Oh wow I have to show my husband this. How easy it is to mix the soil and repot an avocado tree and get it to grow. Well with him it might not. Lol 😅 because he don't listen and he kills almost any fruit tree we have. I think he over fertilize it or don't water enough. Thankyou for sharing your video.
The soil is the main thing, these big box stores soil is a wood chip based soil and not a mineral based soil like these plants want. Also, fertilize a very little bit at first and just on top. Don’t mix compost and fertilizer into all the soil. It only goes on top. Use a few inches of mulch and water often
Yes I have been struggling with my avocado tree for sometime almost 2 years and the tree is doing terrible from watching your video I learned a lot and I can wait try all of your suggested I'll be contacting you soon I'm the guy that doesn't have a green thumb
Just make sure its in good well draining soil, it gets plenty of water and lightly fertilize about 6 times a year at 1/2 the once every 4 month requirements. That's what I do. Less fertilizer a little more often
Thank you for having shared this method. Others have said wood (cedar wood in this case) should be avoided in soil or mulch for avocado trees as it can eventually cause root rot. Your thoughts/experience on this?

You can use a raised bed. Remember 90% of avocado roots are in the top 12” of soil so make it wide enough and above the ground level as high as the amount of soil you have to backfill the raised bed. I like at least 12” above ground level

If you plan on eventually putting it into the ground in a year or two put it in a 15. If you want to keep it long term in a container I would just transplant it once into a very large container. Hello, I recently received a Joey Avocado. Does this method work for this type of tree. When's a good time to transplant on ground, when the trunk turns to green to brown or the thickness of the trunk. This is my 3rd avocado tree...one died of over watering on ground and the other the Texas heat toasted it. 3rd time the charm I hope.
This works for all avocado trees you want in a pot. I wouldn't grow Fuerte in a pot though. If you have intense heat think about building a shade structure for those months when the tree is young. I build shade structures every year
I grew an avocado plant from seed a year ago. Now something is eating it’s leaves. I check it at night and haven’t found anything yet. Any suggestions?
I was recommended FoxFarm soil for avocado trees. Is that true? I was given a tree by surprise and would hate to see it perish. I have no clue how to care for it, so I'm doing my best.🙁
I wouldn’t use that for long term trees. If you want to make your own soil add some bags of decomposed granite to the Fox farm stuff about 2 to 1 of DG to Fox
amtouti abdelmalek In the container, when it’s above 90* I water almost every day to keep the top 3-4inches moist. Deeper in the container is always moist but the feeder roots are in the top 1/3 of the soil and need to stay moist.
This tree turned out to be a counterfeit GEM that was being sold by a grower when they were not generally available to the public. It did fruit one year and got some damage where I had to cut it way back. It has struggled ever since. I think it’s just a Hass variety
awesome video, but where in the world do you find these kinds of pots and dollys that go with them? asked my local nursery and they just looked at me like I was crazy.
@nomadrhodes - kind of late, but… you can find 25gal pots at hydroponics store, often. Not a lot of places are making 40gal any more. Those were originally for the Marijuana growers, before they switched to greenhouse growing, so they’ve downsized. I just drove over 100 miles to a place in Ukiah, CA that had 40gal. nursery pots. They may still have, selling on eBay in fact. Picked up 15 to hold a bunch of trees I have, (I’ve got black walnuts, so dealing with juglone poisoning in my soil).
I have one mango. It got damaged a few years ago and I had to cut back 4 feet of truck. It has since grown at least a dozen new limbs. I’ll do a video on that soon.
The Elsinore Gardener Hello. I managed to upload a video that is dedicated as a question for you! Please watch it and offer any tips. My plants are a seedling avocado and grapefruit. My mango seedling is at my apartment across the state. Thanks in advance
You don’t seem to be into white washing your trees do you think it’s a waste? You believe young trees planted in mounds should be draped with shade cloth? I planted Joey and Haas maybe 3/4” trunks in March and they seem to be stunted! Any advice? Thanks again for your time and expertise!!🙏🏻
Nice video. Will this container be it’s final home? Will a container help or hinder production? I have a couple of gems on order and am strategizing how best to plant. We live up by Sacramento. Thanks
scott Hello. I don’t foresee this being its final home but you can keep this variety in a container because it is not an aggressive grower like Hass or Fuerte. I can also baby it and move it around when we get or 115 temps again. I think 3 years in this pot is max I’ll go.
