You've covered a lot of it multiple times throughout this series, but having a dedicated video would be really entertaining, and a great tool for people who might be interested in some of the older metas
I always found it weird that they kept the Geodude evolution line Rock/Ground, I always thought he'd become a fighting type since he was just a rock who flexed his arms constantly and Graveler was a 4 armed boulder, Golem on the other hand to me felt like his own Pokemon and not part of the Geodude family.
I know they combined some Pokemon evolution lines late in RBY's development (Wartortle did not originally evolve into Blastoise, for example). Maybe Golem was a standalone they combined with Geodude's family to reduce redundancy.
Thank you for showcasing Golem after all this time. I remember using Golem a lot on my teams in Gen 1. I nearly had the same moveset as shown. I had Earthquake, Rockslide, Explosion and Mega Punch. Really good to use on my teams. I also used Rock Polish in the later gens to get a lower tier agilityGross type poke with Golem.
As someone who knows Pokemon exclusively through Pokemon Go, I was surprised Golem wasn't better in the main series games. Because in PoGo, especially in 2017, Golem was basically one of the best Pokemon to do raids with - it was killer against Zapdos, Moltres, Entei and Raikou.
Fun fact: Choice Band Alolan Golem Explosion with Galvanize is so damaging it could potentially one-shot a Mega Aggron that had max HP and Defense. Damage calculation: ((((2 * 100 / 5 + 2) * 372 Attack * 1.5 Choice Band * 250 * 1.2 Galvanize / 614 Defense) / 50) + 2) * 1.5 STAB = 346 damage versus Mega Aggron's 344 HP. However, this is only assuming the random damage multiplier is the highest possible value. The Mega Aggron would likely survive at low HP in practice.
honestly it is sad golem lost rapid spin, in gen 5 he could have been a great substitude to donphan as a check to sand teams that can explode on mons like conk or jirachi with custap, as well as a great replacement to garchomp/forretress in sand as a setter that also threaten stuff with stab earthquake and explosion basically doing the same thing excadrill does today, but with sturdy instead of mold breaker but he doesnt have rapid spin :(
Persistence paid off for me. I'm excited to see how this video plays out. Man, this was depressing. Design-wise, Golem was among my favorites and it's honestly sad to see it get hit so hard after GSC. Maybe the next generation will be kinder to Golem.
Golem may have lived in the shadow of Rhydon, but Alolan Golem was able to acquire metal facial hair (beard, mustache, and eyebrows) and gained the ability to zap water types with the power of thunder.
Hi! Are you going to do a quick revisit because of the body slam discovery in gen I described in freezai's recent video? It seems pretty recent that Rhydon definitivelyovertook Golem in the RBY meta
After watching this video, I think it would be an interesting idea if you had a side series where you compare and contrast 2 or more Pokemon who are relatively similar. Whether it'd be across every generation, or just one generation for simplicity, or just one generation with more details, the way you compared and contrasted Rhydon and Golem over the years was interesting. Maybe you could include specific damage calculations, roles on different teams, and overall pros and cons of both. Regardless, I still love your videos and I always look forward to them every Sunday. Thanks FSG for great, consistent content!
0:40 what about when Ash’s charizard tried to use seismic toss against Gary’s golem and it failed cuz Golem is too heavy? Tbh it’d be interesting if seismic toss had a mechanic where the heavier the pokemon is the more likely seismic toss would fail against it.
The fact that golem is now NU in gen 1 shows that this video (after the body slam discovery not being able to paralyze normal types making chansey and snorlax with reflect better making golems explosion useless) needs an update!
I thought of a Mega Machamp for a while, it was something a little like this: Type: Dragon/Fighting Ability: Martial Artist (Essentially Tough Claws, but a 1.5x instead of 1.3) Stats: HP: 90 Attack: 175 Defense: 135 Special Attack: 15 Special Defense: 135 Speed: 55 and the ideal moveset might be something like Cross Chop Dual Chop Bulk Up Poison Jab The idea behind the moveset and typing is that Machamp would be a martial artist who practices Southern Dragon Style Kung Fu. Southern Dragon style is a highly reactive style as far as I know, with the user typically waiting for the opponent to make a move, evade or parry the attack and then counterattack (hence why I didn't change its speed and increased its bulk). I would have included Focus Punch in the moveset, but since Mega Machamp would have no Lefties, I decided against it (the reason being that one of the four rule of Southern Dragon style is "focus to train and condition the body"). Design: I was thinking that Machamp would keep its four arms, have a Gi much like Sawk and Throh, and have some kind of dragon motif. Some emblems of a Gyarados (because it's a chinese dragon) on the Gi, give it some whiskers like a chinese dragon (really emphasize the hell outta that dragon motif). Sorry about the long comment, but I saw your comment and wanted to share my idea for a Mega Machamp.
