That entire album applies to the present day world more than it ever has before.
One of Metallica's most underrated songs imo. Wish they would play this live again
This song was written in response to the PMRC(Parents Musical Resource Center) attempting to censor music they deemed innapropriate for kids. They targeted artists of nearly every genre, mostly metal. There were congressional hearings to decide banning sale and distribution of music. In the U.S.A.! As a young metalhead back in the 80's, it seemed like every band had a similar song about censorship, Megadeth's "Hook In Mouth" is one of the best imo. Also EVERY music fan should see Twisted Sister singer Dee Snider's testimony in Congress on this issue. Dressed like he was ready to hit the stage, he shocked the stuffy old fuddy duddies with his eloquent defense of freedom. The end result was the Parental Advisory stickers on cassettes and cd's, which only let the kids know what the cool shit was!
great info, thx
nowadays the censorship is done by those that were politically against the PMRC back then!
It was the future, their present, and the past. There have always been people who think that freedom of speech should be stifled.
Not disagreeing, but the other side of Freedom of Speech is society’s reaction… which is also Freedom of Speech… I always think people who yell “freedom of speech” are those who are being jerks and don’t want to deal with the consequences. Freedom of Speech is a two way street that too many on either side treat as one way (their way).
@@bradmotl2083 We agree. In a Democracy, Freedom of Speech refers to your relationship with a government, nothing else.
@@bradmotl2083there can't be any freedom of speech at all. Majority of society must decide what's appropriative and what's not. In USA that's somehow decide minorities.
All those words about freedom, democracy etc just lies for ordinary people, nowhere is the world now exist any freedom or democracy, only illusions of them.
@@horizonblackWe're not a democracy, we're a Constitutional Republic which states very clearly the rights of speech in the 1A
@@bradmotl2083 The problem is our politicians latch onto one sides' argument against the other side to stifle that other side. If it was the free market of ideas and people could actually discuss things, the truth would come out. But dialogue has been stifled. Especially since Covid.
Such an underrated song. My favorite Metallica album. More technical and complex then before, and James's voice was more mature. Changes in tempo and solos are mind blowing
Yeah, I was surprised to see someone react to this song. The intro is epic and it just keeps going.
Honestly a really great song. I agree, very underrated overall from their library. Every once in a while I just need to hear this song.
One of my favourites, often overlooked. Amazing lyrics and music.
And this whole album pretty much describes the last few years we have lived, and does it very well. Things like "Blackened", "Frayed Ends of Sanity", "Shortest Straw", "...And Justice for All", and of course this one, seem to fit really well in times of confusion and conflict, like the one we are living in.
Yeah hardly no one talks about Frayed Ends of Sanity . That is a truly underrated song from them . I've never seen them play it live either .
@@Brando-Lee3725 They have played it two, maybe three times, and teased a bunch. Its full debut was, I think in 2014, and I believe it triggers some things deep inside so it's almost out of the live catalogue.
And they followed up this album with singing about the boogeyman ... sad. But true.
@@ekgrafix Right LOL ! Damn what a swerve ! However I did dig some of the black album . mainly the second half . But in zero way did it touch the previous records
@@Brando-Lee3725 I remember buying the black album when it came out n took it to cd exchange same day , 5 years later I tossed a garage days re-revisited cd out my car window cuz I heard turn the page on the radio. Lol guess I was a bit jaded
The title does not appear in the lyrics. "Eye Of The Beholder" comes from the phrase "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," meaning that people see things in different ways. Our perception is our reality.
This song is about how despite freedom of speech, America isn't really free: "You can do it your way if it's done just how I say." Is the perfect tag line to describe that. But sometimes lost on some is that freedom goes hand in hand with responsibility.
you can say want you want to say, if it's said just how you tube says. *cue Lars*
@@metler7642 you van do ot your own way, if its done how Susan says
One of Kirk's shorter solos but it's fun. Quite a lot of time signature changes and a gritty rhythm guitar holding it down. Lyrically fantastic too.
This album blew me away as a kid because the super catchy riffs sewn together with very odd time changes that flowed together seamlessly was mind boggling to me in 88 ! Not to mention that killer drum sound . Lyrics throughout it were awesome too .
One of my favorite songs on the album. Groovy hook, catchy chorus, very on point lyrics. Love it. I'm glad you liked it too.
These are some of James’ best lyrics of the decade. His 90s lyrics are a lot different, very introspective and often great as well.
When I was teenager I fell in love with Metallica because of their music, energy, etc. But now I'm falling in love again with their lyrics.
eye of the beholder is just so timeless......my favorite song from that album!
The AJFA album changed my life forever politically, Eye of the Beholder specifically. It was like hearing my own private thoughts sung to me. I'll always love this song
Love the fade in. Love the lyrics. Love the song.
