My 20 foot avocado trees in South FL took 7 years to produce. Had a pretty bad freeze one year that I thought killed them but they grew back from the ground up and had several trunks grow back. I just had basically the exact same scenario this year. My biggest avocado tree I grew from a seed from a large smooth avocado roughly seven years ago. It’s now about 17 feet tall. I’ve topped it twice. It’s a robust tree with thick branches and giant leaves. It’s got nice size avocado’s on it now for the first time that look really nice. I had two smaller potted grafted trees that started blooming at the same time in February. I placed them close to the big tree and the bees loved it. Now beautiful avocados

Just wanted to say that you are a natural when it comes to youtube. Your vids are really well done and you are incredibly charistmatic! Looking forward to more videos. We also try to grow some avocadoes here in germany, not really expecting fruits tho. A nice plant would be a good start :D
Tha NexT, thank you for your compliment, I appreciate it. I used to travel to Erlangen Germany for my job and I was impressed with the number of well developed gardens I'd see through my window on the train ride from Frankfurt to Nuremberg. Many people keep avocado trees as house plants so in your case just do step one and periodically prune the tree and as it grows transplant it to larger and larger pots. This page has subscribers in Finland and Norway growing healthy happy avocado trees indoors as house plants. Good luck!
Hi there, I’m the Kamakura Gardener, here in Japan. 🇯🇵 A dear subscriber of mine just recommended your channel. So, here I am to learn as much as possible about growing avocado 🥑 trees! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 Many thanks!
From south africa 🇿🇦. Bud your vids didn't just inspire me to grow a few trees.... you inspired me to convert all the un used space on my farm to mango, avo and macca. We have a couple hundred macadamia seedlings almost ready to start grafts (going to do around 5 a week till I'm happy with the success rate of the grafts then will take on larger numbers) I've taken around 50 mango fruit from an unknown tree but just need them for the seed (haven't decided what type of mango we will grafts on but will likely try a few different types)
Awesome and educational video. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. I live in New Jersey and I am trying to grow an avicado tree.
Thank you Sir for your Information, here in Bavaria (south of Germany) I don’t think that l’m capable of growing avocado trees, but you know I could try. At the moment I have 4 fig trees which I keep in the cellar with a grow light. I started only this year because I became a pensioner. I got a lot of problems with the pests on my fig tree. But yeah I would like to grow avocado trees, I don’t think that I will have much success. But if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Thank you for your work and information, may the Lord bless and keep you.😊
Thank you. So much information. The grafting process blew my mind. Not sure if I want to attempt so I might go to the nursery. I'm sure here in So California...there are plenty.
Zoe, Thanks for the comment. And yeah you'll save a few years if you get a 3 or 7 gallon tree from a local nursery. Go and pick you a nice tree and you'll have fruit in a season or two.
I did check with my local nursery and they do have already grafted trees. I wasn’t ready to commit to it, but once I figure out the best planting location, I’ll get it. We are in a good zone here in So Cal do I think the tree will do well. Your video had the most comprehensive information I could find. Great work!!
I live in the SF Bay Area. The house down the street from me has some of the best Avocados I've ever tasted. Might have to ask them if I can get a small branch. Thanks for the video. This was really informative.
@@SleepyLizard BackyardMangoes is my passion business away from teaching. I have over 20 trees on my 1/2 acre and sell/ship direct. Last season was a blast! this is my 2nd season. If I meet my goals for this season I’ll invest in 30 more trees.
That's really great. People love mangos and the ones they sell in the store aren't even close to what we grow ourselves. I'm sure you'll hit your numbers and have 20 more trees before you know it!
Your explanations are super, you go straight to point without dragging your videos/points soo much, you are also a natural in front of the camera ,I loved watching and listening to you. Much love from Kenya. here we grow avocadoes without much struggle as our weather is super good, hass does so well and we can't meet the demand of export. Doing it now...Keep up the good work.

