James never actually wrote this for this or any album. It was a personal work he wrote for himself. His deepest most emotional thoughts. Lars overheard him playing it and begged him to put it on the album.
Well not entirely true. Lars heard it only 4 notes that James played on open strings...It wasn't a song built up with all those passages that James was playing for himself. That developed within the band
I remember something about the recording of the black album said by Jason.. Like Bob Rock (the producer) said stuff that they should change and James was like "stop fu***ng with my music!"
I love how open you guys are. You just say what you're thinking and it is fascinating to listen to, especially the stuff about your relationship. This song has a special place in my heart. This was my favourite song when I was around 6 or 7 years old and I heard my brother playing it. I even went into school and sang it (badly) at a school talent contest when I was 9 years old.
The first time I stayed at my husbands house when we first started dating, he was sitting playing the guitar and he made eye contact with me while he was playing and held it for the entirety of the song. He was playing Nothing Else Matters. 6 years later it played as I walked down the aisle to marry him
This song mean so much to me. My nephew died from cancer 4 years ago and we played this at his funeral. He was a big fan of Metallica. Still makes me a bit sad listening to it.
This is one of the most beatiful pieces of art ever. Song is simple, yet deep and complex. About the eternal struggle of people getting together and staying together. Just pure artistry at its peak. Nothing else matters. I did not like it all that much when it came out, but I was barely a teenager back then and didn't know anything.
Amazing I just walked down the aisle with my new wife to this song last week. We chose it because she is from the UK and I'm from the USA lyrics were perfect for the temporary distance. You 2 are awesome. This reaction made my day
Just like you suspected, the song is about romantic relationships. The singer James Hetfield said in an interview that how it was about missing your loved one while on tour. One day he was talking to his then-girlfriend on the phone and had a guitar in his lap. He did the arpeggio that you can hear through the song and suddenly he had to end the conversation because he heard it sounding good. Then the musical side of the song was built on that. If I remember correctly, he actually wanted the song for himself, but the drummer Lars Ulrich overheard it and wanted to make an official song of it. And the rest is history.
All music aside, the best part of this video was seeing what a great relationship you two have. How both of you have come through all kinds of bad times, and you've found each other. There were some really touching moments here, and I appreciate your willingness to let us look into your lives like that. Very few presenters drop their stage persona and let people see the real person behind it. Thank you.
Sori looks at Vin and asks a question. Vin looking forward, answers, putting up a man of steel front. Sori, says nothing. Vin looks to Sori.........melts! Sori, touches his face and melts with him. This is all anyone needs to know.
At first I thought to myself "Oh why NEM, such a famous song you all must've heard it a billion times" but then I saw Sori was sick and had a headache and realized..As always great reviews, funny and kind, enjoyable personalities :) luv ya all, always awesome to hear your stories and thoughts
Love it because James does the solo for this song and you can feel the emotion even in that. The song was originally written for his girlfriend-at-the-time when he was on tour but nowadays James says its a song for the fans.
Absolutely love this song! This is the song that my wife and I chose as our first dance together after being married. As always, great reaction and breakdown of what you heard and felt. Saying that this is the best reaction channel doesn't do the two of you justice. This always feels so much more meaningful. Keep up the good work!
Every time I listen to a slow metallica song I just feel it inside of me the emotion I can just feel it. It just makes me want to cry sometimes I hear this on the radio every day
You two might be proof soul mates exist. My first wife left me for another man and mind you I wasn't perfect and blame for the failed marriage can land on both sides. My church wanted me to force this thing to work. Ultimately neither of us were happy in our marriage but our religion dictated that we make it work. Kind of crazy huh? Anyway I have remarried to a wonderful woman whom I remind everyday is the most important woman in my life and my ex is happy with her new fiance. Life is as it should be. I'm probably rambling but your commentary always gets me thinking which I guess is why I like listening to you guys.
You guys are rad. I’m not religious in any way whatsoever but I enjoy your reactions to my favourite songs and I really enjoy hearing you guys put a personal spin on everything and sharing your stories as human beings. I am truly happy for stumbling upon this channel. And as an atheist I enjoy hearing all the biblical references because I like hearing and learning about the “other camp” cheers guys!
One of my favorite songs of all time, and I honestly never even stopped to consider what it was about. The music just has an aura about it that's like... it doesn't even really matter what it's about. It just fills you with this emotion that can be whatever it is to you regardless of what James is rambling on about.
Vin I'm sorry to hear that's what you saw growing up. I was lucky to have my father as a great example. I am going to make sure my son has that same example. And he will understand that you are more of a man for loving your woman and not being ashamed of that than you are to act like a stereotypical man.
vin-sori listening to both of you..... i like you man.... your deep man.... deep but sensible.... your relationship with your creator is a personal thing that no one, not one should interfere with it....
React to Sodom. They're a German Thrash metal band who had a big influence on the early black metal and death metal scenes. Any of these songs would be fine - Nuclear Winter - Christ Passion - Bombenhagel
My son's just turned 8 and we've started guitar lessons together, this is the first song we learned and I've heard it my whole life and always found it beautiful, but I've gotta say, I always cry every time I watch my tiny man play it ❤
I'm normally more into the heavy hitters, but I have a special affinity for this song as it helped me cope at a time when my wife (then g/f) was in the hospital. My best man relayed that story at my wedding and had the DJ play this song :)
This channel means that I get to see other people react to videos, outside their comfort zone..... While I'm an atheist, I love the fact that you listen to stuff that challenges your beliefs while still being respectful to all. your interpretations may be off, in my opinion, sometimes, But it is wonderful to see the open mindedness still out there. you guys are awesome. and the fact that you love good music in general, Makes me a very happy man. Much love.
My uncle’s wedding video montage was set to this tune, and he was more than happy to find out if the kids thought it was rad to see Metallica showcased at a wedding. Haha.
Having already known that you've been through a lot in life, there are still some new things I'm still finding out about you. It is amazing and consoling that you found your peace in all of this and that you have each other. I apologize for my rant from The Unforgiven II video. I took it too emotionally. I was being immature (I'm still standing by my view though :D). Sori! Vin! Every time I watch your video, there is something inspiring in what you say that just stays with me. Thank you for that.
Things you guys have to check out The Pretty Reckles - Take Me Down The Pretty Reckless - House On A Hill The Agonists - Panophobia Powerwolf - Let There Be Night
It’s just too fuckin creepy. Like it talks about Ed Gein cutting someone’s face off, which actually happened. It’s one thing to talk about demons or whatever but that was a little too real

