- Here I show how I remove poor growing soils mainly made with wood chips and switch to a better draining, permanent soil that breaths better and will allow for better growth in this Hass avocado tree. This is "A" way to change the soil not “the” way. There are different methods.

awesome tutorial. I would remove the soil dry, but doing it in a bucket of water makes much more sense, and is not as harsh on the plant. great job
I've found that there are fewer problems when I use the water bucket. I've done it with just shaking off the dirt, squirting it off with a hose and soaking it in water. The soaking seems to work best with faster growth recovery times.
Great video, I like using the top pot soil. Learned a lot, like that water pot, to get the old soil free.

Good to know. I literally just did this to my avocado. Roots were looking horrible. I added some bat guano to help with rooting.

Once you’ve repotted your plant, do you ever repot again? I grew mine from the seed but noticed some of the smaller under leaves turning yellow/brown.

I've tried fixing the soil of two avocado trees now (in-ground) with sandy loam / pumice mix. Both went into crazy shock and died. I did not try the bucket of water method though.

great video. can you please show in your videos (or make a video) all the products you use (soil brand, fertilizer, etc. ) for those of us that have less experience. i am assuming all the products can be purchased from home depot/lowes? i believe i am not giving my trees the nutrients they need.
floridacritter Ok I will make a video. The bagged soil I use is only sold at a few places out here in Southern California. The soil available at the big box stores isn’t a good permanent soil for containers. I don’t recommend them. Too many wood tree products ground up in them that will rot inside a container. I’ll make a video on how to make a good permanent growing soil for avocados in containers or in ground. Thanks for the idea.

I watched another video on potting a young avocado and he said it should be kept in mostly shade till its 3 years(I think) old so it doesn't get sunburned. This doesn't compute for me. In nature they would grow in full sun, or where ever they sprouted from fallen fruit, wouldn't they?
No that would be too long, if you wash the soil off like I did in these videos you should keep it in morning sun afternoon shade for a few weeks and then ease it back into full sun.
What I hate when you flood a new planting like that is the stupid perlite all floats to the top. Then it doesn't aerate the soil by the roots. I wish they'd make it heavier.
Thats why I use pumice, I also put a layer of sand on the very top then mulch to hold all that down.

The soil I use is Ph neutral. About 7
@@TheElsinoreGardener I planted a Joey and a Fantastic back in April 2020 and they are still healthy but haven’t added any new growth! I built new mounds for each and transferred directly from store pots! I think my PH here in Louisiana May be a little more acidic; I’ll double check! It was a 20 gallon container and I think I got them at Costco a few years ago.

So I need some advice my friend.
I bought a tree which I'm growing in "bad leaching soil". The tree is bearing fruit for the first time. I think it's about 4 years old grafted.
So I want to repott it but kinds afraid I might screw up.
Do you recommend me to do the same as you did and fully clean the roots then repott it or just reduce the existing soil from the roots and add better soil.
And I heard it's better to t repott the tree when it's dormant, is that right?
I would reduce the soil if you want it to hold fruit, it still may not though.
So wood oil is bad for the avocado roots. I'll have to remove my wood chip mulch and replace with leaf mulch.
I crush up avocado leaves and put them under the mulch when I plant.
Sorry to say this kind sir I know you're trying to help but you led me to believe I was going to learn about a soil mix all I learned is that you got some kind of a secret soil mix that you didn't want me to know LOL I'm exaggerating I know but I really thought you was going to show us how to make a nice sandy loam or something I still gave you a thumbs up

Eddie Sanchez I did get it from Home Depot. I then made this video removing the poor soil around the roots. It’s now flushing new growth all over the tree.
@@TheElsinoreGardener Thanks for your reply. I do not know if it was the nursery, but for some reason the avocado failed 3x on me. It was heart breaking. My home depot is from Florida. I really do not know which nursery they are using. But i would give it another shot, and use your method. I will also look for better grafting. Thank you.
Out here in CA Home depot sells trees from La Vern Nurserys grown in Piru, CA@@eddiesanchez9095.
Just about half of them don't die and it usually takes a few years. They slowly fade away
or wilt and I think it's root rot. The problem is I usually waste 3 - 4 years.
If I replant in the same location I dig up the soil and replace it so if it is root rot rot I won't recontaminate
the new tree.
Would you recommend using perlite in soil with sand for avocado trees?
Do you have a video with a step by step of what you put in your soil? I don’t think I can get same brand soil as you so I will have to make my own mixture. I don’t want my avo trees to grow in this wood chip potting mix I have bought heaps of for all my plants. Pumice rocks I think is another thing I think I might put some of in soil and volcanic rocks. Just for plenty of air pockets. Anyways good video as always mate. Cheers 👍

How much worm casting and fertilizer for that size tree?
2 cups worm castings and 1/2 cup fertilizer at first. Then fertilize every other month
where do you get your large pots for avocado trees?
I got that on at a hydroponics store. They no longer carry them sadly

Where did you get the soil and how much was a bag?
Chief Louie The soil is sold at Laguna Hills nursery in Santa Ana. Also Green Thumb nursery in San Diego. I think they are about $12 a bag
Unfortunately, not sold on Amazon or someplace more local/central San Diego. Green thumb nursery is more than an hour's drive from me.
Is this safe to do in the fall?
I would instead of keeping it in bad soil. It shouldn’t have any heat stress and adapt well

Thanks for all your super helpful videos! I could use some advice from the master... So I tried your method here to transplant to a larger pot on a Lamb Hass that I bought at Home Depot (La Verne). I mixed my own soil using the ingredients you showed in your other video on soil (similar ingredients/proportions as Gary's Top Pot). I also added the layer of sand to the top like you did in one of your other videos to keep the perlite from rising to the top. I didn't dip the roots in water because when I took the tree out of the Home Depot container, most of the soil just fell away anyway. I did use worm castings and Dr. Earth like you recommend. Unfortunately, after more than a month my Lamb Hass still looks exactly the same as when I bought it. It's seems to be healthy but there has been no new growth at all and no new buds, like it's in "suspended animation" or something. Meanwhile, the Little Cado that I bought the same day is thriving with tons of new growth, although I haven't transplanted it yet. I live in Manhattan Beach, CA so the weather never gets too hot or cold (high 80's, low 60's). I did move it partially out of the sun during the super hot days we had (low 90's), and moved it out of hot afternoon sun permanently. I water the tree every other day, and have watered the leaves with fish emulsion three times in the past month. I even sprinkled some Osmocote on top of the soil a week or two ago. The pot is bigger than the one here in your video. I read somewhere not to bury the roots too deep in the container, so I removed the top layer of sand and am thinking about removing some of the soil at the top. I'm worried it may just start to die. Any thoughts on what might be going on, or what I can try to start getting some new growth?
During the end of the year these trees will slow down going into winter. If you want to try to get some more growth now. Try a deep watering with fish emulsion once a week. That should give it the quick nitrogen boost it may need.

I've used Fox farm, but for longer term in containers I want more a mineral based soil that a wood product soil.
I used fox farms best choice I ever made plants tripled in size in 2 months
