I am so impressed with this video and Ryan's instructions. Thorough but not information that doesn't apply to a lawn as some others do. I am just in the process of killing my weedy lawn and was going to seed in the spring but after watching this video I will hold off until summer as suggested. I will continue to follow Ryan and look into his products. I will follow-up next summer after I have used Ryan's instructions.
Love the positivity and encouragement for when things don’t go perfect. We all want it perfect first time and immediately but it’s just not what happens. Thanks from Ireland
+1 for premium seed. I switched after I wound up with a BAD Poa breakout in my backyard. About 25% of the lawn was overrun and had significant bare soil the following spring. So I switched to a premium seed brand for the next overseed and not only had zero weed infiltration, but also MUCH darker, lusher thicker results, and FAR better growth in the shady areas. Well worth the extra money!!!
Hey Ryan, I recently decided to undertake a lawn renovation/spring seeding of my own in a house I recently bought. I started with a soil test that was sent over to Waypoint, which revealed that my PH was a bit high, my Phosphorous was way too high (binding nutrients) and my soil comp was classified as Loamy Sand. In an effort to begin amending my soil composition I purchased 10cu yds of leaf compost from a reputable compost supplier who screens and monitors their composting process. I first aerated, then dethatched, aerated again, and then applied elemental sulfur to the base soil. After that, I began top dressing with the compost I had delivered. The compost was rather moist due to recent rainfall, but I did my best to spread it as evenly as possible and work it into the existing lawn, but in a lot of areas didn't have much success. After that, I proceeded to apply a 25lb bag of seed mix from SS and part of a 5lb (shade mix) to my yard over the compost. After that, I put down a 14-2-3 fertilizer, weighed out for the correct app rate, and tossed down a bag of Bio-Char. After that I rolled everything in with a water roller, and then top dressed with peat moss using the landsie spreader. I've been watering for 10-20 minutes, 2-3 times a day depending on weather conditions to keep the seed moist. I'm seeing some of the old grass coming up through the layer of compost, but none of the new seed germinating due to weather conditions in Northern NJ. Did I butcher my yard or am I just being impatient? It's been about 2 weeks with cooler weather and we're just starting to see some warmer soil temps this week. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you and I love your channel!
My project this year is fixing a lawn that was neglected for 10 years before we bought the house... Crab grass, moss, weeds, clover. Going to try to do an irrigation system before summer so I can keep it watered. Moss is dead and I've thatched and seeded. Fingers crossed it works! Love your tips and knowledge!
Just got my Ryan Knorr Tall Fescue/Bluegrass seed mix and looking forward to completing my bare ground lawn renovation with it. Thanks for all the info and great quality products!
So glad you have your own line of products! Congrats! Can’t wait to order my seed for the fall! 💪🏼🌱 And, thank you, I’ve been watching your channel for over a year now. Our yard has completely transformed since we bought our house a year and a half ago. Still lots to do, but it’s looking amazing.
And YOU get a free hat and YOU get a free hat haha. Looking forward to seeing the updates on this one, I hope you’ll have a little more access and willingness to go along with your recommendations cheers. Makes me laugh thinking about you and CW doing the “Night at the Roxbury” car bop.
looks like fun out in the field. hopefully now we get some decent rains without any crazy washouts. I'm sold on the idea of using high quality seed. all the work and time put in and the look of your lawn is worth investing up front.
Thanks Ryan! Did some leveling and seeding 4 weeks ago and already promising results. Hoping this Midwest freeze next week doesn’t ruin the momentum (28 degrees and snow this Tuesday in Indy :(
For that Tall Fescue Joke to work for the mainstream, you probably need Conner standing next to you!!! Congratulations on the Channel Ryan you are just going from strength to strength, great production value's, great subject matter, your own expanding product range and a cast of great guests. Look forward to what you have instore for the rest of the Season.
Thanks Ryan just did a bermuda seeding project in my front yard took the same steps. So excited to see I retained a bit of info from your videos lol!!! Today was the 7th day and got to see some germination. First time and so excited to see how it turns out!! Thanks for all the great in depth info!!!
Love your videos and appreciate the informed comparisons of product. Bought your liquids box off of Amazon last season and it couldn’t be easier. Looking forward to this season’s updates.
Looking forward to your continued projects, Ryan. I live in SE Wisconsin, had a lawn "professionally" installed late June/Early July 2020 at my new home, and it's needing help. I've been watching your videos for quite some time now and these definitely give me great ideas on what I can do. I know this year I need to get at least the front yard leveled, because it's ridiculously uneven. Got my Levelawn rake a couple weeks ago to get that project started. :) I also need to figure out when/how to overseed the many thin/bare areas and get rid of all of this clover, crabgrass, and what I believe is foxtail. I feel embarrassed, because a neighbor across the street had their lawn installed in September and theirs exploded with growth already. They're actually the only people in my neighborhood who had to mow, and it choked the mower because it was so long. I've got a bit over a half acre of fun, but I use Tenacity sparingly, since spraying isn't fun. haha!
Wanted to say THANKS for everything Ryan. Just ordered a big bag of Bluegrass from you and going to follow this program after my septic install this week🤘🏼
RK-your plan, work, and outcomes are very well executed. Thank you for your generosity on the knowledge you share with us. And thank you for the hat boyeeeeee!
