Make the best avocado and citrus container soil. Just Do It!

- In this video we make the best avocado and citrus mineral based container soil. Soil is the growing medium, not the nutrition source. Wood by products that are made and sold by the big box stores will, over time, continue to decompose (rot) and do the same to the root structure of these fragile plants that are in and around it. Root nutrition comes from the compost and fertilizer we add to the top of the soil layer (as in nature) that, as we water will work its way down into the root structure.
Our basic growing medium consists of:
1 part All Purpose Sand
1 part Pumice
1.5 parts Peat Moss
1/2 part Perlite
As you fill the bottom 1/3 of your container, water in the soil, again on the 2nd 1/3 of soil added and then add your fertilizer of choice and worm castings along with the sand layer we showed to the top 1/3 of the soil. Add mulch and watch it grow.

The best video on soil mixture for Avocados. Really appreciate it!
Glad it was helpful!
This is great for people who can't get top pot.
I've had comments from around the world how to make a Top Pot type soil.
Can you tell us how to make top pot soil?.
Thank you .
thank you so much, I've been growing 7 avocados they are around 1 year old and i'm so happy to see them grow

Thank you so much! I finally found a great soil mix for my mango, avocado, citrus, & java plum/duhat tree! My search has ended!
Glad to help
This is an excellent video. Soil amendment s are important for your plant health.
Thank you
Love to hear you have learned from Gary Matsouka! Your Avocado's look beautiful! 💗💗
Thanks. Gary knows what he’s talking about
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
Thanks for sharing. I live too far from Gary's nursery and am preparing to change the mix in my potted plants. This is great!
Glad to help
Never knew about that 1/2 in sand layer on top. Ty very much kind sir
Necessity makes you try different things, good to see the results work
Great info, thanks! That soil looks great!
It holds moisture well and won’t rot roots thanks
Super helpful and really makes sense! How generous of you to share your knowledge freely like this. Gardening really can unite us all and as you alluded to at the beginning of this video I think we could use a little of that - right? Thanks again ;-)
You’re welcome
Thanks dude!
Thank you
Hello from New Zealand. Great video! I also use this recipe after watching Gary's videos of the ingredients that go into the top pot mix. I see you have about 60% permanent materials. I use about the same but less sand and more perlite just for the weight factor when trying to move pots around. Good tip about sand at the top. My citrus love this mix. The extra oxygen really helps to grow them healthier and faster.
I have many of my containers on wheels that I have on my Amazon links. If you have concrete they allow the heavier containers to be moved
Scott , thanks again for making such informative videos. Like you, I think top pot is the best soil I’ve used for potted avocado trees. Since I’m 3-4 hours north of laguna hills nursery I use 1 bag of top pot with a scoop of fill sand from my local sand / gravel supplier mixing them in my cement mixer. This gives me enough material to completely fill up a 15 gallon tall pot with the mix. I also have a large tub to rinse off all of the old wood chip mix off my avocado trees before repotting them in this mix. So far 100% successful doing this.
Bill, I’ve had a lot of people tell me they would love the Top Pot but can’t buy it. So I made the video for those people in other parts of the country and around the world as it seems.
Yes top pot is probably the best I’ve ever came across. We’re fortunate to have access to it. Have you thought about making a simple chart showing a measurement of how much of each ingredient to mix together in a batch for say a 15 gallon or 25 gallon size container ? For example 1 bag of top pot with one scoop of sand mixed together is the right amount for a 15 gallon tall pot .
Thanks 🙏
You’re welcome 😊

It really is!
Great videos. So much detailed information. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍Im about to plant my 2 baby avocado trees, i dont have yard space and use containers. Started them from seed. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for reading my post and replying. Today is the day...will be placing the avocados in your made soil. I like your yard. Wish i had one that big. Have only a small strip of area for gardening, and I container garden a lot. Thank you
Thank you, great video! Ever tried rooting Citrus leaves? got tutorial about it. Have a nice day
If you go back to one of my first videos I transplanted a Mexican Lime tree cutting given to me by a neighbor years ago. That tree has now been in the ground for a few months. I’ll do a follow up on it soon

I wanted to come back and say thank you for making this video! I replanted my pink lemonade lemon tree in this potting soil and so far no shock! I removed the previous potting soil (I saw you do this in a previous video)... I def will make my own potting soil for now on (until I can find Gary’s top pot soil in my area).
Glad to help. Gary’s soil is great but if you can’t find it this mix is very similar

And can i use play sand?
🙂 It looks like a great mix to me 👍
It’s worked for me.
@@TheElsinoreGardener 🙂👍
First time seeing your video. I just subscribed. A lot of great information. I just potted a small Meyer Lemon tree (8 inch pot size) tonight and could have saved a lot of time searching for the right pot, soil mixture and fertilizer. Will have take it back up and repot in the morning to correct some planting mistakes and bad information that I obtained in my searching. Thank you very much for the information.
Thanks for watching
Just subscribed. Good videos, thank you!
Thanks for the sub!

