Several years ago, I took my husband to Tommy's concert. He wasn’t thrilled about it at first, thinking that watching one guy play guitar without singing would be pretty boring. However, after just one song, he was mesmerized by Tommy’s performance. By the end of the concert, he was hooked and spent the following weeks obsessively listening to Tommy’s music. His playing truly is something magical. Thank you Rick for bringing him to talk to you and us again.

Two things to note about Tommy: 1) Arguably the greatest acoustic guitarist of all time. 2) As a person he exceeds his ability as a guitarist. Talk about a legacy. This man sits atop the throne.

@@virtualpilgrim8645 He has covered a huge range of music from metal to jazz to classical etc. Not sure what genres or music you mean outside of of ethnic music unique to each culture. And if you suggested it to him he would likely be interested to cover it. But again it is only what brings the big audience that keeps him alive. But I love he covers the artists who will only have small viewings on UA-cam regardless of how great they are and how loved they are in the real world.
I saw Phil play at a clinic a million years ago and I still remember being in awe. It wasn’t just one thing like phenomenal speed or some trick technique, and I’m sure he could have pulled all of them off. The blend of everything he could do and make it musical was what stays with me. What an incredible and incredibly underrated player Phil was.
This is easily a top 3 interview of all time. The great thing about Tommy is how intuitive he is and true to himself! He has more energy at 70 than most pop stars today.
I’ve met Tommy while he was on tour in Europe. Fortunately enough, my music teacher for the music bought tickets for Tommy’s show. More interestingly, she reached out to Tommy to ask him if he would come to visit our class and he came! I was fortunate enough to experience his genius as a musician and as a person. He was even kind enough to jam with me on guitar, I will always cherish that memory in my ❤!
Tommy played 3 hours, standing ovation every song. One song he stopped suddenly...complete silence for a half second and a guy yells out in a stunned drawl "Your so gooooood" and the whole theatre exploded with applause and laughter - epic concert. Pre UA-cam he didn't get the level of fame he deserved. Tommy E you are the Chet Atkins of Millenial audience. CGP
I've always liked Tommy, but when I saw him about three years ago in Kalamazoo, Michigan I was surprised at how emotional the concert was. Leo Kottke, for example, always makes me see pictures, scenes in my mind, but Tommy made me feel emotions. I was not prepared for that. He never played any sad songs and yet there were times I had tears in my eyes. Smiling the whole time, but tears! I felt love, wonder, joy, surprise, happiness. Never sadness and yet there were times I had tears. Music is so powerful, and Tommy Emmanuel does it so powerfully. I swear, that concert was a spiritual experience. I hope I have a chance to see him again. If you have never seen live and you find yourself with the opportunity to, DON'T MISS IT!
Yes, we'll said. I'm lucky to have seen him multiple times over the last 15 years or so, and I've had the very same thing happen to me and the people I've brought to each concert. It's very unique and certainly doesn't happen with many musicians, but it truly does at a Tommy show!
I've been to many concerts with certain musicians like what you describe. Phil Keaggy, perhaps one of THE BEST guitar players and certainly top 5 world class..., IS one of those kind. I believe very strongly, that some are 'Mantled' by God... anointed, one might say, to do what they do. Listen to "Master and the Musician', by Phil Keaggy... without distraction, and the 'special' anointing that Tommy speaks of..., come through and touch the Soul..., very deeply. I'll go so far as to say that when truly "present' in the congregation, with such 'anointed' musicians ..., the vulnerability of a true musician..., stretches through the level of the Soul (where we reason, feel and make choices)...., through to your deepest, truest and eternal 'you', the Spirit. There, there is joy (not simply happiness), contentment (a deep 'Shalom'), and the PERSON of who you are..., IS enlightened, encouraged and released to grow and truly appreciate life. These types of musicians are not the base: talented. They are 'mantled', anointed! When they perform or entertain..., THEY are as blessed and uplifted as the 'congregation'. Talent draws 'audiences'. Anointed musicians, enjoy the congregants..., enjoying their "anointing' Zero ego really, just true confidence. It's a blessing and Thank God for them.
I love how he casually says I haven’t played a drop d tuning on this guitar yet. Then quickly tunes it and starts playing this wonderful song. Just amazing.
