Are You Experienced is truly one of the greatest albums of all time
Yes - so right!
Are You Experienced is great but in my opinion I prefer “Axis: Bold As Love” over that album. That album sonically, musically, lyrically, and guitar playing was a lot better.
I think electric ladyland is the best
It is an astounding debut album. Almost ANY of the tracks is worthy of a greatest hits. I think all of the songs get regular airplay.
Which version do you prefer
I could listen to Hendrix's 3 studio albums a thousand times and they'd still sound fresh. Incredible quality art will stand the test of time.
I hear that 💯💯💯 I’ve always thought of Band of Gypsies was his 4th and last album. It’s a live album but all new material.

In '68 (I was age 14) Hendrix became my favorite of that time period and
so it's fun to revisit all the recordings. Jimi was ahead of his time.
I can really recommend a Jimi Hendrix Experience album called "Radio One", which is a selection of songs he recorded live for various BBC Radio 1 shows. You get an amazing version of Fire, Killing Floor, Spanish Castle Magic, a cover of Day Tripper and a Jimi improv Radio 1 jingle.
Right on! I've found that BBC recordings are often some of the best live recordings of the bands I like and that one is no exception! A couple of my favs from that are Love or Confusion and Little Miss Lover and yeah you gotta love the Radio One jingle.

I think one of the great things about Jimi Hendrix is, he seemed like a humble person. It seemed like he considered other guitarists better than himself.

The great thing is that his personality shines through in his music. It always enhances my mood.
My favorite Hendrix album is Axis: Bold as love. “Spanish Castle Magic” is one of my favorite songs of all time. “Castles made of sand”, my God, how many artists have tried to imitate that sound???? Love that song. And obviously “Bold as love”, what a great freaking solo. Jimi in my opinion is in the top 3 most influential guitar players of all time if not the top 1.
The guitar on "Bold as Love" is wonderful, but I actually think that the lyrics are among the best he ever wrote.

Castles Made of Sand is a beautiful song. I don't dig the verses of Spanish Castle Magic,but the riffs are cool as hell
Carlos-some majestic tones on Axis'....gorgeous sonics that take you to another place and time. As far as influential, he's gotta be on top.....then Eddie!

I've been listening to Hendrix since my 9th birthday in 1976. One of my uncles gave the gift of Jimi (Electric Ladyland) which is still my favorite LP today in 2020 but the LP, "Cry of Love" ranks right up there, too. Yes, it was released and produced after his passing but there are still some real gems on it. Cry of Love shows where Jimi was going as the world rolled into the 1970s ;-)
"Electric Ladyland " is an absolute classic. Love the other two studio albums but it is just above them.

The first JH song I heard as a kid was Stone Free. I was not prepared, it hit me straight between the eyes and I've been a fan ever since.

'Driving South' from those sessions is one of his greatest live performances imho.

Axis is my favorite, Followed to Electric Ladyland and Are You Experienced. But like you said, not much separates them. So many great rock guitar players but he was a monster who didn’t just revolutionize guitar playing but wrote fantastic songs and the studio experimentations....

what a lot of people overlook is that Jimi's songwriting was so good not your average guitar hero who could not only play with such great skill but it' what sets him apart from all the other great guitar front persons out there
I always heard a rumor that Hendrix was preparing to work with Miles Davis at some point, when he died. I have often imagined how great that would've been...
Read they were booked in the studio but sadly never happened. Miles was introduced to jimi by John Mclaughlin, who took Miles to the cinema to see Monterey pop. Miles apparently sat there saying GOD DAMN
It was said that Miles held out because he wanted too much money they also tried to get Paul McCartney through a telegram to join them fact
I read in one of his biographies saying they had a conversation at a party about recording together. And that was far as it went.
can imagine him going full jazz rock in the 70s, would have been amazing. he definitely would have been cranking more classic albums out.
Jimi had been jamming with jazz cats and had been meeting with arranger extraordinaire Gil Evans .
Gil was putting together a jazz band arrangement of Jimi' s music . The album was released and was released under "The Gil Evans Orchestra plays the music of Jimi Hendrix." I remember seeing it in one of the larger record stores and there was only one copy but I didn't buy it. I'm pretty sure it is a rare album and would be worth listening to .
Jimi Hendrix - Icon ! The man guitar 🎸 playing was out of this world! His playing was ungodly. Electric Ladyland is my favorite album. He was the reason why other guitarists was playing the guitar was because of his playing! The other albums was great also.

