The Design Flaw Behind MacBook Pro’s “Stage light” Effect!

  • The Touch Bar generation of MacBook Pro always had its quirks, but the thin-at-all-cost design may finally be proving more trouble than it was ever worth. The latest issue to crop up-dubbed “flexgate” by one of our users, Alex-reveals that the compact design for the display’s flex cables is prone to fatigue and failure, leading to a host of display problems that can’t be easily (or cheaply) fixed.

Nice design choice - As always for Apple. Produce excellente devices (hardware + software wise - No doubt!) and make customers "extremely happy". But: Introduce a design flaw, to make the customer pay every 1-2 years the full price for a new device again. Some plebs simply do not and dont want to learn.

They simply make good products (initial hardware state + excellente software support). But if the hardware breaks, they charge for a new device. The customer plebs simply remember their "happy moments" and buy the "updated, overpriced, follow-on device" every 1-2 years - They stay happy by the continuing product-quality and completely disregard the fact, that they are constantly getting ripped off by apple. (Works in other buisinesses too like "light bulbs" but not on the same scale. E.g. LED and conventionals could last decades by technical standards, yet they will break in a few years to keep the companies alive...) Planned obsolescence, a skill, apple really is good in and customers don't complain about...

Airpods are brilliant but they have to be replaced every 18months. Watches are likely to fail after 2 years. Dongles you have to tiptoe about not moving stuff whilst they're plugged in. You have to expect failures on their products, Apple Care is mandatory. Thinkpads usually come with 3 year return to base warranty, someone will literally come to your house and pick it up. You don't have to book an appointment with a 'genius' or whatever. It baffles me that anyone serious still buys these laptops unless they see it as a fashion accessory or must only use FCP.

Hi & thank you for your explanatory video. Recently my 2020 M1 Macbook Air began to display the same 'Stage Lights' problem. There was virtually nothing I could find online relating this problem to my model of laptop, & certainly no acknowledgement from Apple about it.
The Apple Authorised Repairer quoted me a repair cost of Aus $169 because my 3 year Applecare+ still has a few months to run. Without Applecare the cost is now apparently Aus$734.
I collected my laptop from the repairer this morning & was pleasantly surprised when told "No cost - Apple has covered it under warranty". My assumption is that whilst not publicising the fact, that Apple is aware of the issue, & I suggest that if anyone reading this has an M1 Macbook Air with the Stage Light screen symptoms that it would be worth taking it to an authorised repairer for a new screen (with a new flex cable). I should add that when i took it in the repairer denied that it would treated like other models which had been acknowledged to have the issue & for which cost free rectification was available.

This issue has just started on my 2017 MacBook Pro 15 inch and since it cost me and arm and a leg to buy I was hoping it would last to my second degree at uni starting next year but nope, it’s already starting to fail. I’ve always used apple computers but their lack of care for people forking out £2-3k for laptops some of which are students working long hours to afford them is genuinely despicable. Time to look at other companies.

My 2016 MacBook Pro 15 Touchbar was also affected and I had to buy a completely new display after only 1.5 years. In three Apple Store they didn't want to do it for free and said that I would be the first one with this problem, so I had to pay ~500€ for their design fail. Good to know that I've been lied to and they knew exactly about this flaw... Btw my keyboard is getting "stickier" too and one key already stopped working for a day.......

Hello. I have trouble on my Macbook Pro 2017, touch bar. A year ago, it starts flickering. I do not have enough money to fix it by LCD replacement. So, what I did was when the screen starts to flicker I just close it for a few hours and use it again. It takes only 15mins before flickering again, so, as I student its kinda hassle. Then, there was this online friend of mine who told me that I do not need to have an LCD Replacement, I just need to fix the flex. So, I want to ask you, if ever I fix the flex on my laptop is it a good move? Or do I really need to have an LCD replacement?

in late 2011, I got myself a £2100 GBP Mac book pro. I love it, but its over-heats, and I have had to get a table cooler. I have also had to instal FAN control. I love the Mac Operating system then and now. Than My graphics card chip fried and I was just in warranty to get the motherboard replaced ( it cost almost £700 GBP (free to me). The Mac book overheats still. So I have employed the previous measures. Its a love-hate affair with me with me. Lots of things to love about apple but lots of things to hate. I have an iPhone, 11.9 iPad Pro 2019, MacBook Pro2011 (as mentioned), earPods, iPod (x3). That said I am well established into the Apple ecosystem and they got me good and proper. It is difficult to detach myself. I can tell you that I will never get another MacBook Pro, too unreliable. I will be getting a razer Laptop and installing AppleOS on it on a dual boot set-up. It's possible using Hackingtosh process.
What can I say, I gave Apple all the chances in the world one would give. I wish Apple would sort themselves out as I would not want to go away, but at this moment I will not be getting another MacBook Pro. Sorry, Apple you messed up too many times on this product.

My work computer which is a 15 inch 2017 MacBook Pro Touch Bar which had an issue with the keyboard where 2 keys would intermittently not respond or double type the key pressed. After getting the keyboard replaced which in turn is the whole bottom case, they damaged the antenna module in the repair. After 3 weeks I got the computer back and found I had this exact screen issue after I got the computer back. They were hesitant to even address the issue as it was only intermittently doing this and I had filmed it several times happening and finally they decided to replace the screen.
Fast forward a month and 3 other computers in our department had the keyboard issue. Once the three came back for repair, 1 also had this screen issue and were hesitant to replace it. Then fast forward 2 months, colleagues 13inch 2017 MacBook Pro Touch had the screen issue.
If Apple are willing enough to extend the warranty due to the keyboard sticky keys issue, they should also extend warranty of the display with the flex issue.

Out of warranty, Apple will tell you that you need a new display panel, and possibly a logic board, and that you'd be better off buying a new laptop. That seems to be the way they do business these days. Someone really needs to start selling Hackintosh kits, both for desktop and laptops. Sell a kit of compatible components, and include everything but a Mac OS disk, and you'd get everything you want at half the price. Personally, if I could easily buy a nicely spec'd kit, I wouldn't care if it was heavier, thicker, or made of plastic. I (and I suspect a lot of people) just want Mac OS.

Nobody can sell "Hackintosh kits" because you will get sued for contributory copyright infringement by Apple, even if you don't distribute the disks themselves . They will claim that your "product" is designed only to facilitate copyright infringement by others (installing MacOS on anything but Apple hw is prohibited by their license) and you will have very expensive legal problems.
And if you don't label the kit as "Hackintosh", then you are just selling a regular PC that anyone could buy on every corner. Not sure what would be the point.
