I did it in the spring a couple yrs ago here in east tn with cheapo annual rye, dethatched and mowed down to basically the dirt. Added a crapton...haha...of my horses compost, harrowed it all in n then spread the seed, ab 20lbs total and watered 3x a day. It popped up great n I watered at least a couple times a day after it sprouted. It looked great all summer. Last summer, yes in the summer...I dethatched and mowed super short again, n put down 100 bags of topsoil and then overseeded with around 25lbs of fine fescue and used scotts starter fert. That grew like crazy and it was July in East Tn 100 temp days!! Its about 4000sqft. About a month ago I dethatched again and mowed it super short, then put down a weed n feed. If I didnt mow it I would have about a foot tall hayfield in my front yard already!! I refuse to follow seeding rules hehe. I also seeded a horse pasture with annual rye in early Jan one yr, it was hip tall by March even with freezing temps off n on till then!
Another awesome video George. Your channel has helped me a ton with my yard. I overseeded this spring and had really good success so far. Can I use the tenacity for the entire yard, not just the overseeded spots?
Finishing some dethatching this week and planning to cut low to seed over the weekend here in Columbus, OH. Question for you in regards to some products you have recommended in your videos. I got the Mesotrones (Tenacity) to use to treat weeds while seed is coming in so I feel comfortable with that. My question is the liquid iron you have used in your ugly lawn recovery video. Would this be good or bad to use as the lawn starts to come back in?
George - I'm doing my fall reseed and the green grass is beginning to grow. Your videos have been the best resource on UA-cam. Thanks for what you do - great work!
I swear I got a patch of Kentucky Poograss to sprout last spring. Ended up getting lazy and lost it to creeping F Charlie. I'm at it again this year. I got a garden weasel tool. Man that breaks up the top soil for a broad area pretty quick. I'm not expecting much, really just prepping for fall and trying to see what I can get.
Hey buddy.. so im on day 13 of my seed project.. the PR is coming in really good in my bare patches! Ran into 2 issues.. 1. I couldn't put down tenacity with my seed because it was 90s that week.. I was nervous it was going to not work and/or stress out the grass so I do have quite a bit of weeds popping up. Not really sure when to spray.. some people were saying a month? Im not sure what's right there. And 2nd the grass where the bare patches are NOT.. its getting soooo long so I have to cut already. My bare patches are getting longer tho.. almost 2.5 inches for the new grass. Luckily I got alot of sprouts day 3 thru 5 with the rye so I'm just debating whether to reel mow or use my Honda. I hate putting the heavy mower on the grass but some spots are maybe 5 or 6 inches long, some areas are 3ish inches..I'm just worried about the long areas and if bagging would be best. Not sure if the reel mower will cut that long of grass either without me going over it multiple times. Ughh decisions... if you have any advice on either of these let me know! Sorry this was long.. I always tell my husband I'll ask George haha.. hes like who's that? Princess cut duh.. hes like oooh well why didn't you say that?! That's what he knows you as lol 🤦🏼♀️
Great video as always George! I remember that urge to seed in the spring back when I was about 12 or 13 and learning to care for my yard. And generally I actually had great success in the spring with the good amounts of rain. Now that I'm a bit older I contain myself and wait until September until undergoing seeding projects
Great Video Below is my opinion - not saying I am 100% right and your wrong to consider these products. Mesotrione & Tenacity are over rated for ease of use IMO but I don’t use so my opinion is low grade. Reasons I don’t think these products are that great for most people - including myself. Does not kill weeds fast - in fact you really really really need to apply three times. Thats a month and a half of ugly weeds that are now white/highlighted. This is two months of white weeds in your lawn. If you don’t re-apply the weeds that resisted the white death the first time are still there spreading new growth for your next season but more resilient.
Thanks Patrick! And you are absolutely right, tenacity is an OK weed killer at best. Only time i like to use it is for seeding for at least some type weed control and as a kicker to other much stronger broadleaf herbicides like speedzone.