Thanks for these videos, very helpful 👍
You deserve your subs, you’re very nice and your videos are awesome.
Thanks
great video and great tips! I've been trying to find a good source of what kind of avocado mix to use for my avo tree... it seems really finicky in comparison to my lemon tree... so I'm going to try your soil mix! Thanks for the video! One more thing, do you add any compost/ worm casting/ chicken manure?? Or it only gets its boost of nutrients from the mineral based soil and citrus/ avocado fertilizer that you add??
I do add a little to the top of the soil and allow it to absorb as you water the tree
Liked and subscribed, got 5 trees scheduled for delivery on Friday.
Thanks John. What kind of trees do you have coming in.
@@TheElsinoreGardener 3 different varieties of avocado.
@@jhonnyblade702 He meant which ones?
Thank you for this info. I tired another soil mix from a yotubers but my plants aren't thriving. Your mixture makes complete sense. I will be repotting my citrus with your ingredients. My question is do you put your fertilizer/worm castings on top of that top sand layer, which means you need to remove your top mulch layer first? Or do you add the fertilizer right on top of the mulch? Also what type of top mulch do you use?
I like to move the mulch and pour it under, but, when the feeder roots grow into the mulch later, and have a grip on it, I put the fertilizer on top and water it in.
You deserve that 👍
thanks
yay, i have been waiting for this one! ❤️ thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, very much appreciated!! what pumice and perlite are you using? is it from HD or Lowes?
They are available at Lowe’s. A nursery may have larger amounts
The Elsinore Gardener thank you! i found everything except pumice, cannot find pumice anywhere in my area. what do you recommend in it’s place? or should i start search to buy the pumice online somewhere?
Hi, thanks for the great video explanation. I wonder if I could substitute the sand with the pumice and perlite? I live in zone 7a so my trees have to be moved at least twice a year. Previously my soil mixes were very heavy and moving even a small container wasn't much fun. I'd hope I could mix it in a way that was less dense. Thanks again for your tips, greetings from Germany
The goal is to have a good growing medium. Trees need whats best for them , not us
New subscriber here! Thank you so much for sharing this mix with us. I always see the bark 511 method being used but always thought sand would be a better option. Much appreciated.
One should never use a wood based product as soil. Soil is mineral based. You’re welcome.
This is the Top Pot Recipe I have from Lauguna Hills: 35% peat moss, 30% Pumice, 20% Perlite, 10% Sand and 5% charcoal. What fertilizer do you use? I also apply pine bark mulch. Before using a granular fertilizer, I remove the mulch. Instead of worm castings I apply worm tea about every two weeks.
Top pot is my favorite bagged soil
When I apply the granular fertilizer, could I apply it on top of the sand layer?
I thought Gary mentioned that too pot is 1/3 sand, 1/3 perlite&pumice, 1/3 peat moss. Then add some biochar. Where did you get this different version of recipe? Please share. Thanks
Pickup 4 ...1 gal trees..I need them to be the size of your hass or reed...I need super growth..lol
New trick next video
For lava rock would you use the same mixture
If that’s all you have experiment with the mixture to make sure material doesn’t escape through the holes of the container
Great video!! You gained a subscriber! :). ... What type of sand do you mix in your potting soil??
All purpose sand
@@TheElsinoreGardener thank you!
will all all purpose sand work or should it be coarse rather than fine sand, like river sand/horticulture grit over landscaping sand? Edit: Ended up figuring out that the tractor supply sand is what you want most other brands are filled with clay.
I use all purpose sand, experiment with what you like and check the results.
In another one of your great videos, you added azomite to your soil. Do we add this only if you were using Gary's Top Pot or you would also add it into your homemade soil as shown in this video? Sorry, for so many questions, but your videos have inspired me to do better in my gardening efforts.
You can add it to all our soil recommendations
Great video! I'm nursing along a new potted avocado tree and have been having issues with drainage in my soil. A question for you -- is the sand that you put on the top of the soil part of the "part" mixed in with the soil? Or is that top layer of sand additional to the 'part'? Thanks!
That top layer is additional to my soil mixture. Water will flow through that sand layer and into the soil mixture.
@@TheElsinoreGardener thank you!
