So re listen and appreciate the repetition you mentioned as both feet pedals working the double base drums. Also featured in “One” that sounds like machine gun fire and the end of “Fade to Black”

This song is the first song I heard from this album, which wasn't even released yet. I went to Monsters of Rock tour, which was Van Halen's tour, and they were the main band, but had a lot of other bands on the bill. The whole show was 9 hours long, and Metallica were third from the top, after them came the Scorpions and then Van Halen. Anyways they were in between their huge album Master of Puppets, and their new album coming out, which was And Justice for All, but it hadn't been released yet, and no singles were even out yet. So they told the crowd "Do you want to hear a song from our new album", and of course, everybody screamed "hell yeah". This is the song they played, and everybody fucking loved it, including me, and it kicked ass!!!

'Harvester of sorrow' was the first Metallica song I ever heard back in 1990 when I was a teen... it was different from anything I had heard from the usual 80's pop tunes... the guitars and drums stood out. The first hook to me becoming a fan was in... 🤘🤘 It's actually the most popular song on 'And justice for all' ... next to 'One' and 'Blackened'... 🔥🔥and Metallica used to crank it out regularly in concert.
The fact is... 'Harvester of sorrow' was the Metallica track that changed the band's trajectory, going into the next album in 1991... James Hetfield wrote 2 heavy riffs for the 'Justice' album that were not the usual thrash metal tracks... one was 'Harvester of sorrow' and the other would become 'Sad but true' ... Lars Ulrich felt that 'Sad but true' would not fit the vibe of the album, so they worked on 'Harvester of sorrow' and it made it on the album.
When Metallica was touring for 'Justice' in 1988/ '89, they noticed playing arenas that the audiences did not respond the same way as they did in smaller venues... Bigger crowds didn't know what to do when fast songs like 'Battery' were played live (except moshing)... but when they played 'Harvester of sorrow', the crowds responded by moving to the slower riffs and the reaction was bigger... it became a crowd favorite at the time.
That was why Metallica opted to shed the faster thrash metal tempos and embrace a heavier groove on the 1991 'black' album... They wanted to appeal more without losing their edge... And it worked. 'Enter Sandman'... 'Sad but true'... 'Wherever I may roam' ...became huge favorites from that record and none had a thrash metal tempo, and arena and stadium crowds moved actively to the slower songs.
It was also the time when bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins... were starting to make waves, and music was changing, crowd reactions were changing... the 80's were not happening any more by the time Nirvana broke big in 1991.
I still don't understand why Metallica completely shed their metal sound in 1996 and embraced a more 90's rock sound w/ country and southern rock influences and slower tempos... We wanted Metallica in 1996 to be the champions of heavy and thrash metal, and bring back the aggression that was missing from the scene in the 90's. Instead, they put out 2 albums ('Load' and 'Reload') that basically cut their past loose and declared themselves 'free to play whatever they wanted'... Former bassist Jason Newsted said that he was not feeling those records, but he had little say in their creation... to this day, Newsted doesn't know which tracks are on what record from those 'Load' sessions. He wanted Metallica to be the iconic metal juggernaut that he had been a fan of before joining... but they were literally playing country songs and riffs that did not sound like traditional Metallica.

This is literally one of, if not my favorite, Metallica song. It could be interpreted as a person being abused by a family member. Not being able to take any more of the abuse, ultimately killing their abuser. Their "loss" of life becomes the victim's "gain" of freedom.

Song defined Metallica have a tattoo seen them in concert three times and they are my favorite band because I related to a lot of things that happened to me in life growing up with cerebral palsy and apparently didn’t understand it. I am 37 now and still jam them as my anthem music when I need a musical release, but their greatest masterpiece was and Hass to be master of puppets second to welcome home (sanitarium) please review one of the songs. Would love to see your reaction. Sincerely Brad sanders😎👍

It's hard to say which one song defines Metallica. First thought was Battery, but then I thought the three instrumentals could easily be argued as songs that define them. Ktulu, Orion, and To Live is to Die are perfect representations of their musical genius. Lyrically (and musically), probably Fade to Black.
They recently did a remake called Blackened 2020. It's a powered down/acoustic version of Blackened, but still very heavy. Maybe react to that next?

She's done Metallica, some Megadeth, and some Slayer so far. I wonder what she'll think about the other thrash metal bands that helped form the genre such as Exodus, Testament, and Venom. LOL oh man, Lilly Janes reacts to Venom, that would be interesting indeed!

Hello this song is deeper than you think, it is based on the book The Harvest of Sorrow. "Very well written account of a horrific crime against humanity committed by Joseph Stalin and the soviet regime against innocent Ukrainian and Russian farmers". Basically the goverment took everything they had and people started dying from starvation. If you watch the video Metallica Harvester of Sorrow 1991 it represents the end of the Sovietic Union Regime . Rock concerts were forbidden in the USSR and the fact that Metallica played this song in front of 1.5 million russians was an statement of freedom. James Hetfield has said in an interview that this is his favorite concert .

I just absolutely cannot figure out why so so many people say Lars is one of the worst drummers of all time!! I mean I am freakin blown away by that!! IMO Lars should definitely be considered on the top 5 list of greatest heavy metal drummers of all time. Lars is awesome!

I don't understand the hate for Lars either. I think that comparing him to other metal drummers is part of the issue. I also can't help but think it's one of those asinine things that started on the internet somewhere that ended up blowing out of proportion without anybody doing any research before shooting their mouth off.
And they also fail to take into account that if it wasn't for Lars following one of the inspirations for Metallica as well as Lars meeting up with James Hetfield for the first time, there wouldn't be a Metallica right now, PERIOD!!

If the overall production of this album was better (more audible bass being the most obvious), it would be regarded as the best Metallica album made. It's easily my favorite and that's not taking a shot at any of their other masterpiece albums. This was a peak of Lars' drumming and the bands most "proggy" album. I can still listen to every track from start to finish without any issue to this day.

Lars is not a bad drumer. He just prefers simplicity at times. Does not mean he cant pull out a hundred hits in a second. He never followed a metal trends if they do not suit the song. I would say that Harverster of Sorrow has more drumming complexity to it than a slow paced song should even have. AJFA album is his best drumming to this date, and nothing else beats it.
