Hi Muireann McQuillan, you're not alone in this world, I live in the tropic, and I'm using hats and sunglasses since my treatment with tretinoine does my skin more sensitive to sun, and yet here, people looks at me like I'd be crazy, because they don't have an appropriate skincare education, lol, but it really doesn't matter to me, while my skin is protected.☺️
Muireann McQuillan lol 😆...... I also get those strange looks from my friends but I have become used to now since I have been using sunscreen for a long time now. I don’t even bother to explain now. Earlier I used to. 😊
Dr Dray I just want to say how much you have changed my skin, not just my skin, but my mindset about skin health in general, I used to have bad cystic acne, this was in highschool and it made me so depressed all the time. I was extremely self conscious and never wanted to go out or be social bc I was afraid of people judging my skin, I started watching your channel about a year ago and let me just say you have absolutely transformed my skin. I have soft and glowing skin every single day bc of you! Thank you so so so much like I can’t say thank you enough. Your amazing and please keep up the awesome work you do😊
I would love for you to cover common skin changes during perimenopause & menopause. I’m knocking on menopause’s door & my skin has really changed in my 40s. I’ve even developed rosacea within the last year. My poor skin has always been dry but now it’s on another level.
55 y/o few wrinkles, light/pale, mild rosacea, sebaceous hyperplasia, burns easily, sensitive, oily, but sometimes flakes at brows, and gets pih. I’m a mixture of a bunch of things. Because of that I keep my skincare VERY simple. Has worked for me over the years.
I use a cleansing balm for when I wear makeup (right now I’m using Heimish). CeraVe hydrating cleanser, CeraVeSA cream in the tub (nightly or daily when i need a boost). Game changer for me was Pixi Glow Tonic (5% glycolic acid). It’s gentle exfoliation for 2x/day. Day moisturizer is typically a light lotion. I’ll be switching to a drug store product as soon as my Laniege water bank serum lotion is done. In my younger years I over-exfoliated my skin, hence broken capillaries. As for the hyperplasia, I think that’s hereditary. I also inherited my Dad’s youthful “Dorian Gray” genes. Don’t smoke/vape, stay hydrated. Oh, i forgot most important part - Also follow with a high spf sunscreen (Heimish again, but trying LaRoche Posay Toleraine UV moisturizer). On days I wear makeup, tinted spf moisturizer as foundation. Ya know, if I were to go back in time to my younger self I’d tell me to use sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and keep up with my eye prescriptions. Sorry for the response being all over the place, I haven’t had my coffee yet. ;) Edit: between the SA cream and the Glow Tonic, I keep most texture/flaky issues at bay. Doesn’t irritate me.
thank you Jean. I have no idea why I have SH, not hereditary or shared w sibs, but we do/did all have oily skin. Grew up in the tropics, so made worse by humidity and of course, sun damage. I have worn sunscreen since my early 20's and live now in an area w/very low sun (or UV) most of the year. But the damage was done during childhood and adolescence. I will have to look for the CeraVe SA creme. That's a new one for me.
I started using vanicream cleanser and moisturizer and that’s it. I never thought I’d use something with petrolatum as the second ingredient. But let me tell you...my skin is getting better and better every single day. I had been using dr Hauschka skin care for a couple years and I only THOUGHT my skin was looking great. When in reality I was actually constantly getting tiny little whiteheads all the time. Every day, at least one. Somewhere. I thought “what the heck??” Now I know. Dr Hauschka has too many botanicals and essential oils, not to mention alcohol and natural fragrance. Thanks for convincing me that less is more!
My skin on my face feels SO much better with your recommendations in various videos. I was using moisturizer with sunscreen at night, and vaseline on my face (I live in a very dry area) because I didn't want to try a bunch of expensive products (or spend hours learning all the facts about which products would actually help my skin). Thank you for your help.
There are many gurus on UA-cam who use many high end products, all at one time. Money never seems to be an object and they are very convincing. I can’t do what they demonstrate. I prefer Dr. Dray’s approach. Less overwhelming.
I do nothing but burn, so other than a daily basis protection from sun damage over long term I also have to always use sunscreen on days out in the sun or else I am a lobster. It’s a good look 👌🏻 made that mistake a few too many times as a kid 😬
no such thing as a safe tan, so i think people who burn right away are better off, because they are less likely to seek sun as a means of getting a "natural glow"
I’m here after Cassandra Bankson spoke highly of you. Tonight was my first night using “Retrieve” tretinoin 0.05%. Thank you for your great content. Happy new year from New Zealand 🇳🇿
I was so glad you mentioned what you use in your hair can affect your face. I had been using Nioxin, and my skin had started breaking out. When I finally decided to stop using the Nioxin, the breakout started to clear up. Perhaps it was coincidence..but Im happy to know hair products can affect face. Thank you for your awesome information! ❤
Hi Dr. Andrea! Oh my goodness, I never knew lack of sleep would effect our skin.😱. I thought I was doing so well, but you found my sore spot in that I really need sleep. Ever since I retired, I am sleep deprived. Learning about everything I never had the time to do has taken over my bedtime. A schedule, I believe for myself, is in very near future. Thank you for taking the time to provide this video for us!!!💕
I get a terrible rash when I use any products containing dimethicone which is unfortunately in most sensitive skin or fragrance free products. For example I cannot use the Cerave moisturizing cream or Cerave AM/PM, however I love using the Vanicream products and so far tolerate them quite well. The hardest product for me to find was a moisturizing suncreen that was affordable and doesn't cause any issues for my skin. I have recently been using Cerves Ultralight SPF30 moisturizing lotion which is a product I have not seen anyone discuss or review yet and I am loving this. I do reapply frequently and find this to be moisturizing, and easy to use with no cast. For those rare folks out there that have a reaction to dimethicone containing products- This is a great and affordable alternative to the AM and I hope they continue to sell this.
