We have this bottle and first night we cracked it blinded it against KC 18 and KC18 won 3 votes to 1. We were underwhelmed, but we recently had it again to do a review, which will be coming soon and thought it was a lot better after having been open for a couple of weeks. Gonna try it against EC18 and see how it does. Cheers!

Rant accepted! If they need to put out more bottles, at least go 100 proof like the Remus Repeal Reserve releases. Especially at that price!

That price is rough for that proof point

The thought process is crazy. There’s so many orphan barrels sitting around me in stores, and you have to feel like if they raised the proof to 100 and charged.. hell even another $50… they’d fly off the shelves 😂

This sort of thing has bothered me for a long time. On many occasions, I have encountered a whisky that seems very promising on the nose, but it is too watered down. Maybe experienced whisky drinkers get used to the higher strength and greater concentration of flavors over time, and lower strength stuff starts to taste like water. Not too long ago, I ordered a pour of Macallan 12-year at a bar just to remind myself of what it was like since I hadn't had it in a long time. The nose on it is wonderful, just as I remembered. Unfortunately, when I tasted it, it tasted like water that had sat next to some Scotch. The bourbon described in this video sounds like a similar experience. If that Macallan 12 had been higher strength (even 46% might have been sufficient - it usually is for a well made single malt) and non-chill filtered, it could have been a far better experience. However, I can excuse it. Macallan 12 is an entry level, beginner-friendly Scotch, so it isn't really designed for whisky nerds. Even though it isn't my thing, I would not hesitate to recommend it to a beginner. Unfortunately, older and far more expensive bottles from Macallan get the same treatment. I won't be buying them.
Considering the price of this bourbon, I think something from the Barrell gray label line-up would likely give a better experience at the same price. Those have been criticized for being a bit overpriced, but at least they provide unique flavor profiles at a proper strength, allowing the flavor to be fully realized. I don't understand why some advanced whiskies like this bourbon and the older, overpriced Macallans are watered down and filtered to death. Fortunately, there are other options.

I like the 24 year muckety-muck. I bought the 25 year muckety-muck and it was totally worse.

It’s like having a great vinyl album cover, but a crap set of songs when the needle hits. That sux! I’m glad I passed on this @$229. Even Gatz 15 was close to 100 proof. Some of these companies are trying to fleece us, but they’re going to pay a price. They’re not going to get repeat buyers!
    Thanks! Great review! Cheers!

Every Orphan Barrel is like having a new record on the platter with a worn needle that makes it sound muffled like you have your ears plugged. And you paid 5 times for that record for what another good record costs.

I bought one at Costco for $175, and I wouldn’t pay that again for it.

That’s too bad. Maybe it will be like the fable and folley and get better as it opens up but the problem is F&F was $130 now they want $230 for this.

I know it may not be apples to apples but this OB vs the Dickel 17 vs the Remus Gatsby releases in a blind?? (if youve got them- to pick them all up wouldn't be a very cost efficient excercise 😂)

Haha!! I don’t have the Dickel, just a 15yr single barrel. That would stand out like a sore thumb though. That said, maybe I should blind OB with the Gatsby on tonight’s stream..

Unfortunately with the exception of Lost Prophet and maybe a couple others, these are kinda lack luster at best

The nose on every Diageo product is great, that’s where it ends. Almost entirely across the board, their distillate is watered to 86 or 90 and chill filtered and colored. They’re all consumed with marketing and max profits. I’ve paid for several pours of Muckety and Forager’s at a whiskey bar, but I will never purchase an entire bottle. I think that’s all terrible, but it’s not my billion dollar business.

So disappointing. The hallmark of a whiskey making screw up is a great nose followed by a dilute palate. Don’t even tease me with that.

Nope!! 👎 ! I’d grab some amazing single malt scotch whiskies at this price but not this Bourbon and not at this proof. Way too overpriced.