Jimi was the total package in my opinion. The man was an incredible guitar player on top of being an amazing songwriter. There are lots of great guitar players that arent as good songwriters.
Top notch Pete! some great stuff here! there's a lot you haven't shown but probably due to the time needed. You havnt shown the singles, i have 8 from when he was alive- 3 that were released and 5 that came from juke boxes. The juke box ones were from a box that was dismantled and thrown away!!!! it had mixes from studio recordings that werent released -
great job pete. I am a official Hendrix nut so I have everything. And I mean everything! Before I rank my collection I would like to suggest a few for you too look for. 1- radio one or the 2 disc BBC session, has some great early Hendrix. highlights are: a wicked driving south , an amazing burning of the midnight lamp (massive wah wah), cover tunes like hound dog and day tripper, and if you get the 2 disc version you get the Lulu tv broadcast which include the famous version of sunshine of your love as a tribute to the cream who had just formally disbanded, 2-the box set west coast Seattle boy is very good as it has a nice chronological approach to Hendrix's music, you get a whole disc of his early stuff before the experience and a good amount of unreleased stuff including the last track which is from the infamous Black Gold tapes (google that), 3-I would also suggest getting the winterland box set, even though you have those discs the box set is worth it. order or download the amazon version as it has a cool set of bonus tracks including jimi's cover of dear mr. fantasy, (a bonus disc from 1968 fillmore west) 4-seek out a live disc called the jimi Hendrix concerts (1982) its a live compilation disc but it has great selections.

but really as you've said these are pretty equal. not much separating them

1- band of gypsys- machine gun guitar solo.. what else can be said
2- Woodstock live- jimi is off the chart on this one, he is playing on a different planet
3-monterey pop- where it all began, jimi the showman..
4-the jimi Hendrix concerts (1982) aforementioned collection of great live tracks, the red house is superb and he does are you experienced a rare live track
5-winterland box set - or any version really. Jimi and the band were on for these shows.
6-live at berkeley 1970-best live version of hey baby
7-san diego 1969 (from the stages box set)- great set has a tremendous I don't live today
8-isle of wight festival
9-atlanta pop 1970

1-1st rays of the new rising son- which pretty much has all of cry of love and rainbow bridge. Although I would suggest people seek out rainbow bridge, it has the most unique recording of the star spangled banner and a wicked live version of hear my train( which was used on the next listing blues)
2-blues- great collection of Hendrix otherworldly blues

I got into the blues in the 90's - that Blues compilation came out at the right time and that one is near and dear to me. That cover that is a collage of all the blues icons, whoever designed that I would love to hug, it is SO awesome!!! Also a shout out to the "Ultimate Experience" compilation I had ... really good flow to it, solid compilation.
in the early 80s in the uk a brilliant double live compilation came out called jimi Hendrix concerts with a yellow painting of jimi on the cover. THE best live performances for me. Loved War heroes as you are right, midnight is awesome. The version of red house on In the West, is mindblowing to me. Also a shout out to Mitch and his playing. Saw a recent programme with Nick mason and Stuart Copeland chatting and their fave drummer is Mitch. Have seen tons of Hendrix tributes and some are great but they are always spoiled by the drummer not being a jazzer !!!
I also agree that The Jimi Hendrix Concerts album is probably the best live compilation of his. LOVE the extended version of Stone Free on there, with it's stellar guitar solo.
Mitch was a jazzer...quite Elvin Jones influenced.

I bought the album because as a 13 year old I had watched with amazement a Hendrix film on TV. Soon after the Woodstock film was shown and I sat through the 3 hrs to see Jimi at the end (which opened my eyes to so much great music) Played Hendrix concerts to death !!!!!
Very good clip Pete; thanks a lot. I learned a lot. Big Hendrix fan but not to the point of knowing all about the boots and post releases. Made me realize I need to get some more recordings by him.
Thanks for this video. I missed the Hendrix bandwagon. I knew of his classic material because of hearing it played to death on FM radio in the 1970s. But I rediscovered his work in recent years. Your list was outstanding (and I am not surprised). There is still a lot to catch up for me in the Hendrix catalog.
That's a shed load of Hendrix Pete, those top three you mentioned of the posthumous releases are must haves. Are You Experienced, what a debut, always been my favourite.
Grew up in southern Virginia. Had an old am radio that would pick up stations in other states late at night. Constantly searching the radio for music like no other music; and I finally found it when a Cleveland disc-jokey named Lee "Baby" Simms played a cut from "Are You Experienced" on his underground hour. It was an experience I've never relived. Don't even remember which song it was. Hendrix opened my ears and my mind to a musical universe I'm still traveling and exploring. What a wonderous thing.