Hi there, this was interesting to read. Except for the "all silicones are bad and unnatural" crowd we rarely hear about sensitivity to dimethicone. My scalp absolutely hates it (but my long hair loves it, so I use two different conditioners), so I've been wary of it in skin care too for a long time. Probably unneccesarily for me, but there are lots of nice products without it - sometimes products that aren't billed as sensitive or even fragrance free are actually just that, you just have to read the ingredients.
Thank you for the note on WHY UVA is bad. As a fair skinned person, I always scoff at wearing sunscreen on cloudy days or if I'm going to be in the shade because it was explained to me as "even if you're in the shade, the sun can still burn you!" And here I am with my fair skin arguing back "That's dumb, I have never been burned in the shade, therefore I'm not going to wear sunscreen every day" So thank you for explaining that UVA leads to inflammation, postinflammotory hyperpigmentation and aging. This is logical and I can actually rationalize wearing sunscreen every day for these reasons. 💜
Fantastic video! I hope this gets shared far and wide! I went with a simple routine ala Dr. Dray and managed to make it out of winter without any eczema patches! Whoo hoo!
Thank you for mentioning the compulsion to pick at skin. It sounds like a small thing, but for some of us it is a huge problem. And the shame you feel afterwards with the flare up is so embarrassing. I'm not going to defend what I do to my body because even to me it doesn't make any sense, but that doesn't make it easier to stop.
Yes, this was one of the really good parts of this video. I especially liked that dr Dray mentioned possible alternatives like stress balls etc. I'm wondering if something like peeling off nail polish would offer the same stress relief as skin picking? Or even just peeling off paint or plastic coating or something from an object? I luckily don't have much experience with this myself, and when I get bouts of it I've managed to confine it to non-exposed areas of my body. But I have enough experience to know that it is very very hard to stop if you get into it. One thing that I sometimes find soothing when I get the urge is to watch asian comedone-extracting videos, I even made a playlist for myself with the biggest, driest crunchiest cleanest ones for watching when stressed.
I’d say I truly believe in “skin-type”. I have Uber oily skin. And from what I learnt, oily skin are more often “dehydrated” therefore oil production occurs even more. Of course genes also play a part for the size of the oil glands. My biggest gripe about Brands marketing “oily skinned” products, they very often contain astringents such as alcohol in toner or moisturiser to “control the oil” when in reality, it just makes everything worse, sensitizing the skin and even hurt the skin barrier. Talking about “dehydrated” the best thing to do is hydrate it. I understand that you disagree with a toner. But a toner that does not contain astringent and contains ingredients such as panthenol and hyaluronic acid may truly help. You may find it ridiculous to layer a toner . But basically what it does is hydrating the skin. Of course you don’t have to do it full 7 times. Just three to four would do. In very very light layers. Just three drops per layer. And pat it into the skin and than seal it with something emollient or occlusive.
Just to add, i was talking about “7 skin method” . Toners are also known as “skin” in Korea. You can layer it 3-5-7 . 3 times is good for daily. I truly recommend the Etude Soonjung toner if you’d like to try. Honestly this is truly similar to what you do usually, not wiping your skin after washing and using a hyaluronic acid. But I honestly don’t do what you do haha therefore using a toner does help. And skin care is rather personal.
Green Tree dry skin often times lacks the ability to produce sebum, often dull looking and wrinkles looks more pronounced. What you can do is use humectants such as hyaluronic acid or even honey. You can layer a toner, lotion or Essence about three times and use a thick moisturiser to seal in all your hard work of applying. Or you can use an oil high in oleic acid just a few drops in place of a moisturiser. For myself where I really want to give a skin a “treatment” I go for a 3-2-1 approach. 3 layers of non astringent toners with as less bullshit ingredients such as fragrance as possible, 2 layers of Essence with humectants and other beneficial ingredients and 1 layer of moisturiser. I feel that this would be really helpful for dry skin though it’s just an occasional “treatment” for me as I have oily skin. You can add a sleeping mask as well as those really do nourish the skin as they tend to be thicker than moisturiser , really helps to seal the moisture after those layers applied and you will definitely wake up with a glowing skin. Adding a humidifier could help, or place a wet towel above you when you sleep.
Green Tree there’s no rule to skincare . It’s personal taste. How I do things , u may not like and we may prefer different textures in terms of products such as gel consistency, thick heavy cream or light watery creams. I know people who do not use cleansers in the morning and just give their face a quick rinse. I know people who saturates their cotton pads with toner and wipe off the residue left after sleep. I personally use a cleanser. Maybe you can approach it like dr dray where she applies some hyaluronic acid to her wet face.