I love your vids, i watch it into into the early hrs of the morning. I'm from South Africa & new 2 gardening but I'm loving it and you help alot. Thank u
I love your vibe! “Subscribed”. It was nice to see that you shouted out your audience. I am going to start an avocado 🥑 tree this weekend in NJ in February 😂 wish me luck! This video was comprehensive and very informative. Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you. I'm in Mexico. I've got 4 different seeds going. I know one is a Hass. The other three are very unique seeds. I'm digging the process of watching them break open and start to grow. Thanks for the info. Great stuff.
This biggest question I ask myself, quite often is... Why DON'T I live in a climate, where Avocado's can be grown.... whether or not I even attempt to grow them! LOL I could live anywhere I want, but I'm here in the cold! This is a really good video... I appreciate your explanations!
I tried the natural method that you showed. I put a Hass pit in a pot of dirt and quite a few months later I have a little tree about a foot tall. Cool!
they are so delicious. We are in our fall season and my wife and I share at least one every day. lately we been mashing them into white rice with nothing more than a little salt and pepper.
Like the locus tree that you find around fancy parking lots , The tree with the teeny little leaves everyone of The Locust trees that is planted in the United States is a graft.
I remember as a kid after I was done with mango, peach, aguacates, what ever fruit I was eating. I would throw it on away on and empty lot and next year I would be a little tree . I never had to do any thing to it ,water and sun would do all the work
Ok, when you mentioned teenagers successfully growing marijuana it gave me hope with my dream to grow an avocado tree... In my bedroom... In the UK... Currently in Autumn/Winter 😂🙏🏾
I am growing them in pots in a south-facing window in WA state... similar climate to what you have. Mine are happy with some light but will add some grow lights next week.
Thank you for the all great tips. You are very-very good in this demonstrations. I m lucky to live in avocados farms country. At here, I can have great Hass and quite cheap from groceries stores all year. I started my grafting citrus (mandarins on lemon or kaffir) since last year and hands pollinating cherimoyas.. nothing better than spending time in the garden during lockdown..stay save everyone.
I love avocado so much, but now they are out in c.t I tried realy, with my daughter to grown avocados so many times, but nothing come .I have also fertilizer and very good soil to grown?
Yeah I’m on mobile right now so I am not sure how to do a link but there are a few videos on my channel where I graft mature trees but yes I want to do a video of how to graft and create a multi variety
I'm sticking mine in Florida in the ground Everytime I eat one. We weren't around when they started so I'm letting nature take its course with these trees. I eat one everyday. 🍀✌️💛🙏
I had to pause the video to let you know that I already planned to do what you are talking about here! I just told my wife that she should contact you to find out about how to get scion cuttings to graft onto root stock I grow here in Arizona. But, I have a twist that makes it even easier! I plant my seeds directly in the ground. No transplanting needed! The disadvantage is that I have planted maybe a hundred or two-hundred seeds this way, and only got one to grow. But, I did get one to grow! Then an unprecedented hard winter withered it. (5 frosts -- 3 were hard frosts -- and 3 times we got snow! In Tucson, Arizona?!?) But, it grew! My neighbor brought me 4 plants in 1 gallon pots that I transplanted with no success. While I knew you put the belly button down, I did not know you do not cover it over fully! I cannot wait to try again. I like direct sowing because whatever actually grows must be genetically happy with my yard, right? I am so lovin' it! Also, I think of it like handing out fliers for a business; it's a number's game. What's the down side? You have to eat a lot of avocados! So, of course, there is no downside!
You have a way of explaining things that comes across really well. We live in Central Florida and just bought a Hass tree from a reputable online nursery. Can't wait to see how it does. I'm done supporting the drug cartels in Mexico and going broke in the process buying avocados in the store.
@@SleepyLizard will do. Do you recommend a Fuerte to plant next to the Hass so we can see a bigger harvest? Or is there another type B that would do better. Don't want anything that would grow super tall, and want good flavor, which is why I was going to go with the Fuerte. What say you?
We use to have two croquettes. Hurricane Charlie or Frances took out one of them. We sadly sold our home/avocado tree. The surving tree is still there. NOW I KNOW. I'm going to hack one of our seed avocados this week end and graft! Thank you!
Thanks much , always tune in to budding and grafting and your info was on spot . I subscribed and will be checking in . From Trinidad and Tobago West Indies . Best Regards thanks again.
Are the seeds in commercially grown fruit rarely viable? I’ve only ever been able to get one store bought seed to germinate no matter what method I try. It’s a lovely 16” tall currently! Greetings from Denver! Love the energy and details you share!
Hi Brian, Greetings from Florida. A guy from Denver just bought the farm next door to mine, he and his family keep cows, pigs, and talapia and we trade them for fruit, it's awesome! Yes, commercially grown fruit seeds are viable, in fact that's what we use to start our seedlings for grafting. I always plant more than I want because even though we treat them the same some make it and some don't. Stay close to the page, we give a lot of tips on growing avocados trees even for folks like you who live where it gets cold, good look with the tree!
So cool! I had never heard of grafting before :) think I’ll wait for my seedling to grow more until January and look for a good tree to do the graft with - I’m totally new to gardening sand this is all so fascinating to me. I wonder: does that work for mango trees too? I have a cute mango seedling I’m nursing back to life (my neighbor let the poor thing dry out lol) and I’m thinking grafting would do it good... and what if the graft isn’t quite from the same variety of the seedling? Do we get like a hybrid fruit?
Sarolia, yes we graft our seedlings when the diameter is close to the width of a pencil. You mentioned you location in another comment and i'm confident you'll be able to find a tree to graft from. As for mango, yes grafting works but unlike avocado some varieties of mango produce polyembryonic seeds which give you seedlings that grow "true from seed" which means grafting is not necessary, you will get the exact same fruit. Or, if your variety is not polyembryonic you can graft onto it. As for your question about variety the answer is no, you can graft any type of mango onto a seedling grown from any mango seed. The fact is, excluding polyembryonic varieties a seeding grown from seed isn't really a "type" of mango...it is a mix of the DNA from the mother tree and the other tree that fertilized it. The same holds true for avocado. Regarding what you get, no you don't get a hybrid, you get the exact tree and fruit that you took the clipping from. Think of it this way, the seedling (or rootstock) stops growing upward but continues to grow below the ground producing the root system. The cutting (or scion, or budwood) continues to grow upward. So if you graft a Hass cutting onto a seedling grown form a Wadlin seed you wind up with a Hass avocado tree that produces Hass avocados. I apologize because I keep giving you homework assignments but here's another vid that explains all the above in more detail: ua-cam.com/video/jlZ-MVwayQU/v-deo.html