In 2000 at the St. Louis Sheldon Concert Hall, I saved Tommy’s entire concert! I was in the front row, center and Tommy dropped his pick while attempting to place it between his lips. It fell on the floor next to my foot. Tommy gave me a look and looked at the pick. So I retrieved the pick and handed it to him. At the end of the concert Tommy tossed me the pick. NOT THE END OF THE STORY! Years later I moved to Boise, Idaho. Tommy was performing at the Egyptian Theatre and had a meet and greet prior to his show. Selection was made via a request by email. In the subject line I simply put, “I saved Tommy’s St. Louis concert” and explained how in my email. I was one of the lucky twelve. I brought that pick with me and retold the story to Tommy. He didn’t remember but he did remember the pick! He said he uses a more flexible one now. I have a fantastic picture of me with Tommy holding that very pick. He is such a gentleman.
Went to one of Tommy's workshops 10 years ago and had the immeasurable privilege of playing with him for a couple minutes (he gave everyone a chance if they wanted to). I played a simple chorus I had written that's basically a 12 bar blues in E. For those two minutes I played and sang my own song while an absolute living legend (and in my opinion, the greatest guitar player) accompanied and solo'd on top of it. It was probably the closest to living my musical dream I'll ever get. And as brilliant as he is at playing, Tommy is equally as quality of a person as well. My wife and 4 young kids came to pick me up and he took time to visit with them, ask them questions, etc. He was one of the most genuinely kind people I'd ever met - and I'd say that even if he wasn't a famous guitar player. Just an absolutely wonderful person! 🙏🏼
omg u got to play WITH Tommy? Man I bet your heart was in your throat! I've only shook his hand and almost broke his little finger as I awkwardly went to shake. We laughed it off but my friend who saw it was livid. I was livid. Im never shaking hands again.
A wonderful artist. It occurred to me that he cannot fully communicate without his guitar. The instrument is part of him. Thank you for a wonderful video.
I was at the Toronto show when he fell coming on stage. He was doing a sideways hop (having fun) and caught his left foot and wemt down hard on his left side. He said that he thought he broke some ribs and then proceeded to put on a phenominal show with no corners cut. Tommy is absolutely amazing.
I was there as well. I remember thinking the fall was part of the gag until he got up and was clearly hurt. The shift from excited applause to concerned silence was immediate, like we all held our breath at once. Someone shouted "take your time Tommy" and after a few pained breaths, he did indeed deliver two phenomenal sets. Mind blowing really. He may play an acoustic be he is pure rock n' roll. Massey Hall always delivers a memorable show.
He’s the only guitarist I’ve EVER seen that just has music fall out of his hands at will. No thought at all, it’s just always right at the tip of his fingers.
Rick is always able to make the guest so relaxed. Never in the format of an "interview", but a couple of guys that love music hanging out. Love it... !!!
I had a sudden burst of inspiration and two glass of wine after work. Thought of my friend whom I lost little over a year ago. Played his guitar and came up with a nice guitar tune. Now after seeing this I'm even more inspired and don't know how the hell I'm gonna get to bed tonight! What a fantastic player he is.
Tommy is the greatest. What an excellent interview. I was at the show (Massey Hall in Toronto) where he broke his ribs. He came running out and took a big fall straight on his side but saved the guitar! At first we were not sure if that was part of the act lol. But it soon became obvious he was in a lot of pain. He took a few minutes to gather himself and the audience was very supportive. Then he started playing and put on an absolute killer show!
I was a solo musician, spent the summer of 2010 from Texas to Alaska and back and my last gig of the summer was the strawberry festival in Yosemite and i had no idea who else was playing. I did my 5 oclock set and i was walking off the stage and there was tommy who said good job, My jaw dropped, i watched his set later on, phenomenal Such a sweet guy
Tommy is one of the best EVER and such a cool dude... "I'm an Austailian, but I'm proud to be an American citizen too." We're proud to have you, Tommy!!!
Thank you Rick for being the type of person who listens instead of waiting to speak. This allows your guest to be in the moment and be comfortable enough to share stories that they might not with a host who lacks that skill. Amazing and beautiful 50+ minutes.
I booked to see Tommy in concert with MartinTaylor a few years ago. On the morning of the gig I remembered that Tommy did meet & greet sessions before a show. I emailed his office and got a standard email back .... Tommy doesn't always have time to see all his fans at concerts etc etc .... I thought I'd missed my chance. When I got to the theatre to pick my ticket an Aussie voice shouted out "Are you Mike Barker?" I was a little taken aback, but said "Yes" ..... "Well, Tommy wants to see you!" I was ushered into the stage area and Tommy greeted me and shook my hand like a long lost friend. We talked for about 5 minutes before I left him and all the bewildered fans who were waiting to see him, and probably thinking .... who the hell is he! I like to think that it might have been Richard Smith who mentioned my name to him. Richard and I go back many years, but that's another story.