Golem to me always looked like one of those evolutions added later in gen 4 despite being here since the start. Probably because Platinum was my first game.
Speaking of defying logic, in his battle against Gary, Ash's charizard was affected by Golem's magnitude despite being a flying type 😂 Also happy St. Patrick's day everyone!
Shea Is Bae Was Charizard roosted? And Vine Whip not really damaging Golem makes sense if it’s a physical attack with 40 base power and Golem uses defense curl. Who knew the anime was ahead of the curve when it comes to physical special split?
@@martytu20 I believe the battle was in the gen 2 anime, while roost wasn't introduced until gen 4 in the diamond and pearl series. Although if we're assuming the physical special split applies, a base 15 power move like fire spin definitely couldn't KO Golem lol :)
I'm pretty sure the same Golem that used Magnitude on Charizard also got one-shot by a Dragon Rage immediately after Seismic Toss failed from it being too heavy. Which is just hilarious. That 40 or less total HP Golem, gotta love anime logic. (Though, to be honest, I do prefer the anime's version of Dragon Rage in which it was essentially a "Dragon Pulse" or "Draco Meteor" kind of attack before those actually existed.)
@@JulianimeIsAmazing Yes that's the exact battle! I mean we're talking about the same battle where charizard beat scizor (which I can believe), golem and Gary's Blastoise all one after the other! I just noticed. I've seen the video several time and never really payed attention but something caugt my eye. At the beginning of the gen 7 segment, when Kellen says "Jack up". Golem's model is... Jacked up. This is the quality content I subscribed for.
Golem probably took the biggest fall after Gen 1 because of Rhydon, if Rhydon didn't get an evolution Golem probably would've been a bit better. At least its Alolan form is pretty good
Rhydon is more physically bulky and powerful, has freaking Swords Dance and a better movepool. Megahorn to crush the archnemesis Grass-types plus stuff like Levitate Rock-resists, the elemental punches and Dragon Tail as a phazing move. How could Golem be better even if Rhyperior was never a thing? Sucker Punch, Explosion and slighty better speed, ok, but still. And that Speed advantage would be a disadvantage in Trick Room teams.
Alolan Golem can learn magnet rise, as well as baton passing it to him. This negates the earthquake weakness for a few turns, and usually forces a switch out that you can predict, and counter.
Probably because most people turned to Rhydon for not killing itself, easier to use and better bulk and power, this is my best guess but not unrealistic

And then i usually give up mid way my second playthrough and end up not actually using multiple teams ^^. I still love Golem though, obviusly any mon can work for gym battles but i just don't play as much as i used too, and definitively not online anymore :(
i'd love to see you do a video doing an overview of the general competitive landscape throughout the years. You've covered a lot of it multiple times throughout this series, but having a dedicated video would be really entertaining, and a great tool for people who might be interested in some of the older metas

Rip the voice crack on "Unfortunately"
More like 9:47
There's probably a lot of people in the comments that can finally rest easy with this video coming out.
No when that INFERNAPE video came out that what really settle things down
I always found it weird that they kept the Geodude evolution line Rock/Ground, I always thought he'd become a fighting type since he was just a rock who flexed his arms constantly and Graveler was a 4 armed boulder, Golem on the other hand to me felt like his own Pokemon and not part of the Geodude family.
To be honest, yeah. It's design doesn't at all follow. The other two are literally rocks, but golem is some sort of reptile? Doesn't check out
I know they combined some Pokemon evolution lines late in RBY's development (Wartortle did not originally evolve into Blastoise, for example). Maybe Golem was a standalone they combined with Geodude's family to reduce redundancy.
Golem should be psudo legendary
Thank you for showcasing Golem after all this time. I remember using Golem a lot on my teams in Gen 1. I nearly had the same moveset as shown. I had Earthquake, Rockslide, Explosion and Mega Punch. Really good to use on my teams. I also used Rock Polish in the later gens to get a lower tier agilityGross type poke with Golem.
