses them and instead evolves into having short stubby tail and ears and water cannons protruding out of it's shell - I know there's a background in japanese mythology with Wartortle's looks, but still the design of the evolution just goes into a completely different direction from the middle stage which has always disturbed me
Technically, not a lizard, but a golem... it's given turtle like looks because it can get inside itself and role as a bolder...
He was a ROCK... LIZARD!
Wow, I thought Alolan Golem was terrible, but it has certainly contributed to the argument: "not all of OU is OU." The fact that it checks a lot of Pokémon that are hard to get around, especially Magearna and Heatran, makes me look at it in better light.
CritsuKirby I think it's the only Untiered with a niche in OU.
@@fulgenzio89
There is Camerupt, whose Mega is banned from NU, but the base form is untiered. But since Megas are considered their own Pokémon in Smogon, you're correct.
@@fulgenzio89 Ditto is actually the most notable untiered mon with OU usage
Most low tiered Pokemon that are viable in OU are not "good". They have niches, some very important, that make them viable.
e.g. Pyukumuku, Ribombee, Avalugg, Quagsire, Quilfish, Gastrodon, and as someone else mentioned, Ditto.
If you're interested you can go read some of these analyses. They really show off how complex and creative competitive Pokemon can become.
@@nickcostanza8730 Never have i seen a ditto on a serious OU team. Its stat is really sad, so even if it transform into another OU mons, i doubt that it would pull off something spectacular.
Quick update for future viewers: turns out, in gen1 normal types can't be paralyzed by Body Slam. That change made Chansey and Snorlax almost mandatory with reflect, so now Explosion Golem isn't nearly as useful. This made it completely outclassed by Rhydon, so it dropped to UU. But UU is filled with water types and Golem doesn't do anything since it is too slow and ended in NU. Yeah...

Man, poor Golem. What bugs me it's most of sets had "Sucker Punch" on it. You know how difficult is getting one of those these days? Sucker Punch was a tutor move on POKEMON PLATINUM! You have to send a 4th gen Golem all the way to Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, and Smogon had the move on all sets too.
In Mew video Softboiled, tutor move from generation 3, was established to be mandatory in every gen.

All right kids, say it with me:
GIVE BACK RAPID SPIN TO GOLEM
You can get it in later games via Gold and Silver Virtual Consoles. Just transfer it over using Pokemon Bank. :3
No you can't. Rapid Spin was an event-only move, so it's impossible to get a Rapid Spin Golem from the VC games
It would be really interesting to see both forms get Rapid Spin. The Alolan form could theoretically pair it with Galvanize to not get spinblocked by Ghost types.
Yeah it'd be blocked by Ground types instead, but hey, discard and draw.
I honestly don't get why Golem didn't have rapid spin normally.
It makes total sense that it would have it.
The Cartridge Tilter I know right!
Golem will forever have a special place in my heart because of its ability to perform in cute and beauty contests in ORAS 😊

That OU niche for Alola-Golem was awesome. Had no idea it could work like that! Definitely something for me to consider on my next OU teambuild.
Much like Tauros and Exeggutor, Golem's history is the sad tale of a once-great Pokemon that just couldn't keep up with the times. At least its Alolan form has some use in OU, though.

i'd love to see you do a video doing an overview of the general competitive landscape throughout the years. You've covered a lot of it multiple times throughout this series, but having a dedicated video would be really entertaining, and a great tool for people who might be interested in some of the older metas
I was kind of salty seeing a Golem video, since I always liked every trade evolution in gen 1, but I didn't always have someone to trade with.
I've beaten games with Graveler so it's not that bad.
Golem was the first pokemon I obsessed over, because it was the only time I got my cousin to trade with me on link cable so I could get one lol. After that playthrough ive never had a traded evolution in those games again
Trade evolutions are a bad idea in the first place. It alienates people who cannot do them. The games are still playable without those few Pokemon that can. But I've always loved Scizor and especially since its mega... Yet I've never ever had one.
@@gamermanzeake Well if you have a 3ds and one of the newer games you could always trade a scyther online. I could always trade with you if you'd like.