Green Tree it kind of surprises me that someone will buy a bottle of glycerin. It is often times a cheap ingredient present in moisturisers or even the cleansers that I use. But it is rather moisturising.
My scalp has SD (seborrheic dermatitis) and my face is extremely dry. It's always been that way. I use Nivea blue tin as a moisturizer (so yes, that dry) and for my scalp Nizoral 2%, whenever I get flare-ups. My mom has normal facial skin and is extremely dry on the scalp. My dad is oily on the face and has SD on the scalp as well. Odd how that works, isn't it? :D There are often creams in the drugstore especially for dry skin and I give them to my mom, because they are just way too light for me (even La Roche Posay, they work with special water in their products and it's dehydrating, even the things marketed for dry skin). It's why I use the Nivea tin. At least it works for me. I find that most products in the drugstore are geared towards normal skin, no matter what is on the label.
If you’re in Europe, keep an eye open for a brand named ‚Mixa‘. They are a French company and their products have only recently been introduced to German drugstores...no idea if they are easily available elsewhere. I really like their ‚CICA-Creme‘. It’s very similar in consistency to good old Nivea but perfume free and it has 5% Panthenol. They market it as an all purpose creme for face, body and hands...and indeed it is. I mainly use it for my dry hands, but also put in on my lips and wherever else I need something more heavy duty than normal moisturizer. The prize point is about 5 €/50ml...which is pretty decent, imo.
Just re-watched this and it was brilliant. I can't use water on my face every day because it's too drying, but at the moment I'm struggling to get all the sunscreen off without it. Water dries my face, so then I go in with a moisturizer, which re-clogs my pores right up.
Thank you for a very informative talk, you have covered everything in our daily lives. I pretty much do everything I am supposed to but I will be watching this over and over.
I think I'm somewhere between a type I and type II. I mostly burn if I don't have sun protection, sometimes even if I do, and I get freckles. Blue-green eyes, pale skin, dark hair, my skin barely tans, but I can tan, just a bit. Sunscreen and myself are now friends.
Yeah i think people who burn easily wind up better off sometimes because they are more likely to avoid sun, fearing a burn, versus someone who tans and seeks the sun to experience the "joys" of tanning (no such thing as a safe tan)
This answered alot of my dry skin questions. i cant seem to find a good moisturizer that doesnt sting after being on a while. i am breaking the bank trying to find something that is comforting. my derm had a baby and wont be in til Feb. The very nerve!!! how dare she have a life???? havent gotten to the other vid yet maybe that will help.
I had no idea about the skim milk study and acne. Thanks for this info because I WAS a consumer of skim milk for lower caloric intake. Enjoy your day, and thanks for keeping us informed!💜💜💜
Your Videos are very informative and helpful in understanding skin Health and especially in this oversaturated world of products! You really break it down into bite size pieces. Definitely my favourite dermatologist on UA-cam! An you shoe you don’t have to spend loads to get good products! You seem to have a lot of integrity, which especially in this world of people constantly endorsing products for their own benefit. I much appreciate your knowledge and help as a viewer! Xx
Satan invented them. Along with control top pantyhose. Instant muffin top. I digress. Oh, skin type. Usually burn initially but could tan if I didn't slather myself with sunscreen. I got a careful, gradual, natural tan about five years ago and instantly aged my skin at least 5 years. I won't do that again. Hmm, who knew dermatologists and cosmetics ad writers speak different languages? TY, Doc, for making sense. It's refreshing and unfortunately all too rare. I've always thought Americans shower too much. Instead of extra showers in hot humid weather, I like to soak in Aveeno (generic) oatmeal bath (warm, not hot) and only actually cleanse Those Certain Areas. Then slather moisturizer on damp skin. I only shower about 3X a week in winter. Nobody shuns me.
This is so very interesting. I so wish my skin was as flawless as yours. For 63 I can live with my few lines and wrinkles, its the age spots,my once cute freckles that banded together and made big ones. lol Hydroquinone was a no no for my skin.
Dr. Dray, i'm learning so much from these videos. Other than you being a highly knowable dermatologist, you are and honest, kind & thoughtful person. Much love :) And yes because of your advice, i'm wearing sun screen all the time except night.
Great information! So much hype on the internet/you tube for all these skin care fixers and your channel has helped me to read what my skin needs, it can be different from week to week😊 thanks Andrea😘💕
Currently trying to clear up PIH (due to breakouts) that has been lingering on my skin for YEARS! I mean, almost a decade 😭 Edit: I love the advice regarding hair. If you have an oily scalp and you’re thinking of getting bangs, please reconsider. That’s the PIH I’m trying to clear right now, as I always had bangs in my teens and even in my early 20s. I got bangs mostly to hide my forehead pimples but they actually ended up making the situation way worse! The PIH on my cheeks and chin due to adult acne in my early 20s seems to be much easier to clear up for some reason.
Hi Dr. Dray, I just love your channel 💜 you’re such a doll for sharing all your skin care Knowledge with us...and you have a lovely personality...thanks from Tina and have a blessed Easter
We have very hard water, and we are saving for a water softener. Until then, I buy water to wash my face.... I know that sounds a little crazy! It has reduced my skin problems.
Karen F - you are smart not crazy 😊. When people see me reapplying sunscreen on cloudy days, they think I am crazy. Even my friends who are family medicine doctors. It used to bother me but not anymore.
