I lost $70 due to this trunk rotting issue. It's very common issue in QLD Australia. I got new plant and hoping that it grows well. I think prevention is better than cure. Well drained soil may do wonder
Thank you so much! I’m overwatering! It’s getting cold here in tennessee so I brought my avocado trees inside and two are dropping! One is curling! So I’m going to get a fan in my greenhouse area and really try to get some oxygen to them to help dry them out! I’ll be so upset if I kill them! Thank you so much!
hey man i have the same moisturemeter as you 2:54, i recently moved my small avocadoplant from water to soil with perlite, cococoir and potting mix and gave it a lot of water, there is still a little pool of water at the bottom where the drainage gets collected. my moisture meter only shows a 3 on the moisturemeter tho, so its still dry. Is this normal? and should i only water my avocado when it hits 1? thank you!
Appreciate the video. My Tree is 4 feet tall and never been pruned till 3 days ago. My bad. It's in a brute garbage can. After this video I drill many holes in the bottom and placed a lid under it. How much water should I give it and how often. It's about 3 years old. Feel like I could improve its quality of life with some more info. Tha ms. Awesome Video.
My avocado tree recently just started loosing leaves (the bottom leaves, it has healthier looking leaves that grew at the top)... what could have caused this? The leaves that fell also had brown edges. Am I over watering?
Hi Scott I'm having a problem with my avocado, where the leaves are starting to brown at the edge. The soil is moist so I don't think it's over watering but was wondering if it has anything to do with using tap water. The plant is on my kitchen window and gets direct sunlight for a few hours a day. I live in the UK so the sun this time of year is not to strong. Any thoughts would be very helpful. Cheers
My few month old tree started drooping. The soil was dry and it was about time to water. So I watered it and it bounced back a bit but then started drooping again and it is slowly dying. I pulled it out and the feeder roots look great. The taproot has a "bark" like layer of brown over it but i peeled some back and underneath it is nice and white.
I just finished bottom watering my avocado plant. The soil is less than it used to be before I watered him when the soil was dry. None of the soil fell out of the pot when I cleaned the sink. Is the soil going to go back to normal level when it dries? Or should I add some more soil? Thankyou so much for this video. 😃
I have an avocado avocado sapling that was in water and one day i refilled it and saw a little later that the leaves and the top of the sapling was drooping, i started to panic because i thought it was beginning to die so i was seeing what could be the cause of it and thats when i saw your video on root rot. What was strange to me however was that you say that it typically happens because of over watering and a lack of oxygen but i had never put it in dirt so can root rot still happen when its in water only? I watched your video on the soil mix that you use for your saplings and made that same mix for my own sapling and its been in there for about 2 days now and its still droopy. I also dont think its becuase of over watering because ive only watered it once since i planted it in the soil. If you have any clue what i could do i would greatly apreciate it. Thanks in advance
Hi! Thanks for your comment - it’s pretty common to get some drooping after planting - it’s a stressful time for your trees. Keep an eye on the moisture and it should pull through 🤞🏻
It should be ok give it some time in the dirt. It prob needs fertiliser too. Water hasn’t got any food in it so it may just need time and a good feed. Also light? How much light does it get? I never let my avo seeds stay in water long. Soon as I see the root shoot out bottom I plant it.
@@NMW80 thats exactly what I was thinking regarding the fertilizer and the light, its still droopy but there is no signs of it being to die but ill put it in light and add fertilizer and ill update in a few weeks.
What about avocado trees in a really hot, tropical climate. I live in northeastern Brazil, only a few hundred miles from the equator. It gets really hot here. I've been watering my trees every morning lately because of the heat. Also, what about wood lice and millipedes? How do they affect the drainage of the soil? I see lots of them in my pots (large buckets, actually).
If they’re dry, give them water :) I’m pretty temperate where I am, so I water less than you would have to, I imagine! As for wood lice and millipedes - I don’t like them. I haven’t had issues with them in my avocado trees, but they have been a pain in other containers. I use a granular pesticide to kill them. All the best!
What kind of avo tree do you have? There are some that handle the heat better. I would go for the types that are more suited to a tropical hot area. Also I wouldn’t give it full sun all day. Maybe shaded by some other trees etc would help with sun burn etc. I’m not an expert but just done a heap of research and growing a few myself but I’m in cool temperate zone of Australia so I’m growing bacon variety which is very cold hardy. I wouldn’t grow that where you live though lol.