Thank you so much for sharing the way to graft avocados. I bought a plant already grafted . Please don’t ask me for the variety or the tree the graft came from but we still got 6 normal sized avocados . Now the tree is getting taller and a lot of shoots coming and hopefully we might have more avocados. I bought the plant from a nursery in Sydney and I am in Melbourne. I hope things will go well. Thank you again for sharing this interesting video. Jose from Melbourne Australia
The "scientific" way of pollinating is literally just collecting pollen and brushing it on. The same as most cannabis growers. But I think it's all about the climate control for them. Great video though. Very educational. Thanks!

Before hurricane maria came the older tree gave me around a hundred avocado and then it stop given avocado. Last winter I started to put around the roots the coffee but the liquid coffee that is to throw out with Epsom-Salt and this summer it started to give a few avocados. I'm disabled but I learned how to grow many things.
I wish we had some of the varieties you have. Im growing 4 varieties and just started grafting. Is it possible to graft an A type and a B type to the same root stock.
@@frasercoastfoodforest3092 Yes. You can graft multiple varieties to the same rootstock and create a tree that gives different types of avocados. The flowering type doesn't matter you can mix A and B. I've yet to see it with my own eyes but everything I've read says you can successfully graft 4 varieties onto the same tree. I'm very grateful to live in this part of the world. A lot of avocado and mango varieties originated in South Florida. Australia looks like a pretty nice place too! Imma check out some of your vids.

Good luck!

We have a couple hundred macadamia seedlings almost ready to start grafts (going to do around 5 a week till I'm happy with the success rate of the grafts then will take on larger numbers)
I've taken around 50 mango fruit from an unknown tree but just need them for the seed (haven't decided what type of mango we will grafts on but will likely try a few different types)
wow! that's a heck of a project and new life direction. I wish you the best of luck!

Thank you for your work and information, may the Lord bless and keep you.😊
I don’t think you guys can grow avocados over there but I happen to be there during the asparagus season one time and wow is it delicious.
This was really informative.

good plan Lisa!
In Tucson, Arizona?!?)
But, it grew!
So, of course, there is no downside!
totally a numbers game

Jose, that's great news. Good luck on this year's crop.
thank you po for the very clear explanation. I used to plant in the backyard but they are dying.
What part of the world are you in?
The "scientific" way of pollinating is literally just collecting pollen and brushing it on. The same as most cannabis growers.
But I think it's all about the climate control for them.
Great video though. Very educational.
Thanks!