I find myself picking at my blackheads not because I’m nervous or anxious, but because they’re quite large and it looks gross. I just want them out of there. So, you wouldn’t recommend extracting those at all? I notice the 1st thing dermatologists do is extract those. Why is it bad to do the same at home. Given I use an extraction tool, use gloves, and disinfect the tools frequently? I use salicylic acid but that can only go so far and it dries my face out. I wouldn’t want to use anything harsher (prescription) because it would be even more drying.
I so know what you mean, I used to nearly have an obsession with blackheads on my face and for years I would nightly go thru an extraction process to purge my pores of blackheads. I couldn't stand them and it drove me crazy. Of course this process was a vicious cycle as they would come back and I believe I was just likely making my pores larger. This is what ended up working for me and I no longer have this issue and it was something Dr.Dray mentioned in one of her video's. Try using salicylic acid wash after cleansing your face for a bit and then rinse it off. I usually cleanse my skin with a gentle cleanser then use a salicylic wash (I use one that is 2%) and let it sit on my face and then I go about washing my hair, body etc and then rinse my face and do not apply anything on my face after that. That way the medication it's not sitting on your face all night and extensively drying it out. For me this process has been a game changer and really improved my blackhead situation tremendously. It wasn't overnight but with consistentency of this treatment I went from being nearly OCD over blackhead extractions to not even thinking about them because the blackheads have been nearly eliminated. Sorry for the long message but I have so been where you are and I never thought I'd find a remedy that actually worked. Something so simple turned out to be so effective.
manifestingjayde25 thank you so much for sharing your experience. Your comment wasn’t too long in my opinion, as I like details. So thank you. I will keep at it with the salicylic acid. 2% is what I have too. But it’s only been a couple of weeks. I, like many people want results overnight. So, thanks for reminding me that most things aren’t overnight and I have to be more patient. Your comment gives me hope. 🙏
I too wanted results rapidly and why I have drawers of products that didn't perform immediately and then I would purchase another lotion/potion that promised miracles...sigh..I would literally try to extract every blackhead at night or I didn't feel my face was clean and it drove me nuts. if I only had all of that money back I wasted from products..haha. I did make peace with my large pores because it just is what it is but now that they are much less clogged thanks to the salicylic regimen I described I don't fret over it as much at all. Good Luck! oh...and I totally stopped using any scrubs on my face too....it really was too harsh and I think made things worse but I was brainwashed into thinking I had to use something gritty on my face to remove the blackheads....I was so wrong.
All of your videos are extremely helpful but this one is exceptional. Thank you! My acne prone skin seems to have gotten more sensitive and dry with the use of Differin. Even if I use it every other night.
I'm surprised she didn't mention the effects that smoking has on the skin along with alcohol because there is probably more people who smoke daily than drink daily.
I have oily skin and get closed comedones all the time. My esthetician told me that I need to use oil free skincare due to my oily skin, however I’ve started to get some dry patches now. I also tried a salicylic acid wash for my closed comedones, which seems to be making dry patches worse. Any advice? I love your channel!!
This was helpful I live in Minnesota and it's really cold so I suffer from dry skin but I also have acne but I know how to care for my skin now thanks to you 😊
Hi, Dr. Dray! Another great Q&A--thank you! I was thinking about what you said about picking at acne and keeping your hands away from your face when you have a breakout--I have a lot of trouble with this! I found that the hydrocolloid pimple patches (I like the Cosrx ones, but there are dozens out there) have helped me a lot. They keep the pimples clean, protect them from UV rays somewhat, and they aren't irritating to wear. The ones I use are not medicated and they're tinted, so I do wear them during the day. (Well, I probably shouldn't--you can still tell I'm wearing them--but I think my coworkers are used to them now!) I have a question for your next Q&A. Years ago, an aesthetician used some sort of light therapy on my cheeks to deal with either acne or PIH (or both). Ever since, I have these blue patches on my cheeks. I'm planning on talking with my dermatologist about them. So, my question is: what is the best way to prepare for a trip to the dermatologist's so that I can make the most of the limited amount of time we have? What should I take with me (if anything)?
the cosrx one are awesome for that, and i tell people to do something similar with a bandaid (though cosrx is just as good); not sure when your appt is, but stay tuned as i plan to address this in a Q&A soon
Great video! I have dry skin and live in humid sunny Florida. Lol but I also have hypothyroidism so I just lather up with moisturizer and sunscreen. And that helps a lot. I also try to avoid the sun with I can because I burn never tan.
Wow I learnt something today. I'm just so confused by what to use to benefit my skin without piling up, vit a, vit c, ceramides, squalene, Hyaluronate acid, niacinamide?
@@Kelly-pp1et thank you that does help! Since my post, I have been using HA and agree with you, it just dehydrated my skin even when I apply moisturiser straight after. I use cerave pm moisturiser too and it is amazing, really hydrates my skin. Thank you
Using products for oily skin back in my young adult age caused so much dryness and irritation, and then acne. They contained a lot of alcohol, and other irritants. I had so much blind trust in the cosmetic industry. Thanks for the info, as usual.
You're videos are very thorough, thoughtful and informative. Thank you for interjecting your professional knowledge with your happy disposition and sometimes, your opinion! I've been subscribed to you for a few months and always value your work💟💐🌈
Thank you always for the Nuggets of knowledge. I have been giving to my acne prone teen s/ milk. I definitely learn something new every day, thanks to you.
