Another cool fact about this song. The producer has said that when they recorded it in the studio, they played in the dark..with a single candle lit by Jim Morrison. I can’t imagine what that was like. Absolutely incredible.

The song was "made" for the movie, so to speak. What's even more interesting is that JIm's own dad was a Rear Admiral in the Navy during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which was the event that gave our government the "excuse" to start the Vietnam war. Really interesting when you realize that.

The story of Oedipus (very abridged):
Oedipus' parents were rulers of a city state. When his mother was pregnant the oracle made a prophecy than he would one day kill the king (his father) and take the queen (his mother) as his wife. When Oedipus was born his parents abandoned him in the wilderness where he was found and raised by another family. When he grew up he decided to go visit the oracle and the oracle told him he would kill his father and take his mother as his wife. Oedipus loved his (adoptive) parents so in order to avoid that prophecy he left and when on a journey. During his travels he came across a noble entourage that tried to force him out of their way, so he just killed them all, including the noble. Later he got to a city that was being sieged by a chimera and he killed it. As thanks the population made him their king and he took the old king's wife as his own with whom he had many many children. Later he found out that the noble he had killed was his biological father and his wife was his biological mother.
Jim Morrison was a poet. He was very different and was just himself. Rest in peace Lizard King. Play Roadhouse Blues.
They aren't classified as metal of course but most metalheads love The Doors, you should do more by them. And Jim Morrison was a genius.

This is the deepest song in rock history. The use of the faux sitar tuning the absolute perfect playing of Densmore carrying the groove . Just the whole ambience is stunning.
When they played this live, Morrison said " mother I want to fuck you( in the screaming part) while he mimicked it. He was arrested for that performance. This tune has been studied believe me. Morrison really was a great poet.

Johnny Oldfield and everything after the title shot is amazing. Most people don't realize that the title shot is about twenty minutes before the end of the movie.

Actually, The Doors are a somewhat unrecognized forerunner to metal, in that, they were arguably the first popular rock band that had dark sounding music and lyrics, which is epitomized in this song. This album was unlike the others of the time, and it got mainstream exposure mainly because of Light My Fire. Mostly everyone was about peace and love at that time, but Jim and The Doors were on a different page to say the least...
Morrison wanted to scare the shit out of those hippies with reality. Plus he thought the hippie culture was nothing more than a middle class phenomenon.

A very interesting fact for those who don't know is that his dad was involved in the highly questionable Gulf of Tonkin incident as commander of US Naval forces (according to wikipedia and some online research I did), an event whose consequences brought us into the Vietnam war and changed America in it's own unique way forever afterward. Kind of an interesting coincidence considering Jim's standpoint and societal position at that time.

Robbie Krieger's guitar in the beginning is hypnotic...
The Doors are among my favourite bands of all time. They had a completely unique style of jazz/blues/psychedelic/rock/poetry which has never been surpassed or imitated. This particular song (although very different from most of their songs) is a masterpiece and one of the oddes ones they ever did. A very bold choice for a first listen of the Doors, I love it!
The End (written by Morrison) started as simple breakup song for his girlfriend at the time. In 1966 The Doors were hired to play as the house band at the Whiskey a Go Go -club and there, this song went through a transformation to an experimental rock song with spoken word poetry and cabaret. The beginning and the ending are still the original the breakup song but throughout the performances the band expanded the middle part and Jim Morrison added his own poetry to the mix. The haunting organ of Ray Manzarek, flamenco guitar of Robby Krieger and jazzy drums of John Densmore fill in the rest of the song perfectly and give it easy-to-improvise-on and beautiful, but at the same time haunting, sound.
One night (21st of August 1966?) Jim was late for the gig and the rest of the band members went to his house to get him. They found him completely tripped out on acid but they still somehow got him to perform that night, Jim actually went along voluntarily. Morrison wanted to do "The End" and he improvised the middle part then and there. The rest of the band, having played with Jim for a long time, were familiar with this and they kept playing along, almost fueling Morrison, and let him do his thing. That night he sang the Oedipus part. In this studio recording it's "cencored" but that night he sang "Father - Yes, son - I want to kill you - Mother, I want to - Fuck you all night long!" (or something along those lines). They were instantly fired. Luckily they had gotten a record deal a couple of days before for Electra and they released their acclaimed debut album next year! Only two takes were done for this song during the recordings.
Morrison was very intelligent, very well read and an emotional artist. Towards the end of 60's he grew tired of the fame, "rock n roll" lifestyle and live shows. He felt that people were coming to see him do something controversial on stage and not really caring about the music. The last straw was an obscenity charge he got from a gig in Miami in 1969 and a conviction based on those charges in 1970. This affected Morrison deeply, he just "wanted to be a blues singer" and a poet. In 1971 he decided to move to Paris with his girlfriend to focus on his poetry and get away from the music scene. He was found dead in his apartment just a couple of months after moving at the age of 27. His death is a bit of a mystery since no autopsy was performed and the funeral was held quickly after the death with very few attendants. The official cause of death is heart failure.