Best thing about PRG , you can have great success spring seeding with it , it fills in quickly so you still have time to push the roots before the stress of summer! Good video 👍🏻
I'm in northeast ohio, I just finished a renovation/overseed with GCI Spreader Elite (spreading TTTF) and Beyond KBG. some areas are over seed and some are bare dirt. if you're in the Chicago area with 100 degree summer heat, we don't get that type of heat here. Ive seeded in the spring many times with good success, this time I'm using spreading grasses and hope the KBG is as successful as the fescue has always been. the fall is premergent time because poa annua is a major issue. going the spreading grass helps with that as well
I am trying to seed here in Federal Way, Washington. Perennial rye grass and some KBG. It's been tough the temperatures high to mid 50' with some low 60's. Also i trid to seed last September with KBG temperatures were down. Great video
@@PrincessCutLawnCare thanks! I’m planning on overseeing bermuda but I have an area full of weeds which I plan to get rid of and put new Bermuda Scotts THICK'R LAWN Grass Seed in that area. Will mesotronine work for planting new Bermuda grass seed? Because apparently it only works with Bermuda when it’s dormant in the winter. Thanks!!
PCLC! Big question I can't find answers to that I was hoping you could help me with. I was talking to a buddy today whose lawn was overgrown and was growing seeds. Can we let our lawns overgrow and then mow the seeds down and naturally overseed our lawns without having to buy grass seed? Would be an interesting thing to test as well with some videos. Natural seed vs store bought. Ect Ect
Awesome job, and video George! I'm probably the odd ball here, but I have had way better results seeding in the spring in my area. but I definitely agree for everyone else fall is probably the best option. keep it up dude!👍🏻
Hey can you help me out ? I'm in the UK and i gonna buy me some Tenacity, does it kill dock leafs weeds ? Coz the roots of them bastard go down deep man 😂 And there is a reason I mentioned I'm in the UK a few weed killers that you recommended they don't sell them over here 😢 but Tenacity they do 💪
What do I do if I overseed but my grass is growing too fast? I overseeded in spring, but 10 days later my existing grass is growing and asking for a mow. My seeds just started to germinate and can see some tiny grass popping up hahaha cheers love your videos
Thinking of seeding a bare area on the side of my home. Can you leave a link to the tall fescue seed you used with the blue label? Thanks!!! Love your videos!!!
Is mesotrione a good post emergent and safe for seeding? Can I use milorganite too. I used ortho weed spray no luck with dandelions and have patchy lawn
Good stuff right there George! Spring seeding can be done you just have to choose the right seed and invest the time 👍 and kudos to your Special Guest Star 🌟
I'd like to see you test pre-germinating KBG (soaking in water method) vs spreading seed and watering (normal method). I'd like to know how much faster pre-germinating is, if the pre-germination yields better grass, and if you would be able to make KBG work in the spring by pre-germinating.
Excellent suggestion my friend, thank you for sharing. Im adding it to my notes right now. Along with pregerminating, i will also use a heat tolerant bluegrass cultivar along w any other additional supplements that can help give it an edge against the heat. Im determined to make it work or at least try haha Love the feedback my friend, these are the comments that mean the most.
I bought that same brand Mesotrione on Amazon and they shipped to my state no problem but Tenacity will not ship to my state. Makes no sense but I saved a lot of money
I learned a good tip from athletic field pros on how to quickly get seed to root in soil. Use a cheese cloth and a 5 gallon bucket tonsoakmthe seed in water. Lift to drain and keep moist in garage. Once seeds begin to germinate spread in to area needing to get covered. It also gives the DIYer time and saves money on watering. I used peat moss to cover once spread out to achieve optimal moisture control. Thanks for the research and info on your lawn.
No problem William Ive seen people pregerminating their seed before but never got around to trying it out for myself. Happy to hear you had success with it.