Tru every time I rank them I can't decide on which one is "last place." I think Axis is the weakest for no other reason than it has the least amount of Hendrix lol
was stoked to see this one Pete! my studio rankings are the same with Are You Exp. just nudging our Electric Lady. cause of Purple Haze,one of the most iconic rock tracks of all time! the L.A. Forum disc is from the Lifelines box set and i don't know if you have it but i was surprised not to see the Purple Box Set from 2000. one point of interest and my biggest recommendation is the 10 disc "Jimi Hendrix - In The Studio" material from the Michael Jeffery estate. early and multiple takes,out takes, alternate takes,demo's, etc.,etc. Pete would TOTALLY dig this box set!

My absolute favorite live Hendrix is Atlanta Pop. This is top Jimi. I don't think he ever played better than this show. From start to finish, the whole band just tears it up

But if you loved Atlanta pop performance that's cool and that's all that matters we all Love Jimi
Yeah you are right Bart, machine gun was a master piece as was the Royal Albert hall, where Jimi played bleeding heart in C#, as well as red house, little wing and stone free, seeing Jimi playing at is best
One of my first albums ever as a kid that i was given by my mom was Axis Bold As Love I was around 9-10 yrs old so around 1971 I was mesmerized on the first listen and never looked back Jimi was always my fave and will always be... My Top Albums are:

Many people say that Helter Skelter was the first metal song, but I think Manic Depression was more metal and one year before! He was amazing, gone too soon! We should not forget the band both Experience and the Band of Gypsys had amazing musicians.
I think Purple Haze was the first metal song; the riffs are heavy and it uses the Devil's Interval.
Agree. I have been listening to rock guitar solos for over 50 years. 'Machine Gun' solo on the live Fillmore album is incomparable.
Hendrix created so many masterpieces in his short time here that it truly boggles the mind. His creativity and excellence is endless!

I can recommend a purple Boxset called "The Jimi Hendrix Experience". It's cheap and its got 4 Discs full of Live songs, outtakes, alternative versions and even the last song Hendrix ever recorded, Slow Blues. A great addition to the official studio albums.
I love Hendrix! Been listening and collecting his music since the 70s. You did a nice job on ranking of Hendrix. I have most that you mentioned on CD and I have the Jimi Hendrix "Winterland" on vinyl. It's an 8 vinyl box set. I transferred it to reel to reel tape. I also have a bunch of Hendrix stuff on DVD.

The three official ones are so stellar that it is only your mood on a given day that may make the difference. Some of the posthumous releases have become some familiar over the years that they are almost up there with them essential as they are.

Radio One - I put that between studio and live because those were live at the BBC recordings (no audience) and like many artists who performed on the legendary Top Gear show these recordings are brilliant and high sound quality.
As for the Live recordings, I had made myself a cassette tape back in the 70s to kind of recreate for myself the Woodstock performance from the Soundtrack albums I had and some bootlegs etc. Great day when that concert was finally released. It is my number one live choice
1. Live at Woodstock
2. Band of Gypsies
3. In the West
4. Isle of Wight
5. The Jimi Hendrix Concerts (1982 2CD set)
6. Jimi Plays Monterey
7. Freedom Atlanta Pop Festival
While I have countless other interesting Hendrix stuff, these are the ones that work for me as albums,

Interesting take and really like the channel. Just found you recently with your Thin Lizzy video. For me, Electric Ladyland is Jimi's magnum opus, my favorite album of all time. But AYE and BAL are fantastic as well, and Cry of Love is the most like an official Hendrix album of the posthumous stuff. Among the live recordings I'd go with Live at Monterey (DVD - you've got to see it), Band of Gypsys and one you didn't mention, Hendrix In the West. That was my first Hendrix record and was a compilation - Berkeley, San Diego, intro from Isle of Wight and 2 or 3 songs from the Royal Albert Hall gig. It's been re-released with the RAH songs replaced by other versions which is a shame because the originals were the best versions of Little Wing and Red House I've heard. New versions are still very good and some San Diego songs are added (Fire, I Don't Live Today, Spanish Castle Magic) so can't complain too much.
Been waiting for this Pete absolutely brilliant well worth the wait. May I recommend you buy the, Electric Ladyland, deluxe box set, with the cover Jimi always wanted, it really is incredible.
Wow what an undertaking Pete !! As a massive Hendrix fan I collected practically everything that came out during the 90-00s, but have to admit I sort of burnt out on feeling like I hadn’t to have every single Hendrix/Dagger release the last 10-12 years. I actually have several boots from Italy, Germany, and the UK that are fairly valuable now (according to Discogs anyway). Not going to rank everything I own but will mention a top few faves quickly.