Great reaction!
A awesome song by the Justice album.Thank you Lily Jane for reacting to it and for being so beautiful ❤️🔥😘
Really like your comments! You seem spot on with a hug group of us metalhead standing up for FREEDOM. Thanks Lilly!
I have been listening to your reactions quite a while. It's so nice to watch your videos! 😎 Greetings from Finland by the way. ☺
Love your commentary on this song! Keep rocking girl! Look forward to more.
Good question! For me it feels like the shortest straw this year! Great reaction! Loving this journey!
Yes! Same problems today, just amplified. Really loving your content!
1994, 14 years old, dabbling with some metal, some grunge, some hip hop. Heard this song and a buddy was learning it on guitar.
“You can play this?”
“Kinda… Learning”
“Can you teach me?”
Guitar play was born 🤘
my favorite metallica song from my favorite metallica album
Agree. Those stacatto riffs are outta this world. Have you heard the demos from this song on the Deluxe version? Man, there's a brilliant fill Lars does after the solo that would be a killer if it had make it to the final version.
Gotta do harvester. That song is HEAVY
Great reaction, love this record ...so iconic.
I love this song, cause yeah it rings so true, even today!
I do so love that solo.
Right on Point! Glad we're back on 'And Justice For All' reactions!!
Very underated song, always loved that one!
YEAHHHH 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
One of my absolute favorite Metallica songs. Lyrics are more appropraite now than ever.
You actually get it! Congrats!
One of my favourite Metallica songs. I wish they played it live more often.
To me, this is the theme of And justice for all. My favorite song on the album.
I like your gesture 🤌🏻 when you express your opinion😄
Greatest memory of this song, waiting for my Dad on a Friday night shopping, Walmart, pack store. Windows down in my Explorer with the Kicker subs full blast, ohhh the looks I got😎🤣
This will always be my favorite album from them . Its just SO damn great ! Most people say Master of Puppets , their previous album is the best . Not me . .....And Justice all the way !!! I cant wait to hear your opinion after reviewing both albums through fresh eyes/ears . You know what I mean lol !!!!
"Washington Is Next" by Megadeth is another song that is more relevant now.
“And the newest slavery is to keep the people poor and stupid” .. relevant lyric
Also "End Game" and "Return To Hangar"
Next, "The Shortest Straw"
This is my wife’s favorite song. This message never grows old. Canceling & censorship always takes us backwards. There is NO proper way to live only the way that works for you. Love Metallica
does she have a sister ❤
"Truth is an offense"
Awesome song. Thanks 👍
This song is largely why I have the album cover tatted
Underrated banger
Legend
Did never expect a ghost story to come out of this song but I appreciate it.
yay
My favorite song on and justice for All is one. But this is a very close second
The Kings 🤘
Awesome 👍👍 reaction. Gd old days. 88 wow life moves fast. 88 I was going on 20 getting ready for WAR. Metallica was at there finest at this time. Remember getting Tshirt to this song. Cassette to.
Wow...that's some interesting insight...this song is kinda prophetic, so to speak...in which... it's really just common sense with anyone with a sound mind with inspiration..
This song is so relevant today
To live is to die is Cliff Burtons last song you have to react to. I'm not sure how much he wrote of it but it's got lots of emotions in it for an instrumental. From And Justice for All.
Great song that describes 2023 is 'War Eternal' by Arch Enemy.🤘
Frayed Ends has too be listened too xP
An AMAZING reaction to a very relevant song still yet here in 2023.... WOW!!!
A great song about freedom of expression
Bingo
Greetings from Bulgaria
My favorite song of the band. Heavy, solid and consistent thrasher they unfortunately are not able to do anymore.
Why would they not be able yo play it anymore ??
@@Greg-ek7qh Age, i think. The last two albuns are nowhere close to their golden era.
I didn't realize how prophetic this song was.
This is their best album
Another one off this album very overlooked is “The Freyed Ends Of Insanity” a chilling 1st person narrative of someone loosing their sanity. My cousin at the time this came out was struggling with mental illness, and he would get up and leave the room when this song would come on….he’d say, “it’s just too fucking real”
If there was a song to describe 2023, it would be “Speak” from Queensryche’s album Operation Mindcrime from 1985. Still as true today as it was then.
Youre totally right about this song aging well
The lyrics are influenced by what Jello Biafra experienced during the PMRC era. And speaking of book canceling, we're witnessing a lot of that in Florida schools right now.
@@datapusher-OG "protecting kids"? Give me a break. It's more like hiding behind kids for a bunch of culture war nonsense. But like your previous deleted posts, just keep saying the quiet parts out loud.