A truly MUSICAL guitarist! So many of the modern guitarists, like Henson and others, seem to pursue technique and arbitrary harmony over story telling. Tommy takes you on a journey!
I used to watch Tommy and his brother, Phil, as a duo at my local pub when I was in high school. Rondo alla Turka was always a highlight.Great memories. He is an absolute icon.
@ChickenatorJr arguably more talented but regarded acoustics as "instruments of torture" and was quite different to Tommy. Didn't seem to care for fortune or fame and was quite happy playing pubs and clubs.
@Gabrielle4870 true blue Aussie legend and humble like his brother but far too much talent in that family for them to have not gone worldwide at some point
I grew up watching Tommy on TV in Australia and he blows my mind now just as much as he did then. I'm so glad he is recognised as one of the best, there is so much joy in his playing.
Everytime I see Tommy appear anywhere and I see him doing well, I'm so glad we're still blessed with a guitarist that is so life changing to me and many others.
Thank you for this second interview Rick! I can't express enough how much this man has inspired me in the few years I've been playing guitar. His emphasis on melody has completely changed my approach to not just my playing, but my writing/composition. In my eyes, Tommy Emmanuel is the best guitarist alive and no one can change my mind.
I'm seeing Tommy in about forty eight hours, for the second time. I can't wait. He is one of the most entertaining performers I've ever seen. He is such a full show, all by himself. I love that he is playing with, and shouting out some of my favorite players of the day. I love hearing that he is recording with Larkin Poe, and he just toured the UK with Molly Tuttle. Those would be great interviews for Rick!
I've seen him a few times now and seeing him again soon! (I'm Aussie) and even though he's been a professional touring music since he was a child, he somehow still seems to get better year after year even to this day, an absolute freak of nature and I am so proud that he is Aussie. What a gift to the world.
Tommy was right about Rick's influence. As a former musician who had not played in 30 years, I started watching Rick's "What make this Song Great" Videos a few years back, that led me to picking up my guitar again a little over a year ago. I first saw Tommy on Rick's channel last year and have since become obsessed with his playing and fingerstyle guitar in general .. Reengaging with the guitar in my early 60's has changed my life for the better, I feel like a kid again. I can't wait to get up and start playing guitar every morning. I have Tickets for two of Tommy's show's this April in Western Canada.. I can't wait!
Getting invited to be on the Rick Beato Show means much more than it did, when the show was in its youth. Today, it truly is an "honor" to get that phone call, even if you have no tour or record to promote. It is more valuable than money. Being recognized for your contribution to history is as good as it gets. Who could say "No" to that?
I had the privilege of attending the George Benson "Breezin with the Stars" event. Tommy's presence at this incredible four day workshop made this one of the highlights of my life. All of the other musicians were spectacular and you were gracious to spend some of your time in personal conversation. Thank you for posting this interview. Keep them coming Rick.
When I was 12 years old in 1975 , Phil and Tommy came over to our house in Mount isa , Queensland Australia. After a gig in town of where my dad, god rest his soul. Played an opening number for them. After this gig he invited them back to our house for some drinks. They were not really known then, and as a little kid I didn't know who they were at the time, but I listened to them all play guitar , laugh and have drinks . I remember being amazed. But I think it was his brother Phil Emanuel who I was really looking at play his guitar at that time. He was actually the one that inspired me to play guitar , just by listening to him that night. God bless he and my dad for that moment . These are the guys that have me listening to Rick beato and the like , with their interviews. And watching and enjoying things like this. If you view life as a life-long learning opportunity, the Mr. Beato, you are someone who brings life to life. Thank you.
Paul Gilbert inspired me to start playing electric guitar. Tommy Emmanuel inspired me to get an acoustic guitar, I even tried to learn how to play with the thumb pick. I keep failing so far, but I'm having tremendous fun playing my acoustic guitar.
Tommy is a total legend. He’s a true master of the guitar l, but also, he had such great energy. You can see how excited he is to be there with Rick just talking his passion. What a guy.
In between songs at one of his shows , he asked the audience if anyone there played guitar. One guy shouted out, "Not anymore!"
Every time I've seen Tommy I'm not sure if I should lock myself in the woodshed and practice 16 hours a day or just burn my guitar.