I think the rivalry between Golem and Rhydon in gen 1 was a great thing
Day 49 of me commenting you to say yadiyadiyada at the end of the video as you used to
Ah angry golfball i used golem in my first ever playthrough in platinum
If im right my team was
Empoleon
Golem
Leafon
Other 3 i dont know anymore
As someone who knows Pokemon exclusively through Pokemon Go, I was surprised Golem wasn't better in the main series games. Because in PoGo, especially in 2017, Golem was basically one of the best Pokemon to do raids with - it was killer against Zapdos, Moltres, Entei and Raikou.
If there were a way to have the effect of assault vest while raising speed, maybe both Golem forms could have a new outlook!
Dammit I thought it said "Golurk"
Feels bad man
Be happy! You got 4 extra gens of content, compared to if it were Golurk.
R.I.P
maybe next time
People actually like golurk?
golurk is ass
but not as ass as golem
as ass as as
I’ve been looking forward to this one.
Fun fact: Choice Band Alolan Golem Explosion with Galvanize is so damaging it could potentially one-shot a Mega Aggron that had max HP and Defense.
Damage calculation:
((((2 * 100 / 5 + 2) * 372 Attack * 1.5 Choice Band * 250 * 1.2 Galvanize / 614 Defense) / 50) + 2) * 1.5 STAB = 346 damage versus Mega Aggron's 344 HP.
However, this is only assuming the random damage multiplier is the highest possible value. The Mega Aggron would likely survive at low HP in practice.
finally guys we did it, after 112 weeks
Hey look, it's Jasper the Golem from Lucahjin's Heartgold LP (Not literally though). She was pretty much my favourite Pokémon in that LP.
honestly it is sad golem lost rapid spin, in gen 5 he could have been a great substitude to donphan as a check to sand teams that can explode on mons like conk or jirachi with custap, as well as a great replacement to garchomp/forretress in sand as a setter that also threaten stuff with stab earthquake and explosion
basically doing the same thing excadrill does today, but with sturdy instead of mold breaker
but he doesnt have rapid spin :(
Surprised no one has mentioned the voice crack at 9:46
Persistence paid off for me. I'm excited to see how this video plays out.
Man, this was depressing. Design-wise, Golem was among my favorites and it's honestly sad to see it get hit so hard after GSC. Maybe the next generation will be kinder to Golem.
I feel satisfied. Ceave and FSG uploaded at the same time. Yesss
Damn, some stiff competition between Jynx and Ludicolo next week.
Golem may have lived in the shadow of Rhydon, but Alolan Golem was able to acquire metal facial hair (beard, mustache, and eyebrows) and gained the ability to zap water types with the power of thunder.
Golem will come back to Gen 1 OU one day, I promise
I don’t think it really matters. Golem is really good in Gen 1 NU. It’s at least a better fate than Victreebel.
Thanks for making great content. I'm so burnt out on "big rumor leaks" that all other poketubers have been posting.
Finally, we are close to finished all OU Pokémon of the first gen!
Who’s left. Also please name actual useful Pokémon. Memes and trash like farfetch don’t count
TheNadroj10 Jynx
Clicca qui per vincere soldi A jynx video would be nice
Hi! Are you going to do a quick revisit because of the body slam discovery in gen I described in freezai's recent video? It seems pretty recent that Rhydon definitivelyovertook Golem in the RBY meta
As a kid he was my favorite pokemon, I hope he gets buffed up like Rhydon
Ah dont sweat Rhydon he isnt super anyways.
@@Chittamw00d Im not even sure why Rhydon ever deserved more than Golem anyway
@@gamincaimin9954 lmao only 2 evos and it was better than golem. I wish rhyperior and golem got mega evos.
If I could change one thing about Competitive Golem, i'd make it so he'd stop getting bullied by Rhydon ;-;
0:40 what about when Ash’s charizard tried to use seismic toss against Gary’s golem and it failed cuz Golem is too heavy? Tbh it’d be interesting if seismic toss had a mechanic where the heavier the pokemon is the more likely seismic toss would fail against it.
Galvanize explosion is the way to destroy bulky water types.
Unless they're Quagsire. Or Swampert. Or Gastrodon. Or...
You can always tell that some FSG viewers have never touched competitive Pokemon
Gengarzilla There are far more that will faint to it than not lol
@@gengarzilla1685 ....Seismitoad, Whiscash, Lanturn
The fact that golem is now NU in gen 1 shows that this video (after the body slam discovery not being able to paralyze normal types making chansey and snorlax with reflect better making golems explosion useless) needs an update!