Hey buddy got a question.. Im putting down my seed tomorrow finally.. its been so rough with the weather. Question is... Im using Milorganite and tenacity spray after I seed. Should I put those down before or after I lay my peat moss since the peat will be my last step..?? oh im putting some seed success too..that really helped last year. Also once I lay the peat moss I'm going to wet it because of the winds tomrw so does that matter with those products if you tell me to apply after the peat moss? I hope this makes sense. Trying to figure out the order in which to apply. Thanks always for all your help!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare ok i definitely knew that...im going to put down seed..rake a little and roll it so I get good seed to soil contact. So its cool if I fertilize and spray tenacity before the peat or is it better to do after? Or doesn't matter? THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!
I seeded my cool season lawn last year on the 4th of July. Came in beautifully and is still healthy. It gets 90% sun during the day as well. You can seed at anytime the conditions are warm enough, you just have to know what you are doing.

Started a tall fescue lawn from seed March 20th here in NC. First lawn project, but I watched tons of your videos & I’m hopeful it will work out! Used limestone, peat moss, starter fertilizer, root hume, and Pennington slopemaster. Also ready with my tenacity for later, as well as iron and liquid aerator (Thatch Buster) Gonna mix in creeping red fescue in Fall. Probably starting end of August. Thanks for all your videos!! Extremely helpful & easy to follow.
Cool That you just put up this video here in nj I literally just put some p rye At some of my beer spot for faster germination. This will be an experiment to see how it does going into summer but the majority of my lawn is still fescue

Yes! I am seeding 😆!! and it's been sich a difficult Spring this yearrrrrrrrrrrr!!! (Ontario, 🇨🇦) and I ve got KBG seeds 🤪 As you said, I need to lower my expectations and work on my lawn this fall and next year. I had already bought 100% KBG blend way ahead of time, not knpwing how crappy this Spring was going to be 😕 I will tey and learn..! Thank you for this video! it's awesome that you got Brett in it:)
You got this brotha! i heard the snow just started to melt in canada haha, you may have better luck seeding your kbg than me due to the cooler temps up there. Good luck!
George - what does a 'lawn care nut' do when it downpours days after completing overseeding / laying peat moss project? How do I tell if there is washout? Do I have to reapply the seed?
haha hi paul! i had several spots that wased out last year and ultimatly lead to ugly bare spots. the only thing that was able to finally hold the seed in was a product called "Fairway Formula Seeding Success Biodegradable Mulch" you can get it at home depot. It contains a tackifier and will literally glue your seed to the ground. Onces you have germination, asses where the wash out is, reseed those areas and throw this stuff down on it and it wont happen again
I've seeded my patchy lawn with PRG two times this spring. I did part of it in March, and all of that grass is growing strong and doing very well. I had to wait for the sun to get a little higher in the sky to seed the back half of the yard, which is shady all winter. I put the seed down last week and today I saw widespread sprouting! Can't wait to get this yard filled in, and if any of this new grass dies off I can always re-seed in the fall.
I seeded 100% KBG in Spring (full reno front and backyard for the first time everrr) this year. It was a hell of a work..! it took 2-3weeks to germinate. i also seeded in a small tray and germination took 2 weeks. Surprisingly lawn filled in entire area. Lots of water to make young grass survive in summer. I used hydretain as well. despite I used disease resistant KBG varieties, my backyard got fungus damage in many spots this month. it's been a learning process. I already applied Prodiamine. I seeded in sma tray last week n put em outside, and they already started germinating within 5 days. end of summer/Fall is definitely better for seeding KBG, as many people say. But, Spring seeding KBG is still possible. just more work. I hope I won't need to overseed in next Spring 🤞
Great video! I live in Ottawa, Ontario so I always overseed with cool season grasses like Fescue. My backyard dies every winter and I don't understand why. It looks great in the Fall and winter absolutely destroys it so that there's nothing left come Spring and I'm starting from scratch. I was tired of starting from scratch so last year I seeded clover thinking a weed would be more hardy. Well the same thing happened and 2/3 of the clover died. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I'm going to purchase a PH Meter this weekend so see if that tells me anything about the soil levels.