thank you for sharing! Citrus question: I picked out an Improved Meyer Lemon that looked really bushy compared to its peers, and brought it home only to find out it's from cutting. Should I return for a grafted one? I plan to grow it in a pot only, and have no experience with growing citrus. Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
If you want fruit fast, you should. I have a tree grown from a cutting in 2015 that still hasn’t produced any fruit. That tree is over 6 ft tall and healthy.
Great stuff thanks! Are some sands better than others? There are all kinds available!
All purpose sand works best
Thanks for your videos.
You mentioned that you add fertilizer to the top of your soil. What type?
Any chance you can talk us through an avocado tree hUsbandry such as top working, fertilizer and changing pots.
Thank you
fire808surf I use an organic citrus/avocado fertilizer
I like your soil mix going to make some up. What kind of fertilizer would you use for citrus and how would apply it.
I use the citrus/avocado organic fertilizer that the big box stores sell. Just put it in the top section of the soil and let it stay around the feeder roots to break down.
Do you think large particle diatomaceous earth or calcined clay could be substituted for the pumice? I am unable to find pumice in my area.
Volcanic BBQ lava rock can also work
Thanks for the ratio of each item. Is there a certain amount of worm castings you would add along with the citrus/avocado fertilizer on top of the sand layer? With your soil mixture, what size container will this fill? Do you know if this soil will also be good for Japanese Maples in a container?
I like to add a few cup fulls of worm castings. I add a handful of fertilizer every month. I use less fertilizer more often than the recommendation on the bag. That seems to work for me. Not sure about the maples, but a good soil for most everything it is.
Amazing video thanks so much, awesome. Could you please please tell me what is wrong with my lemon tree. It's about 15 yrs old and bears well. Unfortunately the fruit when ripe has a grayish colour on the skin. I live in a mountainous bedrock area in south Africa. The fruit is okay but I'm worried it maybe some kind of infection. UA-cam has so much information it's overwhelming. It would be amazing as I don't know what to do. Thanks so much
Sounds like a nutrition problem try an all purpose fertilizer and mulch
Great video! Can you also use All Pupose Gravel or Pea gravel instead of the pumice or lava rock? I live in Las Vegas and I haven’t seen pumice. The lava rock they sell at HD and Lowe’s are quarter size!
Pumice would be better. Look on amazon or try another nursery other than the big box stores.
Hey Troy, I live in Las Vegas, I went to viragrow on Delhi st (off Cheyenne) for my Pumice. Take a bag or a bucket. They even have sand for soil mixes and peat moss. Happy gardening!
Hi Avi thanks for that information on Viragrow Happy Gardening!
Any specific type of sand? Horticulural sand is harder to find, but will regular sand used for construction work? or beach sand or will salt be an issue?
Abdul Khan All purpose sand works not beach sand. DG mixed with the other ingredients in the video would work too
Love your videos, will paver sand work or should I just use all purpose sand
I've always used all purpose sand. You can try paver sand in a smaller plant maybe and watch the results
wow, great info ! how often do you water with this soil mixture?
Tony Hoang Thanks, when it’s hot I can water everyday and not harm the trees roots. But usually every other day
Hi, do we mix all material together or put it in layer by layer?
No, mix them all together until evenly mixed
Thank you
At the time of mixing, the sand is spread homogeneously throughout the potting mix, but you find that the sand in this potting mix separates and gradually moves down to the base of the pot over time? (sort of like how, at the bottom of every box of breakfast cereal, there is fine cereal dust that has separated from the large pieces). You used 1/2 part (half a cup) of perlite, but if I omit sand altogether from my own potting mix, could I use extra perlite to compensate? Personally, I feel that the coarser particles of aggregates (pumice and perlite) do a better job at aeration and drainage in a container/pot than finer grains like sand. But, the recipe you use works perfectly fine, judging by the fantastic results you are getting from it.
Thanks
@@TheElsinoreGardener I would have initially assumed that naturally acidic peat moss alone, and without added coir to 'dilute' the acidity, would be good for acidophiles like blueberries, but a bit too much on the acidic side for avocados and citrus, but in practice it works well for avocados and citrus, right? Do you find that the added sand separates out into a layer at the bottom of the container after repeated waterings, or does it remain evenly distributed through the peatmoss matrix? Cheers, Gary
Thank for awesome info can you add any links if possible to where you buy your pumice couldn’t find any