Thank you dr dray. My skin is either dry ,normal, or oily depending on the weather and such. But I am prone to hyperkeratosis and milia. and acne prone.
It never occurred to me that introducing water could actually further dry out the skin. I think you mentioned in a previous video that water introduction was also necessary for the skin, however, so the face should be washed twice a day. Is this recommended for dry skin if I am using products containing hyaluronic acid and other water-retaining molecules?
My nose is dry and flaky but also oily and on the left side of my face next to my mouth is a little dry with a bit of roughness I don't know what kind of face wash and moisturizer to use
I have light skin and blue eyes. My skin turns red then it burns, my kids and my brother calls me lobster 🦞 when I turn red! I don’t like going out to the sun to long and I’m on medication also. I noticed that my skin is changing as I get older I’m 41 my skin itching and burning with some face brand. And I live I Indio California where it is very hot!!!
What a great , informative video! I appreciate the list of products you added but how do we know which to use for which "skin type"? I am researching for my 28 yr old son who has dry, sensitive, acne prone skin and has asked for my advice so I naturally turned to you! I will will share your information about other factors that influence the skin. If you could make suggestions from your product list it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Dr. Dray, can you talk to us about dry brushing and what it is? I hear a lot of other beauty folks talking about this - I have never done it, but they apparently swear by it. I think I probably already know what you will say, but I thought it might be another topic you could address from a Derm’s perspective! Love your videos! :)
Thank you Dr. Dray! I used to think I only had oily skin, and ignored the sensitive skin with rosacea/perioral dermatitis. The more I used salicylic acid products (ex. Neutrogena), it worsened. I now use Cerave and have fewer inflammations. Thank you for the proper education on skin care!
Hello Dr Dray, I found your channel less than 2 weeks ago and oh my... absolutely love it, thank you so much for all the information you share with us. I have a question, I've been on Retin A for more than a year with no visible results and I think thanks to you i found out why... I didn't sunscreen very much 😔, now I do, I use Retin A for anti aging, but I would like to use Differin, do you think it's ok!!!, like one day Retin A, then the next day Differin, I usually take a break on the weekend. Can I use both... can they be use together or best if one day one , another day the other one. Hope you can help me clear my question, and hopefully I can make Retin A work for me now that thanks to your videos you convinced me to SUNSCREEN 🤗
Just hearing her say she asked patients what would happen if they went out on a sunny day without sunscreen gave me anxiety. I would be so seriously burned within, like, 30 minutes. FT1, for sure.
Hello Dr.Dray, I feel like the older I get (59) the more oily I am and I hate it because I also have deep wrinkles in places on my face, so if I use moisturizer for the wrinkles, I am just that much more greasy faced so what product would work best for me at this time? I also still break out! I am on no medications. Thank you for such informative info.
I'm 20, I live in Malta (Europe). I don't use skin products, I just wash my face with warm and cold water in the morning. I drink water and do sleep well. My face when I touch it, I wouldn't say it is oily or dry. However, when I touch my forehead it is slightly oily but the rest of my face isn't. From a very young age, I turn red from my cheeks (embarrassment, when I'm underneath a quilt, when doing something like (walking), staying in the sun and then, of course, it leads to a tan. I'd love to use something basic to take care of my skin. Like, apply moisturiser and sunscreen on a daily basis. There are so many products out there that it's confusing for me. Like because I mentioned turning red, do I go for sensitive products or do I go for combination? Thank you.
Then Andrea, I assume for your answer, there isn't a good plucking eyebrows technique, because all of them harm our skin and hair follicles, I'd to change the question to ¿what is the less damaging way to pluck our eyebrows?. Thank you.☺️
I have been struggling with for 3 years moderate to severe scalp inflammation on my scalp leading to hair loss such as white/red papules, vesicles, pustules, cystic ruptures, and macules. Plus post inflammatory pigmentation that turns yellow or white. It orginally begun at the top front and two sides at the back (behind ears). With also red dots. As when it spread the pattern was in straight lines or in clusters. The red lesions or pustules crusts over (yellow) then new lesions develop like a vicious cycle. I also developed triangular shaped flat raised patches that are in clusters or in a straight line that turns white after but remains raised. And thickened skin when inflammed. I have been suffering and have not really socialized the past 2 years not complete my schooling due to the pain and embarrassment of hair loss.
It got triggered after a salon visit. It orginally thought by my physician that I had psoriasis and I question whether allergic reaction. I also had an oily scalp which then turned super dry and inflammed 2 years later.
The 5 dermatologists I have seen indicated: Folliculitus due to bacteria or yeast. Inflamed follicles. Telogen effluvium. Androgenic alopecia. Just dandruff. Sebhorric dermatitis due to yeast then into infection. I have been treated with: amaxocillin, keflex, doxycicline, levaquin, biaxin, minocyclyne, fusiderm.....past 3 years. With very minimal breaks in between ( no longer than 2 weeks). The topical steroids worsened situation causing more ruptures. And was tapered on prednisone on 3 terms. And was on Accutane for 6 months (dose 40 mg 3 to 5 times weekly). It worked shortly then scalp turned swollen.