@@NMW80 I wish I could tell you what kind they are. I just planted a bunch of pits from avocados that were being thrown out at a market. I have found that they are handling the sun well enough but it's a constant concern, except for my oldest one which I did keep in a shady spot for a couple years and is showing signs of burned leaves :( . Now it's getting hard to find shade in my yard. I might have to move it inside...
My almost dead seed that was in water and got bad root rot started shooting 3 branches after being put to the soil, but it got watered 3 days in a row now by accident, and i feel like its gonna get rot again if i dont do something about it. Soil is really wet, its like clay, for soil i used perlite, something called Treset here (eastern europe, croatia) and front yard soil (because i really couldnt figure out what a potting mix or peat moss is called in retail over here). I dont know if i should change the soil completely or not, or just let it dry real good this time? I dont know if this is a situation that leads to rot cause i would like to prevent that from happening again like it did when it was in water? Good work with the channel mate, keep it up
Hi! I’d let it dry and hope for the best - lots of water isn’t a problem, it’s when it sits in the soil for a long time or the soil isn’t allowed to dry. I would imagine that three days in a row, whilst not ideal, is going to be better than say - once every four days for three weeks. Let it dry out totally before watering. If you’re soil is draining well, you shouldn’t have too much of a problem 😊🥑
Hey Scott, question about watering, have you tried using an Olla? I'm trying to find out if this would be a good solution to keeping it properly watered without encouraging root rot. Thanks! Love your videos and I've been learning a lot!
Also do you have any exoerience with Arabica Coffee plant? I have one for around 1 year and it was doing good till now, but lately I am scared I will lose it :(
Thanks Scott for this info. Looks like my problem with my plant is over watering since my leaves are falling off and I have noticed the tiny flies all around the soil. What do you suggest to eliminate the flies?
Hi, very cool video. I'm curious your thoughts on watering a newly potted tree which was propogated in water. I've heard seedlings should be watered very frequently since they were submerged in water round the clock prior to being potted in soil. I've been watering my 6 week-old tree every second or third day, just before it dries out completely. Is there a time frame in which the avocado tree should be weaned from such frequent waterings? Thank you.
Mine has gnats it’s driving me crazy even with neem oil spray they just won’t stop producing more gnats . I’m going to try the bottom water ! Thanks . I probably need to use new soil as well.
Scott, I just discovered your channel and loving it. I have multiple avocado plants at home and they all grow so differently from each other. Which app are you using for the time lapse?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I think I’ve gotten used to watering my seedlings frequently and I am confused at what stage to dial back the watering. My first born (tree) is starting to show crunchy brown leaf tips. Could this be overwatering? My tree is indoors, a bright indirect window and we have a higher humidity here in Seattle. I would appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks Scott :)
Hi Scott. Love your tips! The top leaves on my tree are turning a little spotty yellow between the veins of the leaves. I recently watered with miracle grow added to water. Did I burn it or over water? She grows in a pot indoors.
Lots of unanswered questions in this chat string. I'll add mine to them, although I don't know why. Frustration I guess. I water my 38" tall avocado when the leaves are droopy and the soil is very dry like a desert. It perks up, then 2 days later it's droopy and dry again. That's crazy!! Maybe I need a bigger pot with more nutrient rich soil?
It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on without seeing it - but if the soil itself is bone dry after only a couple of days (always check the soil, not just whether the leaves are droopy) I’d recommend first checking that it’s soaking up enough water. Soil can become a bit hydrophobic after a while, so let it sit for a good amount of time (like an hour, just to be safe) in the water. If it’s still drying out very quickly, I imagine it may be in too small a pot.
Thank you for the video!! I have a question.. my pit propagation is still in water, it has 4 leaves and growing few more from the point where I pruned it a couple of weeks ago. Hi Scot Sir i am Siddiq from Pakistan i have a awakadu tree almost 8th years old it is a big tree but still not fruiting. Please give me sugetion how can I get fruits??please reply me. Thanks. ....
Hey Suddiq! I made a video about this recently ua-cam.com/video/gFRW-LiP8RY/v-deo.html I hope it helps! Check out the video, but your tree my still be too young - keep it well fertilised and keep waiting :) good luck!
Scott, please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A few months ago, I planted my avocado pit in the soil and it began to grow. It grew beautifully to about 1 foot with 5-6 leaves on top and tiny little leaves along the stem that didn't really grow into full leaves. Recently, I noticed that one of the leaves at the bottom was starting to wilt at the edges but I didn't pay too much attention to it. I decided to prune it, so I cut the top leaving just one leaf, the way you do it in your pruning videos. But now that leaf is wilting and tiny leaves along the stem also look like they are wilting. I thought that maybe it was root rot so I dug it up, but the roots look perfectly healthy. The only thing I noticed is that I had one big root and a very few small side roots. I thought it had too much sun, so I moved it to a partial shade. Nothing seems to help. Is there something I can do to save it. It seems to be dying and very quickly. Thank you.