Very nice... Do you know where I can buy a "Gem" Avocado tree like that one you are planting? I'm in the Los Angeles area in southern California? Thanks
If the container is large enough (like the 40 gallon I have) Most trees will be good in it with the exception of Fuerte, its a wild growing tree. I'd say 4 years or more if you plant it right
It can but more than likely it will not. If you want to grow from a seed you can graft a known variety on to it and get a know fruit taste, sooner than waiting many years to find out if a seed tastes good or not.
I live in Oakland CA and neither myself nor my neighbor have had any success with avocados. The leaves fall off, the trunk turns black and it dies. Not sure what we’re doing wrong. Probably the soil. How often do you water them? That might be our issue.
Sounds like overwatering leading to root rot. Best practice is to mound the soil 18" high & plant on the mound. That allows for better drainage. Also use well-draining soil.
@@TheMultisportGeek - sandy or loam soil. Check out "how to plant an avocado tree" on Gary Gragg's channel. I tried posting the link but UA-cam deleted the comment.
No, these trees last about 2 years in this size pot until the need to be replanted into a larger container or the ground. See my last video on what the roots look like after 2 years
Yes you can. I have a Reed avocado that has given me fruit the last 2 years in a 20 gallon container. After I harvest this years avocados I’m going to up pot it into a 40 gallon.
@@TheElsinoreGardener -I have a dwarf avocado less than a year old in a large pot and I’ve noticed that some of the tips of the leaves are turning brown. I’m watering about 4 times a week. Do you think I’m under watering it? 🤔
Did You purchased the container from Costco? I think I got the same one yesterday for my holiday and Pinkerton. Where did you purchase the caster tray?
Thanks. I saw that caster tray on Amazon last night but wasn’t sure if it was strong enough. Now I see that it looks plenty strong. Are you drilling extra holes for drainage? I have a 5 gallon Pinkerton and Holiday from Maddock nursery. The roots are well established and I want to up pot before they get root bound. would it be too bug a jump to go to a pot this size? My problem is the grow bags that they came in are 16 inches deep so it’s hard to find a 15 gallon that is deep enough
@@TheElsinoreGardener these were grown from the pit. I think one plant is almost 4 years old and is 9ft tall. It's in a 50cm diameter pot and is looking very healthy. I guess I just need patience. Apparently though the trees can be injected/inocculated to speed up the flowering and fruiting process.
Hello The Elsinore Gardener, I have a plant that is in a 10" pot and it seems to be outgrowing it. Do you have a way I can contact your directly for your advice?
I have a question. Can you grow them in a pot permanently? I know avocados are a big tree and everyone is telling me they must go into the ground. I only have a balcony and would like to keep mine in a pot.
Abi Nor-Mac I think you can grow them long term in a large container. You can also keep them trimmed to the height you need to fit the location. Remember in a container the tree relies on you for consistency in food and water. For long term I wouldn’t use less than a 40 gallon container and that may not be practical on a balcony
On my plant, new leaves appear and then dry up and fall off. New leaves follow the same pattern. Plant is in my kitchen in pot with light on all day. What is wrong?
WHAT?! You cut the pot? Just give it a few hugs and a gently lift? This seems like the most wasteful and dangerous way to repot ANYTHING. Cutting down the side of the root ball with fence clippers???
You can’t trip over big trees like this. They are both too tall and too heavy. The pots are a lot cheaper than the tree. Also avocado trees are super sensitive to transplant so it has to be as smooth as possible.
I agree with this… you could accidentally cut or damage roots you don’t see. Especially with tropical trees, which is the only thing I’m interested in. I like the rare and exotic
Hello, great video. Are avocado trees good to leave in a pot? Asking because I bought a tree still on a pot, just like yours and you placed it in a bigger one. Are you going to leave the tree in the pot or are you going to transplant later on?

This works for all avocado trees you want in a pot. I wouldn't grow Fuerte in a pot though. If you have intense heat think about building a shade structure for those months when the tree is young. I build shade structures every year
I grew an avocado plant from seed a year ago. Now something is eating it’s leaves. I check it at night and haven’t found anything yet. Any suggestions?
Not without more information
Do you have any Hass trees? Also, what kind of soil do you have in your yard? Thanks!
Kevin Ahn I have a Hass that I featured in the “How to supercharge your avocado tree” video. The soil where I live is terrible.