I had 3 puncture biopsies, shaved biopsy, fungal scraping of yellow crust, and 3 or more swabs. Indicated: vast amount of neutriphils and leukocytes, fibrosis superior anagen phase follicle possible previous site folliculitis, and benign fibroma due to granular with red yellow appearance. ringworm and fungus negative. mrsa negative. Normal microflora. Bacilli possibly cornyform but no spores/growth.
I am struggling with my scalp and it has been the worst past year. I do not know what to do. And I question if I have psoriasis instead especially when all tests were negative for culture other than microflora. In pictures few years previouslly, I noticed I had white papules on scalp in addition to red dots and triangle line of flat raised patches minimally but no burning pain at the time when 24 and 28. The burning and severe hair loss occurred at 30, and I am now nearly 33. Please help me.
I am so desperate and I hope for a better assessment. I don't know what to do as they see it as a problem. But I am told I don't know prescribed antibiotics and such. And my physician is not willing to refer. My reumatologist says psoriasis is connected to osteoarthritis in my foot which prevented me to walk sporadically past year. I have also been turned away. So I have decided to seek naturopathic docter route.
Doc, I HAVE to shower 2x a day - morning and evening. I just can't do 1x a day. My skin IS dry, but I moisturize - face to toes. It is probably why I have dry skin and hair.......
While using differin every other day, can I get my eyebrows threaded? I’ve been on differin for about a month and am still purging but my skin doesn’t feel sensitive to it
I really struggle with pulling out my hair. I guess better than my face, I assume not so great for my scalp. It's crazy how your brain can focus on something as normal as split ends and turn searching for them into a compulsive harmful behavior. The brain really is something.
I do this too. I developed it as an anxious behavior during a really stressful time, and I find myself doing it whenever I'm feeling anxiety or stress now.
Always looking forward to your educational video! More please! 😁 P.S. That headband brings out the healthy glow of your complexion. You look bright and cheery! 😍😍😍
Great video!! With regard to bathing less to help with dryness, do I have to wash Differin off in the morning? (I use it at night.) Can I just put moisturizer/sunscreen on top of whatever’s left and go about my day? Thanks!!
Very informative, the scenario you spoke of happened to me. I was using your recommended neutrogena oil free cleanser and neutrogena oil free moisturiser and I liked it. It's almost empty now but one day when I was using it (by chance, it was the start of my period) I experienced this stinging, burning pain. My face was full on red and it took a while for the pain to calm down. Should I move on to another products or should I just stop using it until my period is over?
You have convinced me to wear sunscreen every day in Ireland where it is constantly cold and grey and my family thinks I've gone insane
You and me both!
I'm in Norfolk, England and my family think i'm mad because of the sunscreen too!
so happy to hear!
Your amazing and please keep up the awesome work you do😊
I'm interested! What did u do to improve your skin?
I'm a new subscriber, so not fully educated aha.
I'm interested as well!! What did you do? What's changed?
I would love for you to cover common skin changes during perimenopause & menopause. I’m knocking on menopause’s door & my skin has really changed in my 40s. I’ve even developed rosacea within the last year. My poor skin has always been dry but now it’s on another level.
Shannon Graham Great idea... I would enjoy an informational video on this too.
Me too!
Shannon Graham would love her to do one as well
great idea
Count me in...my skin is all over the map since going through menopause!
How thoughtful of you Dr Dray to encourage people to seek help if they’re experiencing stress, anxiety, depression.
Thanks!
:)
Hi Jean! Same age and situation as you. Can you share some of the products you use? Thank you so much.
Sorry for the response being all over the place, I haven’t had my coffee yet. ;)
Edit: between the SA cream and the Glow Tonic, I keep most texture/flaky issues at bay.
7:23 is where it starts
I've never thought to look up the UV Index...the high for today in Portland, OR is 0.7. In other news, water is wet :p.
it was 9 here in houston today
My skin on my face feels SO much better with your recommendations in various videos. I was using moisturizer with sunscreen at night, and vaseline on my face (I live in a very dry area) because I didn't want to try a bunch of expensive products (or spend hours learning all the facts about which products would actually help my skin). Thank you for your help.
glad to hear :)

So funny how much the cosmetic industry influences people
tell me about it
Wow hi Marla ☺
Hello to you too!! Sorry for the late reply Tina. I haven't been near my computer much. I always enjoy listening to Dr. Dray.
There are many gurus on UA-cam who use many high end products, all at one time. Money never seems to be an object and they are very convincing. I can’t do what they demonstrate. I prefer Dr. Dray’s approach. Less overwhelming.