I loved the way you titled this unlike some other lawn peeps who make it sound impossible for average people to do unless you are awesome like them. So ty for that ❤🤗 I get its better to seed in fall but when you kill half your lawn with glyphosate .. you don't have a choice! Thanks for the motivation and tips as always! Happy spring seeding.. and thanks for adding about the perennial rye bc thats what I'm doing.. was gonna add some KBG in but now I'm second guessing.
Thanks Kelly! i would air on the side of caution seeding kbg as that spout n pout phase will last well into the summer. But if brett can grow a full prg lawn in the middle of the desert during spring, i know you can too! good luck
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Aww thanks i appreciate it..ill have to check him out! Would it be a bad idea to do like 10 to 20 percent or probably skip it all together for the KBG?
Nice video George. I have fair sized some bald spots on my lawn from not reseeding in a timely manner here in Northeast PA. I didnt reseed my mostly tall fescue lawn this spring for the reasons you said. But as the heat of summer approaches I worry the soil on those bald spots will get fried by the sun and affect soil quality for when I choose to reseed come early September. What can I do to protect the soul in those spots? Thanks.
Thanks for all this info on planting tall fescue. I have learned so much about lawn care in watching your videos as well as others. It's hard to find info on the steps involved. I like how you did in sections. I have a lot of weeds in my yard. First I'll kill the weeds and crabgrass. I have a lot of thatch in my yard. So, next I'll either rent or buy a dethatcher so my seeds can get good contact with the soil, fill in the low spots etc. I'll make sure to spray the tenacity to prevent what I'm trying to get rid of! Anyway, thanks for simplifying things!!
Thanks bro, they are toroe glasses, they sent them to me to try for free and i must say i love them, they are affordable and dang they are very comfortable
Great vid George. Spring seeding is not ideal at least for us cool-season people but sometimes we just go for it. This year is extra tough with how cool it has been for many of us , keeping those soil temps low and then likely a quick switch to the heat which will likely stress such young grass. I seeded a couple trouble spots but super small , literally a few spots the circumference of a basketball each but not bothered if they do not take so well. Over the years I have switched to mostly autumn seedings , as it just comes with much better results imo. The soil temps are nice and warm yet the days are getting cooler, long hours of morning dew , birds less crazy for the seed by me (compared to the Spring) and the cooler and shorter days help not beat the young grass up so much. If possible to wait , autumn is by far the best time to seed for us cool-season people.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare not looking great so far , with the overall temps. My soil temps here in Northern NJ have barely gotten above 50 degrees yet until the end of last week. We only had one or two warm days so far , if i had to bet I feel like we are going to get a brief Spring and right into summer. Luckily I am not seeding much this year, I want to keep the seeding to a minimum after a big reno last season ; especially since I want get back on a pre-emergent schedule.
Had a crazy question my lawn has horrible grade issues on three sides on top of the larger dips that have appeared this year. Would it be better to get a landscaper to just regrade my yard or should I take it all one step at a time
I would love to see a new updated video of this for this year! I'm thinking I should lay perennial ryegrass but would love to see what your doing NOW for growing grass on bare areas

i had the same philosophy back then too haha
Another awesome video George. Your channel has helped me a ton with my yard. I overseeded this spring and had really good success so far. Can I use the tenacity for the entire yard, not just the overseeded spots?
Thanks trey! yes i spot sprayed all the weeds in my lawn after i was done applying it to the seeds
Would this be good or bad to use as the lawn starts to come back in?
hi nick! it depends, did your seed this spring or no?