Thanks,
Exactly what I was looking for!
Glad I could help!
Hi mate, how often do you water you're avocado tree? Cheers dude
amtouti abdelmalek In the container, when it’s above 90* I water almost every day to keep the top 3-4inches moist. Deeper in the container is always moist but the feeder roots are in the top 1/3 of the soil and need to stay moist.
Nice idea. Is this a regular avocado seed from supermarket?
patricia Ramsammy no this is a grafted avocado tree
The Elsinore Gardener ok thx👍
Thank you for this great video.
✨
Do you leave it in the pot then eventually plant it in the ground?. Or can it remain in the pot and bare fruit?🥑
Dawn Anderson Hi Dawn, it is still in the same container. It gave me 2 fruit last/this year and has about 10 on it now.
@@TheElsinoreGardener Wow, fantastic, you've worked hard. 😊🎉🎉🥑🥑
How is it doing in the pot now? Is it fruiting?
This tree turned out to be a counterfeit GEM that was being sold by a grower when they were not generally available to the public. It did fruit one year and got some damage where I had to cut it way back. It has struggled ever since. I think it’s just a Hass variety
awesome video, but where in the world do you find these kinds of pots and dollys that go with them?
asked my local nursery and they just looked at me like I was crazy.
Dolly is from Amazon. Pot come in the spring time at Costco
Picked up 15 to hold a bunch of trees I have, (I’ve got black walnuts, so dealing with juglone poisoning in my soil).
sir I just started a mango seedling, wondering if you have any experience with mango trees
I have one mango. It got damaged a few years ago and I had to cut back 4 feet of truck. It has since grown at least a dozen new limbs. I’ll do a video on that soon.
@@TheElsinoreGardener Please!
The Elsinore Gardener Hello. I managed to upload a video that is dedicated as a question for you! Please watch it and offer any tips. My plants are a seedling avocado and grapefruit. My mango seedling is at my apartment across the state. Thanks in advance
do Avocado tree survive cold winters?
Some can handle the high 20’s but not much more than that
@@TheElsinoreGardener thank you
Nice video. Do you wait for the top couple inches of soil to dry out first or do you keep it consistently moist?
I wouldn’t say dry out. If the mulch is thick enough it shouldn’t dry out. I like to use a moisture meter for my container trees.
I whitewash all my my trees check out some of the videos
Will they grow to full size trees or will they grow to manageable size?
they will grow until the roots totally fill in the container. Then you have to up pot or put them in the ground
Thanks again! After 3 years where would you put as it would be rather large by then?
How would you repot if in a nicer pot you would not want to cut or in a clay pot?
When it’s ready to come out of the container the roots will be all through the soil and will come out of the container fairly intact.
❤❤❤
👍
Very nice... Do you know where I can buy a "Gem" Avocado tree like that one you are planting? I'm in the Los Angeles area in southern California? Thanks
SuperDusty111 Adam Tropics in Temecula sells them. Check out their website
@@TheElsinoreGardener they are known to sell fake GEMS -STAY AWAY!!
Are there any types of avocado trees that do better than other in containers?
If the container is large enough (like the 40 gallon I have) Most trees will be good in it with the exception of Fuerte, its a wild growing tree. I'd say 4 years or more if you plant it right
Nice.any avocados yet?
Yes many
if i plant a hass avocado tree from seed does it will gives a good fruits in the future ?
It can but more than likely it will not. If you want to grow from a seed you can graft a known variety on to it and get a know fruit taste, sooner than waiting many years to find out if a seed tastes good or not.
I live in Oakland CA and neither myself nor my neighbor have had any success with avocados. The leaves fall off, the trunk turns black and it dies. Not sure what we’re doing wrong. Probably the soil.
How often do you water them? That might be our issue.
Gantry Crane it probably is the soil. Do plant them in ground or in containers?
The Elsinore Gardener We’ve always planted them in the ground.
Sounds like overwatering leading to root rot.
Best practice is to mound the soil 18" high & plant on the mound. That allows for better drainage. Also use well-draining soil.
@@jacqdanieles Awesome. Thank you! What type of soil is best for drainage?
@@TheMultisportGeek - sandy or loam soil.
Check out "how to plant an avocado tree" on Gary Gragg's channel. I tried posting the link but UA-cam deleted the comment.
What plant is in the square bin to the right at the end of the video? 👀
Those were Cantelope
Is this the permenant home for this tree ?