Dr Dray jhh
I do nothing but burn, so other than a daily basis protection from sun damage over long term I also have to always use sunscreen on days out in the sun or else I am a lobster. It’s a good look 👌🏻 made that mistake a few too many times as a kid 😬
no such thing as a safe tan, so i think people who burn right away are better off, because they are less likely to seek sun as a means of getting a "natural glow"
U have so much content I need to watch omg I’m overwhelmed ily ❤️
I’m here after Cassandra Bankson spoke highly of you. Tonight was my first night using “Retrieve” tretinoin 0.05%. Thank you for your great content. Happy new year from New Zealand 🇳🇿
I was so glad you mentioned what you use in your hair can affect your face. I had been using Nioxin, and my skin had started breaking out. When I finally decided to stop using the Nioxin, the breakout started to clear up. Perhaps it was coincidence..but Im happy to know hair products can affect face. Thank you for your awesome information! ❤
:)
Hi Dr. Thank you for taking the time to provide this video for us!!!💕
very much so! Hope you get some good rest Ms christina
For those rare folks out there that have a reaction to dimethicone containing products- This is a great and affordable alternative to the AM and I hope they continue to sell this.
i am glad to hear the ultralight one is going well..it is nice :)
As a fair skinned person, I always scoff at wearing sunscreen on cloudy days or if I'm going to be in the shade because it was explained to me as "even if you're in the shade, the sun can still burn you!" And here I am with my fair skin arguing back "That's dumb, I have never been burned in the shade, therefore I'm not going to wear sunscreen every day"
So thank you for explaining that UVA leads to inflammation, postinflammotory hyperpigmentation and aging. This is logical and I can actually rationalize wearing sunscreen every day for these reasons. 💜
I don't always comment but I'm always watching 😉
:) Happy Tuesday
2020? every video of hers is so helpful
Fantastic video! I hope this gets shared far and wide! I went with a simple routine ala Dr. Dray and managed to make it out of winter without any eczema patches! Whoo hoo!
Thanks!
Totoro on your cup! Huge Studio Ghibli fan here!
i love those movies!
Hi Baddest Donut, have you watched Dr. Dray's video about "oils", I recommend you it, I learned a lot with it.🙂
My scalp has SD (seborrheic dermatitis) and my face is extremely dry.
Marleen G. I completely relate.
that is because seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disease, not a skin type...the management is specific and often requires medication creams
Oh gosh, yes (light bulb moment); you make it sound so easy! :)
Rara Avis, they have been around in Belgium for quite some time. They even have a site here: www.mixa.be/NL/Home/Index
Just re-watched this and it was brilliant.
I can't use water on my face every day because it's too drying, but at the moment I'm struggling to get all the sunscreen off without it. Water dries my face, so then I go in with a moisturizer, which re-clogs my pores right up.
Thanks!
Thank you for a very informative talk, you have covered everything in our daily lives. I pretty much do everything I am supposed to but I will be watching this over and over.
Thanks!
You always make me think about things from a different perspective. Thank you for that.
Enjoy your day, and thanks for keeping us informed!💜💜💜
yeah skim milk has a higher glycemic index
Your Videos are very informative and helpful in understanding skin Health and especially in this oversaturated world of products! You really break it down into bite size pieces. Definitely my favourite dermatologist on UA-cam! An you shoe you don’t have to spend loads to get good products! You seem to have a lot of integrity, which especially in this world of people constantly endorsing products for their own benefit. I much appreciate your knowledge and help as a viewer! Xx
Got a upf hat over the weekend :) I could hear you in my head saying “you’re doing great sweetie”
good investment!
Clouds do not protect us ☁️☁️☁️ Wisdom from Dr. Dray 🙏
Magnifying mirrors are the devil’s work. Fact. 😬😆
MARY MARTZ 😆👌
lol
Theresa Levitt that's the Truth, but at my age I need it☺
Satan invented them.
Theresa Michele yessssss Lmaoooooooo I agree 100% omg that’s difinitely the enemy’s invention.lmaooooooo
Always fascinating when you hit your groove educating us, Doc! Blessings! Jackie in NY state
Thanks!
This is so very interesting. I so wish my skin was as flawless as yours. For 63 I can live with my few lines and wrinkles, its the age spots,my once cute freckles that banded together and made big ones. lol Hydroquinone was a no no for my skin.
Yeah hydroquinone can be pretty irritating
I've been binge watching your videos and I'm in love with this channel❤❤
Thanks!
L-O-V-E the orange headband! 🧡
Thanks!
Dr. Dray, i'm learning so much from these videos. Other than you being a highly knowable dermatologist, you are and honest, kind & thoughtful person. Much love :) And yes because of your advice, i'm wearing sun screen all the time except night.
You are such a gem. Thank you for doing these videos. I have become so much better informed.
You look so radiant in this video! Happy Monday!
Thanks!
Great information! So much hype on the internet/you tube for all these skin care fixers and your channel has helped me to read what my skin needs, it can be different from week to week😊 thanks Andrea😘💕
Thanks!
Now I understand why my oily skin type likes dry skin products😅
Currently trying to clear up PIH (due to breakouts) that has been lingering on my skin for YEARS! I mean, almost a decade 😭
Edit: I love the advice regarding hair.
I've been watching your videos for a few weeks and I'm so happy to stumble onto your channel! I love the advice on what my skin really needs
Thanks! Glad to hear
You are the best Dr Dray!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻Your videos are always so informative!!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks!
Hi Dr. Dray, I just love your channel 💜 you’re such a doll for sharing all your skin care Knowledge with us...and you have a lovely personality...thanks from Tina and have a blessed Easter
Thank you so much and you have a wonderful easter too
I was recently classified at Fitzpatrick type 1. Then my dermatologist said my spf 20 and 15 lotions were NOT acceptable.
@@Kelly-pp1et In the last 2 years I have massively upped my sunscreen game :)
It used to bother me but not anymore.
glad to hear Ms Karen :)
I also have very hard water and didn’t realize how it was drying my skin until I washed my face with soft water. What a difference!