I do like that for a guy that can often talk for hours at a time I appreciate that he knows when to take the back seat and showcase an artist.
These interviews NEED to be on the Library of Congress. These are the BEST of music! Incredible, Rick!

Watching them play together is what real magic looks like. Phil was every bit as much of an artist, I am sure Tommy misses him every day.
@@kdooms Saw them at The Basement in Sydney in the 80's. At the time Phil was the front man.
@@Monkeyboy2457 Yep me too! Incredible shows.
This is easily a top 3 interview of all time. The great thing about Tommy is how intuitive he is and true to himself! He has more energy at 70 than most pop stars today.
100%
When it comes to acoustic finger style guitar, nobody can top Tommy. Great to have him on your show, Rick!
13:45 "I used to play it at double this tempo" LOL
I took my wife to see Tommy in LA. She had never heard of him, but at the end of the show, she said it was the best concert she'd ever been to ❤
i can second that. I had a friend take me to a concert of his at Massey Hall in Toronto. Fantastic!
Good choice of wife! :-)
Congrats. You almost lost your significant other.
Same thing happened to me. It inspired my wife to take up the uke!

A truly treasured moment for you. 👍
Nice story.
Wow
What a lucky guy you are.
Leo is overrated. Everything he does is fast arpeggios with fairly simple fingering.
Yes, we'll said.
I'm lucky to have seen him multiple times over the last 15 years or so, and I've had the very same thing happen to me and the people I've brought to each concert. It's very unique and certainly doesn't happen with many musicians, but it truly does at a Tommy show!
@@virtualpilgrim8645? Fast arpeggios? Leo? 😂 That's hilarious. Tommy wouldn't find oddball easy
@@julesbrunton1728 He is Repetitive
Anointed musicians, enjoy the congregants..., enjoying their "anointing'
Zero ego really, just true confidence.
Great story! I recently became a fan, and I've seen him twice at the Egyptian since. What a nice venue to see him in!
@ I saw him twice in St. Louis and twice here in Boise. I moved to Meridian in 2012.
That's incredible to have that once in a lifetime experience. You stepped up.
We all know Tommy’s a great guitar player but love his energy! This guy is super inspiring
Two beautiful souls talking about guitars and songs. Can't get better than that !
Did you hear anyone laugh?
@@Kithiero I noticed that in this video when Tommy was expounding on how he fell, either Rick interrupted him or the video was edited out.
@@virtualpilgrim8645 Not when he fell, but immediately after he got up he started cracking jokes again like he always does.
Mr. Emmanuel, that burst of motivation you get from watching B.B. King is exactly what I get from watching you and Rick. Thank you good Sirs.
I just love how he rips on guitar seamlessly with their discussion. Just seems so natural.
He’s the only guitarist I’ve EVER seen that just has music fall out of his hands at will. No thought at all, it’s just always right at the tip of his fingers.
This is so wholesome. And as an Aussie, listening to Tommy play waltzing matilda is absolutely 👌

Rick is always able to make the guest so relaxed. Never in the format of an "interview", but a couple of guys that love music hanging out. Love it... !!!
I never heard of Tommy Emmanuel until last year. Man, I've been missing one incredible and crucial guitarist! I'm so glad you interviewed him.
Enjoy Australia's finest! (If not the galaxie's!) Enjoy the incredible music bother, love from Oz
I remember going to a concert in the late 80’s in Australia.
Even playing for an interview you can see his intensity and passion for music he is totally immersed.
Just what I was thinking. Play with a feeling or dont play at all.
It's such a rare gift when talent, passion, and opportunity intersect in life as they have with Tommy.
His enthusiasm is positively contagious.
Wow, the song at ten minutes literally moved me to tears in an instant.
And than he says it's a work in process.
Perhaps inspired by Hurt and Stairway to Heaven?
I was a solo musician, spent the summer of 2010 from Texas to Alaska and back and my last gig of the summer was the strawberry festival in Yosemite and i had no idea who else was playing.
I did my 5 oclock set and i was walking off the stage and there was tommy who said good job,

Thank you Rick for being the type of person who listens instead of waiting to speak. This allows your guest to be in the moment and be comfortable enough to share stories that they might not with a host who lacks that skill. Amazing and beautiful 50+ minutes.
Rick is a very good listener, indeed
My thoughts exactly too
I booked to see Tommy in concert with MartinTaylor a few years ago.
Phil was just as talented as Tommy! What a talented family.
@@ChickenatorJr talent, hard work and excellent work ethic.
I grew up watching Tommy on TV in Australia and he blows my mind now just as much as he did then. I'm so glad he is recognised as one of the best, there is so much joy in his playing.

Tommy was right about Rick's influence. As a former musician who had not played in 30 years, I started watching Rick's "What make this Song Great" Videos a few years back, that led me to picking up my guitar again a little over a year ago. Getting invited to be on the Rick Beato Show means much more than it did, when the show was in its youth. Today, it truly is an "honor" to get that phone call, even if you have no tour or record to promote. It is more valuable than money.