Back in 67 in Los Angeles it wasn’t mandatory to take acid to understand The Doors, who we’d see all over town..Drugs were everywhere & many people I knew died or were negatively affected in any number of ways from overdosing, being shot, hanged, suicide, institutionalized ect..It certainly wasn’t peace in love but at the time it was very interesting..In retrospective I’d definitely advise against drugs, mainly the Psychedelics...

Jim Morrison was a great lyricist, poet, songwriter, and singer. Watch "Apocalypse Now", a great movie, and listen to the soundtrack. Also, try "The Doors", another very good flick. Very anti-war bands in the times(?).

This is a band that will take multiple songs to get it. Nothing underground about them. They were one of the biggest and most influential bands of the 60s, and they remain extremely popular in rock today.

I think i've heard live recording somewhere where Jim clearly sings "Mother... I want to... f**k y*u!". So yea, Vin is right on oedipus. But for obvious reasons no such lyrics could be put on commercial lp's back then.

It was the start of the Doors’ tour, and as the band launched into "Touch Me" from the soon-to-be released album The Soft Parade, Morrison stopped the band and started on a long rant about love and hate. After someone from the audience poured champagne on him, Morrison took his shirt off, held it over his crotch and simulated masturbation. Morrison was also accused of exposing himself on stage. Concert promoter Ken Collier ended the show after things got too chaotic with audience members on the stage and Morrison repeatedly shouting for revolution. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and Morrison turned himself in a month later. He was found guilty on charges of public exposure and profanity, but not lewd behavior or public drunkenness. Pretty accurate. Vin & Sori should see the Johnny Depp narrated documentary on Netflix. Morrison hated his parents so much he put on the liner notes of one of their albums that his parents were deceased. His father was an actively serving Naval Admiral.

About the part where "The killer awoke before dawn". None of that is supposed to be take literally. The whole idea of killing the father and "embracing" the mother comes from the idea that the father represents your "place in society" which you are expected to fill (given the idea that a son should follow in his father's footsteps). The mother represents everything that is you. Your true nature and desires. Basically the "killer" is looking inside of himself and becoming who he feels he truly is.
As for the meaning behind the whole song, Jim himself said that the meaning would change slightly every time he heard it or sang it. However the idea I like the best is that "The End" is a simple description of "the end" itself; Death, and what he believed it was like to come face to face with it. Death itself is the "beautiful friend" referenced in the first and last parts of the song. When he sings "Can you picture what will be? So limitless and free", he's essentially saying that the idea of the unknown afterlife fills him with wonder and a sense of freedom. The reference to Oedipus ties in with the idea that one only knows their true nature when they come face to face with The End.
Although having said this, The End started out as a simple goodbye song; maybe to a lover or a friend. The original was a short 2-3 minute song consisting of only the first verse and the last. All the other verses and parts in the middle were added from various live improvisations that Jim would perform and eventually become known for. At any rate, it is clear that The End describes how an "End" can also be a new beginning, despite one not necessarily knowing what comes next - whether this means a chapter in your life is closing to lead on to another, or life itself is coming to an end.
In the classic Greek tragic story, Oedipus unknowingly killed his father and married his mother. When he found out he blinded himself. The story gave rise to the concept of the Oedipus complex in Freudian psychology - the idea that a man loves his mother and sees his father as a rival. The opposite, for women, is the Electra complex, based on another Greek story.
I can see what you're saying here. Of all the times I've listened to this song I never thought of it that way. "Killing" the societal norms and embracing ones natural self makes perfect sense!
Blackbird, absolutely. I'm 58 and remember Jim and Janis. Their songs are meant to be "felt" at a primal level; not to be analyzed in this way. I wasn't entertained by these two.

