Guys it's possible. Just had a sub-30 minute phone call with apple, and they are fixing my 2017 15" flexgate/dustgate (both issues, I was going to fix it myself) macbook for free! I believe I hold the speedrun world record for this (26:49).
Instructions: politely let them know that you know this is flexgate/dustgate and that it is a known design flaw. They might say that only applies to 13" models (my rep "misread" this and told me they will do the repair, and then "realized his mistake" after he had already accepted the repair). If that's the case, keep trying and asking for a new agent until you find a manager sympathetic to your problem. I think I got lucky and this isn't the first time he had "accidentally misread" the 13 as a 15. They know it's bad and they know you will keep escalating, so I think they are just letting it happen to stop wasting employee time at this point. Maybe they are working from home and don't have other staff constantly listening in, maybe they have a bunch of screens left in stock. I also think you have better chances calling after hours so that your call isn't routed to a busy call center in the middle of the day.

I had this issue too. I called and called Apple and bothered them. Many told me the cost of about $900 to replace display. I said you guys caused this isse. I, the customer, did not. Thousands of people have this issue. Just check the apple discussion boards. I hung up on maybe 3 agents until I got this very caring senior agent who said she will take ownership of the issue and she will get back to me.
Few days later got this email from her:
    "
    Hi Folarin,
I received approval for the exception to have the back light replace at no cost to you.
Will you like to do a mail in are bring it back into the store for repair ?

Hey guys, unfortunately as of 2021, apple refuses to operate on “Classic MacBooks” even though mine was the exact model they cited for the free recall. I escalated all the way and they said they don’t have the parts anymore. Really devastating, especially as a student who kinda uses their computer every day. I guess I need to start saving for a new one.
Thank you so much for being honest and transparent, something not even apple does anymore.

When people are surprised it costs more than $45 to do this because it's _"just a cable"_ you have no idea how much I want to jump over the front desk and tackle them to the ground, and grind them up until they are nothing but little pieces of jumper cable to be used in another flexgate repair. but then they wouldn't be customers.
_"just the cable"_ is the repair shop version of _"just the tip."_ i swear to god.

Such ש valuable info! On my A1707 the screen has got tiny horizontal lines from top to bottom. At first it used to only happen when fully opening the lid, but now no matter what the lid position is, the line are always there. Is this also a result of a broken backlight cable, or the other, center image cable? if it's the image cable, can the cable be just replaced? or could you used the same method to "extend" the image cable? as Paul said it's long enough.. thanks so much

Finally a fix for the FlexGate. My 15in 2017 MacBook Pro had an issue with the FaceTime camera not working. Although I had someone from apple support(chat) acknowledge that it’s a “fairly common issue” and the fix was a screen replacement, my device wasn’t covered since it was a 15in model. And I’d have to pay for the repair.
Going back and forth with apple support, on phone was futile. They didn’t budge. I ended up using the laptop as is without the camera.

Now that I know they've covered it in the past, I'm gonna call back (with a guy on my side to do some of the talking, because sexism is alive and well in customer support) and keep at it until they cover the repair. The fact that they haven't stated a reason why only some models are covered, even if the reason is complete bs, means that they really have no leg to stand on. Good job, might i suggest that you strip the screens cable prior to cutting the end off, that way you can use tape to picture frame the section you wish to strip but more importantly hold the delicate end down a lot more securely, the moment it folded looked like a butt clench moment :)

Hey Louis, wondering if you have any insight into what our options are when Apple's repair, for free through an extended warranty for a specific issue, fails again. I have a 2015 MBP that had the swelling battery issue that was replaced for free last November and it's starting to swell again. My initial call stated that it would not be covered. Wondering if trying to get it escalated would help or if their blanket policy is simply "we only repair it for free once even if we are using the same exact/refurbished component that we know will fail after some time."

They use new batteries, not refurbished, but call them and ask

@Paul S How long have you owned your Wowstick? I bought my Wowstick kit about a year ago and the tiny cylindrical lithium battery died in it. Since the Wowstick is press-fit and glued together, I had to basically "can opener" the back end of the driver, where the the USB port is located, dig out the dead cell and now I have "Mehstick". I call it that because it's now basically hardwired to a benchtop PSU in order for me to use it 😞

If you have the 1F they are really easy to open with no destruction. We have 4 in the shop, we have had 3 go bad so far and had to get new ones. What we had go bad were the drive gears. Same failure in all of them, same bearing on the same gear. I'm planning on making a video on my own channel of taking it apart and seeing if I can fix it.

    @bizzehdee 2 роки тому

When the camera is zoomed in like this, you could do with some sort of scale on the screen to give even more of an idea of how small/large each of these components or traces really are, to show just how difficult this repair is and how stilled the technicians are.

I tried this fix just now after seeing the symptoms match.
Not sure from which macbook the donor cable came but the lines match perfectly.
Now there's no backlight _and_ no image.
Could it be that the connector on my donor flexcable has a different pinout?

My macbook is 2017 and I had the flex gate issue about 6 months ago. I went straight to Apple Store here in Dubai and my laptop was accepted and repaired under the flex gate program, no questions asked, no push back at all. I was afraid that they were going to push back because I didn't have the 2016.

Not sure if this question is still relevant but yes when you unplug the screen cable you will also loose keyboard backlight power. Only way around it is logging in on the extended display and then duplicating in settings

The main reason i do not perform such repairs is that camera cable will fail next. After camera fails, pinkbars flexgate comes and it does not really matter if backlight is working or not.