Aloha Mr. Pardo, I really admire your knowledge and enjoy your presentations on music. I just DISC-overed you about two months ago, so not sure if you have covered one of my favorite genres of the Rock & Roll world, that being Blues Rock (which fits in nicely here with Jimi). My main request is could you do a rating of disc's from one of my favorite guitarist, Johnny Winter. I would greatly appreciate it. Big Mahalo from the middle of the Pacific!

Thank you for this, good overview. First Rays and South Saturn were first released in the late 90s (estate releases that cleaned off any non-Jimi/non-band contributions.)
There is not a single disappointing track on any of these three albums, Jimi was such a mesmerising guitarist! Here’s my ranking:
1. Electric Ladyland (1968) - just perfection. This contains some of the greatest sounds that have ever graced my ears.
2. Are You Experienced (1967) - possibly the first true hard rock album?
3. Axis: Bold As Love (1967) - just a hair below AYE in my opinion, but would still make my top 50 favourite albums of all time, no doubt.
Thanks. What an undertaking. Many moons ago I did have the Crash Landing and Soundtrack to Rainbow Bridge LPs. I have always loved the version of Hear My Train A Comin' from Rainbow Bridge. The version of Woodstock from Both Sides Of The Sky is interesting. Stephen Stills on guitar and vocals and Jimi on bass and guitar. This was recorded the year before Crosby Stills, Nash and Young's Deja Vu album. Pretty interesting version to say the least.

Awesome cataloguing! Its always a toss up between Woodstock and Fillmore for me. I hear he also carried around a reel-to-reel and would record his own smaller concert venues. I found a recording on YT of when he came to my town of Ottawa Canada. Afterward it was written up in the local paper that he went and recorded Joni Mitchell at another venue.
It’s like he never slept.
Hello Pete, really enjoying your video on Jimi's music here. I've been a fan of his music since 1990, when I discovered 'Are You Experienced?' through a close friend of mine. Google hipped me to your video; I have most of the recordings you've featured here, although I love all three original Experience albums, the Band Of Gypsies record is probably my absolute favorite. Coincidentally, I posted a video of 'The Wind Cries Mary' just a few hours ago. It's my original take on this beautiful tune by Jimi, featuring my good friend Baris on bass clarinet and myself on guitars and vocals. We had recorded this demo in October 2013 and totally had forgotten about it. A couple of weeks ago I discovered the mp3 file while searching through my emails and put together this video, I think you may enjoy it. Please give it a listen and tell me what you think. Cheers. Nice roundup Pete. Btw 'First Rays' is from 1997. The computer graphics and fonts used on the cover are very much of that time
The Atlanta concert fro 1970 came in the box set Stages. Four concerts, one each year from 67-70. They are all great. Winterland 68 is available with all 6 shows (2 each day). It's called Winterland Reels (I'm sure you can find it) and it has some my favourite versions of multiple songs.
Always loved the single "Purple Haze" (which was not part of the UK Release of "Are you experienced?" - on of the songs that turned me to wanting to be a guitar player. "Axis: Bold as Love" is my favourite album for the last couple of years.
Pete, discovered you during lockdown. Big fan! We are about 3 or 4 years apart and share a TON of mutual music taste. My question: Ive been playing guitar and gigging since the mid 80's and find myself staring at your guitars in the background as much as I listen! Is your Goldtop and Burst USA or Reissue? I have/had several Reissues. And two vintage Gibsons a 52 Goldtop and a Junior. I am in Pa (Harrisburg) be cool to take the trip up and jam!

All the studios records are surrounded by a lot of studio sessions and fortunately the family of Mr Jimi has recovered the rights to his music and suddenly we are fortunate to have the full extent of his talent through at least ten albums and the Blu-ray Electric Church - the Graal : THE AUTHORISED HENDRIX FAMILY EDITION- ❤👍🎶
I was one of those collectors in the late 70s/early 80s trying to find all the posthumous vinyl releases. How were we to know that one day the Hendrix estate would be able to get control of the music and do a better job releasing it. It was mostly the record companies taking advantage. They would put out "identical" albums in the US and the UK ... but put one different song on the UK release, so that us fanatics would have to buy both! There were two albums that they wiped out all the musicians playing with Jimi and had studio musicians play new backing tracks. (Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning). They broke up Jimi's next intended release (to be called First Rays of the New Rising Sun) into two albums, The Cry of Love, and Rainbow Bridge. These are the two 70s vinyl must-haves. Most critics put Cry of Love on top, but I daresay Rainbow Bridge is even better. And wouldn't you know, it was the first one to be discontinued! (Now available on CD).
I agree with you Pete on the studio albums. Hendrix set the bar very high!