That don’t sounds crazy, people in Paris tend to use spray thermal water instead of regular water because they have calcareous water too
I find myself picking at my blackheads not because I’m nervous or anxious, but because they’re quite large and it looks gross.
Katie Lee - I agreee this was exceptional 😊.
Thanks! yes that is common
Thank you for another interesting video. Yes, hard water is damaging to everything, I see the difference when I am back in Italy, at m6 parents
It really can cause problems
I have eczema and acne so this will definitely be interesting to figure out! Thanks Dr Dray, solving my skin mystery 😊
F H me too 🤔
:)
Thanks so much Dr Dray! Very informative video!!💝💝💝
Thanks so much Ms Beth and I hope you are having a nice evening
I'm surprised she didn't mention the effects that smoking has on the skin along with alcohol because there is probably more people who smoke daily than drink daily.
What a blessing you are! So much info to assimilate. You must be a genius for sure!
Thank you so much Ms Jessie
This was really informative and great guidance. I always appreciate your kindness and compassion.
Thanks Ms Susan
Bluebonnet Festival in Chappell Hill is April 14 and 15...bluebonnets are beautiful this year.
So pretty!
This was helpful I live in Minnesota and it's really cold so I suffer from dry skin but I also have acne but I know how to care for my skin now thanks to you 😊
stay warm!
I'm so glad I found your channel! You have provided me with so much information and come across as such a nice person
Thanks! I am glad you are here
Hi, Dr.
Great! Thanks!
Great video! I have dry skin and live in humid sunny Florida. Lol but I also have hypothyroidism so I just lather up with moisturizer and sunscreen. And that helps a lot. I also try to avoid the sun with I can because I burn never tan.
Thanks! Florida and Houston are weather twins, lol
Same for me with st ives apricot scrub :)
i get acne on my forehead ,side burns, nose, chin, eyebrows, cheeks HELP
Deziray Cali same 😖
You're videos are very thorough, thoughtful and informative. Thank you for interjecting your professional knowledge with your happy disposition and sometimes, your opinion! I've been subscribed to you for a few months and always value your work💟💐🌈
Thanks!
I really liked the direction this video ended up taking
Thank you always for the Nuggets of knowledge.
I have been giving to my acne prone teen s/ milk.
I definitely learn something new every day, thanks to you.
:)
Thank you dr dray. My skin is either dry ,normal, or oily depending on the weather and such. But I am prone to hyperkeratosis and milia. and acne prone.
It seems like I experience from post inflammatory pigmentation too
:)
I have whitest skin now i religious ly put sunscreen thanks to you
It never occurred to me that introducing water could actually further dry out the skin.
Thank you!
Thanks!
Dr. Dray, can you talk to us about dry brushing and what it is? I hear a lot of other beauty folks talking about this - I have never done it, but they apparently swear by it. I think I probably already know what you will say, but I thought it might be another topic you could address from a Derm’s perspective! Love your videos! :)
i have...do not do that.....two words for you to google image "macular amyloidosis"
Dr Dray ok! will never do! thanks :)
I really like how much I learn from your videos. ❤️ You made several points that I will incorporate into my routine (and my teenage sons’ routines).
Thanks!
Thank you so much! I took you advice and have an appt with a dermatologist this week. Now I know what to expect during the appt.
So glad to hear you were able to get an appt :)
Thank you Dr. Dray!
I used to think I only had oily skin, and ignored the sensitive skin with rosacea/perioral dermatitis. The more I used salicylic acid products (ex. Neutrogena), it worsened. I now use Cerave and have fewer inflammations. Thank you for the proper education on skin care!
glad to hear things are getting better
Thank you for such informative info.
fewer products...just stick to sunscreen and skip the rest for awhile
Thank you.☺️
to not do it
Thank you.xoxo
I’ve been on differin for about a month and am still purging but my skin doesn’t feel sensitive to it
it is recommended to stop a few days in advance of threading
I really struggle with pulling out my hair. I guess better than my face, I assume not so great for my scalp. It's crazy how your brain can focus on something as normal as split ends and turn searching for them into a compulsive harmful behavior. The brain really is something.
JessieBanana I used to do this too.....what helps me now is keeping it up in a ponytail.
I do this too. I developed it as an anxious behavior during a really stressful time, and I find myself doing it whenever I'm feeling anxiety or stress now.
that is pretty common
Always looking forward to your educational video! More please! 😁
P.S. That headband brings out the healthy glow of your complexion. You look bright and cheery! 😍😍😍
Thanks!
Hi Dr. Dray. Your skin looks great what ever you are currently doing!!!!
Thank you so much :)
Great video!!
With regard to bathing less to help with dryness, do I have to wash Differin off in the morning? (I use it at night.) Can I just put moisturizer/sunscreen on top of whatever’s left and go about my day?
Thanks!!
no, yes
Thank you so much for this very informative video Dr. Dray. Excellent as always!

Thanks!
Great info as always! Thank you! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks!
Mind-blowing truth !! Thank you !
Should I move on to another products or should I just stop using it until my period is over?
you can try going back and/or using less
Hi dr Dray! Another invaluable advice from you. Am sick at home so catching up on stuff that I missed ☺. Thank you!
