    Mate, you are doing so well in front of the camera now hey. I've been following your handheld videos from the beginning and I look forward to seeing the videos come out.

      Thanks! I'm definitely feeling a bit more comfortable in front of the camera than I did when I started. I'm glad it shows!

    Dude you are absolutely killing it! I look forward to your Arduino BQ library, Ive always struggled using the TI BQ chips as they always seemed to need some sort of Host IC to configure them and Im too much of a beginner to properly implement something like that. Also you are the first person I have ever seen that puts the pcb on the hot plate first and then places the components on the pcb.

      Thanks! I'm still working on the library. I haven't written one before and I've found a couple of problems I haven't had time to sort out yet so it's taking a bit longer than I'd hoped!

      Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the updates! I was originally planning to maybe sell kits, but its beginning to seem like it would be too difficult/time consuming for me so this whole project may end up open sourced, then you will be able to build one yourself!

    This project is so amazing. I know you already stated that you are uploading all your code to github. But it would be awesome if you did a complete build guide when you're all done. I would totally follow it. I already have an ROG Ally. But having a gaming system that I built myself would be even better.

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  2 місяці тому

      Thanks! This is exactly the right way to view this project too. It's more about the process than the final product as I'm certain by this point I could've just bought an Ally or one of the many other options available for much less than I've spent prototyping this thing. But nothing beats being able to tell people that I designed/built it myself!

  • @RolandDobbins
    @RolandDobbins 4 місяці тому +3

    So, when can I buy one?

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  2 місяці тому +1

      Probably never, but I will make sure I let everyone know if I decide to sell kits! I will open source it once the design is complete either way, I just may hold off on releasing it for a while if I do decide to sell some kits.

    So how large is the battery in watt hours? That would make it easier for me to compare against other handhelds in battery life.

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  4 місяці тому +1

      69 watt hours in total. It's not perfectly comparable though because we have to step the voltage up to 19v and then the PC undoubtedly steps it back down to 3.3, 5 and maybe even 12v. So there's a bit of efficiency lost through all the conversions compared to "professional" handhelds.

    • @crestofhonor2349
      @crestofhonor2349 4 місяці тому

      @@cncdan Would it be possible to source a battery from another handheld or is that not possible thanks to the conversions?

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  4 місяці тому +1

      Mostly because it wouldn't be the right shape or size. I'm also using a higher voltage battery pack than most handheld's would have because the closer the battery voltage can be to the final output voltage, the more efficient the final boost stage is. If you used the much more expensive 6000mah 21700 cells from Vapcell you could match the Ally X's battery capacity for about 20% more runtime than what I currently have.

    Most commercial PC handhelds seem to discharge themselves in a couple of weeks of being off, so you're doing good on that front comparatively. Not that finding a handheld dead after leaving it 'off' is that great, but it when it's been weeks it's forgivable. I'd be much more worried about implementing a 'charger bypass' when plugged in all the time, so that the PC runs off the voltage coming in from the power brick and stops charging the cells once they're full instead of cooking them over time. Lost a laptop's battery to that, since I had heard you're supposed to just leave them plugged in all the time, but without the charger bypass it actually kills them.

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, you're probably right. This is one of the reasons I hardly use my switch. I don't have a lot of time to game and when I do I just want to pick something up and go. Nothing worse than sitting down for some gaming only to find the battery is dead! As for a charger bypass, I'm sure we could work something out. The battery does need to stay connected for the BMS to function correctly but you could write a line or two of code that disables charging over storage voltage keeping the battery perpetually at the best voltage for longevity.