I have grown two avacado trees and they took to much effort. It summer here and 38C outside. I have placed them outside and now their leaves aur getting brown like they are burnt. Can you please help. I have removed them from direct sunlight and watering them twice but not getting and results. Please help. Thanks
Sounds like you have some root rot setting in. Really well draining soil is essential. I also have some tips in this video. ua-cam.com/video/jf2tV3TCU-E/v-deo.html
Please help My avacado tree was grown from seed. Five feet tall. ... BUT started rotting from top so I've been cutting the brown top it continues so I cut more . The bottom is beautiful. But it's down to Three feet and going 🙁😏
Ah, that is frustrating! I haven't had ants on any of my avocados but I have on my lime. There are tonnes of pesticides that will work (both garden and household types). I spray my lime with vinegar when I see ants and it prevents them.
I just dropped some picture of my avocado that sprouted on your instagram with a few detail. I'd love some advice or if you see anything wrong. Thanks for your attention.
@@Jam-in-the-uk you can also put the amount you usually give when you top water in a bucket and then just put the pot into the bucket until it drinks everything up, it all depends on your pot really, if there’s one drainage hole, put it in for longer! as long as its not longer than 24 hours it should be fine :)
When you transfer from water to soil , you should keep the soil very wet until it slowly gets comfortable in the soil . That’s just my opinion and what I did . I also bought citrus plant food , and mixed it in with a bit of compost and cactus soil .
Carmella my plant completly turned around and is beautiful now, the smaller older leaves continue browned but it got many huge new ones with even better color than before. Thanks for the advice!

I also like the song at the end. Egards Katrien from Belgium
Hey, I'm not Scott lol but I've read that is better to prune them when there is no active growing (fall, winter) so on spring they thrive.... I've just prune mine and I'll see if it works

Thanks
The water I am using is bit salty
My avocado got soaked in water and started dying, the normal leaves are starting to become brown and I don’t see it growing much, what can I do?
Sounds like you have some root rot setting in. Really well draining soil is essential. I also have some tips in this video. ua-cam.com/video/jf2tV3TCU-E/v-deo.html
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree okay thx, the sapling is planted on the soil so it drains well, but it is still getting dry. I’ll watch the vid now
Please help
My avacado tree was grown from seed. Five feet tall. ... BUT started rotting from top so I've been cutting the brown top it continues so I cut more . The bottom is beautiful. But it's down to Three feet and going 🙁😏
How do you know how to test the fish poo water
There is no link there.
I noticed ants are eating my leaves, what can I do?
You must have leaf cutter ants? I have never seen ants eat leaves in my area. What country are you from?
Ah, that is frustrating! I haven't had ants on any of my avocados but I have on my lime. There are tonnes of pesticides that will work (both garden and household types). I spray my lime with vinegar when I see ants and it prevents them.
Scott Grows an Avocado Tree thank you
Did he say fish tank? I have a pond can i use that water…
I just dropped some picture of my avocado that sprouted on your instagram with a few detail. I'd love some advice or if you see anything wrong. Thanks for your attention.
I just didn't get how long you put them in the sink to get enough water!
2 minutes is enough
@@vastya.3255 Thanks for the response. I just put more than 10 minutes but still felt it's dry!
@@vastya.3255 Thanks a million 😊🌿
@@Jam-in-the-uk you’re welcome :)
I had mine in a water cup for like 8 months and it was doing perfect. Now I’ve planted it in soil and most of it’s leaves are turning brown
Hey Scott,
I am Katrien and am from Belgium.
I have planted for the first time an avocado like you described in your video.
My plant has now grown and is already 18 cm high.
We are now going to autumn and winter season. Can i prune it in winter or do i have to wait untill spring next year
I like your video's very much and they are helping me. I also like the song at the end.

Hey, I'm not Scott lol but I've read that is better to prune them when there is no active growing (fall, winter) so on spring they thrive.... I've just prune mine and I'll see if it works
This is how I water my avocado plant
Can't I just stick one of those miracle nutrient stick in the soil? I don't want to have to take the plant out to have to fertilize it.
The fish water is great idea except my kitty cats would not behave lol 😆