Thanks! For the sand does it need to be a certain type? I think I have seen fine play sand and coarse paving sand
All purpose sand works or even decomposed granite DG. Mix that instead of the sand if you like.
what are your thoughts on the 5 1 1 mix? would it rot because of the pine bark?
Soil needs to be mostly mineral based, add organic material and amendments to the top and let those filter down into the soil naturally as nature does it. All organic material breaks down and if you pack tree roots with only organic material that material will start to break down and break the roots down around them.
@@TheElsinoreGardener thank you! I'm going to try to grow an HLB tolerant sugar belle down here in South Florida using your mix.
Thanks for the video - how do you avoid/treat transplant shock? I recently transplanted one of my avocado plants I’ve been growing from a seed and it’s been about 1.5wks and the avocado still has drooping leaves. Do you have suggestions for what I should do? Thanks!
keep it watered well, keep it out for direct sunlight for a while.
Hello, this looks like a great mix! I have 2 avocado trees to plant. Can I use this mixture in a raised bed, however the root ball once I take it out of the black container will be in the ground about 5 inches. The 2 avocado trees are in 15 gallon black containers. Thank you!
Yes use it in a raised bed. I do.
@@TheElsinoreGardener Happy to hear that I can use it in the raised bed!! Should I put some under the root ball also? Thank you so much!
Do you prefer play sand or all purpose sand?
Gilbert Wong I use all purpose sand.
Hey Gary….
Where do you buy your peat moss at? What brand do you like? Same question on the worm castings and sand.
Love your channel 👍😁
Hello Robert, Gary is the brand of soil I use not my name. I buy most of my ingredients from local big box and nursery’s. Sunshine growers has good worm castings also my Amazon link has them.
Sorry about that 😁
I actually met Gary from Laguna Hills nursery last week. I bought 8 bags of the soil. I was also able to get my hands on a Don Gillogly. Thanks 👍
Can you use this soil mix for in-ground planting by mixing it with the natural dirt when transplanting or use a different combination?
Yes you can mix with native soil
how much is pumice at laguna? is it sold in what size? how much is the top soil bag at that nursery?
Laguna Hills nursery has a great supply of gardening supplies, check out their website or give them a call, they can answer those questions better than I
Would this mix be better than the keeping it cheap video mix?
No this is a better mix but some ingredients are harder to find
How would you change this for raised beds?
For trees nothing
Hello thank you for the video. I am looking at Home Depot and don’t see the sand. All I see is play sand. Can you give a link on what type of sand please. Thanks
multi purpose sand. Should be by the stones or try Lowes. Thats where I get mine
I can’t find sand this color. Can you send us pictures of exactly what you bought? Sand, pumice? I can’t find either of those here
There are a few bag of sand sell at Lowe’s which one do you use? Thank you!
If you wanted some more moisture retention how much vermiculite do you think would be good to mix in? half a part? a part?
I’m not sure it retains moisture as good as peat moss. I don’t like too much vermiculite in my mix’s
Do I need to add any soil to the peat moss/perlite/sand mix mentioned in the description? I was looking at Fox Farm ocean but not sure ifs it’s needed or how much to add.
Fox farm is not a good long term mineral type soil. You could add a little but in a container you need a mineral based soil for avocados
Thank you for the feed back. I purchased a grafted Avocado tree about 2 weeks ago (about 2ft tall) and I’m experiencing salt buildup from the growers soil/watering. Any recommendations to help this little tree recover? I’m on the east coast and keeping it inside.
You need to add charcoal, that’s in top pot also.
I don't add the bio char, but you can. I do like to add more sand on occasion. This was made for some subscribers around the world who asked how to make a similar basic soil to Top Pot.
How much bio char with this ratio as demonstrated would you add? 1/2 cup or more, less?
Great video, really helped me make an educated decision with potting mix (fixing mistakes that caused root rot). However, I do not have sand and only use perlite at the moment, can coconut coir be a substitute for the top layer to keep the perlite down as shown at 4:51? Thanks in advance.
I prefer sand throughout the soil mixture. It settles around the roots without leaving air pockets and allows water to flow. Try your ideas and report back your findings.
The Elsinore Gardener Thanks for the quick reply. I’ve attempted to treat the root rot and only time will tell how this goes. So far, a thin layer of coconut coir has prevented the perlite from floating. However I only have a small container that fits on the windowsill and I lightly water the seedling.
The potting mix I could make with what I had on hand was earthworm castings, perlite, and coconut coir, with only little amounts of the coir, and generous amounts of perlite.
Are you supposed to use biochar?
This mix is in place of of a high quality soil like the Top Pot soil I like so much. Not everyone has access to bio char or even pumice. I've found pumice and have it in my amazon affiliates list in the descriptions of the videos.
love that top pot but no one here sells it....what sand are you using ? is it from Home Depot or Lowes ? because even that is pink here !
Vrinda Bhalla I use the all purpose sand from Lowe’s
Is it safe to use perlite instead of the pumice ? I can only find small size perlite cheaply. My seed grown avocado is in bark/compost/perlite mix and most leaves are burnt - and it is not from sun exposure...probably salt...
Get it out of that soil and get it in a mineral based soil. Sand or DG, peat moss and pumice. If you want to use perlite it’s not as good but ok.
agreed big box store mixes full of wood products break down into sludge, sometimes pretty quickly. but i have also found peat moss to do similar.. do you find this at all with this mix? thanks
I don’t find the peat breaking down like that. I think because the sand and pumice is liberally used it slows the process and still does what we use it for.
With the Perlite In this mix.. Do you recommend pure Perlite? As I've seen ones with 70% mix of coconut coir in them. 🙂
I used what the big box stores sell. Trying to keep it easy. But if that’s all that’s available it will work.
i need the pumice size for search. Thanks
1/2 inch or 1/4 inch
I can’t find pumise in my area what can I use to replace it ??? Thanks I’m advanced 👍🏽