@@johnpyle1268 theyre literally putting pornographic content in school librariea so banning those books is no different to the fact that school libraries also dont have copies of Playboy... how stupid are you
yup metallica predicted the future
My favorite part overall is the intro... about halfway through it
This is the perfect song to describe the difference between my truth, your truth, and THE TRUTH. There is only one truth, even if it's not revealed to us at the moment. Truth is objective, but it's easy for subjective opinion to masquerade as truth, or to pervert the truth. People use half truths all the time to justify their own stance, or opinion on things. If a person knows the objective truth, but decides to add their own opinion into it, or outright change it, it's a straight up lie no matter what their intentions are. Teachers lie to us all the time, especially now with public schools implementing lying to kids about facts of life. As a repercussion, kids are growing up further and further removed from reality. Some adults never grow up. A lot of us with caring parents have heard the classic line, "you are special", and "you can do anything you want to do in life if you work hard enough". That's a great thought, but it doesn't tell you how to succeed in life. A lot of times, that's why kids graduate from college, and can't find a job. They did all of the work, spent all of the money (sometimes with loans) for absolutely nothing, and some of them don't think they should have to pay back the money they were lent for their education. It's better to be taught to take advantage of what you are best at, maximize your efforts, and find a sure way to make an honest living with it.
Genius.
So did "And Justice for All"
This is the last CD with Cliff Burton's soul
Just wish they let Jason play louder
Freedom no longer frees u hits so hard
The song that relates more with 2023 "Four Horsemen"
Every metal band from the 70's and 80's pretty much predicted the future.
James hetfield did it better and more accurate
@@Shawn-mo6dh shout out to Queensryche and Megadeth as well
@@diegofiorillo6412 yes indeed
You should check out some songs off of thier new album. I'm digging it.
Bro they basically predicted how everyone will gradually become more and more sensitive over time
Definitely don’t underestimate James. He can come off a little dippy at times, but he is definitely a brilliant dude…his lyrics were very insightful, and at times, almost prophetic.
I know One and Blackened get most of the praise for "...and Justice for All". But this has always been my favorite track from this album.
I enjoyed this very much, actually I would say 1,000 Eyes from Death is maybe a song that aged pretty well.
I like that you said 3 different names in the story about the boy 🤣
I like it you are reviewing, "And Justice For All." Eye of the Beholder is a great song. However, To Live Is To Die is one more song I believe that should not be left out when listening to And Justice For All album. If you in fact review the song, I will say the instrumentals are the most important to listen by because there is so much raw emotion put into the instrumentals. You will genuinely love it. Great video.
🖤
The perfect song to describe 2023? Metal Heart by Accept.
🤘😎👍
Love the reaction!❤️ Metallica was such an amazing band back then, the first 4 albums are flawless to me. I like most of the later music but it is not on the same level to me. They need to bring back that killer Mesa guitar tone they had back in the day.🤘🏻
😘
STRATOVARIUS - Frozen In Time ! 2023
Freedom of speech is something I really took for granted before but over the past five or six years I started to understand and truly value the importance of free speech. During the COVID lockdowns Eye of the Beholder was one of those songs I hadn't listened to in God knows how long and I definitely gained a new perspective on the lyrics that's for sure. 😐
Another song to react to with similar themes is Hook in Mouth by Megadeth and When Freedom Dies by Nuclear Assault. Those are another two songs where the lyrics just seem ever relevant in today's world unfortunately 😂
Hey Lilly, Love your reaction videos. You analyze much different than the rest. A much more intellectual point of view.
I would love to see your reaction to Slipknot.. Duality. Also would like to see what you think of Sepultura. They are a Brazilian band that were at the forefront in the thrash metal movement. Check out Sepultura's Territory from Chaos AD. Also check out the cover of Territory by Crypta, Life of Agony and others. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Minus the absence of a solid baseline this is Metallicas best album.
My favorite Metallica song along with Blackened.
My house has shitty electrical wiring and ghosts!!! Great reaction.
You were raised to be objective. Awsome to see. Write dont tap your thoughts!
What a perceptive take on the world, your Ghost old electric wiring is spot on. What's wrong with people... Also can i marry you. 🤣👌 Keep it up 🇸🇪
In some interviews, Metallica said that the lyrics of ...and justice for all come from what they saw on the tv news. If the album is still relevant lyrically today, should we worry? :)
🐇
Songs of the Year for 2023. Nine Inch Nails - "March of the Pigs" and Rise Against - "State of the Union". Both songs kind of encompass the things going on on all sides right now.
Good god dam how this is a song for Americans who love their country under serious attack right now
Your eyes are open ❤as a old man we leave u the future do with it what u must…
1984 aged well.
Yep, this was definitely inspired by the Reagan era. But yes, history rhymes, repeats, and in the case of the last decade, intensifies.
Listen to sanatarium possibly one of the best ever