Thank you for showcasing Golem after all this time. I remember using Golem a lot on my teams in Gen 1. I nearly had the same moveset as shown. I had Earthquake, Rockslide, Explosion and Mega Punch. Really good to use on my teams. I also used Rock Polish in the later gens to get a lower tier agilityGross type poke with Golem.
0:25 Look up the Machoke trading with Graveler DNA mixup theory!!
I think its what Graveler got from Machoke in the trade. (Hence Machoke suddenly having four arms post trade evo, while Graveler loses two of his original four arms in the trade, as an example.)
Golem was that pokemon which i really liked the design but could never get in the games as a kid since i had no one to trade with, and then it got outclassed when i could actually get it ^^
I've found ways to make it work regardless, it still kicks ass and takes names
@@EmperorDionx yeah but usually when playing a new game now i try to use the new pokes and not always my gen 1-3 favourites (Let's Go was an exception of course). I love this series so much
Golem will come back to Gen 1 OU one day, I promise

finally guys we did it, after 112 weeks
I think the rivalry between Golem and Rhydon in gen 1 was a great thing
Been waiting over a year for this, I can finally sleep.
After watching this video, I think it would be an interesting idea if you had a side series where you compare and contrast 2 or more Pokemon who are relatively similar. Whether it'd be across every generation, or just one generation for simplicity, or just one generation with more details, the way you compared and contrasted Rhydon and Golem over the years was interesting. Maybe you could include specific damage calculations, roles on different teams, and overall pros and cons of both.
Regardless, I still love your videos and I always look forward to them every Sunday. Thanks FSG for great, consistent content!
If there were a way to have the effect of assault vest while raising speed, maybe both Golem forms could have a new outlook!

Though to be honest, atleast it was once good, unlike its Alolan Form that will never be a metagame staple, as long as Magnezone and even Magneton exist.
it has uses in OU like the video descriped. But it isn't good in any other format or to be used how it meant to be. as a classic bomber.

Odd request for a video, would love to see a video that covers the modern tier system and maybe the evolution of the tier system.
I always found it weird that they kept the Geodude evolution line Rock/Ground, I always thought he'd become a fighting type since he was just a rock who flexed his arms constantly and Graveler was a 4 armed boulder, Golem on the other hand to me felt like his own Pokemon and not part of the Geodude family.
To be honest, yeah. It's design doesn't at all follow. The other two are literally rocks, but golem is some sort of reptile? Doesn't check out
I know they combined some Pokemon evolution lines late in RBY's development (Wartortle did not originally evolve into Blastoise, for example). Maybe Golem was a standalone they combined with Geodude's family to reduce redundancy.
Golem should be psudo legendary
If I could change one thing about Competitive Golem, i'd make it so he'd stop getting bullied by Rhydon ;-;

the fact that neither him nor machamp have a mega evolution is heresy
They both should have gotten megas.
What about their clones? Gigalith and Conk?
@@Iceblade269 I actually like gigalith as a respectable replacement for golem, his rock slides hit like a truck
@@EmperorDionx And he has sand stream in gen 7.
I thought of a Mega Machamp for a while, it was something a little like this:
Type: Dragon/Fighting
Ability: Martial Artist (Essentially Tough Claws, but a 1.5x instead of 1.3)
Stats:
HP: 90
Attack: 175
Defense: 135
Special Attack: 15
Special Defense: 135
Speed: 55
and the ideal moveset might be something like
Cross Chop
Dual Chop
Bulk Up
Poison Jab
The idea behind the moveset and typing is that Machamp would be a martial artist who practices Southern Dragon Style Kung Fu. Southern Dragon style is a highly reactive style as far as I know, with the user typically waiting for the opponent to make a move, evade or parry the attack and then counterattack (hence why I didn't change its speed and increased its bulk). I would have included Focus Punch in the moveset, but since Mega Machamp would have no Lefties, I decided against it (the reason being that one of the four rule of Southern Dragon style is "focus to train and condition the body").
Design: I was thinking that Machamp would keep its four arms, have a Gi much like Sawk and Throh, and have some kind of dragon motif. Some emblems of a Gyarados (because it's a chinese dragon) on the Gi, give it some whiskers like a chinese dragon (really emphasize the hell outta that dragon motif).
Sorry about the long comment, but I saw your comment and wanted to share my idea for a Mega Machamp.
I remember when I was younger, me and my friend played through HGSS and he had a Golem which was a big deal to us. He always beat me with it
Then I received a Kyogre lol

As someone who knows Pokemon exclusively through Pokemon Go, I was surprised Golem wasn't better in the main series games. Because in PoGo, especially in 2017, Golem was basically one of the best Pokemon to do raids with - it was killer against Zapdos, Moltres, Entei and Raikou.
I gave up asking for Golem, but finally is here :'D