No, these trees last about 2 years in this size pot until the need to be replanted into a larger container or the ground. See my last video on what the roots look like after 2 years
Why destroy a pot you can use again for another plant. Re-use helps the environment.
Thats just the way we did this one. I didn't want it to fall apart, helps with transplant shock too.
Can the avocados grow large in a pot? I’m planning on growing an avocado tree but keeping it in a pot not the ground.
Yes you can. I have a Reed avocado that has given me fruit the last 2 years in a 20 gallon container. After I harvest this years avocados I’m going to up pot it into a 40 gallon.
How often do you water the avocado tree?
In the winter about 2 times a week. In the summer, and because I have great well draining soil about 5 times a week. In extreme temperatures, everyday
@@TheElsinoreGardener -I have a dwarf avocado less than a year old in a large pot and I’ve noticed that some of the tips of the leaves are turning brown. I’m watering about 4 times a week. Do you think I’m under watering it? 🤔
For potting does it need drainage whole?
Tomas Chen Yes it has 6 5/8 holes in it so the excess water drains. The peat moss holds the moisture the roots need to thrive and not soak in.
Didnt think you could use cedar chips around plants.
What I do is pick up the fallen avocado leaves and put them under the mulch. Been doing it for years. When I add compost I do the same thing.
Do i do the same technique with my hass avocado tree? Im getting one delivered
Check out the new video on soil
Where did you buy your GEM Avocado tree from ? I haven't been able to find a nursery that has any to sell.
Dee Mee I got these from Adam Tropics in Temecula California. They have a website you can see them at.
Did You purchased the container from Costco? I think I got the same one yesterday for my holiday and Pinkerton. Where did you purchase the caster tray?
Will Thomas Yes I got the pots at Costco. I got the trays off amazon. Or eBay. I’ll check and let you know.

My problem is the grow bags that they came in are 16 inches deep so it’s hard to find a 15 gallon that is deep enough
can it stay in the pot for its life?
In this size no. In much bigger ones yes. I have a Sharwill in a 40 gallon that I will be doing an update on to show.
What is the ratio on the honey water?
3 to 1
How old is the tree? I have two avocado tress in containers here in tropical Indonesia that are 3 years old and no sign of flowers or fruits yet.
Make sure they are grafted trees or you won’t see fruit for years.
Where can I buy this tree?
Try the Fallbrook nurseries for the hard to find types
Hello The Elsinore Gardener, I have a plant that is in a 10" pot and it seems to be outgrowing it. Do you have a way I can contact your directly for your advice?

Hi where you can buy your Gem avocado tree tyou
Ri Le YT Right now there isn’t many places. I got mine from Adam Tropics in Temecula California. Check their website for availability
The Elsinore Gardener - Thank you very much. I sincerely appreciate your quick and informative reply. God bless.
@@AbiNomac look for the Wurtz Avocado also called Little Cado. They grow only about 10 to 15 feet. You can grow them in 25 gallon pots indefinitely.
@@joekidd777 - Gos Bless you Joe. Thank you so much.
On my plant, new leaves appear and then dry up and fall off. New leaves follow the same pattern. Plant is in my kitchen in pot with light on all day. What is wrong?
Charlotte Lane Are you watering enough?
How long will the tree stay in a pot??
Cindy Rampersad I plan on up potting to a larger container in a year or so.
@@TheElsinoreGardener How long from seed in pot to tree in ground?
@@TheElsinoreGardener how do you pot up with the sandy soil. I am guessing you don’t cut this container once you do this.
wow where did you find a Gem ?
Vrinda Bhalla Adam Tropics in Temecula ca. Sells them.
WHAT?! You cut the pot? Just give it a few hugs and a gently lift? This seems like the most wasteful and dangerous way to repot ANYTHING. Cutting down the side of the root ball with fence clippers???
I will sacrifice a pot not to destroy a root ball. Period. Especially if the tree has been in the pot too long.
You can’t trip over big trees like this. They are both too tall and too heavy. The pots are a lot cheaper than the tree. Also avocado trees are super sensitive to transplant so it has to be as smooth as possible.
@@TheElsinoreGardener I was afraid for the roots I suppose the outside ones can just grow back
@@AustinJQueen That makes alot of sense I didn't really think about it like that
I agree with this… you could accidentally cut or damage roots you don’t see.