Pete, I know you said you did have Jimi's early posthumous albums. I just wanted to say that The Cry of Love by Jimi Hendrix is excellent. It has "Angel" on it and my favorite from that album "Freedom". Also, I have a Jimi Hendrix live album on vinyl that is pretty good called Hendrix in the West.
I like Cry of Love too.Freedom,Ezy Rider,Angel,Astro Man,In from the Storm. It was his next album and was close to done.
Even that Little Wing alone makes In The West so OMG.
But that album has 8 bodacious masterpieces. Underrated.
I agree with you: the three EXPERIENCE albums are equal.
For the ones who want "new" studio tracks, search for these two posthumous collections: "South Saturn Delta" and "First Rays of the New Rising Sun".
I also recommend a 1995's tribute, "In from the storm", that has people like Carlos Santana, Brian May, Sting, Vinnie Colaiuta, Cozy Powell, Corey Glover, Steve Vai, Buddy Miles.
Rainbow Bridge and Blues are also must-haves!

History of Jimi Hendrix is I would regard as a must have, though a compilation.
The first and one of my most favorite songs is "Hey Joe" which I heard on CKLW. I now have the Woodstock two DVD set which features "Hear My Train A Comin'" which is also one of my most favorite songs. Nice and bluesy. "Axis Bold As Love" is another awesome album that I took with me on my genealogy search trips throughout the south. I used a tape player with one plug and combined two earplugs into stereo sound that made it sound awesome! This was before earphones as we know them.
Another one of my favorites. My number 1.Axis Bold as Love 2.Electric Ladyland. 3. Are You Experienced. Hendrix is one of those artist whose music never sounds dated. So ahead of his time.
My first Hendrix album was Rainbow Brides( studio ). Loved it. I`ve notice that there are younger people who don`t seem to realize Jimi`s historic significance.
The very first Hendrix music I really heard was "Crash Landing" way back in 75, and although it was overdubbed and spliced together by Alan Douglas, it completely exposed me to the unparrelled musicality and all around cosmic originality of His creative genius. Electric Ladyland is my fave, but C.L. holds a special place in my heart.
Some really cool stuff. Any Hendrix stuff I see I'm picking up. Like you said any Hendrix is good Hendrix.

Cry of Love is underrated. It’s better than the other attempts at making “the album Hendix would have made if he had lived.” In fact, I like it better than Axis and Ladyland.
I will say this, Jimi's Discography got better after his First Album.
Electric Ladyland is just Awesome.
Apart from the three official albums, my favorite is Cry of love.

Cry of Love is by far my favorite and unfortunately often not even mentioned...Jimi shows a different, more bluesy style.
There were four official releases(while he was alive). I think you’re forgetting “Band of Gypsies,” or only talking about studio albums. “Cry of Love” is a very good, underrated album.

frog-pond kite-wind baseball-glove Hendrix-guitar The distance between Jimi's heart and soul to his guitar is shorter than all other guitarist's. He was shy and unassuming, it seemed nearly his entire being was pouring out through his astonishing playing.
Electric Ladyland is the sound of electric guitar going from black and white to color. Yes, as Pete proclaimed Machine Gun as having the greatest solo in recorded history, a solo that captures the deepest depths of human feeling, I also feel All Along The Watchtower to be the greatest cover song of all time and Voodoo Child (Slight Return) to be the benchmark for riffs and soloing. And to think I used to tell people I couldn't get into Hendrix due to my dislike of his singing (this was many moons ago)…..what a dick I was! Finally, Axis' features Jimi's most graceful and subtle fretwork.....just beautiful stuff!

The best Hendrix album for me will always be ‘Smash Hits’, the first of his I owned. I love him when he expressed his guitar mastery within the confines of a concise pop song.
I think most musicians are best served by having a producer or record company to limit the time they have to fiddle about. Hendrix was brilliant when he first appeared because he was working so fast. Writing, recording, touring, non stop. By the time of ‘Electric Ladyland’ he could get royally stoned and do whatever he felt like. For me his music suffered as a result as it lost its focus. Having said that, possibly my favorite Hendrix tune of all is ‘Crosstown Traffic’, so he could still do short and sharp if he felt like it.
There's a lot of overlap between Smash Hits and the US Are You Experienced. It makes it tough for American fans to assess AYE.

I love Midnight Lightning, Cry of Love & War Heros. These came out in the 70’s after he died. I know a lotta people hate these but I grew up with them. I still have the Japanese first cd pressing of Midnight Lightning w/ OBI strip. It’s super hard to find with the OBI.