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I am seeding this weekend. Have not seeded any other time
George - I'm doing my fall reseed and the green grass is beginning to grow. Your videos have been the best resource on UA-cam. Thanks for what you do - great work!
its such a great feeling seeing your seedlings grow! so happy for you brian!
appreciate you!
I agree seeding KBG in Spring is a pain in the ass. Constantly watering it and maybe 60% grew in. Great video, concise no fluff and informative 👌
Haha it is! Not falling for the ol seeding kbg in spring idea ever again lol
Appreciate you Shane!
Hey buddy.. so im on day 13 of my seed project.. the PR is coming in really good in my bare patches!
Antelope Brand seed!
Great video as always George! I remember that urge to seed in the spring back when I was about 12 or 13 and learning to care for my yard. And generally I actually had great success in the spring with the good amounts of rain. Now that I'm a bit older I contain myself and wait until September until undergoing seeding projects
Haha seems my inner 12 year old comes out every spring 😆
Great Video
Below is my opinion - not saying I am 100% right and your wrong to consider these products.
Good video 👍🏻
thanks man, never tried it but yall making me what to seed some more areas w prg now!
I agree much easier to grow and less resources needed to apply.
Great video
Love the video!!
Thanks shoaib! good to see you again brother!
You spray mesotrione before or after watering after seeding? Is the order seed, spray, water? Or…?
Any order works 👍 I’ve done it both ways successfully
Ect Ect

Im determined to make it work or at least try haha
Love the feedback my friend, these are the comments that mean the most.
I bought that same brand Mesotrione on Amazon and they shipped to my state no problem but Tenacity will not ship to my state. Makes no sense but I saved a lot of money
wow thats interesting, glad to hear they got it out to you!
Thanks
I learned a good tip from athletic field pros on how to quickly get seed to root in soil. Use a cheese cloth and a 5 gallon bucket tonsoakmthe seed in water. Lift to drain and keep moist in garage. Once seeds begin to germinate spread in to area needing to get covered. It also gives the DIYer time and saves money on watering. I used peat moss to cover once spread out to achieve optimal moisture control.
Thanks for the research and info on your lawn.
No problem William
Ive seen people pregerminating their seed before but never got around to trying it out for myself. Happy to hear you had success with it.
oh hell naw.....did my KBG last fall...like you said last year....looks great....
Happy to hear it looks good 👍
Hey buddy got a question..
Good morning! The order you apply does not matter as long as the seed is under the peat

Good stuff bro. Love the Collab with Brent. You should do one with the Lawn Whisperer too.
Thanks Robbie! i did a podcast w justin last spring, you should check it out, was a good time
I've seeded my patchy lawn with PRG two times this spring.
Now thats the attitude to have! 😀
Theres no better feeling than seeing your babies sprout:)))
👍🇨🇦
Thanks neighbor!
Great video Georgie!
Thanks Frankie! good to see you man! its been a while, i missed you bro
I loved the way you titled this unlike some other lawn peeps who make it sound impossible for average people to do unless you are awesome like them. Happy spring seeding.. and thanks for adding about the perennial rye bc thats what I'm doing.. was gonna add some KBG in but now I'm second guessing.
Thanks Kelly! i would air on the side of caution seeding kbg as that spout n pout phase will last well into the summer. But if brett can grow a full prg lawn in the middle of the desert during spring, i know you can too! good luck

Anyway, thanks for simplifying things!!
awesome job

Thanks bro, they are toroe glasses, they sent them to me to try for free and i must say i love them, they are affordable and dang they are very comfortable
I used the pre germinating method for Kentucky bluegrass. I had full success overseeding in the spring.
If possible to wait , autumn is by far the best time to seed for us cool-season people.
tell me about it! this year has been so bad!
hopefully we dont get 10 min of spring and go straight into summer but it wouldn't surprise me:(
@@PrincessCutLawnCare not looking great so far , with the overall temps. My soil temps here in Northern NJ have barely gotten above 50 degrees yet until the end of last week.
