  • In 2018, a number of MacBook Pro users-with models from 2016 and onwards-discovered a serious design flaw that causes the screen to fail after repeated opening and closing of the laptop over the course of a few years. The ensuing scandal was dubbed Flexgate, referring to the flex display cables causing the problem. Despite Apple’s refusal to acknowledge the issue, their latest MacBook Pros have a longer cable that may be attempting to make up for previous shortcomings.

    i brought the 2017 macbook pro thinking "Apple has the best quality and this macbook will last at least 5 years which is worth it for it's expensive price tag". Now i feel stupid.

    It's really sad honestly. I remember how elated I was the first time I was able to save up and buy a Macbook Pro in 2010. It cost me around $2000, and it STILL WORKS perfectly. 9 years of daily use, without any problems until the Mac OS itself bricked it's firewire port. (I work in audio engineering, and firewire is still kind of useful in that field) It's not powerful enough to be my work computer any more, but it's still perfectly capable of being a daily use laptop. When I decided it was time to upgrade in lat 2017, I was appalled at how just...terrible the new Macbook Pro's are. The number of issues they've had since Steve passed is just embarrassing, and how they "handle" these problems is just childish. Since I couldn't bring myself to spend money on any new mac product, I switched to PC, and I have to say I was quite surprised and pleased with the Windows 10 experience. Booting up Windows 10 for the fist time had that nice, easy "sit back and relax" feeling that I remember from the first time I booted in the Mac OS back in 2010.

    Using the MacBook's lid to open and close is general user behavior which we expect the user to do thousands of times and the keyboard is something you expect to be prone to dust and particles! Blaming the user for these problems is disgusting! I am a student who paid a hefty amount to buy a 2016 MacBook pro for designing and now with my display not working, I have to pay 45,000Rs (around 700$) to get it repaired and apple is not willing to help me with this issue. This is extremely disgusting, and we would like a replacement program for this!

  • @Ricky.Peters
    @Ricky.Peters 5 років тому +3

    It's a US$6 cable that they fixed to the display so....it will cost US$700 to repair/replace. As result of this design oversight - 1) Flex cable that's too short, 2) wrapped to close to the board, 3) fixed to the display - it has become too big of an issue for them to own up to. I'm sure if it was the $6 repair, we'd all have no problem having them repaired. Instead, I am carrying an external display around.

    I've been using macbook since 2007, mainly because of Mac OS and the design, currently still using MBP 2012 non retina that serves me well but still showing up its age (one of the memory slot stopped working but the machine can still be used even though it's slower). Their product used to last around 5 years, but lately I just found out about their questionable business practise and it seems like it just gets worse. They get really greedy, for something that's labelled a 'PRO' device, removing ports clearly won't accommodate the professionals needs. If I'm paying 2000 bucks for a pro device I expect it to work nicely out of the box, but no, I have to spend more money and buy the dongles. 2) The repairability gets WORSE. They soldered everything up, when big issue like this shows up they refuse to acknowledge it. Honestly back then I knew that I was paying premium but I can say that it delivered. Now I won't say the same
    tldr, me a 10 years+ macbook user won't be using Apple product anymore in the future. Switching to windows and android after my 2012 MBP and iPhone 6 completely died.

    Has anybody had the repair for their 2016 15 inch MBP with touchbar repaired with reduced/covered cost? Apple quoted me 900$ the other day which is crazy to me because 13 inch models can be repaired for free but those who spent more on the 15 inch dont?

      Were you ever able to work something out with apple to get yours repaired? The display on my 3 yr old 15” MacBook Pro completely failed the other day because of this poor design and apple refuses to do anything to help with the cost of repair (which was quoted to be over $700).

    • @iluvblackeyedpeas7
      @iluvblackeyedpeas7 2 роки тому

      @@kayleeschmidt7767 I believe there is currently an ongoing class action lawsuit and according to Apple I can continue to wait or receive a refund if they lose the case. I think it also depends on the Genius Bar technician you get paired with. Unfortunately I am just using a Lenovo for now but I’m hoping to get the MBP fixed under Apple cost soon. I will keep you updated!

I think its super bad style, since the 2017 has exactly the same screen/display that the 2016 which is covered has. Apple needs to own up!

    Apple become somewhat ignorance company lately. A laptop this expensive should never have this quality issue problem. Can’t believe Apple didn’t fix this problem with some massive discount/free. It is their fault by design. And the cable damaged even under normal usage. Such a shame for a company that takes big pride with quality and such.

    That's why I bought a refurbished (new battery + display) 2015 MBP with
    dPGU. In December 2019! Because it is the last reliable PRO macbook.
    Everything since 2016 is just trash. Faulty keyboard, faulty flex cable,
    poor battery Whr, poor I/O selection, no Magsafe, no SD-port, speaker
    problems, T2 problems... just pathetic. Majority of reviews and users
    agree. Only the new 16" seems okay again.

      Max Daniel Nidd which model you’re having? I read the article about this issue about a month ago, thinking that it probably won’t happen to mine. Unfortunately it just randomly happened last week. 2016 13” touchbar model.

    • @maximiliandanielnidd9177

      Calvin Lim The 2017 13” MacBook Pro. The cable is costing me about £40 however they’re adding labour costs of about £60/£70 on top. I was surprised to find that they would replace just the cable, however that said that they could do it given the circumstances. Not sure whether it is a company wide service or not. I am only having to pay for this as Consumer Laws don’t apply to me as I bought the divide through Apple for Business website. The chances are consumer laws may apply to you and you won’t have to pay.