Great that Sori has the creative mind to come to her own conclusion on what it meant. The viewer or the listener is to bring a part of themselves to the art with their experience. Never ask an artist ‘ what does it mean’. It means whatever it is to you.
I remember getting The Black Album on the day it came out. It was hugely anticipated by the metal community at that time. Probably more than any metal release around that time. Certainly a bold move by Hetfield to begin singing and writing more emotionally vulnerable material, five albums into a big career.
I'm actually in this exact situation that the lyrics describe....... weird. known the song since it was released and only now watching this do i have a connection to it lyrically
Good seeing you two again thanks for the shout out. I am currently digesting the Otep conversation and will be sharing my thoughts with you there but I really want to make sure I take it in because a lot of important and interesting things were brought up in that conversation from what I can tell. Sori I hope you feel better soon, I blame Vin for daring to be sick next to you and getting you sick lol jokes aside seriously hope you feel better soon being sick sucks. Damnit Vin you need to stop saying things that remind me of myself, I mean seriously most of what you said in this video sounded almost verbatim things I have said to other people. The emotion subject is touchy for me because I am a stereotypical man in a lot of ways but have also been told by many people that I can be one of the coldest people they have ever met. I actually am quite an emotional person but it just doesn't show up on ny sleeve, I too grew up in lower income areas with less than reputable neighbors to put it nicely and without deep diving my parents weren't the best examples of the law abiding citizeb either. In the neighborhoods I grew up in the more you showed what was percieved as weakness the bigger your target, not to mention I was white in mainly hispanic and black neighborhoods so I had to really go all out to prove myself and earn respect. So it just became a survival trait, a defense mechanism to show less and less the more it hurt. You know the phrases "man up" "don't be a bitch" etc well I couldn't afford to let those come my way because once they did it would only get worse. So I know why I am like that but damn is it hard to change. I also think that childhood shaped my view on trust as well, which I still have trust issues I am working on. 2. 2 people in my life I would say I trust. My best friend from childhood that helped get me out of the environments my family lived in and has been through the fire right next to me, and my sister who lived through the same things. Trust is difficult and I am very contradictory, I don't trust people but I do trust people. I trust people to be untrustworthy, they will let me down. I am slow to trust but once it's been earned boy howdy does it carry value. So yeah right there with you which is kinda funny to me because we are completely different people that lived on opposite coasts and yet independently reached very similar conclusions and outlooks. So please if you could stop copying me that would be great lol. Much love to you two and now its time to listen to part 3 of the Otep conversation.
I agree Vin...I TRUST NO ONE. The one person I trusted completely abused me and ruined my childhood. That's why I click with Jonathan Davis so much because we went through the same Shit and the people that we TRUSTED were the ones actually hurting us. I take so many anti depressants and anxiety meds because of the one person I completely trusted hurt me in so many ways so NEVER AGAIN. GREAT VIDEO GUYS...
Hetfeild wrote this song while on the phone to his then girlfriend, he was playing his guitar at the same time and came up with the intro, he wrote it for himself but the rest of the band talked him into putting it on the album, the added an orcastra, and it became one of their 5 number 1 singles from the black album, James plays the solo aswell
Smattering of postulation doesn't matter... (copypasta) "It's absolutely crazy, that was the song that I thought was least Metallica," said Hetfield, "least likely to ever played by us, the last song anyone would really want to hear. It was a song for myself in my room on tour when I was bumming out about being away from home. It's quite amazing, it's a true testament to honesty and exposing yourself, putting your real self out there, and taking the risk, taking a gamble that someone's either going to step on your heart with spikes on or they're going to put their heart right next to it, and you never know until you try." He continued, "That solidified, I think, that we were doing the right thing, writing form the heart about what we felt, and you can't go wrong that way. It has become an unbelievable song live, and from the New York Hells Angels putting it in their movie to sports people to people getting married to it, all kinds of stuff, people relate to it. I'm grateful that the guys forced me to take it out of my tape player and make it Metallica."
James never actually wrote this for this or any album. It was a personal work he wrote for himself. His deepest most emotional thoughts. Lars overheard him playing it and begged him to put it on the album.