Thanks for this video buddy, I am working on a similar project right now and I have to seed now due to slope. I don’t find many videos for us with 25k+ sq/ft. lawns and it’s nice to see you using some budget friendly supplies. It gets very expensive dealing with an acre of lawn.
Excited to see how the project lawn turns out as I have a similar sloped yard and want to see how it holds through germination. As always very informative stuff to think about!
Oh No!!!! Ryan put down the wrong bag of seed again! Lol😂🤣😂🤣 As always,. Loving your videos. Keep up the Amazing work👍🏻 God Bless you and your family Brother ✝️
Looking forward to you going through your new products. Got some of your Ryegrass seeds. Looking forward to overseeding in the fall. Thanks for all your tips and info. Definitely helped bring the 15 yr old dormant lawn in my new house back to life. 👍🏻
Looks like a fun project. I’m interested in seeing those new products you and Matt came up with, especially the soluble powders. Get up the awesome work 👍
i look forward to the next video as i just had to do an overseed this spring. i had no choice or my lawn would have been bare. i had to put topsoil down as well to level some lower spots. i did buy seed from my local shop that has specialized seed for our area. i am hoping it takes and looks as good as you lawn.. thanks for the videos
Waiting for a detailed video on the Fescue vs the 100% Rye.. I’ll rewatch the fescue video again tho. I’m thinking of using that for a high traffic back yard overseed this fall. This is the second season with this back yard project. Did a spring fill with Loam, level and overseed last spring. It def grew a LOT of junk but I’m going to hit it hard this year. I’ve got 100% rye SS9000 down on the front lawn tho. 😎🤘🏻
I just seeded over the weekend bare yard over in Altoona from your guide, and videos Thanks man :). Overseeded/dethatched/aerated to match the best I could. 9 yards of black dirt 50/50 compost from Kleener Image. I went 80/20 Tall Fescue/Bluegrass.
I followed very similar steps from your prior vids for spring seeding my back lawn. We've had temps in the 80's and will be below freezing tomorrow. Expectations are definitely limited and will be over seeding this fall.
@@mmonte60 still going strong to this day! Have only fertilized and hand picked weeds in the section I did in that spring. Have overseed each fall. And I'm in central Missouri.
I used that Scott’s for seeding after I overseeded my front lawn. I followed instructional it says to apply before you water newly seeded grass. I did. And a couple weeks later I got weeds growing. I guess I will have to spot spray the weeds before they get further out of control. And I guess I will re apply in a couple weeks.
I’m planning on trying the Scott’s Built For Seeding on my renovation area. Looking forward to see how it works out with yours. I like the idea of having the mesotrione right in there and saving the spraying step.
Basically everything I wanted to know, except for when this should be done. After danger of frost? Maybe couple weeks before that, as soon as they turn irrigation back on? I live in northern Utah and I’m planning to spread a cool season, drought tolerant seed.
You won't want anything to germinate and then get a freeze so definitely after that and you want irrigation to be consistent for best results so I would have that on as well. When highs are consistent in the upper 60s to around 70 but not freezing temps at night would be good.
Idea for a video: What if you tested in a small patch of lawn doing pretty much everything wrong when spring seeding? Basically just rake out some soil, spread KBG seed down, keep up with watering, and that's it? So no weed control, kbg seed, no cover over the seed, no raking into the soil, and plant too late into spring. What will it look like in a few months?
I overseeded "the great depression" area that I had in the front with some perennial rye. I absolutely love it and it look fantastic. Do you have a specific perennial rye that you would recommend (in your product line). Thanks.
Great video Ryan! I found that scotts product on sale during the winter at Lowes. I put that down on areas I had reno'd in the fall and the results were great! Weeds actually came up white and the turf is thriving right now!!! PS, Connor gave his reveal of his mullet. When is yours? LOL
I’m trying out the Scott’s ultra feed this season. I thought it was a good option as were moving here in about a month and a half so I’ll get a good run with it, and it’ll (supposedly) keep feeding for months after I am gone. It feels strange to be preparing my lawn journal to turn over to a new home owner.
Right? Like I don't think most people expect a binder with aerial shots and square footage mapping and math and what products I've used and when I do what if they want to keep it like they got it. lol But I totally will! lol
Congrats on your release of Lawn Supply, Ryan! In light of that, I have a question about liquid fertilizing. After doing some math regarding direct weight of N-P-K to pricing of product, it seems like generally granular fertilizers are well ahead of liquid in $/pound. I'm still fairly new to lawn care (moved into a house with a long neglected yard), so perhaps I'm missing something. Would you be able to cover the intangible benefits of liquid fertilizing in the upcoming videos?
Yep, you are correct. Granular will get you a lot more N but there are other things that liquid can do for your program. Foliar feeding can get you results very quickly, as well as being very controlled in what you expect the product to do and how the grass reacts. Feeding in smaller doses can control growth very well whereas sometimes granular can cause a surge for a few weeks and then it falls off once that wears off. The other benefit of foliar is if you are using the right ingredients then you can target things to feed the plant even if you pH might be a little off. I like to use both granular and liquid in a program as they each have a time and place.
Hey man, I just stumbled across your channel and I gotta say out of all the "lawn professionals" You definately seem the most knowledgeable. I need to seed my yard, and living in Maryland we don't get a ton of rain like some places, and to top it off I'm on a well so I can't pump endless gallons of water as if I was on city/county water.