It’s true
Can you use coco core instead of peatmoss?
Yes but I think peat is a better holder of moisture
You mention nutrient should be on the top, but what do you use? Compost? Liquid fertilizer? How often? Also, couldn't you harvest the water drained below the pot and reuse it and do a close loop system? Ultimately it's just nutrient water going in a loop?
devildestiny555 Everyone has their favorites. I use worm castings and organic citrus/avocado fertilizer and put that into the top 1/3 of the final soil. Yes it will leach down but as in nature all the organic materials start on top. So I start it there.
@@TheElsinoreGardener do you think its ok to reuse the water?
You can but...... it could get a heavier than normal amount of nutrients than may cause burning in the plant. You can experiment and watch how the tree reacts or mix it with clean water and reuse. I’ve always wanted to use less fertilizers in the recommended amount a little more often.
@@TheElsinoreGardener thank you. I can only find black volcanic rocks at homedepot. I hope that work as pumice. :)
instead of peat moss which is acidic as it breaks down cant I just use coco coir?
You could
What sand did you use? I was thinking of using basically just pumice and vermiculite or a combination of pumice, sand, and vermiculite as the soil and throw organics on top.
Mathew Kheyfets You will need sand. I used the all purpose sand. If they have bags of DG. I like to use that too. Just hard to find.
@@TheElsinoreGardener Oh that's good.I was trying to recreate the Laguna Nursery potting soil too and by their recommendation, I was going to use some mixture of sand, vermiculite, and pumice. I will see if I can find some all purpose sand then and then I need to find pumice. And then I need to figure out what to do with the coco coir and worm castings I have. lol
Can I use this mix for mango tree??
Yes you can
Is it ok to replace the pumice with Vermiculite? Or maybe marble chips?
You can. I prefer pumice because it is larger and doesn’t float as much when deep watering
What can I use in place of pumice?
Aloha
Any porous stone, like lava rock, pumice etc.
What will be replaced for pumice, if I don’t have any?

A porous volcanic rock would be best even a bbq rock would work. But pumice would be best.

@@TheElsinoreGardener Thanks! Just to be clear, 1 gallon bucket of the sand, 1 gallon of pumice, etc.? I can now start thinking of the quantity of those ingredients I will need to buy.