Killing of father figure is overcoming the authority image of father figures in your life, like your teachers, your boss, your president, your priest, or your actual father, and realizing that societal hierarchy is not this rigid predefined thing, and that you are free to define your own place in society, by getting rid of these artificial father figures that need to be "killed".
My mom introduced me to the doors as a kid. They are quite amazing!
But I must say I am a 47-year-old Australian musicians singer-songwriter. And I am so happy to see channels like this where the younger generation are listening to the music that I grew up with. Superstitious nonsense! We're still hearing this kind of stone aged nonsense even in the 21st century, I say again that this Satan stuff is just primitive nonsense. Morrison was just a kid with too much fame at too young an age. The temptations of psychedelics during the sixties were quite commonplace and did not kill off the entire generation who also used them, no amount of prudish Christianity explains the deaths that you mention. Numerology has been blown away by science, Satan worship is a Christian myth promulgated by ignorant fundamentalists who choose science denial and ignorance and those deaths are nothing more than coincidence.
A lot of people die of drug overdoses at 27 because of how long it often takes a person who gets into drugs to end up dying from them. It is a little more than a decade after the mid teens.

You’ve never heard the doors?!?! Whoa...just listen to the 96 cd titled greatest hits...you will be surprised to learn you have heard a few of their songs and won’t be disappointed with the tracks...this is a really bizarre one to begin with, it’s the final track on the cd...the end for a reason!
I was thinking that this is probably an odd introduction-to-the-Doors song. I'm pretty sure that this was a alternate take to what made the studio album, as I believe the chanted "fuck" part is nonexistent on their eponymous debut album. At least, not on the version I have, and not on the aforementioned "Best of" collection. Seems it appears on a 40th anniversary version of the album, though. I would have gone with Break on Through or 5 To 1 or some such. Anything off the LA Woman album is almost straight up blues rock.
The End was made in two takes. Only because the producer would not accept perfection.. according to the CD cover in the 40th anniversary album edition. :)

Don't forget guys, these boys were influenced by some HEAVY psychedelics when they made this tune. Their name "The Doors" is a reference to a book called "The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley. Basically opening your mind through the use of psychedelic drugs. By the way, do I hear someone knocking on YOUR door while you were recording this?
Now you two need to see 'Apocalypse Now' (1979)...where 'The End' plays over the napalm bombing of a (supposed) North Vietnam village...EXTRAORDINARILY powerful and HIGHLY recommended.
The way I interpret this song is it’s kind of a dream. Fuzzy or cloudy jumping from one situation to the next. Strange or perverted thoughts allowed to manifest.

About the term "toxic masculinity", it's turning into a broad-brushed term (similar to that "mansplaining" bull-shit) that people are using to write off every valid argument. It originated as people being sick of the super-macho male characters in media (which I think are fine, because there are guys like that... and it's not wrong for them to be like that), and now it's just escalated to the extremes.
"When the Music's Over" is an amazing tune. I actually like it more than this song.
My question with the masculinity being pushed in movies and such is how much of a factor does it have on men... you said it’s okay because some men are like that. But are they like that because the movies taught them how to act if they identify with male. Also it probably stems from the child watching the father to see how to act. But also that father could have been subject to masculine movies when they were young. It’s hard to say but interesting to think about

Are women always putting on make-up because they see it in the movies, they see their mothers doing it, or companies are constantly telling them they need to cover their face in order to be beautiful? Now women have severe self-esteem issues when they don't have make-up on. Do we need to start a movement to remove toxic femininity from the media to avoid self-destructive behaviors that women exhibit?