Seeing Sori get completely lost in the music is great! This is truly a wonderful piece of music from the great James Hetfield

I had it play at my wedding as well
It's my wedding song 🤘
My wife and I danced to the elevator version (just James, acoustic, and orchestra).
It's not a shame if you cry to this song because it is simply beautiful.
my mom always sang this to me and my two little brother when we were babies
Your mom must be awesome.
My mom sang «angel of death» by Slayer
My mum sang this is the new shit by marilyn manson when we were young

I have seen Metallica back in 1992 when they were promoting their famous black album featuring this song in Miami...…..
This song always makes me feel nostalgic. It was my dads first dance with his wife when they got married.
When I am down this is the song that will lift me up and make the day better
get goosebumps over my whole body from this song!

Next Metallica...something off their debut album...
*The Four Horsemen*
That would be a good head to head reaction...Mechanix vs The Four Horsemen.
Mechanix production is so poor...I prefer The Four Horsemen
ChicagoTRS it's their own fault for blowing half the production budget on drugs
Seek and destroy!
K Zed faster, but the lyrics aren't as good

Sori Was So Relaxed
Just subscribed, I’ve watched a few over the past couple weeks, but you guys grew on me.
Beautiful song!!
Probably the best Metallica song I've ever heard have always loved this song..
I'm afraid to say you never really heard much of the band...Try To Live is to Die
Fade to black
you are an amazing couple :') love your channel, your conversations, everything! regards from Chile :)
This was one of my first advanced guitar tabs I learned in past
It's quite amazing, it's a true testament to honesty and exposing yourself, putting your real self out there, and taking the risk, taking a gamble that someone's either going to step on your heart with spikes on or they're going to put their heart right next to it, and you never know until you try."
He continued, "That solidified, I think, that we were doing the right thing, writing form the heart about what we felt, and you can't go wrong that way. It has become an unbelievable song live, and from the New York Hells Angels putting it in their movie to sports people to people getting married to it, all kinds of stuff, people relate to it. I'm grateful that the guys forced me to take it out of my tape player and make it Metallica."