*sees Golem video*
It has been 3000 years ;-;
Still didn't manage to make it into the video
Been waiting over a year for this, I can finally sleep.
the fact that neither him nor machamp have a mega evolution is heresy
They both should have gotten megas.
What about their clones? Gigalith and Conk?
@@Iceblade269 I actually like gigalith as a respectable replacement for golem, his rock slides hit like a truck
@@EmperorDionx And he has sand stream in gen 7.
I thought of a Mega Machamp for a while, it was something a little like this:
Type: Dragon/Fighting
Ability: Martial Artist (Essentially Tough Claws, but a 1.5x instead of 1.3)
Stats:
HP: 90
Attack: 175
Defense: 135
Special Attack: 15
Special Defense: 135
Speed: 55
and the ideal moveset might be something like
Cross Chop
Dual Chop
Bulk Up
Poison Jab
The idea behind the moveset and typing is that Machamp would be a martial artist who practices Southern Dragon Style Kung Fu.
Golem was a Pokémon I always wanted but could never have
"It was over all a SOLID pokemon in the PU metagame"
Bruh...
That's just Stone cold...
I feel like Golem is underrated. It’s one of the 4 Pokémon from gen 1 that evolve by trade. The Fab 4 Golem, Machamp, Gengar, and Alakazam
9:47
The voice crack lol
thought i was the only one who noticed lol
Yes, thank you. After years of asking. You did it.
I really wish he was a rock and dragon type
and psudo legendary
FINALLY you did golem!!! Happy day :)
I love it when he reviews underrated pokemon
I do hope yanma and yanmega are next
Why does Alolan Golem look like it's T-posing to assert dominance on us?
How good was agumon actually?
Golem to me always looked like one of those evolutions added later in gen 4 despite being here since the start. Probably because Platinum was my first game.
Maybe (Alolan) Golem should get Thunderwave despite being so slow it can actually pull off a sweep
It's not meant to sweep. It's supposed to trap steel types. If you want it to sweep, put it on a TR team.
Gen VII nerfed paralysis by changing the Speed drop from 75% to 50%, so I don't believe it would be enough.
Finally, I have been waiting for this one for a long time.
Ah-ha! They were using inverse battles before inverse battle were a thing.
Honestly though, it's such a great episode of the anime that I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for a little bit :)
golem is an absolute beast from gen 3
I remember when I was younger, me and my friend played through HGSS and he had a Golem which was a big deal to us. He always beat me with it
Then I received a Kyogre lol
Moment of Silence for when Golem was in Gen 1 OU...
How good was the Community Tab ACTUALLY?
New episode!! Highlight of my week
RIP to Gen 1 Golem, from OU beast to absolute trash ever since body slam got fixed.
“Where this nonsense will never happen”
My pyukumuku using soak:
“Are you sure about that?”
How weird is it that Golem got Rapid Spin for 1 generation and then lost it ever since? WTF gamefreak?
I just noticed. I've seen the video several time and never really payed attention but something caugt my eye. At the beginning of the gen 7 segment, when Kellen says "Jack up". Golem's model is... Jacked up. This is the quality content I subscribed for.
Golem probably took the biggest fall after Gen 1 because of Rhydon, if Rhydon didn't get an evolution Golem probably would've been a bit better. At least its Alolan form is pretty good
No Pokemon falls harder than Tauros.
@@TraumaCenter13 What about Jynx or Lapras?
Rhydon is more physically bulky and powerful, has freaking Swords Dance and a better movepool. Megahorn to crush the archnemesis Grass-types plus stuff like Levitate Rock-resists, the elemental punches and Dragon Tail as a phazing move.
How could Golem be better even if Rhyperior was never a thing?
Sucker Punch, Explosion and slighty better speed, ok, but still.
And that Speed advantage would be a disadvantage in Trick Room teams.
Alolan Golem can learn magnet rise, as well as baton passing it to him. This negates the earthquake weakness for a few turns, and usually forces a switch out that you can predict, and counter.
unfortunately golem moved down to uu in gen 1 because although it has it's own merits, rhydon is just better
Edit: golem is in nu
Probably because most people turned to Rhydon for not killing itself, easier to use and better bulk and power, this is my best guess but not unrealistic
Actually a couple of months ago, Smogon put out an article going over Golem’s fall from OU
www.smogon.com/articles/rby-golem-fall
This leaves the only gen where golem is viable in ou to be gen 2, because of rapid spin and explosion being buffed from 170 to 250 bp