This song showcases the genius of Jim Morrison. Jim was a brilliant improvisational poet. He was influenced by the poets of the Beat Generation of the 1950's who would improvise poetry to Jazz rhythms. Jim did something similar in this song (among others)

What is so great about the lyrics is how many different takes people make of it.
And very wide and open discussions it opens up.
Morrison pushed the barriers. He explored the depths of the human psyche. Unknown how much he personally identified with it. Some think he was a nihilist and others think he was putting on a personae for artistic purposes. However you slice it, he was certainly interesting and talented.
The band had been slowley getting the song together for a couple of months 66. Yhe album was released in spring of 67. Light my fire put them on national chart. Imagine in fall of 67. Parents are taking their 12. 13. 14 yr old daughters to see the pop star Morrison. Then the doors singing Gloria. Some blues tunes. Break on through. Soul Kitchen. Then pull out this song. Mother i want to ? Was said. I remember reading a critic saying that the teenage girls and Boys left the show crying cause the songs took them to a place that made them think . Parents didnt cry foul. They were aware of what happened. Elvis got into trouble for dancing like a black guy. Morrison took a path of we are all capable of getting to your primal feelings. Satisfaction? Animals? Them? This is way beyond music. Sgt. Pepper was take compared to this.

did you know Jim’s dad was a military man? Jim was against the war. His parents tried to meet him backstage at a show in DC back in like 1968, but he never met with them. They were kept away and he slipped out of there. His mom was very upset about that.
The song started out as a simple break up song to a girl Jim knew. It morphed into this version as they played it in clubs night after night. The oedipus part actually was born at the whiskey-a-gogo in California. After they performed it there, they were thrown out and banned from the club. The club is still there today and is still open.
You should watch "Apocalypse Now Redux" the song takes another perspective with the images of the film.
I highly suggest Apocalypse Now (original) instead of the Redux (later) version. Redux jams in extra scenes that bloat and meander, and ultimately lose the tone and momentum. Original is tight, focused, and a powerful wonderland journey into the boundaries of barbarous (like its spiritual source Heart of Darkness).

Call it drugs.... call it whatever, but to be able to be as fucked up as he was on drugs and still produce his inner most thoughts in a perfect voice..... theres a lot more to him than anyone will ever understand.

As a Doors fan, I love how this band sparks discussion in this way, regardless of what people feel about it's being 'good' or not. I would argue that a lot of the darkness they were exploring in this was explored consciously (to an extent). This song was released at the height of 'Flower Power', so they were quite dissenting to be exposing the dark energies of the cultural revolution. They were intelligent guys, and Jim Morrison certainly had a destructive element, but he was also a sensitive artist, who was tortured by the violence and rage inside of him, and he channeled that into his art. I guess what i am trying to say is that this song might be a lot more ambivalent about dark sexual urges, than being an all out celebration. There's also a song called 'Peace Frog' which supposedly was inspired by one of Morrison's lovers having an abortion. I think the point about lost innocence is brilliant, I hadn't thought of this song in that way before and I think it is right.

Very good analysis for people not familiar with Morrison or the Doors. The Blue Bus is a drug reference. The song came about after a break up Morrison had. What you need to realize that Morrison would insert parts of poems he wrote into various songs. He was a fascinating man, a true intellectual. Another note Morrison's dad was a Navy admiral and he was kind of giving an F you to his parents, who at one point he claimed were dead while very much alive. If you want to read a good book about Morrison and his life look for No One Here Gets Out Alive by Danny Sugarman.
Steve Vaughn it’s not a drug reference, the blue bus refers to the bus soldiers would take when being drafted or when they were enlisting during the Vietnam War.
Guys , The End is pure symbolic poetry. It is not a linear story that you can just figure out from the lyrics. It is far more Universal than that. :)
